Mayor’s Arts Awards Celebration by Nancy Canyon You’re cordially invited to the Mayor’s Arts Awards celebration, Wednesday, April 29 from 5:30-7pm. Don dressy attire and head to the Walton Theatre at the Mount Baker Theatre to honor eight local artists, individuals and businesses. At this classy celebration, complete with hors d’oeuvres and beverages, folks who’ve demonstrated selflessness and commitment to making life better for the community of Bellingham will be honored for their contribution and presented a vessel crafted by local ceramic artist, Cary Lane. Mayor Kelli Linville, along with the Bellingham City Council and the Arts Commission, will present The Mayor’s Arts Award to the Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival, Karen Berry, Jeni Cottrell, Brian Griffin, iDiOM Theatre: These Seven Sicknesses, Shelley and Robert Muzzy, The Mountain Runners, Entertainment News NW, Sibyl Sanford, and Ivan Owen. Awardee Ivan Owen is a Mechanical Special Effects artist. Ivan invented an affordable prosthetic hand for adults and children with damaged hands. He was playing around with a giant puppet hand one day... which lead to a relatively inexpensive prosthetic hand designed on a 3D printer. In a TEDx Rainier Talk (http://www.tedxrainier.com/ speakers/ivan-owen) he explains how a man in South Africa heard about his invention. Through modern technology, they were able to work across thousands of miles to fit the gentleman with a new hand. The story gets better: he proceeded to make a hand for a little boy living in South Africa, also born without fingers. Now the boy’s family can easily afford larger prosthetics as the boy grows. Award winner Karen Berry features young musicians at “Welcome Home Recitals”; Brian Griffin is a talented woodcarver, painter and musician; and Jeni Cottrell works behind the scenes promoting group art purchases for non-profits such as Northwest Youth Services and Dorothy Place. us with theatre and belly dance. The Mountain Runners, directed by Todd Warger and Brian Young, has been nominated for two Emmys. iDiOM Theatre provides space for actors, writers, and directors to hone their craft. Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival

(BHRFF) has shown over 250 films since the festival’s inception in 2000. Bellingham practically vibrates with a rich and energetic art scene, but we might not know we can participate in the nomination process. Trish Harding (former winner: Trish Harding School of Art, for PAPO, Plein Air Paint Out) bubbles over when talking about the Mayor’s Award. “Many folks don’t know that they can nominate an individual. They can even self-nominate…of course the person needs to be publicly nominated as well.” Trish describes the criteria as being uniquely Bellingham, showing continued success, being connected to the local arts community, promoting tourism and culturalism, fostering education, and being strong nomination material. “We all know someone like this. And it’s easy to nominate.” If you’d like to nominate an individual or group residing within the city limits of Bellingham, please go to www.cob.org/ services/arts/mayoraward.aspx and click on the nomination form between now and the end of the 2015. Be sure to talk to your nominee about the honor in advance, as it is important that they are available to receive recognition. For now, go to your closet and select something dressy to wear to the awards ceremony. Then together (everyone is welcome), we’ll celebrate these amazing folks at the Walton Theatre, April 29 at 5:30pm.

Dawson (pictured far right) traveled from Oregon to Ivan & Jennifer Owen’s home where Ivan taught him and his family how to assemble the hand so that he could be part of creating his own device. When they got home, his Mom immediately started a fundraiser to help purchase a 3D printer for Dawson’s school where he will now be able to print out his new hands as he grows. Other students will also learn how to use 3D printers to make a difference in the world. They plan to start having Dawson teach other kids how to assemble e-NABLE hands too. Ben helped to make his own hand and this photo is the very moment he really took it in that he now has 10 full fingers for the first time in his life… You can just see him really thinking about it. ‘Is this real?’” – Jennifer Owen. A few of the students in the class came in during breaks and spent time after school and even came in over a weekend to size it, tweak it and print it out so that Ivan and Jennifer could take it with them to an event in Dallas where Ivan taught Hudson and his family how to assemble the hand themselves. WWU Music Awards – The Bellingham

Music Club will present the student winners of its WWU Awards at 10:30am on Wed., April 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church (119 Texas Street). The performers will be David Hoogkamer on alto sax; Hannah La Gassey on viola; and baritone Nathaniel Voth. They are winners of the 2015 Virginia Glover WWU Music Awards. Hoogkamer will take you to the opera. La Gassey will perform Bach and Bartok. Voth will sing in German, Italian, Spanish and English. Scarlet Locomotive & Wild Rabbit – The Scarlet Locomotive runs out of Bellingham, Washington to parts unknown. The band is powered by fiddle, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and the shared vocals of Arielle Luckmann and Ted O’Connell. Call it Americana or Story Music, this duo thrives on songwriting. Wild Rabbit (formerly known as Br’er Rabbit) features a style they call folkstomp Americana. Bernard Fairhaven’s colorful past comes to life as this charming Victorian village celebrates its infamous founding father, the “unscrubbed” Dirty Dan Harris, on Sunday, April 26, from 10am to 6pm. Fifteen vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to unique street food will adorn the Fairhaven Village Green, as live music entertains the crowd in this family-friendly festival. The Historic Fairhaven Association produces the all-day celebration. This year’s presenting sponsor is Ben Kinney and Keller Williams Realty. Events include: 10am – International Dan Harris Challenge Rowing Race at Boulevard Park. Replicating Dan Harris’ cross-border whisky smuggling adventures. The clam chowder was in honor of the legendary story about Dirty Dan: He went to Olympia, and somebody presented him with two pigs. When he got back to Bellingham, he turned them out to fend for themselves. They both got fat, to Dan’s surprise. He followed them to the tide flats and found them digging clams in the receding tide. He would take one clam for every two that they dug, never taking more than he could eat between tides, according to a 1917 book by Herbert Hunt. Dirty Dan later said that “when the tide went out, the table was set.” 2-5pm – KAFE Radio will broadcast from the festival. Dirty Dan himself will be there, as if back from the grave, in his usual attire (dirt-caked coat, a felt hat that Jed Clampett might have thrown away, no socks and unlaced boots, and a glorious

The streets will be populated with 1880s characters, thanks to the legendary Dirty Dan Look-Alike and 1880s Dress Contests, joined by some of the Ladies of the Evening that enhance the Fairhaven sidewalks, in full costume, each summer. These are Fairhaven businesswomen, clad in satin and silk, in homage to the 40 bordellos in Fairhaven in the 1890s. Since Dirty Dan Harris platted the town, thereby creating Fairhaven in 1883, it’s a historical, and colorful, tribute. Signups for the fish toss, donut hole contest, and costume contests occur the day of the event, at the stage – first come, first served. Restaurants must register in advance for the Chili Cook-Off, and piano racers must also register in advance. Come one, come all, to the Village Green. Men, women, children and dogs are all welcome. Celebrate Nature & Community at the Procession of the Species by Osa Hale Fur and feathers, scales and fangs, all in a blur of color and a wild cacophony of voices and music... No, this is not a lively trip to the zoo. It is the Procession of the Species, a beloved Bellingham springtime tradition. Now in its twelfth year in Bellingham, the Procession of the Species was actually born in Olympia in 1995 as a way to celebrate Earth Day, and has continued to grow. By the time it migrated over to the City of Subdued Excitement in 2003, the procession had evolved into a parade that celebrates the natural world, the local community, and the power of art to bring the two together. Inspired by creatures big and small, local people assemble costumes that range from simple outfits to elaborate structural masterpieces, transforming themselves into birds, flowers, salmon, bears, trees, deer, turtles, and everything in between. Although some participants build their costumes at home, much of the creative magic happens at the Environmental Learning Center in a whirlwind of art supplies and recycled materials. Workshops are held and individual projects are launched, all building to the big day. Carol Oberton will be leading a workshop on Sat., April 4, 10:30am12:30pm at 5044 Mt. Baker Highway in Deming. You will find creative uses for materials, see examples for building your own big puppets, and learn to make masks and accessories. Participants are encouraged to bring old sweatshirts,

When it is time to present the procession, there are three simple rules the menagerie must abide by: no live animals or pets, no written or spoken words, and no motorized vehicles (motorized wheelchairs and mobility devices are an exception to the rule). Beyond those rules, the Procession of the Species is free to develop naturally, creating a wild energy that makes each year a unique spectacle, one that invites observers to join in the fun as much as it creates a scene. The 12th annual Procession of the Species will be taking place on Saturday, May 2. Participants will gather behind the downtown Bellingham Public Library on Lottie Street at 3:30pm. The parade will proceed south on N. Commercial St., turning northwest onto W. Holly St., and end at a celebration in Maritime Heritage Park. There will be activities, music, and a chance to mingle up close and personal with the wildlife. Fifteen crossing guard volunteers are needed during the event. Ragfinery Celebrates Anniversary with Wedding Dress Upcycle Challenge

by Joanna Nesbit Summer may be the season for weddings, but April is the month for transforming a wedding dress. Ragfinery, Bellingham’s one-of-a-kind textile reuse center, is holding its second annual upcycle challenge, The Wedding Dress Challenge. The competition has already begun, but it’s not too late to join in – the deadline for completed projects is April 25. The challenge is to turn an old wedding dress (available at Ragfinery) into creative accessories, clothing, or anything else you dream up. The goal? To bring attention to the issue of reducing fiber in the waste stream, to create awareness about repurposing, to bring people into Ragfinery to see what it’s all about, and to create community excitement and fun. The challenge will culminate in a “Red Carpet Show-Off” event at the center’s location, 1421 Forest St., on Friday, May 1, 7pm. The event simultaneously celebrates Ragfinery’s one-year anniversary. The competition costs $20 and includes a wedding dress from the store. Participants can download a registration form from the website (www.ragfinery.com), where you’ll also find the event schedule and project guidelines.
