The Mother of All Garage Sales is Coming! by Meghan Thompson This August marks the 15th annual Mother of All Garage Sales. Often considered the largest sale in Whatcom County, all proceeds go to benefit Lydia Place, which assists women and children in their transition from homelessness to independence. With the help of volunteers and donations from throughout the community, thousands of items, including home furnishings, exercise equipment, toys and lightly-used clothes, are collected and will be available Saturday and Sunday, August 10th and 11th.

This year’s sale is being held at Bellingham’s Sportsplex from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. A “pre-sale” will be offered from 8-9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, for a $15 entry fee; otherwise, the sale is free to all, and all items will be priced at 1/2 off on Sunday! The Sportsplex is located at 1225 Civic Field Way, across the street from Civic Field and Joe Martin Field. The garage sale is an important fundraiser for Lydia Place, a non-profit working to end homelessness in Whatcom County. Founded in 1989, and serving over 150 households every year, Lydia Place provides housing, supportive services, advocacy, and education to homeless families in our community, as well as more than 5,500 beds/nights of safe shelter annually to women and children within the community. Last year’s sale brought in over $13,000, and the fundraising goal for 2013 has been set at $18,000! Some of the great sponsors for this year’s sale, without whose support this event wouldn’t be possible, are Northwest Propane, Northwest Recycling Inc, Sanitary Service Company, Recycling

& Disposal Services Inc, Minuteman Press, Bellingham Sportsplex, Cintas, and Chazzam Signs & Graphics, as well as the 2013 vendors, Street Dogz and Ohhh Deery’s Ice Cream Truck. The event itself runs on volunteer power, and takes hundreds of volunteer hours to organize, receive, sort, price, set-up, and take-down. To volunteer or for more information about Lydia Place, contact Janet via phone at 360-671-7663 or email at janetw@lydiaplace.org or visit the website at www.lydiaplace.org.
Coco Montoya returns to the Lincoln Aug. 23 The Lincoln Theatre and the Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts present blues great Coco Montoya on Fri., Aug. 23 at 7:30pm. Tickets range from $20 to $30 and are available at the Lincoln Theatre website at www.lincolntheatre.org and at the box office weekdays noon-5pm (360-336 8955). Long ago, legendary blues man Albert Collins took a young Coco Montoya aside and told him, “Son, just play what’s in your heart.” That has been Coco’s mantra as he’s toured the world cultivating fans with his intense music and warm personality. Mentored by Albert Collins, Coco went on to become the guitarist for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers for ten years before leading his own band. A self-taught guitar slinger who plays with an emotional intensity few string benders possess, he plays left-handed and upside down in the style of Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. This concert marks the first collaborative presentation of a concert between The Lincoln Theatre and the Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts who have complimentary missions. The Lincoln Theatre is committed to entertain, inform, and inspire our diverse community through cinema, live performance and educational programs while preserving the historic Lincoln Theatre. The Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts was founded to provide support for the arts in Skagit Valley by promoting and encouraging live performances and raising money to provide grants to artists and arts organizations. For more info, check out the websites at www.rickeptingfoundation.org and www.lincolntheatre.org. The Lincoln Theatre is located at 712 South First St. in Mount Vernon.

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra’s Historic New Season

by Michelle Wallace Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is now selling tickets for its 2013-2014 season. And this season isn’t just a new schedule of jaw-dropping symphonic shows–it’s a whole new chapter in the symphony’s musical story! That’s because its new music director, Dr. Yaniv Attar, just came to town. After wowing orchestra crowds at a recent guest appearance, Attar has now returned to Bellingham for good. We got to chat just two days after he moved to town, speaking mostly of his inspirations (Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 being one) and the enormous variety to come in this new season. Our conversation made it clear that, besides simply being a talented and personable artist, Attar will bring even more breadth to our region’s existing musical vibrance. “I look forward to working with the orchestra and continuing its growth,” he told me. “Maestro Roger Briggs has done such a tremendous job with WSO, and I feel very privileged to step into his shoes.” While Maestro Attar’s story has taken him from Israel to New York to Québec to London and Birmingham (and more!), we’re most excited to have him here in Bellingham! This season’s kick-off show on October 6th will introduce Attar to the crowd, featuring a unified performance with no soloists. As he puts it, “The orchestra is the soloist.” So with a festive focus, the symphony will display its diverse sounds and styles with Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Dvorák. After that, audiences will see a thrilling performance by Gil Shaham on November 3rd. This Israeli violinist actually
performed for Attar’s high school when the to-be conductor was a teen. A major inspiration for Attar’s musical career, Shaham will play the magnificent Violin Concerto in D major by Brahms. The third show of WSO’s 2013-2014 season will be the annual holiday concert on December 8th. Joined by the Bellingham Chamber Chorale and the Bellingham Children’s Choir, the orchestra will bring forth several beloved holiday classics. Now imagine the resounding horns in Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto or the cascading keys of Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos. The February 9th show will feature brass-heavy pieces centered on Tine Thing Helseth, a captivating trumpet player. Then on March 30th, Ryan Stiles will join local pianists Dan and Victoria Sabo in an all-French program featuring Saint-Saëns’ theatrical Carnival of the Animals. This is variety at its very best! The season will end on May 4th with a tribute to Attar’s inspiration: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. With four exceptional soloists, the Whatcom Chorale will join forces with WSO to perform this exalting finale. But that’s not quite the end of this year’s celebration. The Symphony has planned a special performance for families and children coming in May. If you have young ones, stay tuned for details! Bellingham welcomes Maestro Yaniv Attar as a new character in a regional music epic! And as we chatted about his first-ever trip to Bellingham, Attar beamed with appreciation. “There’s so much art in this town, it’s unbelievable,” he mused. Well, Attar, we’re happy to have you here! So come celebrate this new chapter with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra’s

Celebrating Music with the Mojo Music Community Music Fest by Joanna Nesbit In 2009, Mojo Music held its first humble Community Music Fest in the Mojo Music store parking lot on Meridian Street. This year’s fourth annual Community Music Fest will be held at the Boundary Bay Beer Garden on Sunday, August 18 from noon to 4pm. Festival entry is free and open to all ages, with suggested donations going to Blue Skies for Children.
“Odd Ones Out” performing at the Community Music Fest held in the Boundary Bay Beer Garden.
As the festival gained momentum through its early years, Boundary Bay offered the use of the beer garden space and the festival moved to downtown Bellingham. The new location gave the festival more visibility and raised awareness of the event, as well as the festival’s fundraiser beneficiary, Blue Skies for Children. Blue Skies is a non-profit organization serving homeless, lowincome, and foster children in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, and all proceeds from the festival benefit the organization, whose mission is to raise self-esteem and hope for needy children. Besides providing essentials and enrichment programs to kids, the organization also funds music lessons and instrument rentals. Partnering with the organization feels like a logical choice, says Jennifer Karnecki, festival organizer. Also a celebration of music, the family-friendly festival provides an afternoon of foot-stompin’ fun, and it’s a great way to introduce your kids to the world of music. Mojo’s goal with the festival is to remind us that music is accessible to everyone. “You don’t need to be a ‘musician’ to make or love music,” says Karnecki. “Our community has abundant resources that make music accessible to all. The festival celebrates these resources and the people who participate.” Throughout the afternoon, the Mojo School of Music (MSM) students of all ages and instructors will give performances, including hand drumming,
a classical guitar ensemble, summer jam bands, and an MSM Instructor Jam. A Resource Fair will feature music-oriented organizations and their accompanying information for families to learn more about what’s offered in the community, and a kid-friendly arena gives kids a chance to try out rhythm instruments. Kids can also check out instruments in the “petting zoo.” Everyone will enjoy the music and the free giveaways occurring at the top of every hour. Raffle tickets for a Taylor guitar are available for $1 each, with the guitar giveaway happening at 4pm. And of course, food and beverages are available from Boundary Bay. Perhaps what surprises festivalgoers most is learning that Mojo is also a music school, says Karnecki. Mojo has been providing lessons to the Bellingham community since 1971, and these days, more than 150 families participate in lessons at the MSM. Students can learn guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, and other instruments. To learn more about Mojo Music, visit www.mojomusicdiscount.com or call 360-671-0614. To learn more about Blue Skies for Children and how children are served, visit www.blueskiesforchildren.org. Donations for Blue Skies are being collected in-store now, and you can stop by the store at 2626 Meridian St. to donate $1 to support needy children of Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

Props and Ponies by Osa Hale Summer is a great time to feel patriotic in America. You’ve got Memorial Day in May, Flag Day in June, and the Fourth of July brings all the fireworks and barbecues that Uncle Sam could ask for. Now, there is another event that can bring some of the greatest pieces of American history to life. On the third Saturday in August, the Heritage Flight Museum will be putting on Props & Ponies, a celebration of vintage cars and aircraft. The event will be held at the Skagit Regional Airport, a first for the museum’s all-American fundraiser. Doors open at 10am on August 17, and the event lasts until 4pm. It is preceded by a wine tasting on Friday, August 16, featuring local vineyards as well as high-quality brews and food, all set to the tunes of local musicians. Props & Ponies is all about the melding of iconic American machinery, says Kate Simmons, the director of programs and administration with the Heritage Flight Museum. By combining Mustang convertibles with the airplanes that inspired them, it’s a slice of mechanical Americana. “The mixings of the cars and the airplanes— it’s such a good combination. Sexy old cars and sexy vintage airplanes go well together. There’s lots of good sounds and fun things going on,” Simmons says. “It’s a great chance to see some really cool icons of this country and a time past, and going forward into the future.” More than 80 Ford Mustangs will be on display, ranging from vintage to modern models. Vintage airplanes will be flying throughout the day, both solo and in formation. Because of the new location, there will be more vehicles and planes than ever, along with a nice selection of food vendors. The Port of Skagit has been one of many supportive sponsors, along with a big team of volunteers. Public admission will be a $5 suggested donation for each adult, with all proceeds from the tasting event and the Saturday show going to the museum. Although service animals are welcome, the public is encouraged to leave their pets at home.

Celebrate Summer at the NW Washington Fair by Stephanie Dethlefs The Northwest Washington Fair strives to provide the community with a venue where we can celebrate the area’s agricultural heritage, create memories, and be entertained. With over 100 years of experience, the 2013 Fair is bound to deliver the goods from August 12-17 in Lynden, WA. “The five core values of the Fair are Agriculture, Youth, Education, Entertainment and Community,” explains Jim Baron, Fair Manager. “We hope that the people that come to the fair this year immerse themselves in all areas.” Entertainment will be in abundance, headlined by such acts as country legend Dwight Yoakam on Aug. 13, rockers The Guess Who on Aug. 14, young country artist Hunter Hayes on Aug. 15, and gospel singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman on Aug. 16. Tickets for the various concerts range in price from $25 to $50, depending on the show and seating, and are now available for purchase. All four shows begin at 7:30 p.m. The Haggen Festival Stage, located just inside the gates, provides interactive entertainment with the performances of comedic juggler Paul Isaak, hypnotist Tammy Harris Barton, “America’s Funniest Cowgirl” Karen Quest, and ‘50s and ‘60s music from the quartet Bobby Sox and the Jukebox. All four artists perform each day. Additional acts include JP Falcon, Blayne Washington and Grace Country, the Clan Heather Dancers, the Halleck Street Ramblers, Jaded Lovers, and The Lost Highway Band. The Clocktower in the center of the fairgrounds and the RECO Community Stage near the water tower will also host a number of dancers, musicians and other performers. Do loud motors get your engine running? Check out the Demolition Derby at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12 or the giant Roar and Rumble show at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, featuring competitive monster trucks and FMX stunt riders from around the country. The fun includes a “tough truck” competition for a $1500 purse. Check the website for entry guidelines. Humans are not the only performers around the Fair. Two daily horse shows take place Tuesday-Friday in the Grandstand with Eight Horse Hitches, Crazy Eights and Nooksack Valley Riders. For the first time, the Fair presents the Cowboy Race, where 18 contestants will compete in single elimination over the week to win $1500. Check the website for entry guidelines.

New to the Fair this year is an appearance by Bellingham’s own Camel Safari program. There will be educational opportunities about the camels as well as an opportunity to ride one. “A fun thing about the fair is that every year is different,” says Baron. “The Fair is history worth repeating.”
Top left: Dwight Yoakam has 12 gold albums and nine platinum or multi-platinum albums. He is the featured performer on August 13 at 7:30pm. Top right: Rising star Hunter Hayes, who has received three Grammy nominations as well as the CMA award for Best New Artist of 2012, will perform on August 15 at 7:30pm. Middle left: On August 16, at 7:30pm, Steven Curtis Chapman will take the stage. Chapman is the most awarded artist in Christian music history with five Grammy Awards and 57 Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association. Middle right: The Guess Who reunited in 2000 with original members Jim Kale and Garry Peterson joined by Derek Sharp, Leonard Shaw and Laurie McKenzie. They will perform on August 14 at 7:30pm. Of course, the Fair is not just about entertainment. Youth programs 4H and Future Farmers of America as well as Open Class exhibitors will display their cattle, horses, rabbits, chickens, and other animals throughout the fairgrounds. Visit the Henry Jansen Ag Center for the Small Animal Experience, which will include expectant pigs, or head over to the Agriculture Adventure Center near the Grandstand to experience the tractor exhibits and the Farming for Life exhibits (and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can milk Twisty the cow.) The Dairy Barn will once again share its maternity ward for cows about to give birth to calves.
As it has done for decades, the Fair will host many vendors and carnival rides (including the brand new Grand Prix roller coaster) and offers food, fun and education for the whole family. Gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. Carnival hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Daily gate admission is $12 adult, $10 senior, and $5 youth. Season passes may be purchased for $54 adult, $45 senior, and $24 youth. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Tickets, parking passes and carnival wristbands are also available for purchase online at a discounted rate.
