by Joanna Nesbit Our region is in for a treat. On Sunday, April 14, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra is excited to bring us its first guitar soloist performance with international sensation Sharon Isbin at the Mount Baker Theatre at 3pm. And what an opportunity it is. Hailed as the “grand diva of guitar,” Isbin will perform Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto do Aranuez, his best-known concerto written for guitar and orchestra. The program also features Suite No. 1 from Bizet’s Carmen and Symphony No. 5 by Tchaikovsky.

Yaniv Attar is the fourth and last guest conductor of the WSO Music Director finalists.
At the conductor helm is Yaniv Attar, also an accomplished guitarist, and the fourth and final guest conductor of the WSO Music Director finalists. In the WSO’s search for a new Music Director to replace Roger Briggs, who stepped down in 2012 after 16 years as Artistic Director, it narrowed its field to four finalists. Three of them have already given conductor guest appearances. Maestro Attar is the last finalist to conduct. The concerts have been popular (get your tickets early), and the WSO expects to make its decision on its new Music Director by May 1. What makes this performance rather special is the professional connection between Isbin and Attar. “It is a wonderful serendipitous detail that Yaniv Attar has studied with Isbin at the Juilliard School of Music and acted as her teaching assistant at the Aspen Music Festival from 2003 to 2005,” says Judy Osmundson, WSO’s marketing director. “We expect audiences will be rewarded with the rapport that Isbin enjoys with her student.” It will be an afternoon not to be forgotten, she says. Acclaimed for her technique and versatility, Isbin has received multiple Grammy awards and has performed as a soloist with more than 160 orchestras, playing in venues as diverse as the White House, Ground Zero, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Boston’s Symphony Hall,
and others throughout the world. Born in Minneapolis, Isbin began studying guitar at age 9 in Italy. After graduating cum laude from Yale with a Master of Music degree, she went on to found the guitar department at New York’s Juilliard School and direct the guitar department at the Aspen Music Festival. Maestro Attar is a native of Israel, and studied in Jerusalem, the Juilliard School, and the Royal College of Music in London. He received his Doctor of Music from Montreal’s McGill University in 2008, and has guest conducted many performing ensembles around Europe and the U.S. He now serves as an assistant conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham. His own guitar studies began at age 10, and he went on to become an accomplished classical guitarist. The WSO concert wraps up the 2013 Northwest Guitar Festival hosted by WWU under the direction of David Feingold. The festival is a three-day event (April 12-14), and features performances by a variety of Northwest artists, as well as guitarist George Sakellariou and lutenist John Schneiderman. As part of the festival, Isbin will give a master class on Friday, April 12. For more information, call 650-3130. One hour prior to the WSO performance, Dr. Ed. Rutschman will present a pre-concert lecture in the MBT Encore room. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Festival registration is $120 or day passes are $55 (Friday and Saturday

The Return of the Beatles Sing-Along: Kulshan Chorus Takes the Mainstage by Michelle Wallace For 25 years, the Kulshan Chorus has been belting out powerful tunes around town and the world, celebrating diversity through the simple means of music. Founded in Bellingham by Roger Griffith, the all-ages singing group performs arrangements drawn from wide-ranging historical and world contexts. From gospel to pop favorites to tunes in Spanish, French or Polish, the common theme of the Kulshan Chorus is linking people through music they can all relate to – but most of all enjoy.
The Kulshan Chorus enthralled its audience at the first Beatles Sing-Along in spring 2011.
In celebration of its quarter-century milestone, the Kulshan Chorus presents the 2nd Great Beatles (and More!) Sing-Along on April 27 at 7:30pm on the WWU PAC Mainstage. Featuring Beatles favorites performed by the chorus and The Walrus, this musical shindig also highlights some favorite arrangements from the choir’s long history in honor of Roger Griffith’s retirement as Musical Director.

I spoke with Roger and Anne Griffith about their experience building the Kulshan Chorus over the years. As Roger recounted, “The chorus grew out of the idea that there’s a lot more music to sing in the world than that which is sung by classical groups [and more].” And while the influences for any given arrangement may be worlds apart, the driving force for each and every performance is exactly the same. This became clear as I listened to Anne describe the musical group’s history. “Bringing the music all over the world is...part of what we love to do,” Anne explained. Through the generosity of chorus member Charlie Walkinshaw of Experience International, the group has traveled to France, Switzerland, Romania and Ecuador. Roger described a moving evening in an Ecuadorian church. “There must have been a thousand people there, singing songs in Spanish... that they knew, and that they could sing with us.” While the chorus won’t be performing in Spanish on the 27th, rocking out to the Beatles is essentially the same in one key respect. As Roger put it, “The Beatles were certainly outside the box in everything they did.” With songs including “Imagine” and “Let It Be,” the chorus’ program focuses on the Beatles’ groundbreaking music as one tenet of human diversity. Plus, “It’s just one smash hit after another.” The upcoming Beatles show is a follow up to the choir’s first Great Beatles Sing-Along, which was performed and completely sold out two years ago. “There were people dancing everywhere and singing along,” Anne raved. Just as in that church in Ecuador, the performance invited the audience to become part of the performance – and they did. This time, the Kulshan Chorus will also be joined by The Walrus, with an appearance by Mark Kelly of the Saltwater Octet and Paul Klein of the Atlantics. Yep, this year’s sure to be a smash hit too. Entertainment News Northwest ~ April 2013

letting wonderful music just speak – or rather, sing – for itself. After all, celebrating diversity can simply mean creating an enjoyable and relatable experience for everyone in the audience. And there’s no doubt about it: the Kulshan Chorus is going to do just that on Saturday, April 27th. Join them for the 2nd Great Beatles (and more) Sing-Along! She has also worked on promotional writing for Allied Arts of Whatcom County and local composer/producer Curtis Cartier. Mount Baker Theatre presents Jesse Cook – Flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook will
perform on Thurs., April 11 at 7:30pm. Noted for his intriguing mix of world music, Latin rhythms, and both funky and smooth jazz, Jesse Cook’s artistic success can be measured by the seven albums he’s released in fifteen years. The guitarist’s wide range of musical tastes evolved from classical and jazz guitar studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston to immersion in the oral traditions of Gypsy guitar, a rhythmic, flamenco-rumba approach heard in the “Gypsy barrios” of France. Cook’s blend of musical genres appeals to a wide spectrum of music fans. In 2008 he achieved a historic first by dominating both the smooth jazz radio charts and the Billboard New Age chart, the first with his #3 single “Café Mocha” and the second with his #1 album “Frontiers.” His collaborations are equally diverse – he has contributed to Afro Celt Sound System’s album “Seed,” performed with soprano Charlotte Church, and toured with the Chieftains. In 2009 Acoustic Guitar magazine awarded Cook the silver Player’s Choice Award in flamenco, second to his hero, flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia. Like de Lucia, Cook continues to enthrall with his ground-breaking style and irresistible rhythms. Tickets are $45 / $39 / $29 / $20 + applicable fees. Student rush tickets are one 50% off ticket per valid ID an hour before the show. Info: 734-6080 or visit www.mountbakertheatre.com.

WWU Opera Studio presents Cinderella by Osa Hale The clock strikes midnight. The prince looks on as his mysterious dancing partner runs away, leaving behind a glass slipper. We all know what happens next. It is a classic and enchanting fairytale, and this month, Western Washington University’s Opera Studio will be captivating audiences with its beautiful rendition of the story.
The company rehearses the opera’s finale. (pictured in the foreground are Nathaniel Voth as the King, Kristen Swenson as the Fairy Godmother, Danielle Bayne as Prince Charming and Veronica Jensen as Cinderella).
Centered around the delightful music of Jules Massenee, the opera studio’s performance of Cinderella, or Cendrillon, will be combining the best of modern and classical elements. The opera will be performed in the original French, with English subtitles being projected, music director and show producer Jay Rozendaal says. The cast will also be wearing all contemporary attire. “You’ll see princesses in modern-day party dresses, princes in tuxedos, Cinderella keeping to herself in her everyday clothes and flats, like you might run into her on the street,” Rozendaal says. “Cinderella really could be the girl next door.” Rozendaal says this makes the opera less of a distant fairy tale and more accessible to audiences of all ages. The English subtitles help with this approachability of the show, allowing the performers to sing the beautiful original French lyrics, and the audience to enjoy the music. Attendees can especially look forward to the songs shared by the two leads, Rozendaal says. “The two duets between Cinderella and Prince Charming are, in my opinion, two of the most beautiful love songs in opera,” Rozendaal says. “And I’ve heard a lot of opera.” Following another classic opera tradition, both Cinderella and Prince Charming will both be played by talented actresses, keeping the duets incredibly
harmonious, Rozendaal says. Western senior Veronica Jensen will be singing and acting in the role of Cinderella. Jensen, who graced the stage in the opera studio’s renditions of Pirates of Penzance and Don Giovanni, participated in a French-American vocal academy over the summer. Western junior Danielle Bayne, who has also performed in the opera studio’s past two shows, will play her Prince Charming. She was a perfect fit for the role, Rozendaal says. As if a lush, talent-filled musical production were not enough, Cinderella also will have the audience chuckling with its wit. “It is humorous. It is also very romantic and extraordinarily beautiful,” Rozendaal says. Mount Baker Theatre presents Lord of the Dance More than 60 million people from 68 countries have seen Lord of the Dance. The show returns to visit 54 cities in North America and will perform at the Mount Baker Theater on Fri., April 5 at 8pm. Creator and Artistic Director Michael Flatley, who added fresh costumes, a visually stimulating set featuring an LED wall and revised lighting and set designs this year, still oversees all aspects of the production. Lord of the Dance is a classic tale of good versus evil based on mythical Irish folklore that brings a romantic and passionate love story to the stage. Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance. “Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm,” says Flatley. “Fans can expect 21 scenes of precision dancing, dramatic music, colorful wardrobes and state-of-the-art staging and lighting. Irish dance lovers and music fans alike will experience the engaging, rhythmic adventures that has helped catapult Celtic dance mania and Irish dancing into the global spotlight.” Described by the New York Post as “fascinating, rewarding and above all, entertaining,” and by the Los Angeles Times as “a showpiece extravaganza,” Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance. Tickets are $69 / $59 / $49 / $20 + applicable fees at 734-6080 or www.mountbakertheatre.com. (Student rush tickets are 50% off ticket price with valid ID an hour before the show.)

The atmosphere at the studio is electric.” The award will be presented on Wednesday, April 24, at 5:30pm at the new Pickford Film Center on Bay Street. “Knowing who some of the past recipients of this award have been, we couldn’t be more honored to be in such rare company,” said Artistic Director Bishop. “We’ve been working very hard the last few years to become one of the leading performing arts organizations in the Northwest and I think we may have arrived.”

World Book Night April 23 –
Bellingham Public Library and the Whatcom County Library System are spreading the love of reading, person to person, by participating in World Book Night festivities in April. The libraries will serve as book delivery sites for book giver volunteers who will be handing out free books on World Book Night, which will be held Tues., April 23. Each volunteer will receive 20 copies of a specially-printed, not-for-resale World Book Night U.S. edition of a book they have read and loved, chosen from a list of 30 titles selected by a panel of librarians and booksellers. How they distribute them is their choice – but the books must be given away to those who don’t regularly read, and who may have never owned a book of their own. Book givers applied online and were notified of their acceptance at the end of February. Each giver selected a pickup location for their books. Bellingham Public Library and all nine Whatcom County Library System branch libraries are designated pickup spots. Libraries will be hosting small receptions for book givers to pick up their books the week prior to World Book Night. Info, visit www.us.worldbooknight.org/ or www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org or www.wcls.org.

Between traditional, small, independent, & digital publishing, the best course for your book can get lost in pros and cons. “Selfpublishing” is no longer a realistically accurate term. Authors who choose this route don’t go it alone; they collaborate with a community of professionals to assist them on their way and develop their book project. Village Books’ Paul Hanson and Brendan Clark will provide insights into the publishing / bookselling industry, discuss the advantages and challenges of multiple publishing paths, and present the various services that Village Books provides indie-published authors. Food and beverages will be available to purchase. Seating is limited. We advise making your reservation on-line to guarantee a seat. More info: 714-8901, or visit www.WhatcomWritersAndPublishers.org.

Springtime for Skagit — TAG does The Producers by Christopher Key It’s been described as a show with something to offend everyone. When the thoroughly disrespectful Mel Brooks unleashed his 1968 film The Producers on the world, there was a storm of protest from Jews, homosexuals, elderly women, Holocaust survivors, World War II veterans and the entire population of Germany. Time has healed some of the wounds and the show’s iconic “Springtime for Hitler” is now considered a musical theatre classic. Theater Arts Guild Director Trey Hatch has been doing theatre for most of his life, perhaps most notably with Shakespeare Northwest. He prepared for the irreverence of The Producers by portraying Edna Turnblad in TAG’s production of Hairspray. “When TAG called and asked me if I would be interested in directing The Producers, I was crushed,” Hatch said. “I had set my sights on auditioning and felt that, while directing would be challenging
and fun, I knew I would be crazy to undertake such an ambitious project and act in it as well.” Hatch’s sanity, or lack thereof, has never been in doubt and he will be playing the role of Roger DeBris in addition to directing.
Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Mike Jenkins) realizes his timid sidekick Leo Bloom (Jeff Bradley) might have come up with a brilliant scheme!
Leo Bloom doesn’t quite know how to respond to the romantic overtures of the beautiful and sexy Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson (played by Rebecca Launius-Brown)
“Excellent comedy is timeless,” Hatch said. “I feel a great attitude of respect to Mel Brooks for having the courage to poke fun at a period of history (WWII) and a person (Hitler) that were very damaging to his own people. Mel’s got chutzpah! I do feel that it is easier now to produce such a play, but only because Mel gave us permission first.” Then, there is that huge production number, “Springtime for Hitler,” that Hatch refers to as “The Beast Mother of all showstoppers.”
“We actually started our rehearsal process learning this number’s music and dance in sections (four different parts) backwards and forwards,” he said. “Once the parts were all learned, we integrated them into a cohesive single unit for the 13 weeks we have had rehearsing. The highest compliment that can be paid to anyone in this show is how easy and effortless it will all look once we are performing it. The strangest thing I think I have ever said in a rehearsal, is, ‘O.K., now let’s get into our dancing Swastika!’” Given the size and complexity of The Producers, Hatch recruited an all-star crew to pull it all together. “Lauren Hedlin, my stage manager, is both stern and tactful and knows what I need almost before I do,” Hatch said. “Tim Brown is designing and helping build my set. Lynette McCormack, vocal director, is very meticulous and working everybody very hard to reach their full potential. Dave Cross, orchestral director, is a perfectionist and one of the nicest guys around. Rebecca Launius Brown and Christopher Touhy are my aces in the hole. Rebecca has worked as a dancer professionally and Chris has a degree in dance from Juilliard. Cally Holden, our lead costumer, is working hard to make everyone look smashing.” The Producers performs April 6–20 at Mount Vernon’s snazzy McIntyre Hall. Consult the Theater Arts Guild website, http://www.theaterartsguild.org/ for precise dates and times. Tickets are $10 to $40 and available by calling the McIntyre box office at (360) 416-7727 or order online at www.mcintyrehall.org. Check your sensibilities at the door. Aquila Theatre breathes fresh life into one of Shakespeare’s most challenging comedies. Aquila has won popular, critical, and academic acclaim worldwide, performing in places as diverse as Carnegie Hall, the Ancient Stadium at Delphi, and the White House. Set in the idyllic town of Padua, “The Taming of the Shrew” tells the story of the timeless battle of the sexes. Lord Minola declares that his beautiful younger daughter, Bianca, cannot be courted until her older sister, Katherina, is wed. Katherina’s quick temper and acerbic wit frighten off potential suitors, who resort to hiring a newcomer to seduce and “tame” her. The story, with its domestic power plays and controversial depiction of marriage, has been adapted numerous times for stage, screen, opera, and musical theatre, perhaps the most famous being the film “10 Things I Hate About You” and Cole Porter’s Tonywinning musical “Kiss Me, Kate.” Tickets are $42 / $32 / $25 / $20 + applicable fees. At 11:30am, volunteers, state and local officials, the Lummi Nation, the Nooksack Indian Tribe, landowners, interested community members, and other CREP partners will gather for the one millionth CREP tree ceremony. Following light refreshments and a short presentation, the landmark tree, a Western red cedar, will be planted. Just Another Pretty Face by Christopher Key If you want to become an international superstar and you’re a guy, it helps to have the face of Brad Pitt or the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The rest of us, like a certain bulldog named Gabe, have to fall back on our talent. Gabe has a lot to fall back on. I recently caught Gabe’s act at Merrill Gardens, where he wowed a crowd of seniors and a few grandkids. The stocky six-year-old is a polished performer who has appeared on David Letterman, America’s Got Talent and even starred in his own movie, The Dogfather. In addition, he has a list of awards from various canine competitions that must require a separate room in breeder/ trainer Cheryl Knapp’s house. Most dogs can be trained to fetch, but how many can retrieve a single dumbbell with his trainer’s scent from among a group of eight scattered about? Gabe makes it look easy. He can also ride a skateboard with aplomb, then grab the board in his rather impressive jaws and bring it back. He can occasionally outsmart his trainer. Knapp recruited a young lady from the audience to lie down on the floor so that Gabe could demonstrate his jumping abilities. To the delight of the crowd, Gabe simply ran around the obstacle rather than jumping over. The most efficient way to get from point A to point B is not always a straight line. With some encouragement from Knapp, Gabe eventually accomplished the jump, but his expression made it obvious that he thought humans rather inefficient. Gabe is also close to achieving his certification as a therapy dog and his willingness to greet his audience made it obvious that, despite his stardom, he has not forgotten who got him there. Check this local superstar out on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=-tcJws5xM8s or on his own site http://gaberocks.com/. Christopher Key is an actor and director who lives in Bellingham and writes to help support his theatrical addiction.

Allied Arts Presents Second Annual RARE by Meghan Thompson What do you get when you combine an old chair leg, packing foam, mattress springs, and a scrap of cloth? Well, that all depends on the artist! This spring marks the second annual Recycled Arts Resource Expo, or RARE, presented by Allied Arts of Whatcom County. An event open to creative minds of all ages, RARE challenges its participants to unleash their innermost creative juices and construct unique one-of-a-kind pieces using only recycled or reused items. This two-day, free event takes place in beautiful downtown Bellingham on Saturday, April 20 (10:00 am - 5:30 pm) & Sunday, April 21 (11:00 am - 3:00 pm). The hub of the event is in the historic Federal Building, an amazing facility owned by the City of Bellingham and overseen by the Public Development Authority. This year’s expo includes 45 unique events and exhibits, ranging from the astounding toaster art creations of Eric
Brown, to a community weaving project utilizing strips of old tee-shirts being led by Carol Berry, life-sized floating figures made of chicken wire, and coffee can clocks. No matter the medium or artist’s background though, the common trait throughout the expo is that all works have been created with found or repurposed materials. ‘RARE’ found object sculpture by Thor Myhre.
