Thank you to all who submitted to our Spring 2019 issue. There were no incorrect responses to our prompt because it was meant to be personal to each person. Many fantastic photos unfortunately could not be featured, our submission pool was quite impressive in its diversity of interpretations of our prompt. The call for submissions asked students to “take out your phone right now and send us 5 photos you already have on your phone.” This is unlike our themes in years past because it is not a specific aesthetic motif or concept, and more of a project on the photos we carry around with us every day. We made our submission criteria as approachable as possible to allow for a range of photo styles. Amateur photography deserves recognition and credibility. “Amateur” may feel belittling, but it has the capacity to be empowering in how it embraces lack of guidelines. Thus, smart phone photos are presented as equal to film and digital photography within the book. Any medium can hold a special moment or feeling that makes us keep it in our camera roll year after year, surviving each new phone back-up restore. There may not be reason to explain it, but these photos are important enough to go out of our way for. We wanted people to consider themselves and their photography from a spontaneous and emotional perspective. This project is not necessarily about the ‘best’ photography, but our favorite photos. It’s about those weird little moments that capture an authenticity that’s not always present in the highly polished photography we tend to expect. But, this project does still allow for the inclusion of fine art photography, holding a place in our hearts all the same. Flipping through this book should feel like scrolling through someone’s personal camera roll. There are photos of peoples’ pets, of late night excursions, alongside photos that look like they could have been screenshots from a film, and close-ups of the unrecognizable. Organizing this project has taught us how accessible photography can be, and that there is no shame in using the camera you have, and that the content of a photo can be more impactful than megapixels. We hope you walk away from this book with a new understanding of what makes a photograph valuable.
