received multiple prestigious awards at the 2021 Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s Annual Conference. Of the awards received, Cherokee Recreation and Parks earned the most prestigious award by being named Agency of the Year in the category for counties with populations over 150,000. Cherokee Recreation and Parks had previously earned this award in 1999 and most recently in 2003. Cherokee County Community Services Agency Director Bryan Reynolds earned the highest individual district award by being named the District 5 Distinguished Professional. Reynolds previously served as the Recreation and Parks director from 2008-2019 and was appointed as the Community Services Agency director in 2019. Other awards received include the District 5 Outstanding Program award given to the Cherokee County Aquatic Center for their Water Safety Week program held June 14-19, the District 5 Outstanding Facilities and Grounds Staff award given to Parks Manager Tony Stargel and the District 5 Al Richardson Outstanding Athletics Staff award given to Athletics Division Director Shawn Schumacher.
Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies After two years of hard work, Cherokee Recreation and Parks has achieved national accreditation through Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). This accomplishment included an eighteen-month self-assessment, submission of an official report, and successful completion of a CAPRA site visit. At a late summer 2021 CAPRA hearing, the Cherokee Recreation and Parks agency officially passed 149 out of 154 standards, becoming the eleventh accredited agency in Georgia.
As part of the CAPRA process, Cherokee Park and Recreation approved and instituted
• A Standard Operations Procedures Manual covering more than fifty new or amended policies and procedures; • A Park Maintenance Manual that guides maintenance processes and schedules in all twenty-three parks and facilities; • Adopted a strategic plan to guide program and facility development for the next five years; and • Trained staff in such areas as de-escalation tactics, developing and evaluating programs, using social media, and reducing risk in agency programs and facilities.
Today’s youth sports climate overflows with programming choices. Parents have a multitude of sport programs to choose from when searching for the best fit for their child. Cherokee Recreation and Parks announce their acceptance of the Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider designation. This prestigious designation is bestowed after meeting rigorous benchmarks including the highest standards of written policies and procedures, volunteer screening, coach training, parent education, and accountability.
Certified Parks & Recreation Professionals Currently, ten full-time employees at Cherokee Recreation and Parks are Certified Parks and Recreation Professionals (CPRP). A CPRP certification is the national benchmark for all parks and recreation professionals who want to be at the forefront of their profession.

Little Starz Soccer – Thumpers
This popular parent/tot class is where imagination and soccer play collide! Our goal is to continue to build core movements such as balance, coordination, hopping, jumping, and running. While parent involvement is part of this program, the class helps bridge the gap between parallel play and sharing. This period in a child’s development is extremely important and engaging the body and mind with physical activity has been proved to aid in accomplishing growth milestones. Every participant will get a medal and their own soccer ball.
Buckle up for this exciting class! While movement education is a priority, we are now incorporating learned soccer skills into the sided activities. Imagination is still a focus. We will look at creative story lines and adventures to keep them moving. This is the age where players will be introduced to scrimmages/games. Every participant will get a medal and their own soccer ball.
