Dr. Allen is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He is a board-certified Radiation Oncologist and completed his residency at the top ranked cancer center in the country, MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is experienced in the latest radiation treatment modalities.

Dr. Strickland completed her internship and residency at St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital and St. John Oakland Hospital in Michigan. She brings her specialized Breast fellowship training in the treatment of malignant and benign diseases of the breast to our area.

Dr. Matthews completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Utah and a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery. He continues to support the community as a volunteer firefighter. Dr. Matthews sees patients in both our Redding and Chico locations.

Dr. Lomas completed his residency training in Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has coauthored journal articles and abstracts, and has presented his research. He has served in the US Army and has multiple combat deployments with Special Operations Forces.

Passionate painter As a child, I’ve always been drawn to art. My mom put me in painting classes when I was 10 in my hometown of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and I fell in love! I tried other paths, even attending Law School, but nothing felt “right.” After moving to Redding, I enrolled at Shasta College and started taking art classes again. My time in those classes reaffirmed that painting is my passion. I am so thankful to Susan Schimke, John Harper, and Andrew Patterson for being the best teachers I could have asked for. I eventually moved to Southern California, where I filmed a short documentary about my art, and had my first gallery show in Downtown LA. Since then, I’ve had solo and group shows in New York, Boston, East Hampton, San Francisco, Sun Valley, and Miami, and internationally in Germany, Shanghai, Naples, Milan, Mexico City, Barcelona, and Geneva. I’ve also done brand partnerships with several companies, the most recent being with Porsche for their 75th anniversary! My advice for anyone considering Shasta College is to take advantage of the caliber of education you’re getting and not underestimate it. To the art students, spend as much time at the college as you can and ask as many questions as possible. Make a lot of art and ask for peer and teacher feedback. Keep going even when it’s hard, and keep working until you find your voice. Practice is everything!

A BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE The Sundial Bridge located in the heart of Redding opened to the public on July 4, 2004. World renowned Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava designed the bridge, which was his first stand-alone bridge in the United States. The McConnell Foundation funded most of the effort and then gifted the bridge to the city of Redding. An estimated 500,000 people cross the Sundial Bridge annually, which traverses the Sacramento River and links the north and south campuses of Turtle Bay Exploration Park to the Sacramento River Trail. The Foundation looks forward to a community celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Sundial Bridge in July.

Viktor describes his life experience in Nazi death camps and states, “You cannot control what happens to you in life, but you can always control what you will feel and do about what happens to you.” He suggests “that the primary human drive is not pleasure but the pursuit of what we find meaningful.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE GENRE? Currently, I have been enjoying WW2 movies and documentaries. “Band of Brothers” is one of my favorites. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN THE NORTH STATE? Setting S H A S TA V I E W L O D G E I N M CC LO U D A FAIRYTALE MOUNTAIN wedding requires the perfect blend of seclusion, serenity and scenery, and the newly renovated Shasta View Lodge in McCloud offers all of it in spades. “The biggest thing is when people step in the backyard and see that view of Mount Shasta, they're like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is incredible.’ Even though they've seen the pictures, the experience of seeing it in person is something else. Their heart starts beating and they’re just captivated by the mountain. They tell us they can really envision their loved ones and family having this experience with them,” explains April LaFrance, who co-owns the lodge with business partner Christian Taylor. “Amongst our team, we really think of it as the most important moment of your life at the base of the most stunning mountain in California.” According to Taylor, the Lodge’s location – a mere 15 minutes off Interstate 5 – offers convenience. “A lot of people are traveling from out of town, so being close to I-5 is important.” But as a wedding destination, the lodge also offers the ultimate sense of privacy. On site are nine cabins that can sleep anywhere from 2-12 people, as well as indoor and outdoor gathering spaces that can accommodate as many as 150 people. 4 continued on page 24

MCCLOUD IS UNIQUE AND COOL. AND, HONESTLY IT HAS THE BEST VIEWS OF MOUNT SHASTA, MORE THAN ANY OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. MCCLOUD FALLS IS AN AMAZING SET OF WATERFALLS JUST A FEW MILES FROM THE LODGE. THE MCCLOUD RESERVOIR IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS IN THE WHOLE AREA.

“Oftentimes a bride and groom will tell us they've been looking at potential venues where they can only do the ceremony or maybe a reception. What we offer is everything inclusive. Not only do you get to have your ceremony and reception on the property, you can also get in the night before and have your rehearsal dinner in our hall. Your family, friends and bridal parties can stay on the property. You have your big day and then everybody stays the night. And then, the next morning, you can do a sendoff breakfast, which has become another popular tradition,” explains Taylor. LaFrance calls the Lodge’s newly renovated interior spaces “warm” and “inviting,” while Taylor describes the meticulous attention to detail. “When people go to the Mount Shasta area, they want to stay in a wood cabin, but they also want their amenities. We really try to blend local materials like reclaimed wood floors and tongue-andgroove cedar plank ceilings with modern comforts, brandnew comfortable bed pillows, towels, linen, high-end soaps, etc. just to give that feel of being pampered.” Taylor and LaFrance also note the outdoor appeal of McCloud and its surrounding area. “McCloud is unique and cool. And, honestly it has the best views of Mount Shasta, more than any other side of the mountain. McCloud Falls is an amazing set of waterfalls just a few miles from the lodge. The McCloud Reservoir is one of the best-kept secrets in the whole area. And of course, there’s the Mount Shasta Ski Park right down the road from us,” notes Taylor. As a vacation destination, the region currently offers better affordability than other mountain destinations like Tahoe or Yosemite. “We're getting several guests from the Bay Area who are saying, ‘Hey, I don't want to pay $20,000 for a wedding venue when I can rent this equally beautiful place for less and have a place to stay at the same time.” For the especially budget-minded, Taylor also suggests booking outside the May-through-October season and taking advantage of off-season discounts. EASY EVENTS WITH J A K E A N D J E N N F O N TA N A THE LOVE STORY between Jake and Jennifer Fontana started back in 2011 at the Red Lion in Redding. Jenn was working for United Way of Northern California and helped plan a “Celebrity Waiter Night” fundraiser in which local personalities served the guests. Jenn hadn’t met any of the local celebrities before the event, but that day, she introduced herself to each one. That’s when she met Power 94.7 DJ Jake Easy. “I’ll never forget that moment. I knew there was something between us by the way he shook my hand and the way he said my name,” Jenn recalls. However, she was in a relationship at the time, so nothing more came of the interaction. Fast forward to four months later when Jenn became single and ran into Jake at a bar where he emceed. She was with someone else at the time, but that initial spark between Jake and Jennifer was still there. “I ran into her at Johnny’s with a date and I recognized her immediately. I wanted to get to know her more, knowing she was single. That’s when I really fell in love,” Jake says. “He offered to buy us a drink and in a short amount of time he stole me from my date. It didn’t take long for him to steal my heart after that,” Jennifer recalls. Jake and Jenn got married in Cancun in June 2014, and soon after that the newlyweds’ love blossomed into a business. After they came back home to Redding, a friend asked if they would consider DJing their wedding. Their mutual friend DJ Jose Ochoa was supposed to work the event, but the popular fellow Power 94.7 DJ had suddenly passed away and the engaged couple didn’t know what to do. Jenn had experience and education in this space. She graduated with a degree in social work from Chico State University and began working with nonprofits in Redding, which is how she got the Red Lion “Celebrity Waiter Night” gig. Jenn soon realized that she had a passion for planning, coordinating, decorating, DJing, hosting, and even doing floral arrangements for events.

Soon after Jake and Jennifer got married and fell into the DJ gig at that couple’s wedding, Easy Events was born. Now, 10 years later, Easy Events has worked close to 150 events, helping other couples have their perfect day. Jenn explains that she’s always putting the couple front and center of every decision, always considering what will make it easiest for them and what they will enjoy. When working with a couple, the Easy Events owners give them a list of 250 questions and have a meeting that can last two or three hours. “Couples are like, ‘Aw, we feel so much better’ walking out of the meeting with a detailed timeline and everything discussed ahead of time,” Jenn says. “Our number one goal is to not ask them one question on their wedding day.” “Jenn’s really good at the meetings, dialing down to make sure everyone knows their job,” Jake says. When asked about the most requested songs or genre of music, the Easy Events duo say it’s all over the place. “That’s where Jake is so amazing and what Easy Events is built off of. Jake is able to see a crowd and play to it. There are older people there and younger people and not everyone likes the same thing, but he can get everybody dancing,” Jenn says. Throughout their 10 years of working together, Jenn and Jake have also learned some things from other couples. “On such a big day you realize what’s important to the individual or the couple,” Jake says. “Sometimes it’s the vows, partying before the ceremony or even the desserts,” he adds. They both laugh, sharing a story about how a couple tolerated some wedding crashers on their big day, until they started eating the fancy desserts. That’s when the bride had Jenn kick them out. “We really center the day on the couple. We want to give them whatever they want. We encourage couples to not pay attention to what anyone else is doing, just imagine their perfect day and we’ll work out how to make it happen,” Jenn says. “We built this business on word of mouth. But when you turn 50, you realize that two-thirds of your life is behind you, and you only have so much time ahead of you. So, the question becomes, what do you want to do with what’s left? For me, I decided that ‘I can’t do that’ was no longer a part of my vocabulary, and I could do anything I wanted to. I had always wanted to be an esthetician. So, I decided to go back to school, which terrified me, but God just opened the way for everything to fall in place.” After graduation, Weston went to work for Sacred Mountain Spa in Mount Shasta. A year later, another life-changing opportunity presented itself. “I was there for a year when the owner came up and asked me if I wanted to buy the spa. She was ready to step away and having watched me, she felt that I would give it the same love she had. At the time, one of my clients asked me where I was going to get the down payment and I told her I honestly didn’t know. Then, when we got done with that session, she said, ‘I want to be that person’ and she wrote me a check for the down payment that day. March 1st will be 10 years that I've owned the spa, and I’m still get giddy I get to do this.” From an outsider’s perspective, Weston’s positivity is both contagious and confounding, especially given the personal adversity she’s faced during that same decade. “I got certified in oncology esthetics because I had lost a lot of people close to me to cancer, my mother included. And when people are in treatment, there are certain ingredients that you don't want to use on the skin. There are certain ways of doing massage for people who have lost their lymph nodes. Sometimes you must prop people up because they can get nauseated. I wanted to help and love on people and make them feel better going through treatments.” 4 continued on page 50

Then, Weston got her own cancer diagnosis. “Until I got cancer, I didn't really understand all that you feel and everything else that goes along with that. But I feel like it was also a gift because now I can really help people who have it.” Not only is Weston a cancer survivor, she’s survived two major wildfires. Her house in Weed was directly in the path of the Boles Fire in 2014 and then again in the path of the Mill Fire in 2022. “Both times I was home, it was my day off, so I’m very thankful I was able to get my animals and get out. During the first fire, I had 15 minutes, and I had a friend who saw the fire coming, and so she and her son stopped by my house and helped me throw things in the car. I was able to grab all my photo albums, my antique pictures of my mom, all that stuff. But this last time I only had just enough time to grab my dog and my cat. And when I left, my heart was sad. I had to leave behind all my mom's diaries that she kept every day from 1949 to a week before she passed.” Miraculously, Weston’s home wasn’t destroyed in either instance, even though most of her neighborhood was devastated. “The first fire was hard coming back from because it looked like a war zone. I was out of my house for seven weeks. The second fire was only five days, but driving in was still traumatic. Your heart just breaks for people. And this last one, lives were lost. People lost their animals. I just prayed for everybody that I could, that they were doing okay or finding strength.” But confronting those life and death moments has only reinforced Weston’s original personal commitment to let fear go. “Going through things, like with my cancer or the fires, I feel that our day is in the Big Book when it's going to happen. If it's my day, it's my day and I will be OK, so, I can't live in fear of that.” All of these ups and downs in her life have also magnified for Weston what is truly dear in life. “After something like that you realize what's important and what's not. I mean, I love all my things. I love my house. I've worked hard to have my own place. But I also realized it's just stuff. I can’t take it with me. WHEN FALL RIVER Brewing relocated from its cramped Intermountain facility to an expansive warehouse on Eastside Road in Redding, its owners had no idea it was the start of a social sensation. While the move in 2017 allowed the craft brewer to ramp up production, it also paved the way for an on-site tasting room that has become an extremely popular gathering spot. As gleaming stainless steel fermenting tanks stand guard, the warehouse now routinely hosts line-dancing classes, trivia nights, bingo games, live music and other events. “It certainly makes us proud of the community that surrounds us,” says Amanda Hutchings, Fall River’s vice-president and co-owner with her husband, John. “It’s sort of a destination place now. What we love about it is that it’s a community gathering space. We’ve got families in here; kids can play at the arcade. It’s kind of a one-stop spot for everybody.” Hutchings says she’s gratified when the warehouse-turned-pub becomes a spot for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and other big milestones. With its relaxed vibe – well-behaved dogs

and outside food are welcome and cornhole games are a regular feature – the brewery has proven to be a comfortable place for friends to gather to enjoy a beer and chat. In the competitive craft brewing industry, Fall River has become the little engine that could as it methodically develops innovative styles of ales, stouts, lagers and hard seltzers while gradually expanding distribution west to the coast, north to the Oregon border and south to Monterey and Stockton. “We’re still pretty regionally focused compared to other craft brewers. The other, bigger ones are seeing a decrease in their sales while ours has seen a small but incremental growth in sales. We’re trying to stay regionally focused,” Hutchings says. To put the brewery’s production into context, Hutchings says Fall River sent 4 million pints of beer out the doors in 2023. Not bad for a business that started in the Hutchings’s garage in 2011. The industry has taken notice, too. At the super-competitive California State Fair Commercial Craft Brew Competition, Fall River has twice won gold medals for its Pittville Porter and a gold for Single Track Obsession, a beer brewed in collaboration with the Redding Trail Alliance. Its Kilty Pleasure Scottish Ale picked up a bronze at the 2023 Best of Craft Beer Awards and its Sherbet Drip Sour won a gold at the 2022 Great American Beer Festival. Fall River’s flagship, Hexagenia IPA (named after Fall River’s prodigious mayfly hatch), was voted one of the top 100 IPAs in America. Asked what the secret to Fall River’s success has been, Hutchings did not hesitate: “We hired a great staff. Our production team, we have people with great experience working at great breweries. On the flip side, we have people with no experience who are hard workers and get the job done. For the tasting room folks, whenever we onboard someone, we tell them working at the tasting room is like inviting someone into our own living room. Year of the Dragon

ON FEBRUARY 4, an event the likes of which hasn’t been seen since 1908 is returning to Red Bluff in honor of Lunar New Year. As the calendar turns to the Year of the Dragon, performers from San Francisco’s Leung’s White Crane Dragon and Lion Dance Association will present a dragon dance in the historic Chinatown Alley. “The year of the dragon is considered the luckiest year of the Chinese zodiac,” says Jessica Chew of the Helen and Joe Chew Foundation, which, along with the descendants of Wong Foey, another Chinese Gold Rush family, is sponsoring the day’s activities. “Most people in the Asian community are familiar with Chinese lions. This will be the first time many see a dragon.” The celebration is the culmination of a year of events highlighting Red Bluff ’s Chinese history and the five pioneering families that developed Chinatown Alley at Hickory and Rio Streets, including the Chews, Lims, Chans, Foeys and Chins. While the town no longer has an active Chinatown, it still has a deep history as the last steamboat stop on the Sacramento River, where Chinese families immigrated and immersed in the community. The descendants of these families are helping the community understand the rich history and are debunking some false narratives. Two of the biggest false narratives are that there are Chinese tunnels in Red Bluff and that Chinatown was burned down. Of the first: there were never tunnels. Of the second, which is connected to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, Chinatown was not burned down and Chinese people were never formally expelled from Red Bluff, as they were in Redding in 1886. In fact, among the many documents Jessica Chew has accumulated from her family history is a petition supporting the immigration of her great grandfather, Joe You Chew, with more than 20 signatures from everyone from the mayor to the postmaster. “How rare to see such notable people endorsing an immigration during the expulsion period,” says Chew.4 continued on page 60

Jessica Chew moved to Red Bluff to care for her ailing grandfather, Joe Chew, in December 2020. His funeral turned out to be eye-opening for her. “I knew he knew a lot of people,” she says. “I just didn’t know how many. After my grandfather passed away I realized the magnitude of the relationships. When you put all the stories together, it makes a town.” She’s been on a mission to uncover and share those stories ever since. In 2023, Jessica and others began a series of public events celebrating the designation of Historical Chinatown Alley in the town. To underscore the alley’s importance, they have staged film screenings, book, art and dance events, as well as a Veterans Day ceremony highlighting the contributions of Chinese veterans. While the upcoming Lunar New Year celebration is considered a culminating event, they still look forward to a book release on the Chinese history of Tehama County this year, as well as the designation of the Chinese portion of the cemetery as a historical landmark. Visitors to the February 4 event can expect vendors of various Asian and Pacific Islander cuisine, tai chi and other cultural demonstrations, as well as the dragon parade and then lion parades that will open with a blessing of great power, good luck and strength for the residents of Red Bluff. It will culminate in a walking tour of important sites in the Chinatown Alley history. The dragon dance was last performed in Red Bluff on July 4, 1908, when Wong Foey paid $2,000 to ensure a dragon to travel from Marysville for a very special community performance. His descendants are sponsoring this year’s performance from San Francisco. Jessica Chew is quick to note that this is a more expansive celebration of the Lunar New Year, to incorporate traditions beyond the Chinese. There will be traditional dances by luMien and

She’s hoping even more are discovered when the book is released. “We want to track them all down and make sure their history is highlighted.” “There’s a lot in Red Bluff that they (residents) can be proud of about their Chinatown,” says Chew. “I’m certainly very proud of it.” •

YOU NEVER FORGET AKILI THE ELEPHANT “I'VE BEEN ACCUSED of being a dreamer. People will say, ‘Hey Ryan, you live in the clouds. Put your boots on the ground.’ And after you hear that a bunch of times, you're like, what's wrong with me? Why do I think all things are possible? And as I look back, I realize a lot of it goes back to my grandmother and her elephant,” explains Ryan Ponsford, the grandson of Dotty Olson, who raised an elephant named Akili for 20 years in Etna, California. Akili was an African elephant, rescued from poachers and brought to the United States. To Dotty, she was a 50year dream come true. “When my grandmother was 9, my

great-grandmother bought her this little set of porcelain elephants as a gift, and my grandmother fell in love with them. She told her mom, ‘One day I'm going to get a reallife elephant.’ In fact, she said that to everybody, and they made fun of her. They called her Dotty the Dreamer or the elephant lady. Well, she ends up getting married and moving to Etna where she owned and operated Dotty’s Jolly Cone, now Dotty’s Corner Kitchen. And then one year on my grandparents’ anniversary, my grandparents went to Winston, Ore., to the wildlife safari. My grandmother wanted to meet the elephant trainer, and when she got 4 continued on page 66

there, there was another guy there too named Bill York. He was a real-life Indiana Jones with the hat and the cargo pants and the whole bit. And he had just returned from this rescue mission in Kenya where he brought back nine baby elephants because their whole herd had been poached. He was trying to find them homes, so he was visiting all the wild animal parks around the country. Well, my grandmother heard this, and she somehow convinced Bill York that she was supposed to have one of those elephants. So, in 1979, she ended up bringing home her own baby elephant.” Dotty named her elephant Akili, a Swahili name that means “smart and intelligent,” and very quickly, Akili became a star attraction in the small ranching community, where she was a regular fixture in her enclosure next door to the Jolly Cone. Kids would come for ice cream and elephant rides, and she was always part of the local parades. To this day, locals still remember her fondly. “She played harmonica, she could shoot a basketball, she could do all kinds of different things,” Ponsford recalls. She was also something of a painter. “We would put up an easel and a canvas and give her a paintbrush. It took her a little while to figure it out, but she did. She picked her own colors and lines. She painted every canvas differently. My grandmother would say, ‘Akili, sign your name.’ And she'd put a little mark on the bottom corner of her painting.” 4 continued on page 68

“They say an elephant never forgets in part because if one of the matriarchs passes away from the herd, the herd will return to that spot for a full mourning ceremony year after year. It’s a real connection. And Akili’s understanding of people and emotion was incredible. She could just sense things. She'd stick her trunk out, and you’d blow in her trunk, and that was saying hello and giving her a kiss. You could rub the inside of her mouth and she'd purr, like a real deep grumble. And she'd give you a hug where she'd put you in between her front legs and hold you there, which was also sort of terrifying.”

Ponsford can’t narrow down a single favorite memory of Akili because just her existence made his entire childhood magical. “We would spend all our summers up in Etna helping with Akili. One year, my grandma traveled with the circus for a summer. So, my mom, who was a musician, wrote a song about it and all of us cousins went to where they were performing, and we sang that song to open her act. Even sitting on Akili’s back while she's cruising around grazing. It was just a different connection as a kid growing up that’s hard to fathom. You can hardly describe it to people. But it really helps make you who you are. And now our whole family has this kind of unusual mindset that all things are possible, and we embrace the quirky and whimsical. My mom used to say, ‘as long as everybody thinks you're a little bit crazy, you can get away with anything you want.’” Akili and Dotty have both since passed away, but Dotty’s Corner Kitchen and the Community Pool still bear Dotty’s name, and Akili has been memorialized in a town mural. He also grins when he talks about the level of commitment owning an elephant requires. “You can’t just go away for a weekend. P L A N E C R AS H S U RV I VO R N A N CY D E L L A M A R I A NANCY DELLAMARIA wants to tell you about posttraumatic stress disorder. This 54-year-old Redding woman considers herself wellexperienced in trauma after a 10-year series of near catastrophes, any one of which could have ended her life. From a rattlesnake bite, to blood clots leading to a pulmonary embolism, to discovery of a congenital brain stem malformation and the delicate surgery to correct it, to bailing out of her car to escape possibly being immolated by a gas tank puncture, she feels qualified to say something about living with PTSD. “You can shift your mood. Shift your energy,” she says. “Take a walk outside and just go somewhere other than where you’re sitting with sadness or feeling bad about things. I know that for myself, I’ve had to almost force myself into not getting caught in overwhelming sadness or depression. But I’m still letting myself feel sad, you know? Facing some really, really difficult things.”

Her voice breaks. “See? I’m letting myself feel sad right now.” Mind you, those really, really difficult things were not caused entirely by the ordeals listed above. She sees them more as omens. No, the crowning event that would test her resilience was the plane crash. Dellamaria and her 16-year-old daughter were passengers on four-seat, single-engine aircraft flying them to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Stanford. Chloe King had discovered that she had the same congenital brain stem malformation as her mother and was to undergo the same surgical procedure to correct it. The pilot botched an attempted landing at Palo Alto Airport and took to the sky to circle around and try again. The small plane roared in too low, snapping treetops as it angled into the ground. It overshot land and splashed into marsh waters at least 30 feet from the shore. The pilot did not survive. Dellamaria and King found each other alive and 4 continued on page 72

conscious, but hurt. Each coped with the impact in her own way. King started screaming. Dellamaria crawled out of the broken fuselage, but beginning to feel the extent of her injuries, she laid down on a wing and waited for help. King, pushing back the pain of whiplash, willed herself to think. She called to the pilot, reached out and shook him. No response. Then she turned to her mother. “I didn’t know at the time how severely she was injured. And I was floored that she was not freaking out as much as I was,” the now-21-year-old recalls. “I was in flight mode and she just seemed so calm that it was unsettling.” Five years later, Dellamaria looks back at the good parts. “We had all the conditions right for us to survive,” she says. “We landed in the bay, so we didn’t go up in flames due to fuel leaking in dry grass. She spent a month at Stanford University Medical Center, during which time King recovered enough from minor injuries to have her surgery. PTSD plagued them both. Dellamaria recalls that for a year or two after the crash, she found herself locking on the sight of an approaching aircraft and she couldn’t stop watching until she was sure the plane wasn’t crashing. King experienced similar thoughts. “My brain would trick me into thinking something bad was happening even if it wasn’t,” she says. “Say, the dishwasher was left open in the kitchen. I would vividly see myself tripping over the door and feel myself hit the floor without it actually happening.” Today, Dellamaria wants to tell her story, because she figures it could help others going through rough times. As a medical technologist in MRI and X-ray, she helped others all her life. Retired now, she continues to help others as a lactation consultant, volunteering with support groups for breastfeeding. She believes telling a story that will help others will help her, as well. “Honestly it took like three years before I could even talk about it without crying,” she says on the verge of tears. “We’ve had incredible therapists and we’ve come a long way. It was pretty intense for about two months after the crash and then slowly got less and less vivid and happened less frequently. It took about four years for the visions to go away completely.” Part of recovery for both women was overcoming survivor’s guilt, and King found a unique way. “I had some very tough times coming to terms with the fact that I had lived thought an event that had killed someone else,” she says. “But I had a very beautiful way of reframing that thought. I now live, in part, for him. His life may have ended but I can go on and not allow this tragedy to stop my life. I can grow and experience beautiful things and build a life in honor of him.” She is also encouraged by new strength she sees in her mother. “I think she is saying yes to more things in life than she ever has before. And she is experiencing more good things because of that. After a tragic experience like that, you have a realization of what life has to offer. And so, how can you not say yes?” Dellamaria is saying yes to finding words that will help. “I don’t want to leave this life without documenting my story,” she says. “But part of the problem is I feel like I have so much information that it’s really hard to get it all out and down. I’m just trying to give a message to others that they can be resilient, too. My main thing is just telling people, ‘Don’t give up. Life does go on. We are still here, you know?’”•

“Come over here, kid, learn something. You never know, you might have to cook for 20 guys someday. You see, you start out with a little bit of oil. Then you fry some garlic. Then you throw in some tomatoes, tomato paste, you fry it to make sure it doesn’t stick. You get it to a boil, you shove in all your sausage and your meatballs. And a little bit of wine. And a little bit of sugar, and that’s my trick.” THAT’S 82 WORDS of unpretentious culinary genius right there. And a classic scene from one of the greatest films in the history of American cinema. Simple. Iconic. And delicious. This, of course, is the legendary passage in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 blockbuster “The Godfather.” Peter Clemenza (played brilliantly by Richard S. Castellano) teaches Michael Corleone (a young Al Pacino) how to make Sunday gravy – or sauce. It’s a quick scene that doesn’t contribute much to the plot, but it is Castellano’s second-most-memorable line in the film. (What could be better than “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli”?) Sunday gravy is a classic dish among Italian Americans – and it has as almost as many names as recipes. Spaghetti sauce. Italian gravy. Bolognese. Picadillo. Ragù. It’s a simple, meat-infused gravy, often made on Sundays. The extended family would gather around the family table and enjoy the gravy over pasta or polenta. The earliest documented recipe for a tomato-and-beef based sauce served over pasta can be found during the late 18th century in a northern Italian village named Imola, near Bologna. The chef, Alberto Alvisi, prepared the meal for the future Pope Pius VII. Over the years, many cultures and cooks have contributed to evolution of the recipe. Most families have a recipe that was handed down from generation to generation – each with their own spin on the basic ingredients. Some like it without sugar. Some like more garlic. But just about every family member loves a good Sunday gravy. One side note: I have a younger sister who makes the best spaghetti sauce I’ve ever tasted. I’ve had it at least a half-dozen times and all I can tell you is that it is flawless. She learned the recipe from her Italian-born mother-in-law who lived next door to her. I’ve begged her for the recipe, but she claims there isn’t one. She does it by feel. Just like Chef Clemenza. Enjoy!

GRAVY ALLA CLEMENZA INGREDIENTS • 2 T olive oil • 3-4 garlic cloves • 2 6-oz. cans tomato paste • 1 28-oz. can of crushed tomatoes (San Marzano preferred) • 1 28-oz. can of diced tomatoes • 5 Italian sausages, grilled and sliced • 1 lb. meatballs, cooked (about 10-12 meatballs) • A splash of Italian red wine (Chianti works fine) • ⅛ cup sugar

INSTRUCTIONS Step 1: In a large pot, heat the oil over medium to low heat. Add garlic and cook with the oil for 1-2 minutes, being careful not to let it the garlic burn. Step 2: Add the tomato paste to the garlic. (“You make sure it doesn’t stick,” warns Clemenza.) Step 3: Add (or “shove in,” as Clemenza says) canned tomatoes. Stir continuously until the sauce is smooth (about 8-10 minutes). Step 4: Add in your (cooked) meats and stir until incorporated. Step 5: Add a splash of wine and sugar to taste. Step 6: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer at the lowest level for 60-90 minutes – stirring occasionally. •

INGREDIENTS: 1 6–8 lb. prime rib roast 1 T seasoned salt 1 T pepper 4 T fresh garlic, crushed or minced ½ lb. butter

Q&A WITH S H A S TA C O U N T Y ARTS COUNCIL

Enjoy: What are the Shasta County Arts Council’s mission and goals? Hill: Education, Support and Practice. The Shasta County Arts Council curates classes and workshops for all ages and skill levels in many areas of artistic expression. We provide a platform for local professional and emerging artists to display and sell their work in our Old City Hall gallery and pop up shows throughout the year. We also act as a fiscal sponsor for arts start-ups on their way to becoming independent not-forprofit organizations. The Arts Council applies its belief in a community that creates together through the hosting of arts events, the push for public art, and the sharing of arts opportunities and affairs in weekly email newsletters. Enjoy: What key programs does the Arts Council offer? Hill: We curate a new gallery of visual arts works every month. We hold a yearly holiday boutique for local artists to sell their work. We participate in First Friday, and we host or sponsor dance, music and visual arts classes. We have also created arts coalitions, including theater, media and dance. Members can access our online musician database to hire a musician or a music teacher. We are also the organizing administrator for the Redding Cultural District. Enjoy: How is the Arts Council funded? Hill: We apply for national, regional and state grants, and as a partner with the California Arts Council, we receive a grant for operations to support our staff. We receive community sponsorships and donations, as well as a small percentage of fees from gallery sales. We rent out the space at Old City Hall, the home of the Arts Council. Our events generate ticket sales. Enjoy: Share some examples of arts and cultural events organized by the Arts Council. Hill: We support and collaborate with many of our Cultural District partners, as well as organizing our own events. Examples include Redding Roots Revival, First Fridays Downtown, annual Beer & Wine Festival, monthly gallery openings, musical concerts and many more. Enjoy: How does the Arts Council’s unique setting contribute to its impact? Hill: Old City Hall is right in the heart of the Redding Cultural District which gives the Arts Council the opportunity to be involved in wonderful arts and cultural activities throughout the year. We are honored to be a partner and a part of the cultural district. Enjoy: What role does the Arts Council play in promoting arts education and engagement, especially among youth? Hill: For us, arts education includes drama, music, dance, spoken word, new media, visual arts and arts promotion. Recently, we facilitated videography workshops for Indigenous Youth called “Culture Quest.” For more than 20 years, we have conducted the Annual Juried High School Art Competition, which showcases about 14 high schools county-wide. For the last six years, we have been holding a middle school edition of the competition. Students have the opportunity to meet the juror artists, hear them speak about their professional experiences, the jurying process, and ask questions. For younger students, we facilitate winter and summer art camps that provide engaging and fun instruction in visual arts. We are also is in the beginning stages of a partnership with Shasta Office of Education and Shasta County Probation Department/Juvenile Hall to create classes, artist residencies and artists in schools programs. We are also working on the creation of artists/technical artists internship programs with community partners. Enjoy: What volunteer opportunities are available? Hill: We frequently have volunteer gallery docents and assistants installing exhibitions or receiving art for upcoming shows.
