HOW DO I SEE MY TOWN: BEAUTIFUL AND COMPASSIONATE My town holds you in the center of itself with beauty on every side. Beauty as buds burst forth in spring, beckoning wonder. Beauty in the farms on the side of the highway, livestock grazing on hills, tucked behind white-lined fences. Beauty in the face on the opposite side of the road as you wave in familiar passing. You know each other, though you’ve likely never met. Geographically, my town is stunning. Surrounded by lakes, rivers, and streams. Rolling fields with large sprawling oaks that vary from vibrant green to warm washed wheat as spring gives way to summer. Great pine-filled forests, and a 360-degree view of snow-capped mountains in fall and winter – the views in each direction are my favorite. When I’m away, I miss it. In a simple drive to school I am met with scurrying wildlife, melting colorful sunrises, gorgeous fog, and the occasional thunderhead clouds. I am constantly filled with gratitude that I get to live here. My town is a safe-haven. It’s the place I’m honored to raise my children in. It has a small-town feel, with big-town dreams. I appreciate the friendly banter at the grocery store, the compassion felt in a question asked. I appreciate how few stop lights and intersections we have. What we lack in traffic, we make up for in camaraderie. We do well in triumph and trial. My town is generous, thoughtful and kind. As a photographer, my town has been my playground. Growing up off the grid, I found a passion for chasing sunsets at an early age. I primarily shot nature those first few years. Then I learned that something on the inside of a person could be captured on the outside, in an image. From Old Shasta to Lassen Park and all the city streets in between, you can find me here, laughing my fool head off, attempting to capture the beauty and compassion in my clients that become friends.

G R E G TA K E M OTO A N D REDDING MUSIC SCHOOL GREG TAKEMOTO stuck to his guns. Or horns, rather. He was in the fourth grade and under some pressure to play the clarinet. In a minor act of defiance, he picked up the saxophone instead. It turned out to be a great choice. Takemoto started taking lessons from Roger Hogan at the Brass Reed and progressed through Parsons Junior High and Enterprise High School, including a stint with the award-winning Enterprise Starship under the direction of Dan Neece. Chico State University, on a scholarship, followed, as did the beginning of a professional career. When he wasn’t in class or performing with the university’s big band, Takemoto started sitting in with various funk and groove bands and playing gigs at regional music festivals. In 2003, after two years at Chico, an opportunity developed to study with renowned saxophonist Greg Abate in Providence, R.I., and Takemoto jumped on it. That move opened up a host of opportunities and Takemoto soon found himself playing in a popular wedding band, fronting his own jazz combo and teaching at Rhode Island Philharmonic. “I started meeting the right people,” Takemoto says, and those connections– coupled with innate talent and a rigorous schedule of daily practicing – led to a 20-year stint of teaching and performing. Rather than the idea of a jazz musician in Redding being a “foreign concept,” Takemoto says he’s excited about a time in the near future where “Redding is known as a town with good jazz musicians. How cool will that be?” Jeff Jones, a retired park ranger who plays in the Redding-based band Sax Therapy and teaches twice a week at The Music Connection, arranged for Takemoto to sit in during a concert at Old City Hall and was impressed with what he heard. “He sounded great. He’s a very accomplished player and I was impressed with him as a person,” Jones says. “He’s got the passion and the talent and considerable experience, as well. He has a lot to offer. I hope some of the school teachers will encourage their students to step up and take some lessons. It’ll definitely improve the quality of bands in middle and high schools. “What Greg has in mind could be a real asset to kids. launch the careers of several professional musicians and appearing in the 2016 movie “The Comedian,” starring Robert DeNiro, Leslie Mann and Danny DeVito. And now he’s back in Redding and ready to help aspiring musicians of all shapes and sizes. “My whole point is to show kids you can have a future beyond high school band,” Takemoto says of the Redding Music School, the downtown business he opened in the fall with his wife, Shellrose. “If you want to pursue art, it’s possible beyond this little ecosystem. There’s another world out there.” Takemoto, 40, admits opening a music school is a bit risky and says he could have taken the easier route and signed on to teach at an existing school, but he has a vision and part of it is providing a comfortable place for parents and children to focus on lessons. “I’m offering a choice, and with some kids it will change their life. What makes us happy? Progress and doing things. Music sets up those levels and reveals that progress so you don’t feel that you’re not growing. “My goal is to bring the positivity and show kids that it’s not a scary thing.” Takemoto picked up a passion for teaching during his time in Rhode Island, working with jazz studies and woodwind students at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School and serving as the band instructor for 13 years at Our Lady of Mercy middle school. He returned to his hometown to be near his parents, Michi and Chris Takemoto, and to enjoy a safe community to rear his 6-year-old son, William. Takemoto also left the East Coast because he sees Redding as being full of musical potential. “Redding is primed,” he says, “like a coiled snake.”

LOVE. Unity. Peace. Harmony. They’re the values that should drive us every day - but in case you need a reminder, just take a stroll through downtown Chico. Colorful murals emblazoned with these powerful words are relatively new to Chico, but they’re quickly becoming so iconic that people have staged wedding photos in front of them. And the heart behind them, Jedrek Speer, couldn’t be more delighted. Speer was born and raised in the Chico area and got involved in the street art and graffiti community after moving to Los Angeles. After living there for nine years, he moved back to Chico with his wife and two children. “I felt like the community lacked the vibrant inspiration that a bigger city like LA or San Francisco has,” Speer says. “There’s a big mural explosion right now all over the world. Murals really do change a community, whether someone’s
bummed out and they drive by and they see something that makes them happy, or someone gets inspired that there are bigger things possible than they imagined.” His medium is mural-grade spray paint, which can withstand repeated beatdowns by the sun’s ultraviolet rays, and his messages are beautifully simple. “I’m really into typography and words, and I had this idea for a big word, like ‘Love,’ huge on the wall, and Colleen Winters from Lulu’s loved that idea,” Speer says, so she commissioned him to paint a mural on the exterior wall of her business at Humboldt and Park avenue. With the Love mural, “I bit off a lot more than I could chew for sure,” Speer says, adding that it took six 18- to 20-hour days to complete it. “I couldn’t use a projector for that one, so I printed outlines on massive pieces of paper, rolled it down4 continued on page 24

and sprayed through perforations that allowed me to get my guidelines. Then it was freehand from there.” The rainbow-colored Unity mural followed later that year on the Shubert’s side of the Boys and Girls Club of the North Valley. That one was on a similar timeframe, where he left his day job on a Friday afternoon and painted until the wee hours of the morning, then worked almost around the clock all weekend before wrapping things up that Monday morning. Speer’s stepsister, Jessica Peck, handled many of the logistical details for the Unity mural and describes it as “huge and bright and just lovely,” adding that the time of day and the weather appears to change the mural’s color and texture. “And the Love wall is right by Shubert’s, so it’s seen by every group of humans who know Chico,” she adds. Once Love and Unity were complete, Speer chatted with the folks from the Peace and Justice Center in Chico about embellishing their wall. “I was going to paint it myself and I mocked up a couple ideas,” Speer says. “But Shepard Fairey painted peace and justice murals all over the world, and I thought, ‘You know, I think he needs to paint the peace mural.’” Speer had met Fairey while living in Los Angeles. The worldrenowned artist is the founder of OBEY clothing and is perhaps best known for creating the “HOPE” poster that supported Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. Fairey sent a team of artists to paint the mural at 526 Broadway in mid-August. The justice center raised nearly $6,000 to pay for the red, black, gold and white Peace and Harmony mural. “It took forever and we had to jump through so many hoops, but it’s awesome and a huge success and people are shocked that we have some of his art in our town,” Speer says. “As much as I love painting murals, I want to see other people’s art. I want to bring artists from around the world to paint murals.” Though he doesn’t have anything specific on the horizon, he anticipates orchestrating at least another mural or two before the end of the summer. “The murals I’ve painted here have made a much bigger impact than I expected,” Speer says. “Here, people are really taken back – they’ll say ‘that really touched me,’ ‘that really means something to me,’ or ‘boy, this is what the community needed.’ People take their wedding photos in front of them – and I was just trying to add a little bit of color. It’s also been a huge impact on my kids. They’ll say, ‘Hey, my dad painted that,’ and I can tell they’re really proud of that. Executive Director Debra Lucero says public art carries immeasurable value. “Murals are an expression of creativity from a local community,” she says. “They are oftentimes the most visible public art that we have. They inspire while motivating us to consider something outside ourselves. They also feed a great desire in today’s fast-moving world to stop and take a selfie. More murals. More inspiration. More beauty!” That’s certainly the muralist’s desire. “I want people to take away a general sense of inspiration,” Speer says. “The word that’s on the mural, Unity or Love, that’s what I want them to take with them. I want it to add to a sense of pride in the community itself – this is Chico, it’s a really unique place, it’s really special. IT’S NEARLY Valentine’s Day, and you’re looking for a special restaurant to take that special someone. A restaurant that exudes love – from the care of the food in the kitchen, to the smile on the face of your server, to a quiet, romantic atmosphere in the dining area. You want all that, and perhaps just a bit more. You want Cafe Paradisio, nestled in the heart of downtown Redding. The restaurant aims to help patrons enjoy a journey around the world of taste. In the United States, we savor the Hawaiian pork tenderloin, then overseas we visit the creme brulee of gay Paris, chicken marsala in ancient Rome, followed by a flip to the other side of the planet for the delight of coconut curry from Thailand. For a restaurant to be able to convey to customers this
much feeling through taste, its kitchen must be run not by a master cook, but by a true chef. “A cook just wants a paycheck,” says Travis Overholt, as he shakes a flaming pan of firecracker shrimp over a burner. “A chef does this because he loves it.” Overholt earned his degree in food from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena. He initially pursued strictly culinary studies, but later added hospitality, which extended his skill set to wine and hotel management. As a finishing touch to his education, he served gourmet cuisine in San Martino, Italy. Cafe Paradisio owner Marshall Glashan welcomed Overholt to his staff about a year ago, recuing the underemployed chef from a fast-food chicken outfit.4 continued on page 28 FEBRUARY 2019 www.EnjoyMagazine.net

“This is my strongest team ever,” Glashan says, including manager Katie Gonko and kitchen helper Aaron Pulice. “Travis is passionate about cooking. He’s the only chef I’ve had who will come out and check on a table personally to see how things are going.” “It’s called table touching,” says the chef with a grin. “Mostly, I want to see what they’ve taken away from what I serve on a dish.” He and Glashan agree Overholt is a perfect fit for Cafe Paradisio. “I get to showcase what I can do,” says the chef. “That’s what the customers love.” Glashan’s own degree in food and service came from the school of experience. While still attending Shasta High School, he landed his first job at a restaurant. “What I liked the most was interacting with customers,” he recalls. “After a while, I fell in love with the business.” He says customers began coming in and specifically asking for him to serve them, even if they had to wait for one of his tables to open. “That reassured me,” he says. “It was like, ‘Hey, you’re doing a good job. Keep it up.’” Now as the owner of his own restaurant, he is able to offer a bit more. His manager cuts fresh flowers daily to decorate the tables. Paintings by local artists adorn the walls for customers to peruse or to buy. And there is always music, his favorite tracks of jazz and blues, with live performances Friday evenings. Glashan says he see displays of open affection frequently among his customers, and this he welcomes. The small dining area – only about a dozen tables – nurtures a cozy, intimate atmosphere. “My favorite is when they get up and start dancing while they wait for their dinner – like, right there,” he says with a gentle laugh.
Some months back, an engaged couple picked up on this atmosphere through reports from friends. They decided to check out this Cafe Paradisio as a possible place for their wedding dinner. And they loved it. “The menu is varied, the flavors, presentation and portions will more than satisfy your senses and appetite,” says groom Gary Schuller. “The service is first class, a great combination of friendly, down to earth and professional. It’s the kind of place you feel you are out for a special evening, and at the same time it feels familiar, kind of like a favorite local spot that you want to return to and introduce your friends to.” Schuller and his bride Lorraine so loved the staff and the feeling of Cafe Paradisio, they took the only step further there was to take. Last October, they stood before the minister and their loved ones and exchanged vows in the restaurant. “Throughout the whole process, from planning to the final day, Marshall, Katie Mae and Chef Travis made it feel like we were planning our big day with friends,” Schuller says. “People who really cared that it turned out to be what we hoped for.” The newlyweds are regulars now at Cafe Paradisio. • Richard DuPertuis is a born writer and a new resident of Redding. First Ferry Crossing S C OT T S W E N D I M A N ' S S AC R A M E N TO R I V E R H O U S E
UP ON A HILL on the north side of the Sacramento River Bridge in Anderson sits a turn-of-the-century red barn. It overlooks Clover Creek as it winds past on its way to meet the river. The black locusts that twist and turn their way up to the sky tower above the bridge. During spring, thick vines with lush green leaves spiral up the rugged trunks, creating an enchanting canopy and a calm serenity. Later in summer, white flowers emerge and cascade down. A private driveway leads you past the red barn to the home. A house nestled among tall valley oaks seems to observe the beautiful landscape. While most will enjoy the beauty as they drive by, many are unaware of the hidden history that surrounds this area. The Sacramento River House and its property was the site of the first ferry crossing the Sacramento River. It is part of the trail known as the Immigrant Trail. The Emigrant Ferry or Immigrant Ferry began in 1852, became the Wells Ferry in 1853 and continued to operate until the Anderson Free Bridge was built in 1886. Wagon trains, livestock, carriages and travelers would gather in the pasture before heading on in hopes of discovering their fortunes. The first settlers planted black locusts to use for ax handles and shovels more than 150

years ago. Today, the locusts that line the northwest side of the bridge are a reminder of days when only a ferry could be used to cross the Sacramento River. In the 1890s, Vint and Laura Stevenson rented the property with their children, Merle and Mable. Later their third child, Thaddeus, was born in the existing house. Various people have owned the home over the years, and the current owner, real estate broker Scott Swendiman, fell in love with the property in 1996 and purchased it three years later. Vint Stevenson’s cousin, Christine Stevenson Jones and her husband, Chris, own a neighboring river property that was part of the original ranch. Both the Swendiman and Stevenson families are rooted in the area and are lifelong friends. After Swendiman’s daughter was married at the Sacramento River House, others began to inquire about the property. The result became an outdoor event space. Swendiman credits his three daughters and many friends and family members for their help. wedding. Growing up in the Redding area, I wanted something that incorporated the natural beauty of our town, as well as something that was unique. We were married under the arbor, which was beautiful, and our guests enjoyed the riverfront views and comfortable atmosphere. The whole place feels so welcoming and the property’s rich history was just the cherry on top.” Over the years, the property has been turned into an inviting space where guests can plan a true experience. Some improvements include clearing, irrigating and fencing the property. The historical home has also been renovated. The pastoral grounds are studded with majestic valley oaks and provide acres to explore and discover. One such discovery was the cable rigging for the ferry and the anchor used to hold the ferry if the rigging failed. A private boat dock and driving range allows guests to relax and play. An outdoor fire pit provides a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The property has been used for family retreats, weddings, birthdays, events and reunions. “Owning this property has been a wonderful opportunity for our family,” Swendiman says. “We meet interesting people who visit Redding for every reason imaginable. TEHAMA COUNTY’S 2 MANDIS ON A MISSION SPREADING GOOD CHEER IT WAS MORE than a shared name that forged the friendship and eventual business endeavor between Red Bluff residents Mandi Selvester-Owens and Amanda Jenkins, founders of 2 Mandis on a Mission. “We both love our community and we’re both very involved. We just kept running into each other,” says Selvester-Owens, 43, of how the two met. “Amanda started the 20/30 Club and I’m a Rotarian and a Cattlewoman and we just kept seeing each other.” Selvester-Owens was usually the quiet presence while out and about, often behind a camera filming for her business MNS Web Designs. Jenkins, 32, was the more gregarious, immediately becoming a Chamber Ambassador upon her move from Redding five years ago and founding the 20/30 Club of Red Bluff not long after.4 continued on page 38 FEBRUARY 2019 www.EnjoyMagazine.net

While Selvester-Owens was working in a world of precise, scripted video production, she was also taking note of the trends in live video production found on places like Facebook. Noting Jenkins’ bubbly nature, she invited her to participate in a Facebook Live video. The two had so much fun they began producing videos for Tehama County businesses under the moniker 2 Mandis on a Mission. “We’re both very involved in the Chamber,” says Jenkins. “We thought it would be a really fun way to promote local businesses. I love on-camera personality work.” “Being on camera is very new to me,” Selvester-Owens says, “But I got a degree in public relations and design at Chico State.” The combined talents of 2 Mandis on a Mission are bringing awareness through live video production that take the two Mandis behind the scenes and into some hilarious situations. The first 2 Mandis experience was a Facebook Live event at the Coffee Cafe in Los Molinos, where the two went out in their pajamas to film getting coffee. “Definitely you could tell it was our first video,” Jenkins says with a laugh. “We learned a lot of lessons out there. We probably should have had them make our coffees before we started. There was a lot of lull.” There was also a lot of joy. People started to take note of the fun the two were having. “We do it Dirty Jobs style,” says Selvester-Owens. “We want to be doing something at a person’s business that the average person can’t walk in and do, to give them a behind-the-scenes look,” adds Jenkins. This has meant donning protective suits at Jefferson Bee Company to learn how honey is produced and creating decorative Thanksgiving centerpieces at Tehama Floral. “I got my eyebrows waxed live,” Selvester-Owens says, indicating the increased risks the duo take for film. While doing a series of live video at the Tehama District Fair last year, the two were invited into the ring for cage fights and ended up doing a one-minute bout with the fighters.

“We were just going to set it up but then Amanda went a little crazy,” Selvester-Owens says. “The adrenaline got to her.” Notes Jenkins conspiratorially, “I really had to talk Mandi into it.” The pair also learned how to change a 1,000-pound tire during Monster Trucks. “We’re trying to be entertaining, to be honest, to have information out there,” she adds. The two Mandis are driven by a love of Tehama County, which for Selvester-Owens goes back decades. “I’m fifth-generation Tehama County,” she says. While she moved away for a while, “We moved back when I was eight months pregnant because we wanted to raise our kids around family.” Jenkins is a relative newcomer, and she jumped into her new life in Red Bluff with aplomb, running successfully for City Council and supporting the county’s Economic Development Program through contract work. She also loves to do radio work and emcee local events, such as parades and singing competitions. Their support of local entrepreneurs has even brought national attention, as when a video they produced for local stock contractors Bridwell Pro Rodeo was shared on the Wrangler Network and received more than 6,500 views. The fun, enthusiasm and reception of 2 Mandis on a Mission is spurring the pair onto bigger development goals, with plans to cut a wider swath through the North State. R O B E R T C R AY TO P L AY AT T H E C A S C A D E T H E AT R E ROBERT CRAY has been bridging the lines between blues, soul and rhythm and blues for the past four decades, with five Grammy wins and more than 20 acclaimed albums. Born in Columbus, Ga., he moved to the North Pacific Coast as a boy. Although his parents listened to gospel, jazz, soul and blues, it was the arrival of the Beatles in Seattle when Cray was in fifth grade that made him take up guitar. He played locally until 1974, when the first version of the Robert Cray Band was formed. With both Cray and harpist Curtis Salgado as vocalists/front men, they toured constantly in the Northwest and into California. Already, the band was creating original material and performing soul tunes along with straight-ahead blues. They attracted the attention of Albert Collins, who needed a band for his regular
Northwest tours. Collins chose his band and Cray took guidance and inspiration from The Master of The Telecaster, who became his lifelong friend. Veteran producer/songwriter Bruce Bromberg and his partner Dennis Walker took the band into the studio for its 1980 debut album on Tomato, but the label folded. In frustration, Bromberg formed the Hightone label primarily to push Cray’s career. The two Cray albums on Hightone received national radio and press attention. The band’s first national tour found it sharing a stage with John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon, who became close friends of Cray’s. Muddy Waters took the Cray band under his wing as an opening act, calling Cray his “adopted son.” 4 continued on page 44 FEBRUARY 2019 www.EnjoyMagazine.net

In 1985, Cray went into the studio with his mentor Albert Collins and The Texas Twister, Johnny Copeland. In four days, they recorded the classic “Showdown!” album. It scored a Grammy award as Best Blues Recording of the Year. Cray signed with Mercury and released his best-selling album, “Strong Persuader,” which included a major radio hit “Smoking Gun.” The album sold platinum, and Cray, the shy young bluesman, made the cover of Rolling Stone. He went to England to gig with Eric Clapton, who had become a huge Cray supporter. They later co-wrote a song for Clapton’s “Unplugged” CD. Then, Keith Richards brought Cray in to play with Chuck Berry in the film “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll,” and Cray’s old friend John Lee Hooker called on him to play on three of his comeback albums, including the giant hit “The Healer.” Cray loves the blues, but he loves soul music, too, as well as rhythm and blues, explaining the “rhythm” is the way he and his band have played from the beginning, and blues are the lyrics he sings. “We cover a lot of different musical territory. Somebody might be into the bluesier aspects of our show, somebody else might be into the Stax soul thing that we do,” he says. “And to me, those things aren’t too far away from each other, so a lot of people can really get into our music.” Some folks notice that he doesn’t do as many guitar solos as he used to. “I like to be a part of a band,” he says. “I like to play songs, not just solo on and on for 10 minutes. I guess that comes from all the soul music I listened to coming up; Steve Cropper playing all that great rhythm guitar with Booker T & The MG’s, Teeny Hodges playing behind Al Green and O.V. Wright.” He’s always been interested in playing nylon-string guitar in a Brazilian groove, though it takes a long time to get comfortable with that style of playing, he says. “I also dig Thelonious Monk a whole lot, but I could never play anything like him,” Cray says. “I just think you should keep your ears open to a lot of different kinds of music and be aware of what’s around you. I don’t have to play any of this stuff for public consumption, but I still want to know about it. And maybe in some way it does eventually come out in my music.” For his latest album, “Robert Cray and Hi Rhythm,” Cray traveled to Memphis with Grammy Award-winning producer Steve Jordan, making a classic soul album with Hi Rhythm, the band that helped create the sound that put soul singers Al Green and Ann Peebles on the map. TO RTO I S E AC R E S R E S C U E & S A N C T UA RY IN ANDERSON A SANCTUARY for tortoises in Anderson, California? I heard about Tortoise Acres a year ago when I was at an event at Haven Humane Society. My friends Kate and Ken Hoffman were there with a few of their adopted tortoises, and that took me back to my childhood in Southern California when it was not unusual to see someone’s escaped desert tortoise out for a summer stroll. We would take the tortoise home until we could find the owner. That seemed almost normal in SoCal, but Anderson? Welcome to Tortoise Acres, a most-needed nonprofit sanctuary for these beautiful, loving creatures who for some reason got lost, abandoned or just needed care and love when their owners could no longer care for them. They come to Tortoise Acres from 14 states, some actually shipped UPS, and others driven from as far away as New York. Momo and Tristan came from Paradise, survivors of the Camp Fire. Found in an enclosure by PG&E workers and badly burned, they were taken to Tortoise Acres for sanctuary and rehabilitation, with Momo making a stop at UC Davis to have a feeding tube installed. That’s how Ken kept Momo alive until he started eating on his own. I met a small box turtle, who was run over by an airplane landing on the Red Bluff Airport runway, his shell broken in many places. What a tale of survival! Cessna is doing well now at Tortoise Acres, thanks to the Hoffmans’ loving care. What started this love affair with these funny shelled creatures? Ken told me Kate had given their pet tortoise away to a family member, and after two weeks, missed that creature so much, she acquired two more. Now there are approximately 70 living at the sanctuary and at Kate’s Shampoodles Grooming in Anderson. Tristan the tortoise is 101, and still smiling with his original teeth. An African spurred foot sulcata can live to be 250 years old, and Tortoise Acres has two of them – Goliath (appropriately named) is a youngster at 27, and his buddy Sheldon (who took a shine to me, or maybe it was the whole head of romaine I fed him) is just a baby at age 15. Yes, they all have names, and to keep them straight, these tortoises sport name tags. Whoever thought a tortoise could be affectionate? They love to be petted on their shell. I was surprised to learn that their tough outer shell is sensitive to touch, and has nerve endings that respond to gentleness. And like a lot of living creatures, tortoises enjoy a nice butt rub – on the shell. Ken and Kate are connecting with a higher power at Tortoise Acres. HISTORIC MOUNTAIN RETREAT T H E S T. B E R N A R D LO D G E IN MILL CREEK ON HIGHWAY 36 about about a half-hour away from Lassen Peak and “somewhere west of Chester” is a quaint, historic lodge with horse stables and a creek running behind it. Walking into the seven-bedroom, two-bathroom estate, there’s a lobby with visitor information and a parlor off to the left with a rustic feel and fullystocked bar. To the right is a dining area where owners Jim Vondracek and Sharon Roberts cook all of their guests’ meals. The St. Bernard Lodge offers a welcoming atmosphere and warm, comfortable beds that are all too easy to pass out in after a day of exploring Lassen Peak or Lake Almanor. It’s questionable whether St. Bernard Lodge has always been as accommodating due to its lively history, but it certainly is entertaining to learn about and try to sort fact from fiction. It started with a contentious German family finding solace in the mountains of Northern California in the early 1900s and then making their mark in the lodging business throughout the next century. Originally, German immigrant Carl Fink went up north to join a surveying crew planning out the construction of Highway 36. This countdown is just what you need to plan in advance, as well as applying last-minute touchups for the day itself. SKIN—IN ADVANCE It’s never too early to take care of your skin – and not just because of a wedding. Regular facials are great for brightening complexions. Allow a minimum of three months lead-time for regular facials, having a treatment every four weeks. The week before your wedding, don’t introduce SKIN—DAY OF If you’re having your makeup done by a professional, discuss any new products to your skincare regimen, and avoid skincare for the wedding day in advance. They will prep your skin themselves and aggressive treatments such as peels and lasers, which could know best which products work with the makeup they’re using. If you’re doing cause a reaction. If you’re having your makeup done professionally, your artist will know how much time she has and when to arrive. Plan time for after-photo touchups, as well. Give one of your bridesmaids the task of keeping an eye on whether your mascara has smudged or your lipstick has faded so you don’t have to keep checking the mirror. It’s a good idea to keep powder on hand to combat shine throughout the day, as well as a lip balm or lipstick. HAIR—IN ADVANCE Bridal hair – it’s a big decision. Up? Down? Half up? Book a trial run with your stylist with plenty of time to spare so you can try out different styles, and bring pictures of your dress so you can both decide what might complement it best. Consider a HAIR—DAY OF Whatever you did for your trial run, do it again. If you washed it, morning appointment so you can see how the style holds wash it. If not, don’t. And try to use the same products, too. Remember to wear up and what products you might need for touchups. If something you don’t have to pull over your head while getting ready so you don’t mess deciding on a color, plan ahead – months ahead. If you’re up your hair, allow lots of time for styling and finish with plenty of hairspray to keep happy with the color, you can spend the next few months it all in place. IF THERE’S ANYTHING to know about the 2019 wedding season, it’s that there is a major shakeup afoot. Trends that have held strong for the last few years are making their grand exit in lieu of something different. And we are here for it.
The
Resurgence of
Vibrancy:
Rustic farmhouse chic had a good run, but this wedding season has couples excited about the visual appeal of industrial spaces and design elements. The mason jars and wildflowers of yore are taking a back seat to centerpieces and backdrops adorned with lightbulbs, vintage metal chairs and fabulously minimalist spaces. An old factory or warehouse might seem like a strange place for a wedding, but that old exposed brick will add just the touch of industrial chic you need to elevate your look to perfection.
While pastels will always hold a special place in our hearts, this season proudly welcomes the return of bold color. Pantone’s color of the year for 2019 is Living Coral and the color charts are abuzz with decadent shades of red, orange, gold, olive. Bold hues take center stage, not only in bouquets and centerpieces, but also in bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s suits and tuxedos.

It is, perhaps, the most difficult part of planning a wedding – not only because it’s necessary to have a budget that accommodates everyone on your invite list, but because of the potential fallout that comes if certain people fail to make the cut. Once you have your list of must-bethere people in place, you can go about planning that dream-worthy wedding. We won’t lie – the process is daunting and could become a bone of contention for family members who have specific people they want to invite. Laying down some ground rules before the guest list is formalized will be the key to keeping everyone happy. When all is said and done, this is your wedding to plan as you see fit. If you are from a huge family or if your parents are footing the bill and want to have some say-so in the guest list, The Sweet Petite likely isn’t the option for you.

If you find that the small wedding just won’t work given the sheer number of invitees, consider a middle-of-the-road sized wedding. You’ll still have time to connect with everyone in attendance and it’ll still feel like a party. The Happy Medium will require a slightly higher budget to cover the expense of food, drinks and seating, but proper planning and buffet style food (as opposed to individual plates) can make it so you still keep some money in the bank for a killer honeymoon and a down payment on a love nest. If you get anxious at the thought of a crowd bigger than 50 people, this isn’t your jam.

If you and your first cousins are as close as any siblings could be, if you’ve ever been called a social butterfly, or if you think of your coworkers as family, this is likely the only option that will suffice for you. You need the option to invite all of your loved ones from every walk of life – and you wouldn’t have it any other way. A big, love-filled party is just what you need – complete with laughter, dancing, hugs, hearty plates and full hearts. This is ideal for those who have never been married before, for young couples who love a good shindig, and those with a bit more in the budget to spare. Not to say that this can’t be done in a fiscally responsible way, but with more guests comes the incremental costs associated with keeping them fed, hydrated and happy. Don’t worry if you don’t have thousands upon thousands to spend on your wedding. With all that family, there may be a few aunts, uncles or cousins who would eagerly help with the food preparations and anything else you may need to make your wedding day a joyful experience. This isn’t an ideal size for a destination wedding or if you are set on spending time with each of your guests individually. SUPPLIES • Wood sign, found at craft shops • Paint or stain • Chalk • Pencil • Printable quote (printed in black and white) • Pen or paint for calligraphy
1. Look online for a printable quote for your sign. Make sure the font is what you want, because this is what you will copy onto your sign. Print your sign (we prefer black and white) at a print shop. After your sign is printed, on the backside, color chalk over your design so that every letter has chalk colored behind it.
2. Lay your printout over the top of your wood sign. Craft shops have plenty of options for DIY wood signs, but we made ours out of 1x4-inch pieces of wood cut to size and nailed together. Paint it a dark color - we suggest black, charcoal or dark-stained wood.
3. Using a chalk or a pencil, firmly trace your printed design. This step will transfer your design to the wood.
4. Pull away your print to reveal your design on your wood sign.
5. Trace over your design with your paint pen, or paint and brush.
6. Set on an easel, table, or hang for your guests to see!
TIP: YOU CAN USE THIS SAME METHOD FOR WRITING ON A CHALKBOARD.

DEBBIE UPSHAW ’S DANISH PUFF SERVES 6-8 This month’s recipe, submitted by one of our readers, Debbie Upshaw, is a perfect Valentine’s dinner dessert. Debbie has been making this delectable dessert for more than 35 years. She makes it during the holidays, but will often surprise her family and bake it other times of the year. So why not for Valentine’s Day? Sweets for your sweets! It’s so easy to make and your family will think you spent hours working on it. Thank you for this one, Debbie! Enjoy! DANISH PUFF INGREDIENTS: 1⁄2 cup butter, softened 1 cup flour 2 T water 1⁄2 cup butter 1 cup water 1 tsp. almond extract 1 cup flour 3 eggs (slightly beaten) 3⁄4 cup chopped walnuts POWDERED SUGAR GLAZE INGREDIENTS: 1 1⁄2 cup powdered sugar 2 T butter, softened 1 1⁄2 tsp. vanilla 1-2 T warm water

DANISH PUFF DIRECTIONS: STEP 1: In a bowl, cut softened butter into 1 cup flour. Sprinkle 2 T water over. Mix and form into a ball. Divide the ball in half. STEP 2: On an ungreased cookie sheet, gently pat each ball into thin 12x3-inch strips (or long rectangles). Leave about one inch of space between the two strips on the cookie sheet. STEP 3: Next, heat 1⁄2 cup of butter and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan. Bring it to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and quickly stir in almond extract and 1 cup of flour. Return to the stove. Use a very low heat and stir vigorously for one minute until mixture forms a ball. STEP 4: Remove from heat and add the slightly beaten eggs all at once. Stir until smooth and glossy. Divide in half. Spread each portion evenly over the strips on the cookie sheet.
STEP 5: Bake at 350 degrees for about 50-60 minutes or until topping is crisp and brown. Remove from oven and let cool. The topping will puff up in the oven and then shrink and fall as it cools. It’s supposed to do that! STEP 6: After it cools, frost with the powdered sugar glaze and sprinkle generously with chopped walnuts. POWDERED SUGAR GLAZE DIRECTIONS: STEP 1: Mix all ingredients in a small bowl until it is spreading consistency. Spread over the baked Danish Puff. Sprinkle walnuts on top. STEP 2: Cut into 1x3-inch strips, or 1x1-inch pieces.

Top 5 Reasons Students Should Complete a FAFSA Reach Higher Shasta strives to promote the awareness of financial aid opportunities for all Shasta County citizens pursuing a college education whether that be a vocational school, community college, or a university! To that end, we continue to advertise the fact that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application required for federal and state grants and is available online at www.fafsa.gov. Trust us when we state that the FAFSA is easier to complete than ever before because the FAFSA uses tax information from two years prior to the application year. For example, any person completing a FAFSA for the 2019-2020 school year would use tax information from year 2017! Listed below are the top 5 reasons a student should complete the FAFSA. 1. In order to qualify for Shasta College’s “First Year Free” program, all students enrolling in Shasta College as a “first time, full-time student” must complete the FAFSA by March 2nd. 2. In order to receive a Merit or Athletic Scholarship,
University Grant, Parent Loan, Student Loan, Cal Grant, Federal Pell Grant or aid from Work Study, a student must complete a FAFSA. 3. All university scholarships, Cal Grants, Pell Grants and Parent or Student Loan programs require an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) number and the only way to get an EFC is to complete a FAFSA! 4. Most general scholarship applications now require an EFC number. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to research available community, regional, state, and national scholarships on the Reach Higher Shasta Scholarship Database at https://reachhighershasta.com Open the tab for Parents/Students and slide down to Scholarship Database. 5. Completing a FAFSA promotes financial responsibility! VISUAL ARTS RED SCARF SOCIETY FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS IN 2004, a talented Polish pianist-student from New York’s famous Juilliard School was invited to Yreka to perform the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts’ first concert. This group of performing art advocates derived its name from the experience of the member who went to New York to book the group’s first performer. During her visit to the Big Apple, she wore a red, handmade scarf gifted to her for the purpose of the trip (New York being rather cold that time of year). To her delight, the red scarf was a hit in the big city. On her return, she and the group decided to honor the red scarf by giving their organization a fun, attractive name that would pique public curiosity. In attempts to raise community interest in the Red Scarf Society for the Performing Arts, more than 160 hand-knitted scarves have been given out to active members of the association and several sold to interested supporters. The society may have been named after a hand-knit fashion accessory, but the organization isn’t centered on knitting scarves. Its primary goal is to enhance the cultural life and promote the arts in Siskiyou County.
The Yreka Community Theater plays an essential role in the Red Scarf Society, being the main venue for many of the association’s concerts, having established its own Yreka Community Theatre Guild back in 1976. For more than a decade, the guild presented concerts to the community until its disbandment in 1990. In 2004, the Red Scarf Society took up and expanded the cause of the defunct theater guild. Its first concert was a success and the proceeds went directly into the restoration of the Yreka Community Theater’s Baldwin grand piano. In partnership with the Yreka Historic Preservation Society, the Red Scarf Society has also held concerts at St. Mark’s Preservation Square. It holds fundraisers to support projects and performances as well as outreach programs for the students in Siskiyou County. I am a first generation student. I never graduated high
school and wound up homeless as a teen. I ended up developing a successful business and eventually chose to reconnect with my family in Redding where I started attending Shasta College. I tested into some challenging classes and soared! Shasta College is a gem! The staff and faculty genuinely care about their students. Shasta College is the model system I promote whenever I speak at the state or national levels about students’ basic needs, and how an institution has the power to help its students. While at Shasta College I was encouraged to join the swim team, study field biology in Indonesia, and hold leadership roles in student government—all of which helped me when I transferred to a university. I am now a student at CSU, Humboldt, where I earned my B.A. in Sociology and am working toward a Master’s in Social Work. I have advocated for homeless undergraduates and helped create a student-run non-profit called the Student Housing Advocate Alliance. Because of my advocacy I have been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, I was selected as Student Advocate of the Year at HSU, and I was a student speaker at the CSU Basic Needs Initiative Conference in Sacramento. I feel like Shasta College was the launch pad to the successes I have had in achieving my educational and life-long goals!
