Tulip Festival Includes

Art in a Pickle Barn

by Stephanie Dethlefs For 25 years, the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has included an art exhibit showcasing local artists’ work. Once again, Art in a Pickle Barn will be on display throughout the month of April as part of the countywide celebration of spring. Art in a Pickle Barn is one of the largest and longest-running art shows in the area. Skagit Valley Art Association’s premier show was first held in 1989 in a barn used only during cucumber harvesting season. Though the location of the show has changed several times, the years of being surrounded by pickle barrels led the Association to keep the name the same. Since 2011, Art in a Pickle Barn has been hosted by Azusa Farm and Garden where visitors are invited to peruse both the art and the beautiful gardens. 27 local artists are participating in this year’s event. The Skagit Art Association was founded in 1956. Each year, the Art in a Pickle Barn strives to offer quality local art to visitors. Visitors will see a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional

art in oils, watercolors, photography, jewelry, glass and woodwork, and much more. Artwork available for purchase includes something for every budget, including original wall art and prints on postcards. Artists will be on hand to talk with visitors about their work and offer live demonstrations. The show also raises funds through donations and a portion of sales go to provide a scholarship for an outstanding artist at Skagit Valley College. Art in a Pickle Barn can be found at Azusa Farm and Gardens located at 14904 State Route 20, Mount Vernon, WA. Show hours are daily from Saturday, March 29 through April 30, 10am-6pm. colored tulips, daffodils and other crops are spread across Skagit County, providing guests with an opportunity to visit a variety of farms. At RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, where millions of bulbs are planted, photo ops abound and bulbs and flowers are available for purchase. Additional crops are rotated annually, so a map is necessary to see the fields of blooms. Like Art in a Pickle Barn, there are many other activities and events for people of all ages to enjoy during the Tulip Festival. In Anacortes, the Arts Festival runs April 4-12, the Quilt Walk runs throughout April, and the Spring Wine Festival takes place April 12. La Conner opens their streets to the Country Tulip Frolic on April 12, including entertainment, exhibits and more. And Mount Vernon hosts the Annual Street

Recycled Art and Resource Expo: A RARE Event by Stephanie Dethlefs Think all recyclables go in those blue, red and white bins? Think again! Dozens of regional artists have put their imaginations and resourcefulness into creations for the 3rd Annual Recycled Art and Resource Expo (RARE), which kicks off on April 4. With sustainability at the heart of many Bellingham programs, it is no surprise that RARE collaborating organization The RE Store began the Recycled Art Exhibit 13 years ago. This is the third time the exhibit has been expanded to include classes and performances. “Our objectives for this event were to explore and educate the community and region regarding the role the arts can play in the recycling, reuse, renewable energy, and the sustainability movement,” explains Kelly Hart, Executive Director of Allied Arts of Whatcom County, the organization behind the Expo. Last year’s event brought in over 500 participants of all ages. RARE is a festival celebrating creative reuse in the arts and other industries. The

exhibit of art from recycled materials will be on display at the Allied Arts Gallery through the month of April, beginning with the First Friday Art Walk on April 4. For the entire month of April, the Family Interactive Gallery at Lightcatcher Museum will provide recycled art activities. Community members are also invited to tour the sustainably built and maintained Lightcatcher Building on Sunday, April 6 at 2pm. The workshops will offer an opportunity for hands-on creation of artwork from recycled materials for kids and adults. The presentations will offer tips, techniques and inspiration for creating functional art from recycled materials. Northwest Recycling is the corporate sponsor of RARE 2014. Lockerbie Agonistes — Fuller Directs Powerful Drama by Christopher Key A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie, Scotland, looking for her son’s remains, which were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. She meets The Women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the US government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane’s wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim’s families. Legendary local director Shawn Fuller will direct the presentation of Deborah Brevoort’s script opening April 11 at the

It is much more important that the women are understood. We’ve had two wonderful women helping us with our accents. Connie Bauer, a dialect coach, and Eileen Squires, a local woman who grew up in Scotland – she tells great stories! Both of these ladies have been very patient with our many questions.” Playwright Brevoort deliberately wrote in the style of a Greek tragedy. She includes the following note at the

beginning of her script: “There was something about the scale of the horror that was unleashed on Lockerbie, Scotland, the size of the emotions experienced by the victim’s families and the heroic scope of the laundry project that said ‘Greek’ to me.” Dramas often do not draw audiences the way musicals and comedies do, but Fuller has been more successful than most. “I love drama, especially plays that take you on an emotional journey, one that allows you to weep and laugh and finally to hope,” she said. “It is a journey that can cleanse pain, at least for a moment. It’s art at its best, touching the human core allowing connection through a shared experience.” Staging the production is not a huge challenge, but the BTG techies know that simplicity can be powerful. “Technically, this is a fairly simple show,” Fuller said. “It can be done on a bare stage. We’re adding a few beautiful lighting effects created by Ryan Goelzenleuchter and DeeDee O’Connor. The stage environment is being created by Russ Nelson and painted by Heather Dyer, and our costumes are designed by Marie Wildfield.” Nicole Winkler, Alan Peet, Joan Prinz, Ben Perry and Sarah Mickelson portray the five main characters in the play. The Women of Lockerbie performs April 11-27 at the Bellingham Theatre Guild Playhouse, 1600 H Street. Reservations are highly recommended and may be made by calling the box office at 360-733-1811. The Great Mystery: The Team Problem Solving Adventure The Great Mystery is back for a fourth year of riddles, quandaries, and adventure! This unique, month-long puzzle engages players in weekly conundrums from April 15 to May 6, 2014, and resembles a citywide scavenger hunt that engages your team’s creativity and intellect. Like Ski to Sea, players must collaborate with their teams, work up a “brain sweat” to solve “un-Googleable” clues, and race other teams to be the first to claim each weekly prize! Here’s how it works: Each team gets mailed a weekly clue. When the team solves the first puzzle, it leads them to another clue. Solving that puzzle leads to the next clue, and so forth. All clues are derived from Bellingham’s history and landscape, and are distributed in public places around town. The team that solves the weekly puzzle first wins cool prizes, and after four weeks, the Culminating Mystery is solved using info collected during each of the four Weekly Mysteries. Participation costs only $50 per team for four weeks of fun and adventure. “The Great Mystery is unlike any other fundraiser,” said self-appointed Mystery Master, Daniel Kirkpatrick. “It brings families and groups of friends together to explore our town, think outside the box, collaborate, have fun, and learn something new – it’s very aligned with Explorations Academy’s vision and philosophy.” Teams can register for either a Family or Super Sleuth game level, both of which offer weekly prizes and a Culminating Prize. The Neighborhood Playhouse presents Go, Dog. Go! by Joanna Nesbit In signature kid-friendly style, The Neighborhood Playhouse (TNP) presents P.D. Eastman’s classic children’s book Go, Dog. Go! as a riot of movement, music, and color. The all-ages production performs at the Firehouse Performing Arts Theatre in Fairhaven on the first two weekends in May. TNP Artistic Director Lizanne Schader and choreographer Stephanie Harper co-direct the adaptation as a series of vignettes, in keeping with the book’s style, to create a visual feast of doggy fun. With just 75 words in both the book and the play, the emphasis is on “action, music, and shenanigans,” says Schader. TNP strives to present engaging relationships in its productions for children. “In this piece, the humorous connections between characters present themselves in the physicality of the relationships—something young children can relate to without any words at all,” says Schader. Cast members are Will Johnson, Morgan Lanza, and Alex Gardipe, returning actors from other TNP shows, and new-to-TNP Jenny Woods, Rebecca Riopelle, and Cassandra Leon. 11th Annual Procession of the Species by Joanna Nesbit Get your groovy on—it’ll soon be time for the 11th Annual Procession of the Species Parade, an all-ages celebration of community and nature. The Monkey Puzzle Orchestra will grand marshal this year’s Procession, to be held on Saturday, May 3. The parade line-up begins at 3:30pm on Lottie St. in front of Bellingham City Hall and ends at Maritime Heritage Park with a marimba band. It’s free; no need to register in advance. Bellingham’s parade was inspired by the original Olympia parade, first held in 1995 in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Earth Day and to support Congressional renewal of the Endangered Species Act. The parade is built on three simple principles: no words (written or spoken), no live animals, and no motorized vehicles. A public workshop for costume and mask making will be hosted by Allied Arts of Whatcom County at Ragfinery, 1421 N. Forest St., on Saturday, April 5, 11am-3pm. Ragfinery is a new Bellingham non-profit venture—the first of its kind—whose mission is to create a reuse/upcycle model for discarded textiles by working with local artisans to create upcycled products. Musical Midsummer at WWU — Britten’s Opera Honors Centennial by Christopher Key This seems to be the year for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Both Northwest Ballet Theater and Free Key Productions have scheduled versions for the summer. Western Washington University has stolen a march on both of them by debuting theirs in mid-spring. and since none of the individual roles are exceedingly long it makes it a great work for young singers.” Director Amber Bone added that it was fun having young people in an opera about young people being young people. “It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with the theater and dance areas in the college, and it’s an exciting and challenging work for the orchestra,” Rozendaal said. “It’s a great piece of literature and drama as well, which gives our singers a wonderful opportunity to stretch their acting chops.” Bone points out that the production is not without its challenges. “It is quite complex,” she said. “There are a lot of bodies to dress, and a lot of props to track, and of course lighting a forest at night...that’s a challenge we haven’t gotten to yet! And the music is very tricky to learn. Our students have worked hard at it since October and are doing an admirable job with Britten’s intricate and beautiful score.” The design concept was influenced by the aforementioned Britten centennial. “Since he was born in 1913 we have set the production at that time, allowing us to draw in visual influences from Art Nouveau, and artists like Alphonse Mucha and Arthur Rackham,” Rozendaal said. “The setting is an English country estate, with its forest and grounds. We are very

fortunate to have the College of Fine and Performing Art’s new professor, Dipu Gupta, designing the sets.” Another challenge is finding a countertenor to play Oberon. “For our Oberon we are bringing back one of our alumni,” Rozendaal said. “Brendan Littlefield graduated last year with a degree in composition and four years of voice study. He was a student of mine, and only in his last quarter he asked to explore his countertenor ability. We discovered that he has a very beautiful countertenor sound.” Penny Hutchison from the Department of Theatre and Dance will choreograph. “This is the first time we have had the opportunity to have her working with dance students in an opera and ... with singers of varying abilities,” Rozendaal said. “Since we have fairies who are not all light and gossamer, Penny had movement auditions for both singers and dancers.” Rozendaal thinks the show is a blending of two masterpieces. “Britten (along with Peter Pears) reshaped Shakespeare’s story, making some cuts, and re-ordering scenes, in such a way that we see the fairy kingdom as the driving force behind the story,” he said. A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs April 18, 19, 25, 26 at 7:30pm and the 27th at 2pm at the WWU Performing Arts Center Mainstage. The Wailin’ Jennys Come to the Lincoln Theatre by Osa Hale When the Lincoln Theatre announced the return of the truly tremendous trio of ladies that are known collectively as The Wailin’ Jennys, the response was so overwhelming that the venue added a second show. For those who have witnessed the musical magic of The Jennys in the past, this should come as no surprise. For the uninitiated, this is just one reason to try to snag a ticket to the show. The Wailin’ Jennys are, individually, Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta, and Heather Masse. Each an acclaimed singersongwriter in her own right, the three women combine to create enchanting harmonies. The Jennys have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s beloved radio show A Prairie Home Companion, where they have performed many songs, including their own arrangement of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips,” which they originally prepared for the 2008 Tulip Festival performance at the Lincoln Theatre, says Jamie Weber, friend of The Jennys. “The band learned and arranged their own version of ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’ in their van on the way from Wenatchee to Mount Vernon,” Weber explains. “They performed it for the first time that same night and the song was such a hit that they went on to perform it on A Prairie Home Companion for a radio audience of four million.” Formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, The Wailin’ Jennys have delighted audiences across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. They have been honored with Juno Awards (recognized as the Canadian equivalent to the Grammys) and continue to bring in larger and larger audiences. “Almost everyone who has seen them perform returns for another show, and brings their family, friends, and neighbors as well,” Weber says. The distinctive harmony of their three voices, described by many as “lush” and “spine-tingling,” is the base of their sound and appeal, Weber explains. On top of that, the band has thoughtprovoking lyrics and an engaging stage presence that begins the moment they start to sing and continues even after the show, as they stay to meet and chat with audience members.

Another important element of appeal of The Wailin’ Jennys is what Weber calls their instrumental versatility. Though known for their acoustic talent, each member of the band plays a variety of instruments. Ruth Moody, soprano, plays the piano, guitar, accordion, banjo and bodhrán, and has a burgeoning solo career in addition to her work with The Jennys. cannot be contained in one genre or niche. “Although broadly classified as folk/ roots music, The Jennys incorporate a broad range of influences, from Celtic, country, and bluegrass, to jazz and gospel, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the three members,” Weber says. This will be the third time The Wailin’ Jennys have played at the Lincoln Theatre, and their first return to the Pacific Northwest since 2010. The feedback has been overwhelming; even the theater staff are thrilled for their return. “Their concerts are spirited and the performers are a joy to work with,” says Roger Gietzen, operations and production manager for the Lincoln Theatre. The shows will be Saturday, April 12 at 7:30pm and Sunday, April 13 at 3pm. Both shows are all-ages, and the tickets will range from $22 to $42 (depending on seating). Pickett House Tours – Nestled at the

edge of the Lettered Streets Neighborhood and Old Town is the Pickett House. It is the oldest house in Washington State still in its original location. The house was built for Captain George Pickett (1856), who went on to become the infamous Confederate General of “Pickett’s Charge” at Gettysburg during the Civil War.
