FUTURE RECREATION AREA
Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area is located two miles south of Ball Ground, GA and adjacent to the McGraw-Ford Wildlife Management Area. The property rests northwest of the confluence of Long Swamp Creek and the Etowah River. The property is accessed by GA Highway 372. The development of this project will provide for the critical protection and conservation of sensitive land that borders two bodies of water, wildlife management in the area, and outdoor recreation opportunities for Cherokee County residents and visitors. The land is rich with Native American history and culture, especially the Cherokee Nation. Specifically, it is believed that the Battle of Taliwa actually took place on this land and adjacent properties. The battle, thought to be fought in 1755, was part of a
larger campaign of the Cherokee against the Muscogee Creek people. After their victory, the Cherokee pushed the Muscogee people south from their northern Georgia homelands and began settling in the region.
In addition to its regional significance, the property has numerous naturalresource recreation opportunities including, but not limited to, canoeing/ kayaking, camping, fishing, nature/walking trail, wildlife viewing, and archery activities. As a result, preserving this outdoor recreation area that includes amenities that show its historical and cultural significance are of the utmost importance to us and our community. The anticipated time for the opening of this park project is in the first quarter of 2025.
Cherokee Recreation & Parks is a nationally accredited agency through NRPA National Recreation and Park Association. A few things that set our agency apart and to receive this national accreditation:
• Implementing a new Standard Operations Procedures Manual encompassing over 50 new or revised policies and procedures.
• Developing a Park Maintenance Manual to standardize maintenance processes and schedules across all 23 parks and facilities.
• Adopting a new strategic plan to guide program and facility development.
• Adopting a Recycle Plan to improve recycling efforts and reduce waste across all facilities
• Providing extensive staff training in critical areas such as de-escalation tactics, program development and evaluation, social media utilization, and risk reduction in programs and facilities.
Our agency successfully met 149 out of 154 standards, securing its place as one of 213 accredited agencies in the United States. This achievement demonstrates Cherokee Recreation & Parks’ ongoing commitment to excellence for their community and sets a strong foundation for its next re-accreditation in 2026.
Today’s youth sports climate overflows with programming choices, making it challenging for organizations to stand out among the crowd and difficult for parents to gauge which ones can deliver high-quality experiences for young athletes. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation recognizes those organizations that have met an equally high standard when it comes to administering youth sports programming. Earning the designation means that you have taken the steps to ensure a safe, quality playing environment for children. The Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation has been developed around the National Standards for Youth Sports to recognize and promote youth sports organizations that prioritize quality. If an organization meets the benchmark requirements of the designation, parents can be assured that specific safety and quality measures have been implemented.
We seek a future where the full power of parks and recreation is widely recognized for creating a better life for everyone by building strong, healthy, and resilient communities. We advance this vision by investing in and championing the profession as a catalyst of positive change for equity, climate readiness, and overall well-being.
Currently, 9 full-time employees at Cherokee Recreation & Parks are Certified Parks & Recreation Professionals! A Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification is the national standard for all parks and recreation professionals who want to be at the forefront of their profession. Attaining the CPRP designation shows that you have met education and experience qualifications and illustrates your commitment to the profession and your knowledge and understanding of key concepts within parks and recreation. We are proud to have so many employees who want to continue their education to make Cherokee Recreation & Parks the best we can be.

CAMPS
FOUNDATIONS
Intelligent Design is a week-long summer camp opportunity for kids to advance their computer science skills through game design and development. Participants may start the week with zero coding knowledge and by the end will have a fully designed, implemented, and published video game of their own. The instructor will walk them through good design principles, a strong development workflow, and how to make it all come to fruition by publishing the game online.
The program is broken down into three camps: Foundations, Basics of Project Programming, and Advanced Game Design and Development.
Suited for ages eight to ten, this camp focuses on teaching programming and problem-solving fundamentals using the free online resource Scratch (Scratch.mit.edu). Students will be guided through completing one game each day of camp and will be shown how to share their games on the Scratch website.
This camp goes beyond simple 1-day games and has participants ages ten to twelve developing a game that is uniquely theirs over the course of the whole week.
Students use the 8-bit fantasy console PICO-8 (Lexaloffle.com) to generate their own graphics and sound assets while also learning to write code in the popular Lua scripting language.
On the final day, students publish their games online to Lexaloffle.com where they can be played worldwide and receive genuine feedback from the PICO-8 community.
This camp allows students ages 12–14 to unlock their potential by designing and developing a game all their own. Rather than step-by-step instruction, they receive guidance through the iterative process of game development. They learn good software development practices, adding a new tool to their kit each day. It is up to them to decide how to implement them in their project.
By the end of the week, students publish their games online on the popular game website Itch.io
