Bluegrass Festival Comes to Hovander Park
“. . . some of the best players in bluegrass! Chris Jones’ voice is there with the great masters, and the Night Drivers should no longer be driving at night but playing music 24/7.” —Steve Martin
“Special Consensus may be Chicago’s very own veteran bluegrass band, but talent like this is the property of the world.” —David Royko, Chicago Tribune
by Marla Bronstein Bluegrass fans will be thrilled to learn that Hovander Park in Ferndale will host the First Annual Hovander Homestead Bluegrass Festival. The festival will take place over Labor Day Weekend, September 2-5. The Festival officially opens on Friday evening with a salmon feed. The festival area will feature craft and food vendors, a beer garden, contests for instrumentalists, informal jam areas, an instrument swap meet, children’s stage with entertainment and activities, morning workshops taught by main-stage performers and non-stop Bluegrass music from noon to 8pm each day. The entire weekend will be filled with the familiar strains of high energy bluegrass songs, featuring guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, dobro and bass. The two-stage festival will feature nationally recognized Bluegrass bands, including Chris Jones and The Night Drivers and The Special Consensus, emerging artists from across the country, and plenty of local talent. The Hovander Homestead Bluegrass Festival is a program of the Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation (WPRF.) The WPRF is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting parks, trails and recreational opportunities throughout Whatcom County, its cities and communities since 1989. I met with Daniel Tepper, President of WPRF, who has been playing banjo since he was a teenager. As the President of WPRF, Daniel tries to come up with unique and successful ways to raise funds for the Foundation. The idea for the festival came out of a conversation between Daniel and David Starr, head of 5 Starr Jams, a monthly local jam for those who want to play Bluegrass music. When Daniel first met David, they talked at length about bluegrass music, and

what bluegrass players (and their audiences) did during the summer. They discussed the different festivals that are held around the state, which brainstormed into “let’s make one happen in Whatcom County!” After completing an in-depth financial analysis and feasibility study, Daniel concluded a festival would be successful as long as he could partner with Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department. The Hovander Park location was chosen because of the ample grounds for camping and parking. When he brought the proposal to his board for approval, he didn’t know if any of them played bluegrass music, liked it, or even knew what it was! As a result of the partnership, proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit WPRF and Hovander Homestead Park’s Farm Animal Contact Area. Ticket prices range from $12.50 to $55. Children under 12 are free with a paid

adult ticket. Advance tickets for the festival are available online and by phone, and will also be sold at the gate. The festival grounds will be open for camping on noon Friday, and will remain open until Monday afternoon (Labor Day.) There are unlimited camping sites and spaces can be reserved on a first-come first-served basis. Campers, RVs, and tents are welcome, but there are no hookups. For those who don’t want to camp, there are a number of Whatcom County hotels listed on the website who will honor Festival rates if booked with enough notice. The Piper Music Conservatory — Much More Than Just Music Lessons A conservatory is a school for music and fine arts education. Now Bellingham has a new one, and it promises to increase musical knowledge as well as instrument proficiency with a wide variety of classes and learning opportunities. For twenty-five years, Piper Music sold sheet music and instructional books to musicians in the Bellingham area. Recently, the business changed hands from Mary Jackson to Dr. William Brooke, a lyric-tenor with a Master’s Degree in Vocal Pedagogy. Dr. Brooke has moved the storefront to a new location at 1213 Cornwall Avenue. Pianos are displayed and sold in the retail store as well as other classical music paraphernalia. The familiar tables offering a wide variety of sheet music are proudly displayed in the front of the space, but plans are underway to build a recital hall and several soundproof teaching studios for private lessons in piano, voice and other classical instruments. “The core of the conservatory concept is to provide a complete, holistic approach to music education,” said Dr. Brooke. “Too often students will go, and they will receive excellent instruction on their
instruments, but they are neglecting areas of music history, music theory ... other aspects of interest to the students.” Dr. Brooke is personally teaching voice lessons outside retail hours as well as guiding students in vocal health and theory. Construction of the fifty seat recital hall and teaching studios in the back of the space have seen some delays but he is hopeful that once renovations are complete this fall a full schedule of lessons and classes will be posted on the website. Persons interested in teaching at the conservatory or using the recital hall may contact Dr. Brooke to discuss the options that will be available once the space is finished. He will be hiring more teachers this fall and working with them to form a “quality music center like you’d see on the East coast… (or) San Francisco.” Potential students of all ages can arrange for private weekly lessons by calling 360-738-7166 or following the link at: http://wsbrooke1.wix.com/ pipermusic. According to Dr. Brooke, what sets Piper Music Conservatory apart will be the access that each enrolled student gets to weekly meetings, alternating between classroom instruction

and “master classes” where several students will assemble with their instructor and share the music lesson. Dr. Brooke recommends that students commit to a 3-6 month block of lessons and offers an adjustable rate to reward those who pay up front. Should someone just wish to attend the classes without private instruction, that option is also offered. One tenant of the recital hall will be the Bellingham Music Enrichment Project (BMEP), a local organization directing The Whatcom Youth Choirs (WYC) and The Bellingham Community Chorus. Dr. Timothy Black, the artistic director of the BMEP plans to teach theory classes in the conservatory as well as use the hall for the WYC to rehearse and perform. “Come enjoy the space,” Dr. Black said in a recent interview. “There’s so much going on (musically) in Bellingham and the community. The expectation is just to offer young people the opportunity to sing and learn together. Being musical artists completes people as human beings. It gives them a sense of community and culture.” A meet and greet event is scheduled for August 29 at Piper Music for potential members in 3rd through 8th grades. Rehearsals will start mid-September. More information on WYC can be found on at bellinghammusicenrichmentproject. weebly.com or by calling Dr. Timothy and Mrs. Amy Black at 360-927-0888. Dr. Brooke summed up the appeal of music education with a simple philosophy: “It’s about having fun,” he said, “and expanding your skills so you can have more fun.”

Peace Arch Park International Concert Series by Osa Hale Sitting on the border of the United States and Canada, Peace Arch Historical State Park is a beautiful symbol of international cooperation. The arch itself celebrates lasting peace, colorful plants bloom in the gardens, and visitors can enjoy a variety of events that honor art and culture across borders. It’s no surprise then, that it was chosen to host the August portion of the Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks, a performance series put on by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Every Sunday, there will be music in the park, spanning cultures and eras. August 7 will feature Kinnaly Lao, a troupe that performs traditional Laotian music and dances. Based in Seattle, Kinnaly Lao includes more than 60 second-generation Lao-American youth who take and teach classes. The goal is to form community and instill important values, while helping its members to celebrate their heritage and preserve their traditions. August 14 will find three talented fiddle players in a performance titled “Three Fiddles, Three Traditions.” Kristian Bugge is a widely admired Danish fiddler, Ruthie Dornfeld plays traditional American and European fiddle music, and Jamie Fox is a master of Métis fiddling, which combines French, Celtic, and Native American/First Nations styles. August 21 will fill the park with Tex-Mex music known as Conjunto,
played by Juan Barco y su Conjunto. Barco has been playing the guitar since he was a child, and honed his skills and musical ear on the migrant trail from
Texas to Minnesota with his family. The music he plays is a blend of European, American, and Mexican traditions. Finally, on August 28, the park will once again be filled with fiddle music, as Randal Bays and Friends play traditional Irish music. Bays is lauded in the fiddling world, for his grasp of the ancient and complex art of Irish fiddle music. Viewers will find themselves tapping their toes at this lively performance. Every one-hour concert will begin at 2pm. These events are free and open to the public, although a Discover Pass is required to park vehicles inside the park.

Art Exhibition: “Getting There” – An
Change in Ownership at Good Earth Pottery Good Earth Pottery has been a fixture in the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham since 1969, and will continue so for years to come! When Linda Stone decided to retire after over a decade of co-ownership, she and co-owner Debra Martin knew they didn’t have far to look to fill her shoes. Their employee of nearly seven years, Ann Marie Cooper, was a natural fit. She agreed without hesitation. Hired for her sales and marketing skills in 2009, Ann Marie had only basic knowledge of pottery at the time. It didn’t take long for that to change. Since then she’s become a potter herself, co-founded Whatcom Artists of Clay & Kiln (WACK), and is active in the Washington Clay Arts Association. She now adds co-owner of one of the oldest specialty galleries in Whatcom County to that list of accomplishments. As with all life changes, there’s a new energy in the gallery, and partners Debra Martin and Ann Marie Cooper have ideas aplenty brewing. One of those ideas has already launched: an online gallery to more easily connect collectors from afar with their favorite Good Earth potters. Visit the gallery of locally handmade ceramics at 1000 Harris Avenue or online at www.goodearthpots.com.

Join us for an artist reception on Fri., Aug. 5 at Fourth Corner Frames & Gallery (311 W. Holly St.) during the downtown Bellingham Artwalk. Free. The 2016 Northwest Washington Fair by Osa Hale Imagine northwest Washington as a living organism, the rivers and highways as a circulatory system, people and animals as cells moving and interacting. As the summer heats up, it becomes clear what the heart of the area is: the Northwest Washington Fair. This year, the Fair takes this on with its theme, “The Heart of Fun.” What makes the Fair so much fun? There is something for everyone to do, to enjoy, and to learn from. The Grandstand arena hosts the most flashy shows, with so many fun events that many people are sure to come back day after day. Monday is a chance for kids and adults alike to enjoy the smash-and-crash excitement of the Demolition Derby. Tuesday and Wednesday are rodeo days, with the 12th Annual Lynden PRCA Rodeo bringing

roughstock and timed events and the Rascal Rodeo presenting rodeo events for athletes with special needs. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are all about the musical guests. This year, taking the stage will be gospel darling Bill Gaither and his band, Canadian rock band Loverboy (known for their hit, “Working for the Weekend”), and country music star Josh Turner. It may seem like the Grandstand events alone are enough to make up a super fun week. But they are just the beginning. The Fair is also a celebration of the agricultural work done throughout the state, with exhibits offered by 4H and FFA, ranging from livestock to landscaping. These double as both competitive and educational experiences for the participants and observers.

Entertainment News Northwest ~August 2016
There are many more family-fun events and performances, including a dazzling cheer routine by the NW SilverStars and magician Sterling Dietz. A full schedule can be found on the Northwest Washington Fair’s official website at nwwafair.com , and tickets to the various events can be purchased online as well. The Fair also has a giant carnival, which will delight children of all ages and anyone young at heart. Gobble up as many curly fries, elephant ears, and hot dogs as your heart desires, then test your tummy as you take on the roller coasters and funhouse mirrors that span across the fairground. Need to take a break from the rides? Try to win a goldfish or giant stuffed animal with the carnival games. Top it all off with a ride on the ferris wheel, where you can see the whole of the Fair, and truly take in The Heart of Fun in all its glory. Set in the middle of the Washington summer, the Fair will be taking place August 15–20 this year. Gates open at 9am every day and close at 10pm. Entrance fees range from $7-$12, with no charge for children under the age of five. Carnival wristbands are $33.

Club members 2015 Participants Choice Trophy winner both host and attend car shows all summer long. was this 1957 Buick, owned by Rich Elliff One big August show (Aug. 26-27-28), from Eatonville, WA. hosted by the Elites, is the Summer Fun Rod Run at the Deming Log Show Grounds, 3295 Cedarville Rd., east of Bellingham. For the folks who show their cars, it’s a weekend camping event with an entry fee of $40 + camping fees. Many attendees have made this a part of their summer vacation for years. They come from Whatcom, Skagit, and counties beyond, as well as British Columbia, to relax in the country, and show their specialty cars. All proceeds from the show support Project Santa Claus, which has been bringing Christmas to families in need throughout Whatcom county since 1979. This year, there are two options for showing cars. Three-Day Option: The main events for show participants begin Friday night with an old-fashioned ice cream social to catch up with other “car guys and gals.” Saturday is full of fun, with the cars lining up on the show field. Some head out on a Poker Run, where drivers follow instructions and look for certain subtly described items along the way. There are venders with novelties for sale, eats and treats, plus raffle tickets for donated prizes, with that money going to the Sheriff Department’s Project Santa. There’s an “engine blow contest” that you’ve just got to check out, a delicious BBQ Salmon Dinner, and more than 60 trophies are given out on Sunday morning after breakfast. One-Day Option: Register by noon on Saturday for $15, with trophies and dash plaques to be awarded on Saturday at 3pm. The Elites invite spectators to come and view the cars on Saturday from 10am-4pm. The gate fee of This 1953 Buick, owned by Janet & $3 per person also goes to Project Santa.
