REDDING, CALIFORNIA With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, you can say we’ve got a sunny disposition around these parts. And that is reflected in the community around us. People have come here from all over the world, to visit and to relocate, and have repeatedly said that Redding folks are some of the friendliest people they’ve met. Maybe it is the sunshine that makes us happier here. Or maybe its the river that runs through it. The Sacramento River is California’s longest river and that makes for some great adventures. Raft, kayak or fly fish the river... yes, we do have the largest fly fishing business in the world located here (say hello to The Fly Shop). Or maybe its because of the many miles of trails that connect us to the beauty around us. We’ve also heard the rumor that we are the “Trails Capital of

California,” and we agree with that. But the sunshine. Let’s get back to the sunshine. Put the sunshine and the river and trails together and wrap them up in the Sundial Bridge, one the world’s largest working sundials, and you’ve got a mix for something very special. Maybe that’s why so many incredibly talented and gifted people have been drawn to Redding, setting down roots, opening up businesses and helping this city step into a new renaissance of culture and creativity. It’s the mix of beauty and nature and good people, blending together in perfect harmony, drawing the best of the best to Redding. In the pages that follow, we have the privilege of sharing some of these wonderful people and their businesses with you.

If Enjoy Magazine chronicles and highlights the best people, places and events in far Northern California, it’s only fitting that Enjoy the Store is a tactile representation of its namesake publication. Located in the heart of downtown Redding, Enjoy the Store is the embodiment of the magazine in real life. “It was a bit serendipitous,” James Mazzotta says. “By the sixth or seventh issue of Enjoy Magazine, we were getting calls about where and how people could find the local products we’d written about.” Organically, Enjoy Magazine spawned Enjoy the Store. “It seemed like a perfect transition to have a place where you could actually see and touch the things we wrote about. A brick and mortar shop to come alongside Enjoy Magazine,” says James Mazzotta. And thus Enjoy the Store came to be. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

In 1959, Mary Fazio began serving guests in a tiny pink house converted into a restaurant. Using $700 and the pans from her own house, Mary’s Pizza Shack would grow to 17 restaurants strong, including Anderson and Redding locations. “Although Mary started in Sonoma County, both Shasta County Shacks are locally-owned and operated,” says Charlew Byerly, Mary Fazio’s grandson. That’s something Mike and Stacy Giles say they’ve learned in the year since they bought Wyntour Gardens Nursery on Airport Road. “We’ve had people coming in daily and when the employees introduce us as the new owners, people sometimes ask ‘Can I give you a hug?’ ” Stacy says. “Many were worried it would close or be sold to a big box retailer. “Everyone’s been so positive that it’s remained locally-owned. But life intervened. “I got in a terrible mountain bike crash and found myself with a spinal fracture and broken ribs,” Dr. Royse says. In debilitating pain, nothing seemed to work and the prescription medication only worked to mask the pain. “I met an amazing Chiropractor that worked diligently to locate the root of the problem, getting me back on the mountain,” he says. “He didn’t try to mask with medications but showed me how amazing the body is, and how everything is interconnected! Hearing the Call

Ken Wood vividly remembers his church congregation praying about his hearing loss, comforting his mother who worried about her 8-year-old son’s congenital condition and that he had to wear hearing aids. After the service, in a show of maturity well-beyond his 8 years of age, Wood recalls comforting her and telling her that something big was in store for him. “It’s OK, mom. Maybe God has another plan for me,” Wood recalled. That plan turned out to be service of others as Wood has owned UpState Hearing Instruments since 1990. Larry David – Realtor The Real Estate Group Inc. 950 Mission De Oro Drive, Redding | DRE # 01970937 (530) 351-2904 www.530home.com

Larry David knows one thing for certain: real estate isn’t about properties or houses. “It’s about PEOPLE,” he says emphatically. The Realtor whose personal touch includes giving out his personal cell phone number, knows that MLS listings and square footage and property amenities are important, but buying and selling homes is more than that. “Many people state and believe that they would love to sell real estate or love to sell homes, that it would be fun to show houses,” he says. “It’s not about selling or buying a home. “It’s about people and their particular needs in the stage of life they’re in.”•

RELEVANT real estate

a matter of

relevance There is no bigger purchase than a house. And there are no better people to guide you along the process than the agents at Relevant Real Estate. “We wanted to do real estate different,” says Lynda Martz, the broker at Relevant. “We are a group of hard-working professionals who put our clients and community first. “With more flexibility on how we handle our day-to-day operations, we are able to focus on the needs of others in both the real estate world and our community.”

After all, while signing on the dotted line might not have changed, the real estate market in the 21st Century sure has. Sellers look for responsive realtors who can showcase their property to get the maximum dollar. And buyers often have homes in mind after scouring the internet. And that’s why Relevant Real Estate is … well, relevant in today’s marketplace. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

royalty Pete Metz knows that whether you’re purchasing a home or refinancing, it takes someone with the know-how and expertise to guide you through a sometimes complicated process. That’s why he ventured out on his own in July 2019 to start Von Mortgage after nine years working for another company. Under the umbrella of Celebrity Home Loans, Metz and his dedicated team of trained professionals work to offer competitive rates and great local service. Von Mortgage’s easy-to-use website allows customers to start the process through a simple set of questions that take you step-bystep to begin the process. Metz’s desire to build something of his own came from his sensible Midwest roots. Raised in Indiana and one of eight children, his father owned and operated a local carpet cleaning company for more than 40 years in Indiana. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

REDDING CIT Y GUIDE

thank you Jeannine Hendrickson Photography started 16 years ago when Jeannine fell in love with photographing her twin girls competing on their horses. Capturing that movement and grace inspired her. Her passion is wedding and portrait photography. She enjoys people and loves capturing special moments for them. Knowing her clients love their images brings her true joy. She loves her studio, which gives her the ability to produce one-of-a-kind portraits, adding another outlet for her creativity. Working with the business community, she enjoys meeting so many interesting people and she continues to be inspired every day. She considers herself truly blessed to be able to do what she loves. jeanninehendricksonphotography.com

Aaron Williams is a freelance writer who works as an editor and writer for MaxPreps, and is a co-founder of Shasta County Sports. Since moving to the North State in 2000, he’s been an involved community member as a journalist with the newspaper, as a teacher at Central Valley High School, as a youth sports coach and football coach at Shasta High School. He and his partner Michelle put his three and her two boys through high school, spending countless days and nights at football, basketball and baseball games. Now that their boys have all grown, Aaron and Michelle enjoy spending time hiking with their Mastiffs, Maui and Kona, traveling and going to concerts. Aaron has taken it upon himself during the COVID months to improve his once-dormant golf game and can be found weekly at one of the many great courses in the North State.
