WALK the WALK Jefferson State Adventure Hub walks the walk … and bikes the bike … and paddles the kayak. Jasper and Melissa Hudson – along with sons Ryker and Rhett and shop dog Zip – don’t just sell terrific merchandise at reasonable prices. No, they know their stuff … because they’re often out in the vast North State using the same great products they sell at their Market Street store (down the street from S.J. Denham). “This isn’t just a business or job for us,” Jasper says. “Our family and employees truly care for our customers and want them to have the best experience outdoors with our products.” And just like their website says, “JSAHUB is where the greatest adventures begin!”• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

small

town — charm— let’s visit some local towns. in this issue: mt. shasta From indigenous peoples to spiritual-minded seekers to retirees and transplants who just want a slower pace, Mt. Shasta has drawn people to its glacier-covered slopes for generations. The town of Mount Shasta rose around the time gold was discovered in nearby Yreka in the 1850s, but the area has been inhabited by native peoples for as far back as 7,000 years.

6

Today, Mt. Shasta is a beacon on the North State horizon and the town of Mount Shasta still beckons people to explore the beauty of the mountain and the surrounding area. In addition to the 14,162-foot Mt. Shasta towering over the town, its elevation typically means Mount Shasta is cooler than Redding, whose summers can be notoriously sweltering. That means a short trip up Interstate 5 goes a long way toward not only cooling you down, but also to mentally chill with dozens of fun activities and amazing restaurants while enjoying the small-town feel and charm that makes Mount Shasta a home for many and a destination for all. One of the town’s biggest draws is the Mount Shasta Resort, where you can stay in luxurious chalets, play 18 holes on its championship golf course, enjoy fine dining at its restaurant and then receive a relaxing spa treatment.4 continued on page 8

Some of you may have heard the rumor that Mt. Shasta Ski Park is adding a new lift. They are excited to announce the Gray Butte Lift, adding five new runs on 88 acres of intermediate terrain and top out at 7,500 feet. Mt Shasta Ski Park offers the chance to get wild and it’s in our backyard. The 425-acre ski park only feels like a big-time Tahoe or Colorado resort situation on the slopes of Mt. Shasta, about an hour’s drive from Redding, but it’s more like family here.•

& THE ALCHEMIST Life is quite simply better with art. And that led Erika Bruser to take the leap to run The Luminaire & The Alchemist - a framing store, gallery and cafe in the heart of beautiful downtown Mount Shasta. The gallery has been at its N. Mt. Shasta Boulevard location since 1996, but Erika and her daughter Andi have been running things for the past 18 months. After teaching for the past seven years, her husband saw the opportunity to own the business. •

MT. SHASTA CITY KOA HOLIDAY It’s always a great day at Mount Shasta KOA. After all, their grounds are designed for your pleasure. From their 11 cabins with breathtaking views of Mt. Shasta to RV sites and even tent plots, Mount Shasta KOA is the perfect place to get out of Redding for a weekend or spend longer with family and friends. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com 900 N. The golf course is a fair, but tough, tour through narrow fairways with picturesque holes dotting the scorecard. But if golf isn’t your bag, let the others hit the links while you pamper yourself at the Sacred Mountain Spa, which offers everything from salon treatments to massages, facials and waxing. The Highland House Restaurant might have the greatest views of any restaurant north of San Francisco and serves lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. until closing off its delightful menu. If you feel like getting out on the water, nothing beats Lake Siskiyou. On the west side of Mount Shasta, the lake offers a chance to boat, swim or just relax in the summer sun. The Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort rents cabins, retro trailers, tents and RV sites, and also has a full-service marina with boat, kayak and paddleboard rentals. And the Splash Zone is a fun-filled water park for young and old alike. Lake Siskiyou also offers some of the best views of the annual Mount Shasta Fourth of July fireworks. In addition to Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, Mount Shasta KOA is a great place to set up camp in order to explore the city and region. With numerous tent, cabin and RV sites, the highly-rated camp off North Mt. Shasta Boulevard is always a good bet.

And while you’re out exploring, hiking, skiing or golfing, you’re sure to work up an appetite. Well, you’re in luck. The number of great dining options include Lily’s on South Mt. Shasta Boulevard, Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, Handsome John’s, Say Cheese Pizza, Alua’s Thrive Bar, Mount Shasta Pastry (which is much more than just pastries) … and of course the original Black Bear Diner. Just past Lake Siskiyou is another chance to stretch your legs and enjoy the wilderness just minutes from town. Castle Lake and Heart Lake are gems in the Mount Shasta area, each offering their own special pleasures. From paddleboarding on Castle Lake or hiking up to the scenic views of Mt. Shasta from Heart Lake, both are well worth a trip and a picture or three. Intrepid hikers who don’t necessarily want to go all in and scale Mt. Shasta, but want to feel what it’s like on the mountain can hike in the summer months from Bunny Flat to Horse Camp. The trail is used by summit climbers, but also offers a more-than-challenging one-day trek for those who crave adventure and picturesque views. The terminus at Horse Camp has a cabin owned by the Sierra Club … and always remember to leave no trace. Of course, one of the town’s main winter attractions is actually just a bit up Highway 89 - the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. With more than 425 acres of skiable terrain and plans for more with the opening of the Gray Butte Lift, the Ski Park offers a big-time ski resort feel in our own backyard. Mount Shasta is also home to the oldest trout hatchery west of the Mississippi River, and the Sisson Museum sits on the Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery property. The self-guided tours of the hatchery first opened in 1888 and are a fascinating look at how science and biology work together. In addition to all the fun destinations and activities, Mount Shasta also is home to a pair of amazing city parks - Mount Shasta Park and Shastice Park. From concerts to ice skating to ballfields, the parks are a cultural and gathering hub of the town. And perhaps one of the best kept secrets of Mount Shasta is its Fourth of July festivities. From a spectacular fireworks display to a good ol’ fashioned July 4th parade through town, the Independence Day celebration hearkens back to a time when life moved a little slower. Of course, it doesn’t have to be a holiday to stroll through Mount Shasta. A walk down Mt. Shasta Boulevard, the town’s main thoroughfare, offers a slower pace and a chance to check out places like the Fifth Season outdoor sports store, The Luminaire & The Alchemist, the Velvet Elephant Art Center or Soul Connections. In short, there’s a little bit of something for everyone in Mount Shasta. •

If Enjoy Magazine chronicles and highlights the best people, places and events in far Northern California, it’s only fitting that Enjoy the Store is a tactile representation of its namesake publication. Located in the heart of downtown Redding, Enjoy the Store is the embodiment of the magazine in real life. “It was a bit serendipitous,” James Mazzotta says. “By the sixth or seventh issue of Enjoy Magazine, we were getting calls about where and how people could find the local products we’d written about.” Organically, Enjoy Magazine spawned Enjoy the Store. “It seemed like a perfect transition to have a place where you could actually see and touch the things we wrote about. A brick and mortar shop to come alongside Enjoy Magazine,” says Mazzotta. And thus Enjoy the Store came to be. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

You don’t need to head to Napa Valley for a wine tasting experience. All you need is right here in the North State. The truth is that Redding and areas in Trinity, Siskiyou and Tehama counties have more than their fair share of vineyards, cellars and tasting rooms. After all … in vino veritas. While many wineries in the North State import grapes prior to fermentation, several use upstate Northern California’s climate to their advantage in growing the fruit of the vine. BURNSINI VINEYARDS in Cottonwood has been growing grapes for wine commercially since 2000. Its eight acres produce highquality red wines that are known well beyond Shasta County. The grounds are host to numerous community events throughout the year and their downtown Redding tasting room - inside Enjoy the Store - is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a glass or two while also picking up something from the store’s plethora of local handcrafted wares. Burnsini’s tasting room is at 195353 Hammers Lane in Cottonwood and open from noon to 5 pm weekends for tastings by the glass or bottle. The Redding tasting room is open from 4 to 8 pm Thursday through Saturday. ALGER VINEYARDS has used the rich volcanic soil, cool nights and snowmelt waters from Lassen Volcanic Peak to cultivate their vineyards in Manton for more than 40 years. Their tasting room is open from noon to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday with views as tasty as their varietals.4 continued on page 25

life is too short to drink bad wine MATSON VINEYARD, just east of Redding, was planted in 1981 and the winery has been bottling since 1984. Their Redding tasting room allows you easy access to their wines as it is stocked with the fruits of their labor and features picnic tables and a covered area to relax with lunch and a glass. They’re open from 1 to 6 pm Fridays through Sundays (year round). In addition to the vineyards, one of Redding’s most well-known wineries is MOSELEY FAMILY CELLARS. They source the best grapes from throughout California and Southern Oregon, giving them the flexibility to craft wines their own way. Since 2011, their wine tasting room at 4712 Mountain Lakes Blvd. is a perfect place to enjoy some of the finest vintages in Northern California. A novice to wine tasting? The folks at Moseleys will sit with you and teach you about different finishes in your quest to find a favorite. Tastings are available from 2 to 5 pm Friday through Sunday, and Moseley has a wine club you’ll be sure to want to join. A short drive - but well worth the trip - from Redding is NEW CLAIRVAUX VINEYARDS in Vina, where a fifthgeneration winemaker and Trappist monks came together to create handcrafted, award-winning wines. Their tasting room is open from 11 am to 5 pm daily. •

REDDING CIT Y GUIDE

Let’s face it … your dog is part of your family and probably more fun to be around than some people. So why not take Fido, Bella or Buddy on some of your North State adventures? There are adventures aplenty across Redding and far Northern California where you can bring your best friend … along with your human friends, too. There are dozens of dog-friendly trails in and around Redding - the self-proclaimed trail capital of California, but a spring and fall hike at Chamise Peak offers the perfect chance to get your dog out for some exercise with spectacular 360-degree views of the North State as well as the Three Shastas - Shasta Dam, Lake Shasta and Mount Shasta. The moderate, 4-mile out-and-back trail off Lake Boulevard offers wide paths and enough shade and overlooks to stop and rest while enjoying the views. As with many trails, there are chances for dogs to be off-leash, but beware of other hikers and mountain bikers sharing the trail.4

If you don’t want to scale Chamise Peak, the city of Redding’s Turtle Bay East off Bechelli Lane is informally known as The Dog Park and is an 80-acre off-leash area where dogs can run around on nicely manicured trails, romp with other dogs and even take a dip in the Sacramento River. As always, being a responsible pet owner means cleaning up after your dog and ensuring he or she is leashed in appropriate areas. If you want to escape the city, there are dozens of trails outside the Redding city limits, especially on the westside and along Clear Creek that offer a chance to roam and even cool down in a friendly watering hole. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, a North State gem just minutes west of Redding, is dog-friendly for the most part. There are many places inside the park where dogs are allowed, and the park’s website has its guidelines listed at www.nps.gov/whis/ planyourvisit/pets.htm (including them being leashed). Basically, pets are allowed on roads and sidewalks, in campgrounds and all hiking trails and most of the lake’s shoreline (except Brandy Creek Beach, Oak Bottom Beach, East Beach and the Whiskey Creek Group Picnic Area Swim Beach). Of course, dogs are allowed in your boat, and if you’re patient enough to teach Fido, just picture cruising around Whiskeytown’s tranquil waters with the pup on the front of your stand-up paddleboard or kayak.4 continued on page 42

While Redding summers are notorious for their sweltering temperatures, there are places in the surrounding mountains and foothills that offer a place to roam as well as a respite for the heat. A trip to Heart Lake outside Mount Shasta, a fishing expedition to the Hat Creek Area or camping near Trinity Lake all are good remedies to beat the valley heat. Speaking of heat, always remember to test the pavement during the hotter times of the year to ensure your dog’s paws can withstand the temperatures, and never leave your pet unattended in the car. And after you’ve tamed the wild, it’s likely time to relax and refresh, and there are a slew of petfriendly restaurants in Redding and surrounding towns that understand the importance of hanging with the pup. Fall River Brewing Company’s taphouse on East Cypress Avenue in Redding allows good boys and girls on a leash. Their brewery on Eastside Road in Redding also is a great place to hang with your four-legged friend. The giant warehouse setting is cool enough for Buddy to chill while you knock back a pint or two. Mosaic Restaurant also welcomes your dogs with a special dog menu which even includes a doggy dessert. While you can’t bring your dog into the restaurant proper, there are a number of great eateries that have patio access and love having dogs hang out, including Final Draft Brewing Company, Mod Pizza, Cinders Wood Fired Pizza and Wilda’s Grill. There are a host of websites devoted to pet-friendly places. But however you find about places that like your dog as much as you do, whether by a friend’s recommendation or a web search, one thing’s for sure … fun with Fido is just a better time. •

communityminded We love the North State and so, too, do the businesses in this guide. And whether they run a dance studio, operate a restaurant, sell you a home or work to enhance our minds and bodies, they all help make the area a better place to live. And while these businesses all look to make a living, it’s their desire to make Redding a better place that enriches our community.

If there’s something folks in far Northern California know, it’s the real deal. Maybe that’s why Cornerstone Community Bank is where it is today. Started in 2006, Cornerstone stands today as a key cog in the lives of its customers. Additionally, its outreach has become woven in the fabric of the North State. The locally owned and managed bank has a branch in Red Bluff, two in Redding and another in Anderson. Cornerstone didn’t set out to be the biggest bank, but rather one with big impact. “Our bank is built to serve the needs of our community,” says Matt Moseley, President and CEO. “Relationships are our lifeblood.” • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

CULTIVATING CULTURE

Since the beginning of time, the indigenous people of the North State have cared for and nurtured the land most of us now call home. Since its restored federal recognition in 1983, the Redding Rancheria Tribe has cared for its people and been a beacon of philanthropy in the North State community as a whole. The guiding principles of the Rancheria are serving others, working together, doing what’s right, embracing change, respecting differences and balancing life. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

SEW-CIETY Redding Fashion Alliance was founded in 2015 by Jan Kearns, Robin Fator and Rachel Hatch. They started by answering the question: “What if Redding had a bustling fashion industry?” What started as an idea is now a fully functional nonprofit organization. RFA is changing the quality of life in our community by fostering its creative economy, increasing living wage jobs, and providing designer guidance for high quality, small batch manufacturing of apparel, accessories and textile based products. With design, development, and small volume production studios in Redding, RFA creates an environment for independent designers and sewists alike. Since its inception in 2015, RFA has offered access to maker space; beginning through advanced sewing and fashion design instruction; workshops and networking events; retail opportunities for local makers and designers; collaborative programs with other local nonprofits that serve populations with a compromised socioeconomic status; and workforce development for future industry employment.• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

FLIGHT PLAN Hey Redding (region) - in case you missed it, the Redding Municipal Airport (RDD) has changed its name. As of June 21, RDD is now officially the Redding Regional Airport. The Redding City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to formally change the name of the airport. This rebrand has been long-desired by staff and community partners to elevate Redding’s airport’s true status as a regional airport that serves the North State. The airport’s consulting team, Mead & Hunt, Inc. also presented an Airport Strategic Plan update and an economic impact study. This study revealed RDD’s economic impacts to the region and to California’s economy, supporting more than 1,300 jobs and generating more than $218 million in economic output in 2021.• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

The show must go on … and it will be amazing. Riverfront Playhouse, the region’s longest continually-operating, non-profit community theater, recently celebrated the opening of its new facility at 1950 California St.in Downtown Redding. And while the pandemic might have delayed the curtain going up, rest assured, this year’s shows are spectacular. “The dedication and hard work to bring this theatre to fruition is a reflection of the tremendous generosity and commitment to the performing arts in the North State,” says Darryll Alvey, former president of the Riverfront Playhouse Board of Directors. “We are sincerely grateful to the volunteers and donors who made our vision a reality.” •

Headquartered in Redding, Lab24 is the North State’s local lab for blood work, toxicology and COVID testing.

YO U R LO C A L L A B In the past few years, North State residents have gotten to know Lab24 during the pandemic as the company has been serving the community with COVID testing. But the business founded in the North State in early 2018 is more than that. Lab24 is the local, fullservice lab that provides blood work, toxicology testing and, yes, COVID testing. Owners John Serle, Immanuel Roth, Julie McQueeny and Dr. Irwin Maier saw a need for a locally run lab “where test results could be processed faster locally (vs. being sent to other parts of the state) while providing local jobs and supporting the local economy.”• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com
