Artists Get Out More — Ninth PAPO Hits The Streets by Christopher Key There was a time when you might have to climb to a freezing garret in a fourthfloor walk-up in order to watch a painter at work. It tends to be a solitary endeavor, and not every painter is comfortable with an audience during the act of creation. Not so with Trish Harding’s ninth annual Plein Air Paint Out coming to a street near you on Saturday, August 23. The French phrase en plein air literally means “in the open air” and is generally applied to painters who work outdoors. Working outdoors became increasingly popular in the mid-19th century as The Barbizon School and Impressionism began to make themselves felt. The introduction of paints in tubes in the 1870’s made en plein air much easier, as did the invention of the French Box Easel. The latter, still in use today, enables the artist to carry an easel and all painting necessities in a box the size of a briefcase. Harding is a leading practitioner and teacher of modern-day plein air.
• Entries must be original paintings, no photocopies or Xerox, giclee or other reproduction. • Paintings must be on paper, board, or stretched canvas in the size of 8x10” only. • Entries must be framed in a plein air frame provided by the entry fee. • Entries must reflect the uniqueness of Downtown Bellingham and 100 percent completed en plein air and surrendered to Mindport Gallery at 5pm, the day of the paint out. • Artists can submit only one painting. • The exhibition will be hosted by Mindport Gallery at 210 W Holly St. Laurie Potter with her PAPO piece.

In addition to Harding’s Studio UFO and Mindport, there is another sponsor vital to the cause. “Thank you, Fourth Corner Frames, for making the beautiful plein air frames available at cost for our artists and for framing them and getting them ready to hang,” Harding said.
Ron Pattern painting the Mount Baker Theatre.
The PAPO is an unusual opportunity not just to watch artists in action, but to see how they translate familiar scenes onto canvas. With any luck, we’ll have lots of plein air and not too much rain air.
“Artists will report to a location of their choice to paint in downtown Bellingham around or near the Holly Street Corridor,” Harding said. “The mission of the show is for the community to see all the artists on one day in the downtown area, so we ask them to choose a spot downtown where they are visible to the public.” Only 30 artists from this area are chosen from dozens of applicants. “This is not a fundraiser,” Harding said. “Artists will get 80 percent of sales.” The requirements are very specific: • Entries must be original, entirely the work of the entrant, executed on the day of the paint out only. email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”

Lummi Island Artist Studio Tour by Joanna Nesbit
Labor Day weekend brings the annual Lummi Island Artist Studio Tour and the opportunity to tour studios that aren’t usually open to the public, talk to the artists, and appreciate hidden-away island settings. The free, self-guided tour will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31, 10am-6pm each day. Pack a picnic or plan to have lunch at one of the island eateries, which include Beach Store Café, Sauseburger Stand (sausages, salads, and specials) adjacent to the Islander Store, Taproot Café below the Willows Inn, and of course, the Willows Inn itself (reservations a must). Typically featuring a core of some 25 artists, the tour offers a range of price points, from inexpensive craft items to high-end professional art. You’ll meet potters, sculptors, jewelers, photographers, fiber artists, and painters. Here are a few of the participating artists: Tour founder and co-organizer Ria Nickerson, owner of Good Thunder Arts, specializes in stoneware sinks, tiles, lamps, and other decorative and functional pottery featuring Pacific Northwest motifs. Basil Atkinson’s work can be found at the same studio, which includes stone and metal sculpture, custom monuments and signs, as well as stone, bone, ivory, semi-precious stone and glass jewelry. Co-organizer Ria Harboe’s sculptures and paintings will be displayed at her studio on North Nugent, with a new painting also showing at the Beach Store Café. Harboe draws influence from Scandinavian artists, her Danish immigrant upbringing, and landscapes, blending both dark and light in her unique paintings (www.ria-harboe.com).

each day, and can also try their hand at glazing their own teacup. This activity has proven popular with all ages and costs $20 a teacup, including a mini glazing lesson, glazes and same-day firing. Long-time islander and glass artist Art Hohl’s Vitreous Visions glass studio lies just up the road. Hohl uses colorful designs and combines layers of clear, colored, iridized and dichroic glass to create functional and whimsical art, including bowls, platters, coasters, bird feeders, and jewelry. Tom Lutz creates distinctive wood furniture with simple lines, as well as graphic digital art inspired by his Northwest photographs, and will display his work at Village Point Marina on Legoe Bay Rd. (www.tomlutzdesigns.com). Ted Mork specializes in one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces featuring gemstones, glass, beads and sterling silver. He is located on West Shore Dr. on the north end of the island near Point Migley.

Her new 5’x6’ painting, entitled Sunburst, will be on display at the Beach Store Café.
For fiber arts, visit Mary Barstow next door to the Islander Store (quilted wall hangings, table décor, and quilts) or the Gude Earth Crafts Knitwear and Gift Shop (www.lummi-islandknitart.com) on Tuttle Lane, where Nancy Zimmerman, Susan McCaslin and Karen Weber share one location, offering things like kid-mohair shawls, hooked rugs, silk scarves, neckties, and sweaters, vests, and hats in practical and washable designs. The tour is compact enough you’ll be able to visit most, if not all, the studios. If you’d rather ditch the car, many studios are accessible by bicycle – but plan for a hill or two. Park at Gooseberry Point and pick up a tour map at The Islander store, just south of the ferry dock, or at any studio location. For more information about ferry schedules, fares, and the island, visit www.lummi-island.com. Fares can now be paid with credit/debit cards. Bellingham TheatreWorks presents The Ghosts of Tonkin August 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. Bellingham TheatreWorks is touring a 60-minute theatre piece called The Ghosts of Tonkin, a drama about Wayne Morse and the origins of the Vietnam War. The play premiers in Bellingham and then tours to Portland and Eugene. In 1964, Oregon’s Senator Wayne Morse was an outspoken critic of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that authorized military intervention in Vietnam. Senator Morse was one of only two congressmen to vote against the resolution. This award-winning play dramatizes the behind-the-scenes story of how seemingly well-intentioned public officials brought about one of the most devastating episodes in the history of the United States: The Vietnam War. The Vietnam War devastated two countries, toppled the President of the United States, and killed two million people. And one man tried to stop it before it began, Oregon’s Senator Wayne Morse. The Ghosts of Tonkin is based on telephone conversations, senate transcripts, recently declassified NSA documents, and other sources. In addition to Wayne Morse, characters include LBJ, Robert McNamara, Dean Rusk, William Fulbright, as well as several fictitious characters. In August, 1964, our smoldering involvement in Vietnam was ignited into all out war when the North Vietnamese attacked a US destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin. But it was later revealed that the alleged attack, in fact, never happened. When the Iraq War began, people drew an analogy between the genesis of that war, and the beginnings of the Vietnam War. This made playwright Steve Lyons curious to learn more about the origins of the Vietnam War. That curiosity led to Wayne Morse and to this script. Following the Bellingham premier, the play then tours to Oregon (Sept. 27 in Portland and Sept. 28 in Eugene). The tour of Oregon is in conjunction with the “Wayne Morse Legacy Series” sponsored by the Wayne Morse Center of the University of Oregon. Every performance is followed by a post-play discussion. In Bellingham, the post-play discussion panel includes playwright Steve Lyons as well as retired Oregon newsman Floyd McKay, who covered Wayne Morse during the 1960s. Every discussion panel also includes a Vietnam Vet. Joe Teehan of Bellingham radio station KGMI moderates August 29 and Janet Marino of the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center moderates August 30. This drama, with a sprinkling of humor, is directed by Mark Kuntz. The performance in Bellingham will be August 29 and 30 at 7:30pm at the Bellingham High School auditorium, 2020 Cornwall Avenue. Tickets are $10 and are available online at www.BellinghamTheatreWorks.org and at the door. For more information, visit www.BellinghamTheatreWorks.org. The Northwest Washington Fair by Osa Hale The air is sticky and deliciously humid, filled with the smell of a myriad of foods being fried. Somewhere off in the distance, a camel bellows. It is midAugust, and there is no better place to be than right here, at the Northwest Washington Fair. The Fair is a lot of things. It is a chance to eat as many elephant ears and curly fries as possible and test your stomach’s limits on a variety of carnival rides. It is a place where you can cheer along as cars and trucks crush one another in the demolition derby. It is a venue to see beloved musical artists perform (2014 will see country star Gary Allan, rock band Collective Soul, and Huey Lewis and the News). Getting to the heart of the Fair, it becomes clear that it is about more than cotton candy and battling vehicles. Its core values have always remained focused on the community, with agricultural education at the forefront. Events and showings are put on by local chapters of 4-H and
26
FFA, both organizations focused on engaging young people interested in agriculture as well as other natural resource industries. Visitors can check out exhibits and activities meant to showcase local talent in photography, quilting, baking, or duct-tape art, just to name a few. There are also many animals on display, from more traditional livestock (cows,
horses, sheep, pigs) to pets (cats, dogs, rabbits). If just seeing the animals isn’t enough, there is a Farming for Life exhibit that gives much more information about local agriculture and offers a hands-on milking experience. Jim Baron, manager of the Fair, said that the animals are the most popular part of the week-long event, though they are clearly not the only attraction. “From baby pigs and calves being born at the fair, to baby chicks, bunny rabbits, and cows and horses, people love the animals. But to others the Fair is all about entertainment: it’s the concerts and the demo derby. And of course, some people never get beyond the carnival,” Baron said. “I think one of the reasons for the Fair’s popularity is that it is truly a unique event that has something for everyone.” The animals on display also include creatures that would not be found on a farm. Camels were a new addition in 2013, and will make a return this year. They may face some competition, since this year’s Fair will include, for the first time, Predators of the Heart, which is billed as Washington’s largest traveling wildlife exhibit and reptile show. Another new attraction this year will be the incorporation of the Lynden PRCA Rodeo. The rodeo, which traditionally takes place a week or two after the Fair, will now be held on Tuesday and Wednesday during Fair Entertainment News Northwest ~ August 2014
Week. This will add a whole extra element of entertainment, with bull riding, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. In addition to the official rodeo, the Fair will also include a Rascal Rodeo, an afternoon rodeo event with specialneeds athletes. The fun all begins on August 11 at 9am and doesn’t stop until 11pm on August 16. Admission is charged on a daily basis, at the front gate; adults pay $12, seniors pay $10, and youth tickets are $7 each. Gate tickets can be purchased in advance online, with savings of $1 off each ticket. There are additional fees for some of the events related to the Fair, such as the Demolition Derby, the rodeo, and the concerts. If You Pour It, They Will Come by Marla Bronstein Management of The Porterhouse Pub, a local Skagit Valley brewhouse, first dreamed up and organized The Porterhouse Brewfest, the “Blues & Brews Block Party,” for the benefit of the historic Lincoln Theatre back in 2002. The Lincoln Theatre, a local landmark, was built in 1926 and actively showcases movies, live performances and other cultural events year-round. Now in its twelfth year, The Porterhouse Brewfest expects to bring about 500 beer and music lovers into downtown Mount Vernon on Saturday, August 9. The Brewfest is a 21 and over event, and runs from 2-7pm. If you’ve never been, this event traditionally takes place on the second Saturday in August in downtown Mount Vernon, practically ensuring optimum weather conditions. Gates Street between First Street and the Skagit River are blocked off for pedestrian traffic only. Roger Gietzen, the Director of the Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation, invites everyone for taste-testing wares of the twenty invited wineries and breweries. He encourages returning attendees to witness the progress made to the revitalized waterfront, the location of next year’s party. The cost for tickets purchased in advance is $20, and includes 5 tastes. Admission will be $25 on the day of the event. Additional tastes will be available for $2 each at the fest. A special $15 ticket is available for “designated drivers.” Stop by, grab a meal from one of the food trucks on-site, and sit back and enjoy the blues talents of Margaret Wilder Band, Mary McPage Band, and Chris Eger Band. George Jones Tribute Concert at the Haynie Opry in Blaine by Marla Bronstein Years ago, Matt Audette thought it might be a fun idea to bring a little “down home Nashville, classic country music” to Blaine. Audette had been playing and entertaining nationally, had performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and had dreamed of bringing that same traditional country music experience to his community. The Haynie Grange in Blaine was the perfect home for the Haynie Opry.
Matt Audette and The Circle of Friends Band have been together for fifteen years. Accompanying Matt’s guitar and vocals and providing harmonies are Walt Roder, lead guitar; Ron Reiss, drummer and Karl Wagoner, bass guitar.
impersonation show. (He does a spot-on Edith Bunker from All In The Family that is, in itself, worth the price of admission.) On Friday, August 8 at 7pm, featured guest artists The Honeybees will perform at the Opry for the first time. The Honeybees, now in their 11th year together, are a very versatile group. Their repertoire includes songs from the likes of the Andrew Sisters, the Mills Brothers, Elvis and Patsy Cline. Tickets are $15.
Remembering George Jones, 1931-2013.
Every year for the past nine years, he and Walt Roder transform the 320-seat venue into a space reminiscent of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Traditionally, the Haynie Opry has been a two-day event, during the months of June, July and August. This year, Audette thought the community would enjoy a more regular schedule of country music and monthly shows started in March, performed by Matt Audette & The Circle of Friends Band. The Circle of Friends Band consists of Audette, who sings lead and plays rhythm guitar, Karl Wagoner on bass guitar, Walt Roder on lead guitar, and Ron Reiss on the drums. Earlier shows included a Buck Owens mini-show, comedy songs of country music and Audette’s

The Honeybees have been singing together for 11 years. The quartet (Kathy Murray, Marcia Reimers, Iris Likkel and Barb Fuller) will be the featured guests at the Opry on August 8.
On the afternoon of Saturday, August 9, the Southern Gospel Matinee Show is slated for 3pm. Tickets are $10. The main event starts at 7pm on Saturday, and will feature Matt Audette & The Circle of Friends Band in a special

“George Jones” tribute show with Vicky Jo Bock as Tammy Wynette. Tickets for the Saturday night show are $20. Audette’s mother, Marion Audette, was a huge George Jones fan, and enjoyed the Haynie Opry very much. Sadly, she passed away Nov. 2, 2013. It seems doubly fitting that this 9th season be dedicated to her memory. In the past, featured musicians have included Ted Vigil, Jack Greene, Tommy Overstreet, Rod Erickson, and singer Carla Collins. Audette sees the audience growing, and is considering adding more shows to the lineup after the Tribute show closes in August. Tickets for all shows are sold at the door. To guarantee yourself a ticket to any event, you can purchase tickets in advance at Cozy Corner Books and Espresso, this year’s sponsor. For your convenience there are two locations: 3094 Northwest Ave. in Bellingham and 5772 2nd Ave. in Ferndale. Tickets will be discounted $1 if purchased in advance. The event is smoke-free, alcohol-free, in a theater-style setting. Audette suggests you come early for a good seat. Refreshments are available for purchase inside, and you will find down-home awesome homemade cookies, pies, and lemonade! Audette is already looking forward to next year’s line-up in anticipation of the 10th anniversary of the show. He promises it will be better than ever! The Haynie Opry takes place at 3344 Haynie Rd., Blaine. (Exit 270 off I-5, N. on Valley View Rd. 2 miles, left on Haynie Rd. for 1/4 mile, facility on the right.) Subdued Stringband Jamboree (2014) by Osa Hale In 2001, a tight-knit group of musicians came together over their love of picking, singing, and stomping, and put together a festival of local folk music. Thirteen years later, it has developed into the much-loved, three-day, two-night Subdued Stringband Jamboree.
It’s also a very family-friendly event. There is “Seriously Subdued Camping,” for those who seek a quiet place to sleep, a special kid’s section in front of the stage so that they can get up close to the musicians, and a whole slew of craft activities that culminate in a Kid’s Parade, with hand-made instruments and painted faces.
This year, the jamboree will be host to many local bands, old and new, as well as hosting some impressive out-of-town groups. The festival features two main performance areas, known as the “flat stage” and the “slanted stage,” which allows the music to continue all day with no break between bands. The music starts at 5pm on Thursday, noon on Friday and 9am on Saturday. Even once the amplified music stops at 11pm, the jamming continues, says musician Robert Sarazin Blake, one of the main directors of the festivals. “Part of the fun of staying late is that we have an after-hours, unamplified stage,” Blake explains. Between the Midnight Serenade Tent, continued music on the slanted stage, and smaller groups making music across the campground, Blake says the festival cultivates not only performances, but also community.
You will find activities for adults as well. There are instructional workshops, with lessons in anything from kitchen instrumentation to partner dancing, and more conversational “show and tell” sessions, which Blake described as a chance to see an artist perform on a smaller stage. The Subdued Stringband Jamboree takes place at the Deming Logging Show Grounds, on August 7, 8, and 9. Single day tickets are $35 each in advance or $40 at the gate, while a weekend pass is $75 in advance or $120 at the gate. Presale tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/694427 until 4pm on August 6. Camping fees range from $10-$25, with cyclists camping for free. All Jazzed Up Bellwether Swings Into September by Christopher Key What could possibly be better than a sunny Saturday afternoon on the waterfront in Bellingham? Several things, actually. How about adding some jazz from some of the finest musicians in the Northwest? How about a beer and wine garden? How about free admission? It’s the fourth annual Bellwether Jazz Festival, and it simply doesn’t get better than that. It’s all brought to you courtesy of the Port of Bellingham and The Jazz Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing performance opportunities for jazz musicians, providing music lessons for youth and financial assistance to musicians for medical care. This event is held at Tom Glenn Common, located at 1 Bellwether Way. Bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on the lawn close to the stage, or take advantage of the patio-style chairs, benches, and tables on the plaza for public seating.

New Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center! Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center (JMAC) is a non-profit organization (501c3) established to support live music programs for performance and education within Bellingham and Whatcom County. Their vision is to promote the ongoing values of live music performance in the communities in which we live. JMAC has partnered with Boxley’s Jazz Club and Music Fund located in North Bend, Washington. For the past 6 years. Boxley’s has been providing the small community of North Bend, population 5,000, with a music and performance venue for world class jazz performances and educational opportunities seven nights a week. “At this point we are launching a donation campaign to raise the funds to lease the space previously occupied by the Blue Horse Gallery to become our home for regional, national and international performances, educational outreach, student combo classes/performances, and private lessons. You can make a tax-deductible donation of any amount at boxleysplace.com/Bellingham,” says Julian MacDonough, the man behind this new venture. “If we are unable to raise enough funds to open the performing space this year, the funds will be directed towards educational outreach in the public schools on a weekly basis, private lessons to those who cannot afford them, weekly performances of the WWU faculty band, a monthly Tribute Jazz: Art of the Piano Trio Series and bi-monthly concerts featuring regional and national acts.” For $25 a month, you will become a member of this great organization which will entitle you to free admission to any act performing at JMAC. From student bands, to the WWU faculty group, to national jazz acts and beyond. Just $25 a month gets you into all events free! Also with your subscription you will have access to the Boxley Music Fund website (www.boxleymusicfund.com), where you will find hours of live music that you can listen to online.
