Our county is steeped in historical traditions associated with the Georgia marble industry. Known as the Marble Capital, Pickens County is strategically located atop a sea of the sought-after stone where the natural beauty of the Southern Appalachian foothills envelopes you at every turn. Here you will find charming places to shop, dine, and relax surrounded by an awe-inspiring backdrop of “them thar hills.” We boast about our numerous championship golf courses, equestrian venues, and artisan festivals that will nurture your innermost passions. Whatever your interests, Pickens County is right for you.

This guide offers you but a glimpse into the many ways you can immerse yourself in all things Pickens County. We welcome you and we look forward to having you visit, move here, and start your newest business here. We’ve been waiting for you!

Sincerely,

Nestled in the foothills, Pickens County was founded on the value of its natural resources and natural beauty. Today Pickens County’s residents and visitors enjoy mountain living with small-town charm beyond the urban sprawl of Atlanta, less than an hour away.

rich in natural resources, Pickens County’s soil, elevation, and climate make it an ideal region for growing grapevines, making it home to several award-winning vineyards and wineries. The area is also an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise with trails for hiking and biking surrounded by natural beauty. Pickens County is not only the gateway to the North Georgia mountains, but also the gateway to community and hospitality.

JASPER

Marble, Mountains, and Vineyards

From its historic downtown to its worldrenowned marble quarry, Jasper embodies both of its nicknames: The First Mountain City and the Marble Capital of Georgia. Especially unique is its pink Etowah marble used in the construction of the Tate House—

an architectural landmark surrounded by gardens and centuries-old oaks.

As the county seat, Jasper is a thriving community and home to restaurants, retail shops, vineyards, golf courses, and the Pickens County Airport.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy the friendly small-town atmosphere and opportunities for activities and relaxation. Explore the area’s Cherokee heritage, savor the nectar of the vines at nearby wineries, or golf the pristine courses of Arrowhead, Big Canoe, and Bent Tree. Dine in local restaurants and visit craft breweries, tasting rooms, and a distillery that call Jasper home.

and the Georgia Northeastern Railroad running through its historic downtown. Undivided though are Nelson’s residents who come together to preserve its rich history and reputation as Georgia’s First Marble City.

Nelson derives its name from landowner, farmer, and rifle maker John Nelson, one of its earliest settlers. The city’s heritage includes many Italian and Scottish immigrants who contributed their skilled craftsmanship to the early years of the marble industry. Marble mined by Nelson’s gifted stonecutters was used to construct numerous buildings including the New York Stock Exchange, New York’s Swan Building, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the iconic Lincoln Memorial. With year-round exhibits highlighting the history of marble mining and examples of fine Georgia marble, Nelson’s Marble Museum connects the past with the present in this small town of less than 1,500 residents.

TALKING ROCK

Small-Town Charm, Rich History

Talking Rock, the third smallest town in Georgia, was established in 1883 as a stop on the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad. Today’s residents take pride in its smalltown charm and quiet way of life.

Nestled between Ellijay and Jasper, Talking Rock’s history is rich with stories of the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, the Great Depression, and the days when the railroad and train were the lifeline of the town. Notable historic sites include the Talking Rock Schoolhouse Teaching Museum dating back to 1877 and Talking Rock Brewery, established inside a restored 1923 train car and one of only two breweries in the United States to be based inside a rail-car.

Talking Rock’s usually quiet downtown springs to life the third full weekend of October for the Heritage Days Festival, a two-day festival with arts, crafts, antiques, food, and more. This celebration

is an annual highlight for residents of Talking Rock.

Visitors to Talking Rock are encouraged to explore its unique shops, stroll along the creek in beautiful Talking Rock Park, sample locally-made craft brews, and experience the calming pace of smalltown life.

TATE

Marble Makes History, Buildings

Home to the Tate Historic District and the Georgia Marble Company, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, unincorporated Tate is steeped in history and natural resources. Tate was first named Marble Works before being renamed Harnageville in homage to Ambrose Harnage whose home was the site of county court meetings under the authorization of the Georgia General Assembly.

In 1880 the town became Tate in honor of Pickens County State Senator Samuel Tate,

grandfather of marble industrialist Colonel Samuel Tate whose lavish estate built between 1923 and 1928 is still a celebrated landmark. The neoclassical style mansion, sometimes called the Pink Palace, is now a premiere wedding venue named one of the top must-see places in Georgia and one of Georgia’s Most Gorgeous Wedding Venues.

Georgia’s Etowah, Pearl Grey, Solar Grey, and White Cherokee marbles are still mined at the site of the original Georgia Marble Company by Polycor, the world’s leading natural stone quarrier.

MARBLE HILL

Quarry Life

Located at the northeastern end of the marble quarry area amid several mountains at the head of Long Swamp Valley is Marble Hill, an unincorporated town named for the nearby marble quarry. The U.S. Postal Service established a post office here in 1889.

The first Catholic church of Pickens County was established in Marble Hill between 1895 and 1897 but fell into disrepair. While no evidence of the church remains, Marble Hill is recognized by the Archdiocese of Atlanta as the site of Pickens County’s first Catholic church.

Today Marble Hill is a sought-after location for leaders in manufacturing, including Imerys, a world leader in mineralbased industrial specialties, and J. M. Huber Engineered Materials, specializing in chemical manufacturing. Marble Hill is also home to locally-owned businesses who welcome visitors to stop in on their way to nearby destinations like Amicalola Falls, Gibbs Gardens, and the Historic Tate House.

BENT TREE COMMUNITY

Outdoor Beauty and Cozy Indoor Amenities

For nearly fifty years, Lake Tamarack and its surrounding lush mountain landscapes have been home to Bent Tree, a vibrant 3,500-acre gated community offering unparalleled scenery and luxurious amenities.

Residents can explore the great outdoors with access to scenic Lake Tamarack and nearby Pendley Creek for fishing and boating as well as four maintained trails for hiking ranging from easy to strenuous. Bent Tree Golf Course beckons golfers to play one of the most alluring and challenging courses in North Georgia before relaxing at The Tavern at the 19th Hole— a pub-style restaurant with a bar, dining area, cozy fireplace, and inviting veranda. Additional activities for residents include tennis, swimming, pickleball, horseback riding, yoga, and more.

At the heart of Bent Tree is Club Tamarack, a hub for community events featuring a dining room, recreation room, and fireside lounge. Residents also gather at the Cottage, a pleasant library and meeting space, and enjoy time with their canine companions at the dog park.

To discover Bent Tree is to discover North Georgia’s best kept secret.

BIG CANOE COMMUNITY

Part-time or Full-time Residents Have Year-Round Fun

Whether you’re seeking a secluded mountain retreat or active community living, Big Canoe offers eight thousand acres of land in the North Georgia foothills to call home. Big Canoe encompasses over twenty miles of hiking trails, three lakes, three waterfalls, three golf courses, and acres upon acres of natural beauty. Once home to Native Americans who referred to the space as “The Enchanted Land,” Big Canoe seeks to preserve the enchantment with nearly one-third of the total property having been set aside as wildlife preserves and parks.

Residents of Big Canoe enjoy Canoe Life with resort-style amenities, active social clubs, and a welcoming community. The family-friendly environment offers activities for little ones as well, including ample space for youth tennis and golf lessons, clinics, and summer camps. Families gather for annual events including Easter egg hunts, Fourth of July fireworks, and Trunk or Treat events for Halloween.

Within its gates, Big Canoe residents can find upscale dining with a view of Lake Sconti at Mountains Grill in the Clubhouse, casual dining at Black Bear Pub and Sunset Veranda, and convenient quick bites at Duffer’s by the golf course. The surrounding communities of Jasper and Marble Hill also offer a variety of both locally-owned and chain restaurants to satisfy any craving.

Though just an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta, Big Canoe feels worlds away as you breathe in the mountain air and immerse yourself in the warm community atmosphere.

Lake Tamarack, inside the Bent Tree community, offers residents endless hours of recreation.

People leaving their full-time careers aren’t just retiring, they are transitioning—moving from a time in their lives focused on others and building security to a new chapter more focused on satisfying their souls than their bank accounts.

This can be a wonderful season of life for people who no longer have to work full-time. Free to pursue new passions, enjoy friendships, do things they have always wanted to, and work on their own schedule, many are finding this time of their lives to be the most personally fulfilling.

The community you choose to live in will affect every aspect of your life as you age and establish a lifestyle beyond your career. It’s an opportunity for something simpler and something that fits the person you are becoming.

There are so many things to consider and questions to ask when deciding to relocate. Picturesque Pickens County, a stone’s throw from the heart of Atlanta, is the answer for more and more people moving into a new stage of life and just might be the perfect setting for your next chapter. As the gateway to the gorgeous rolling north Georgia mountains, the secret is getting out about this hidden treasure and all it has to offer.

Highlights of Pickens County include its natural beauty and temperate climate. Even during July, the warmest month, Pickens County is still one of the coolest places in Georgia thanks in part to its elevation, approximately 1,408 feet above sea level. The annual BestPlaces Comfort Index rating for Pickens County is 7.6 out of 10, making it one of the most comfortable climates in Georgia. With an average snowfall of two inches per year, you might even start dreaming of a white Christmas.

Looking for new friends in the same stage of life? Pickens County has a population of 34,024—much less densely populated than surrounding counties—and more than 22 percent of the county is over age sixty-five. A large senior population has led to a boom of social groups and activities geared towards a maturing generation interested in keeping physically and mentally fit.

Concerned about giving up world-class healthcare in Atlanta for the opportunity to live away from the traffic and high costs? Those in their forties, fifties, and beyond understand that a lot of maintenance is necessary for staying healthy. The senior

population of Pickens County has prompted a proliferation of primary care physicians and specialists as well as the establishment of Piedmont Mountainside, a fifty-two-bed hospital located in Pickens County consistently ranked among the top five Atlanta hospitals for patient experience.

While housing costs have risen considerably all over Georgia, affordable housing remains a major draw to Pickens County. For many embracing a new post-work lifestyle, downsizing to a manageable-sized home with less maintenance is a priority. But with sky-high building costs, downsizing has often meant taking on a larger mortgage—a move which any financial advisor would strongly discourage. In Pickens County the value of owner-occupied housing units is less than $200,000 and the median gross rent is $874 monthly. options to choose from, offering everything from independent living to comprehensive nursing care. Many of the facilities are new and offer state-of-the-art modern accommodations with a small-town feel. Some communities feature tranquil country settings with acres of land complete with horses and animals roaming about.

Other housing options are just minutes from downtown Jasper’s charming restaurants, shops, and fun activities, including workshops in gardening, quilting, photography, ceramics, and even the culinary arts. The emergence of trendy wineries such as Fainting Goat Vineyards, Canoe Vineyard and Winery, and Sharp Mountain Vineyards speaks to the new sophisticated palate for tastes and interests in the area. From quiet country living to an active downtown lifestyle, you choose your vibe.

Labor Day

weekend attracts Jeep owners and clubs from all over the country to Jasper for the annual Sheriff’s JeepFest event. This three-day family-friendly event is packed full of Jeep obstacles, trails, and mud plus live music, food vendors, and more. JeepFest 2021 saw over 2,000 registered Jeeps participating in the event with an estimated 20,000 spectators cheering on the action. Speaking of action, there’s plenty to be found as Jeep drivers navigate

obstacle courses, maneuver rugged forest trails, and engage in exhilarating challenges with special access to venues and trails that are typically closed to public wheeling and crawling. The Mud Pit Challenge dares owners to drive their Jeeps into a muddy path with water as deep as their tires while Karnage Klimb pits the Jeeps against a steep boulder-strewn hill, requiring an adventurous climb like no other.

In the wake of tornadoes that devastated the Pickens community

in 2009, Sheriff Donnie Craig recognized the need within the community and took action to create the Sheriff’s Foundation of Pickens County in order to provide children in need with housing, food, and clothing. Through this initiative, JeepFest was born and has since grown into the foundation’s largest source of funding with 100 percent of the proceeds being distributed to a variety of children’s charities throughout Pickens County. In 2021, the foundation raised over $167,000 for local children in need.

Sheriff Donnie Craig and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office launched JeepFest as an annual fundraiser to provide needy children with a place to live, clothing, supplies, healthy food, and above all else, love.

Long before Pickens County formed, it was a small portion of what people called the Land of the Cherokees. The Land of the Cherokees included all land west of the Chattahoochee River and north of Carroll County.

In1805 the federal government paid the Cherokee nation $500 when Native Americans and the federal government signed the Treaty of Tellico, which allowed the construction of an “open and free road for the use of the citizens of the United States.” The federal road followed and included a trail called the Middle Cherokee Trading path. This road connected trading posts between Augusta, Georgia and Nashville, Tennessee, and served as a direct link to the navigable Tennessee River. The road was a critical link for trade. General Andrew Jackson, “Old Hickory” himself, gets credit for building much of the road. Taverns served as rest stops along the federal road and Native Americans, white people, and interracial families staffed them.

In 1817 Georgia Presbyterians came to the area to build mission schools. In 1819

they established the Taloney Mission along Talking Rock Creek to reach Cherokee children. The Presbyterians continued to build mission schools throughout this area and the state for more than fifteen years.

In 1829 word spread that there was gold in the mountains of Georgia, including Pickens County. A year later Henry Fitzsimmons, an itinerant Scotsman, stumbled upon an outcrop of a different type of valuable natural commodity— marble. More than fifty years would pass, however, before the marble industry felt a surge of growth. Until then, gold was king.

In 1831 the Land of the Cherokees was officially named Cherokee County by the Georgia legislature. Although Pickens County was not yet formed from that territory, what is now Pickens County became rooted on a little more than thirty miles of that critical trade route.

Discovery of gold in the late 1820s led to speculation and demand for land in the

Cherokee nation. In 1832 Georgia instituted a land lottery in which the Cherokee lands were distributed to white men. This act led to Congress passing the Indian Removal Act, which President Jackson signed into law because he knew he could not protect the Cherokee people from expansion of the new nation of America. The removal of the Cherokee people westward later became known as the 1838 Trail of Tears. That same year, the state split Cherokee into multiple counties: Cherokee, Forsyth, Lumpkin, Union, Cobb, Gilmer, Murray, Cass (now Bartow), Floyd, and Paulding. The legislators carved out pieces of Gilmer to the north and Cherokee to the south to form Pickens County in 1853. It took about eighteen years for the dust to settle between Cherokee, Gilmer, and Pickens counties as land was peacefully transferred back and forth. The final county borders were established in 1870. Pickens County was named after Andrew Pickens, a brigadier general during the American Revolution who also served in the South Carolina legislature and Congress.

War divides people. Pickens County is no exception. Prior to the start of the American Civil War in 1861, community leaders voted against secession from the Union. Protest of Georgia’s secession was strong in the county, and citizens voluntarily guarded the U.S. flag flying over the courthouse as long as possible until a thunderstorm shredded the flag and it was lowered, causing citizens from Pickens County to become divided. Some of the men joined the Confederate army and others the Union. Brothers fought against brothers. During the war Jasper was occupied by both armies at different times, often ending in gruesome battles. As the war came to a close, Pickens County once again raised the Stars and Stripes above the courthouse where it still waves today.

The fortunes of Pickens County changed with the coming of the Marietta & Georgia Railroad in 1883. On May 1, 1884, Yankee investors formed the Georgia Marble Company. With a total of a $1.5 million investment, the Georgia Marble Company built a rail line to meet the Marietta & Georgia. The Tate estate leased much of the quarry land to other companies. Colonel Sam Tate became president and general manager of the Georgia Marble Company in 1905. From this beginning, Pickens County marble made its mark in local schools and in sixty percent of the monuments in Washington, D.C. Marble buyers the world over still favor

quarries in Pickens County for counter-tops, monuments, and other building uses.

In the early 1970s, luxury mountain community developments began emerging in Pickens County. Bent Tree and Big Canoe became places for summer homes and retreats for wealthy Atlantans. Today these areas have grown to include affordable full-time residences, multiple golf courses, and countless other amenities while preserving the natural beauty of the land.

In 1979 Georgia State Route 515 began construction and later became the lifeline of Pickens County. This major corridor was completed in 1987 and continues to serve as a direct connector to Atlanta. No longer isolated in the mountains of North Georgia, Pickens County is a pleasant, small-town community with all the conveniences of a big city just a few miles down the road.

Pickens County is a wonderful place to call home. Our heritage runs deep, and our foundation is solid. We’re well positioned to continue to thrive in both business and industry, and most of all, we are happy to be living where business meets the great outdoors.

PICKENS COUNTY

Where Business Meets the Great Outdoors

Progressive development coupled with respect for a unique history makes Pickens County an exceptional choice.

COUNTY

With a strong local government and solid infrastructure, the leaders of Pickens County ensure that the community is always moving forward and finding ways to make the area even better than it is today. Thanks to Chattahoochee Technical College and other local higher education institutions, Pickens County is fortunate to have a population of educated residents ready to join the workforce and grow local, state, and national businesses.

The Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to education reform, community advancement, and economic development, as well as providing resources and support to all community and business endeavors.

Pickens County is a significant community in Georgia. While proud of its heritage in the marble industry, the county and its surrounding region continue to make a demonstrated effort to remain progressive. That effort has resulted in strong economic growth.

Pickens County is a vital part of Georgia’s Northwest Region. This fifteen-county region is home to the state’s first inland terminal, and a powerful logistics rail gateway to and from the Port of Savannah. Operated by CSX and the Georgia Ports Authority, it serves as an economic development boon for the state and

entire southeast U.S. while removing an estimated 50,000 trucks from local highways each year.

Jasper, the county seat, is a thriving place for small businesses to grow roots and is ideal for office-based, retail, and restaurant opportunities. At its core, this community has a diverse economic foundation built on a firm base of the healthcare, education, manufacturing, retail, and tourism industries.

LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION

Since its inception, Pickens County has stood apart by the significance of its strategic location, and that importance has continued to grow. The county has an excellent transportation network that includes the availability of interstate highway, rail, and air transport. Being about forty miles from the Georgia Ports Authroity’s Appalachian Regional Port in Crandall, Georgia makes Pickens county affordable and well-positioned for success.

HIGHWAY

Interstate 575 directly connects Pickens County to Atlanta. Seven state highways, one business route, and one connector run through the county.

 RAIL

Did you realize that those who convert long-haul freight from road to rail can save up to forty percent in cost? According to the Association of American Railroads, freight railroads can move one ton of freight an average of 479 miles on a single gallon of fuel and lower greenhouse emissions by seventy-five percent.

Recognizing the need for choosing the most environmentallyfriendly mode of transportation, Pickens County is served directly by Georgia Northeast Railroad with a CSX interconnect and is forty-two miles from the Georgia Ports Authority Appalachian Regional intermodal container port. This inland port eliminates hundreds of trucking miles from the nearest ocean port.

 WATER

Three of the country’s top ten deep-water ports are within 375 miles from Jasper requiring less than one gallon of fuel per ton on the railway. All ports have CSX rail on terminal, making it seamless for access to Pickens County.

WORKFORCE EDUCATION

POPULATION

Chattahoochee Technical College’s campus in Jasper provides strong candidates in several areas, such as medical assisting, welding, automotive technology, automotive collision repair, cosmetology, business technology, and carpentry. In addition, Chattahoochee Tech has partnered with local schools in Pickens County so students can flow directly into dualenrollment classes available at Chattahoochee Tech.

MINING IN PICKENS

It’s estimated that more than three hundred responsible neighbors work in the county’s marble mines. The companies employing these hardworking people are dedicated to safety, diversity, and fairness.

Arguably, the most pristine crystalline in the world is respectfully unearthed from these lands daily. The Cherokee people first began marble work, and some of those pieces are still in existence today.

PICKENS COUNTY AIRPORT (JZP)

Pickens County Airport is undergoing $6.5 million worth of expansion and upgrade projects—some of which are complete, some underway, and some funded with plans to begin soon. Upgrades include runway crack seal and paint, new windsock, new Automated Weather Observing System, refurbished beacon, and upgraded LED runway lights. Expansion projects include newly completed T-hangars, box hangars, expanded ramp space, and a new state-of-the-art terminal building to be completed in 2023.

“You will see military and civilian aircraft of all classes, including small business jets, thanks to its 5,000-foot long, 100-foot-wide runway,” says Airport Manager Randy Thomason.

Bank presidents, real estate executives, aerial surveyors, and corporate executives use the airport. Contractors who maintain power line rights of way fly in and out of here as well.

open hangar space. “I truly believe if I had 100 hangars, I’d have them filled within three years,” Thomason said. Also, the Airport Authority is entertaining offers for land lease and private hangar space.

Flight schools at Pickens County Airport include Get Inspired Flight (GetInspiredFlight. com), and Planes World (PlanesWorld.net).

Thomason said the airport’s five-year plan for capital improvement projects includes extending the runway to 5,505 feet so jets will be able to take off with full fuel loads. He anticipates this will soon be submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation and the FAA. A longer runway would increase traffic and jet fuel sales. Self-service pumps enable the airport to stay open 24/7 for fuel sales.

The History of in Pickens County

You’ll find marble

from Pickens County in

the statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial and more than sixty percent of the monuments in Washington, D.C. Even the governor of Georgia has a piece of local marble on his desk—the nameplate.

While historians report that Native Americans used marble found in Pickens County as early as 1400, it wasn’t until the 1830s that the first marble quarries and the first marble mill opened.

In 1835 Henry Fitzsimmons, a Scottish stonemason, stumbled upon an outcrop of the world’s richest deposit of white crystalline marble. The marble deposit runs five to seven miles long, half a mile wide, and up to two thousand feet deep. Fitzsimmons found this deposit on what the Cherokee people called Long Swamp Valley.

The following year, 1836, Fitzsimmons opened the first quarry and finishing mill in Georgia—it focused on manufacturing tombstones. Over the next fifty years, more marble companies opened operations, including Tate, Adkinson & Company in 1847.

Fitzsimmons operated his quarries and mill until he was murdered on December 24, 1844, in a knife fight at a tavern. In 1845 Samuel Tate leased some land to James Gideon, James Holmes, and Gideon Roberts, all from Alabama, to open a finishing mill on Long Swamp Creek. Sumney & Hurlick reopened the Perseverance Quarry east of Jasper in 1857. The company was successful until the Civil War, when the sheriff dissolved it in 1867 to pay company debts.

In 1883, with the opening of the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad line, shipping the marble outside of the region became convenient. A year later, in May 1884, a group of Yankee investors chartered the Georgia Marble Company and capitalized it with a million dollars with an option of an additional $500,000. The company spent $800,000 on land, finishing mills, and adding branch rail lines to the Marietta & North Georgia Railroad.

In 1885 the Southern Marble Company, a Massachusetts company with quarries in Marble Hill, opened for business. In 1897 the nine-mile Amicalola Railroad was completed to Marble Hill, finishing the loop the Georgia Marble Company built.

Polycor now owns the Dimension Stone division of Georgia Marble and uses Georgia marble in new architecture as well as restorations around the country, including Louis Vuitton Fifth Avenue in New York, Washington Monument Plaza, the Rhode Island State House, and the Minnesota State Capitol, to name but a few.
