Jefferson State Adventure Hub walks the walk … and bikes the bike … and paddles the kayak. Jasper and Melissa Hudson – along with son Ryker and shop dog Zip – don’t just sell terrific merchandise at reasonable prices. No, they know their stuff … because they’re often out in the vast North State using the same great products they sell at their Market Street store (down the street from S.J. Denham). “This isn’t just a business or job for us,” Jasper says. “Our

family and employees truly care for our customers and want them to have the best experience outdoors with our products.” And just like their website says, “JSAHUB is where the greatest adventures begin!” • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

There’s no way Brenon and Scott Odell could have known what they were in for when they opened Market Street Blade and Barrel on Jan. 1, 2020. The father-and-son endeavor was set to transform a restaurant that’d been around under different ownership for 20 years. They were going to take loyal customers, a great location and infuse it with their industry experience and transform it into Redding’s go-to spot. “We set out to serve the upper echelon of food and beverages that Redding has to offer along with unprecedented customer service,” the Odells say. “We cut our New York and ribeye steaks in house,” says Scott Odell, who adds they also sell their jalapeno and bacon ranch dressing at local grocery stores. “Our whiskey bar serves almost 300 different whiskeys as well as other handcrafted libations that include vodka, gin, rum and tequila.”•

IN THE LOOP expanding our trails to get around on foot, bike, skates or scooter

The new Diestelhorst to Downtowntrail/bikeway, which is almost complete, links downtown neighborhoods and businesses to the city’s popular Sacramento River Trail, making it easier – and safer – to get from one place to the other on foot, bike, skates or scooter. Diestelhorst to Downtown ties into a much bigger vision: The Downtown Connector Loop Trail. “With this loop, we are connecting the three most walkable districts: downtown, Turtle Bay and Hilltop (Drive),” says Anne Thomas, executive director of Shasta Living Streets, a nonprofit organization promoting bikeways and trails to support healthy communities. The loop is a mix of existing trails and streets. It encompasses the Cascade Theatre, California Street Labs, Caldwell Park, Redding Aquatic Center, Jump River Playground, Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Redding Civic Auditorium and other key places in Redding’s core. Downtown locations designated as part of the Redding Cultural District are connected by the loop. Redding has fabulous trails, and before, most people reached them by car, Thomas notes. “The Loop Trail allows people to get around without a car,” Thomas says.

14

And that makes for a healthier, more well-connected community. “When you make it easier, safer, comfortable, people come out.” From the Sacramento River Trail at Diestelhorst Bridge, the new connection offers two options for crossing busy Court Street: A crosswalk with flashing lights plus an island median or the new trail next to the Sacramento River that will go under the Diestelhorst and Court Street bridges and then up to Riverside Drive. Part of Riverside Drive has been transformed to a bikeway/walkway and closed to vehicles. From Center Street to California Street is a bicycle track (lanes for both directions) along one side of the street separated from vehicles. Thomas says this and other improvements underway will be a plus for North State residents and boost tourism. “This has always been a place where people want to be outside and be active,” she says. “This is absolutely within the character of our region.”• Story By Laura Christman www.shastalivingstreets.org

Carousel is an oasis of quality apparel in a market dominated by impersonal service and imperfect products. Since taking over the business in 2016, Suzanne Russell has focused on quality, customer service, and community in this downtown gem. Among the many satisfying parts of Suzanne Russell’s work at Carousel, three things in particular stand out. First, being a locally owned, brickand-mortar store in Redding means helping women find high-quality boutique clothing in town. “We have been located in the heart of Downtown Redding since 2012, and we are so very grateful to be a part of the brick-and-mortar experience in Redding,” Russell says. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

love& love &tradition A visit to Tantardini’s is like taking a trip to Europe without having to leave Redding. The family-owned European bakery-deli specializes in bringing the taste of the Old World to the North State with their food infused with love and tradition. Diego Tantardini came to America in 2012 from Milan, Italy, with his wife, Deborah Di Maso Tantardini, and two children. It was on a trip home that he realized just how different cuisine was compared to his new home. Tantardini’s was born in 2014. “We felt compelled to open Tantardini’s and let others experience our passion for food,” Diego says. “My inspiration comes from people enjoying the fruit of our labor. If Enjoy Magazine chronicles and highlights the best people, places and events in far Northern California, it’s only fitting that Enjoy the Store is a tactile representation of its namesake publication. Located in the heart of downtown Redding, Enjoy the Store is the embodiment of the magazine in real life. “It was a bit serendipitous,” James Mazzotta says. “By the sixth or seventh issue of Enjoy Magazine, we were getting calls about where and how people could find the local products we’d written about.” Organically, Enjoy Magazine spawned Enjoy the Store. “It seemed like a perfect transition to have a place where you could actually see and touch the things we wrote about. A brick and mortar shop to come alongside Enjoy Magazine,” says James Mazzotta. And thus Enjoy the Store came to be. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

FAMILY From humble beginnings in Boyes Hot Springs to becoming a Shasta County staple, Mary’s Pizza Shack is a true American success story. In 1959, Mary Fazio began serving guests in a tiny pink house converted into a restaurant. Using $700 and the pans from her own house, Mary’s Pizza Shack would grow to 17 restaurants strong, including Anderson and Redding locations. “Although Mary’s started in Sonoma County, both Shasta County Shacks are locally owned and operated,” says Charlew Byerly, Mary Fazio’s grandson. Just like his grandmother, Charlew and his wife Kathy carry on that can-do and entrepreneurial spirit that’s made Mary’s Pizza Shack a favorite for generations. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

cultural district

The City of Redding is home to one of 14 California Cultural Districts. Originating with the adoption of Assembly Bill 189 in 2015, the California Cultural Districts program aims to leverage the state’s artistic and cultural assets. The California Arts Council was tasked with developing and implementing guidelines that helped establish the designation, and in 2017, the first group of districts was created – Redding Cultural District among them. The districts highlight the cultural legacy of the state’s most valuable resource – its diversity. Each helps grow and sustain authentic arts and culture opportunities, increase the visibility of local artists and promote socioeconomic and ethnic diversity through culture and creative expression. In its program announcement, the California Arts Council stated, “Each community’s personal and generational commitment to these assets speaks of a state deeply invested in the places and people that celebrate local traditions and creativity. Our goal with the pilot launch of this new program was to support a group of districts that met high but broad standards of coherence, vision and purpose.” For Redding, the decision to enter the competition for designation was a reflection of the community’s long-term commitment to revitalization of the city. Much of the groundwork was prepared during the development of the Downtown Specific Plan, which was being revised and adopted in 2017. Key cultural and civic organizations such as the Shasta Historical Society, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, VIVA Downtown, City of Redding, Shasta County Arts Council, The McConnell Foundation and Redding Visitors’ Bureau came together to develop a competitive strategy which in the end won Redding the Cultural District

Designation. The friendly to arts, culture and history concepts as well as live/work and the greening downtown were some of the key approaches proposed – exactly the approaches the designations were meant to foster. The district strives to help draw nighttime activity, farmers markets, concerts, events, arts training and enterprise to the downtown core. These activities and development of live/work downtown all encourage a walkable, bikeable environment. The development continues, and affordable housing and trail connections are in the process of being added to the fabric of downtown. Where is Redding Cultural District located? The largest of the 14 districts, it stretches across the heart of downtown to Tiger Field at its southernmost tip, encompassing the Civic Center and Rodeo Grounds, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, the Sacramento River Trail, Caldwell and Lake Redding Parks on the northern edge. Those areas include sites of cultural and historical significance to the Indigenous community, Asian and African American communities, as well as other past and present community groups. What are the attractions of the district? Redding is fortunate to be able to offer a little bit of everything, from fine dining to shopping, history, art and entertainment and even a smattering of the outdoors. With Redding’s beautiful weather, visitors can walk, bike or borrow a scooter and explore the district. Improvements to the biking infrastructure will make car alternatives more accessible to many. Redding Cultural District is also

32

quite affordable, including free admission to some of the art exhibitions or free musical performances – there are also quite a lot of public art pieces to enjoy while enjoying a stroll, as more than 70 art installations await discovery throughout the area. Since the designation, more art pieces found home within the district boundaries. Home to some of Redding’s key performance venues, including the Civic Auditorium, Riverfront Playhouse, Cascade Theatre, Riverfront Park Amphitheater and Old City Hall, the district’s entertainment calendar is full yearround. Many local bars and restaurants host live music acts of national and international renown. Boutique stores offer products made by local artists and craftsmen as well as gourmet treats and local delicacies. Visitors can also comfortably enjoy a downtown experience while staying at one of the many hotels located within the district – from the luxurious four-star Sheraton Hotel to revitalized old-school motel gems, boutique hotels or bespoke guest houses. Want to get pampered? We’ve got you covered. Want to try out a new hobby? No problem – step this way to your next new adventure. The Redding Cultural District is people who care to keep making Redding a better place. It’s the vision and hard work of community members who devoted years to bring about the redevelopment, it’s the input of those who choose to start or move their businesses downtown, who support and invest in revitalization of historic buildings, who preserve the memories and traditions of the past and who animate the district through the cultural events they stage here. A cultural district has always existed in Redding. When will you visit? • Story By Agata Maruszewski

We train dancers of all ages and levels.” “When our students grow as artists and performers, I am inspired,” Christensen says. “Those of us who teach, encourage, train, motivate and inspire students see our ‘work’ as serving those who have a desire to flourish in their art.”• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

FACE of BEAUT Y Learning, leading, laughing, and loving; four of our favorite things to do at Disappearing Act! Learning: Our team constantly attends medical aesthetics conferences to keep up with the fast pace of medical aesthetics. There is always something to learn. The photos here are from this year’s journey to Las Vegas, where our entire team attended the Medical Spa Show. We always come home with more inspiration and knowledge, and this year was no exception! Leading: Our nurse leader, Julie Bass Kaplan spends half of her time teaching Medical Aesthetics practitioners how to inject safely and artistically. She is a world renowned educator and speaker, often on a flight to teach through Allergan or Palette Resources. We feel so fortunate to have her lead our team in this beautiful NorthState. She had a lot of fun with each of her podium talks in Las Vegas as well. We are very proud of her leadership and enthusiasm. Laughing: Anyone who has stepped into our office knows that there is often laughter echoing through the hallways at Disappearing Act. We each love our careers, and honestly when you love what you do it doesn’t really

Loving: Our team feels like family, and our patients feel like extended family and many have become close friends over the last 22 years. We definitely care about every single person who enters our building. We hope you feel that comfortable, loving & welcoming vibe when you visit us. • Visit them on enjoycityguide.com

Healthy living is all-encompassing. That’s why Dunamis Wellness helps take care of mind as well as body and soul. Since 2017, Dunamis Wellness has focused on creating “trauma-informed care to help individuals, families and couples learn to be healthy, whole, and live well.” Having grown up in the health/fitness industry, Jill Clark knew the joy of helping others reach their full potential. Yet, as she went to graduate school, she saw how little mental health was included in the overall health equation. And Clark knows Dunamis Wellness is just getting started. “Our heart is to see healing on a major scale for all individuals, children and families throughout Shasta County and beyond,” she says. “Helping clients find their own path forward in their lives – that’s something that has always inspired me. And this carries over into how Dunamis operates – we’re always looking for new and creative ways to help our clients. We know that one size does not fit all, so we’re constantly exploring and thinking outside of the box of typical mental health agencies.”• To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

It was important for Martino to keep Orchard a family-owned, community-oriented business. IF YOU BUILD IT

Market Center, in the heart of Downtown Redding, might not be K2 Development Companies’ first project, but it could be its most significant. The mixed-use development has completely transformed the look of downtown Redding with 82 high-end residential units above street-level restaurants and shopping – all steps from the renewal taking place. “Downtown is in the beginning stages of a total renaissance. Our cultural identity and place on the California map is being formed right before our eyes.” say Allen and Daniel Knott, owners of K2 Development Companies. With Market Center open for business, the focus now shifts beyond construction to finding the perfect mix of downtown restauranteurs, entrepreneurs,

and operators to enhance the amenities in Downtown Redding. “We are being intentional in our selection of great commercial tenants for our new downtown commercial spaces. We have hired top-tier consultants to ensure that the mix of businesses we are bringing into the downtown core will make downtown a hit with local residents and tourists,” the Knotts say. “We plan to contribute to the growth of downtown Redding for many years to come. For us, it is not about filling space. It is essential to find commercial operators that share the same passion for breathing new life into Redding’s downtown.” • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com

Carmona’s Appliance Center has been a North State staple since 1949. Born in an age when products lasted seemingly forever and service was the cornerstone of every business, Carmona’s has lasted all these years because those traits never went out of style. And when Joe Heslin, Mario Callegari, Victoria Heslin and Jane Callegari bought the business in 2014, the mission was simple: “To carry on the Carmona’s tradition,” says Joe Heslin. Yes, Carmona’s Appliance Center carries the largest brand selection in the North State. Yes, Carmona’s pricing is competitive with big box retailers. Yes, their service – before and after the sale – is top-notch. All of which adds up to a must-visit to the Mistletoe Lane showroom, which is scheduled for a facelift to truly become state of the art. • To read more of the story, visit enjoycityguide.com
