Bluegrass Festival in the Park by Courtney Kendall Get ready for a fun, musical weekend on the sprawling grounds of Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale with the Second Annual Hovander Homestead Bluegrass Festival on Labor Day Weekend, September 1-3. The weekend will be all about listening to quality bluegrass music, while supporting Whatcom County Parks at the same time. Another modification to this year’s festival is the inclusion of more workshops, a feature of most bluegrass festivals. Last year’s seven workshops have been eclipsed by this year’s eighteen workshops, which will be taught by musicians in the mainstage bands and held in the morning from 9am-12pm. “We decided to spend more time and be more specific with the workshop selection,” Daniel explains. The Bellingham Bolshevik Connection by April Metz de Montiel World Tour of Finland’s Viipurin Lauluveikot men’s choir honoring 100 years of independence from Russia by promoting Nordic culture and Finnish national pride. In 1917, as a result of the Bolshevik revolution, Finland gained its independence from Russia, which had ruled the fiercely independent Finnish people for 110 years. Now, in 2017, the Republic of Finland is honoring this centennial by sending an envoy of singers to herald this patriotic celebration. The Viipurin Lauluveikot, translated as “The Singing Fellows of Viipuri,” is a 120-yearold institution comprised of citizens of Viipuri. Viipuri is a city in the South of Finland and the site of an important battle in the fight for Finland’s independence. Established in 1897, Viipurin Lauluveikot is the second oldest choir in Finland. Choirs and singing groups are highly regarded and strongly supported in Finnish culture; of the 5.5 million Finns today, there are over 3000 organized choirs and several hundred whose mission it is to promote Nordic culture through music and traditional folk songs. Viipurin Lauluveikot will highlight Finnish composers and a diverse repertoire in multiple languages. Gospel,

jazz, and folk music from the American South will be complemented with compositions by Finland’s own Sibelius and Madetoja. A patriotic composer, Sibelius wrote the famous symphonic poem, Finlandia, which commemorates the Finnish struggle for independence. A famous politician, Arwidsson, penned a popular credo which the revolution revived, and music has continued to echo: “Swedes we are not, Russians we do not want to become, let us therefore be Finns.” The Viipurin Lauluveikot have traveled to the U.S. twice before, in 1973 and 1976. Currently, 80 gentlemen comprise Viirpurin Lauluveikot, 50 of which will be traveling to Whatcom County. Participants include various professionals, such as physicians, lawyers, policemen, and welders, who use their summer

vacation to travel with the choir. Fundraisers help to support their travel opportunities, although most of the participation is voluntary and self-funded. Locally, The Viipurin Lauluveikot have an enthusiastic sponsor. Mr. Tapio Holma resides here after discovering Bellingham as an accidental tourist. He finds that the Pacific Northwest and Finland have common geography and weather. Born in Helsinki in 1938, Tapio came to the U.S. in 1963. Now retired from the export business, he is passionate about his philanthropic association not only to the Viipurin Lauluveikot, but also as a Trustee of the Nordic Heritage Museum and Finlandia Foundation in Seattle. He is a past president of the Finlandia Foundation Suomi Chapter as well as being instrumental in the establishment of the City of Vaasa, Finland, as a sister city for Bellingham in 2008. He recently returned from a trip to Finland where he accompanied a local youth orchestra. Although not a musician himself, he feels passionately that “music knows no bounds” and is a language that speaks to all, and a universal connection for all people. Concert Schedule: August 27, 3pm, University Unitarian Church, Seattle; August 28, 7pm, United Church of Ferndale; August 29, 7pm, Michael J. Fox Theatre, Burnaby, Vancouver, B.C.; September 3, 3pm, Finn Hall, Berkeley, San Francisco; September 7, 7:30pm, Herbert Zipper Hall, Los Angeles. Skagit Woodstock Music Festival & Rockin’ Car Show —Mount Vernon’s Very Own Hot August Night! by Deborah M. Bernard The 8th Annual Skagit Woodstock Festival and Rockin’ Car Show will be happening August 19, from 11:30am to 10pm at Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon. A Hot August Night makes us think of rock music and classic cars and those lazy, crazy days of summer, and this festival has all of that, but even better: every penny of the profit from this goes to Skagit Valley Hospital’s Cancer Patient Assistant Fund. Five great bands will each perform for two hours: Jimmy Wright Band, Bucula, Never Cry, Expertease, and High Voltage. A car show will feature cars, plus classic and modern motorcycles. There will be food and craft vendors in this familyfriendly setting, and a beer garden for the adults. So, pack up the babies and grab the old ladies, and everyone goes, because everyone knows: a festival in this incredible setting which will raise money for local cancer victims? It doesn’t get much better than this! It all began with a coffee can at a bowling alley many years ago. Festival co-directors Dave Clark and Reid Harlow have bowled together on a Wednesday night league since they were kids 37 years ago. When a fellow bowler was diagnosed with cancer, they started passing a coffee can around Wednesday nights at the bowling alley to raise money for the victim. Since that humble beginning, the festival has raised over $85,000 in the past seven years, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger each year. “Dave and I just took the ball and ran with it,” Reid said. “It’s truly a labor of

our hearts, not just our heads. It’s a passion with us.” So many people have come forward to donate their time and talents to make this a success. When they got big enough to need Edgewater Park, one sponsor paid the rent on the venue, last year and this year. All the money goes to the Skagit Valley Hospital’s Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, where a committee allocates which cancer patient will get financial aid, whether it be for a cab ride or treatment, or medications, or even food, because the person isn’t working. Dave said, “What I love about this is that all the money goes to local people who are going through a terrible time in their lives.” Because of HIPPA laws, they never know who

benefitted from the money. “I love to think that people I might be shopping next to the grocery store might be somebody we’ve helped,” Dave said. “All the money stays local.” Sometimes strangers come up to them at the festival, big smiles on their faces, and give them a hug, which makes them think that these must be people who’ve been helped by the project, or families of people who have been helped. “Cancer hits rich and poor, men and women, all ages, all races, and also impacts the caregivers,” Dave said. “I lost my dad to cancer and Reid’s wife Donna survived cancer 19 years ago, so it’s personal for us.” “Brad Pritchard does a great job organizing the car and motorcycle show. And then all the car guys’ wives and kids volunteer to help run the festival, and help with the cleanup afterward. There’s so much heart in this festival,” Dave said. Local businesses have contributed great raffle prizes, everything from a fire pit to a 10x10 popup canopy, and much more. The Farmhouse Inn Restaurant has donated one of their Mile High Pies, and a turkey dinner for 20. Raffle tickets are $1. Cost for the event is $10 with kids 12 and under free. The car show costs $20 to enter, and entrants get two free passes to the music festival. This year, the car show will be just outside of the music festival’s main entrance so anyone that wants to come look at the cars can do so for free. The car show is 11am to 4pm (awards at 3:30pm). Edgewater Park is located at 600 Behrens Millet Road. For more information, call Reid Harlow at 360-202-0884 or Dave Clark at 360-853-6923.

It’s All Greek To Me

by Marla Bronstein I have attended Bellingham’s Greek Festival at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church many times since it began almost 30 years ago. I plan to make it again at least twice this year at some point during its four day run from September 7 through 10. More than 30,000 people participate in and visit this Whatcom/ Skagit/Island Counties community festival each year for food and culture. This free event runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11am-9pm, and Sunday from 11am-8pm. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be Greek to thoroughly enjoy yourself. In addition to the Greek members of the church, there are also members who are Arabic, Russian, Serbian and Ethiopian who participate, making the festival truly multicultural. Returning visitors as well as those going to the festival for the first time will be treated to wonderful music, Greek dancing, tours, and delicious home-style Greek food and beverages. For the second year in a row, there will be an interactive children’s area with a bounce house and other games for the young and young-at-heart. Festival Committee member Brooksana Raney also hinted at a special item that may be up for raffle, so be sure and check that out on your arrival. On Saturday and Sunday, guests

Whale Rider – On the east coast of New

Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs have always been the first-born and male. Many generations later, the contemporary tale revolves around a young mother whose male newborn twin dies in childbirth. Her young husband flees New Zealand in grief, leaving grandparents to raise the sole survivor, a feisty little girl named Pai. It’s no wonder that her grandmother and the entire community love her, but alas, the grandfather she worships is too busy mourning the loss of the baby boy he expected would lead the tribe to better days. Showing Sat., Aug. 12 at 4pm at Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St., Bellingham). Admission is $1. More info: 360-738-0735 or www.pickfordfilmcenter.org.

The Northwest Washington Fair by Osa Hale State and county fairs are a staple of the American summer. The smell of fried food, the sound of music and laughter, the natural tones of farm animals, and the bright lights of the carnival, all weave a beautiful tapestry. Whether you are competing in an agricultural event, admiring the handiwork of your friends and neighbors, enjoying a comedic or musical performance, or riding the ferris wheel with your sweetheart, there’s truly something for everyone. Like many county fairs, the Northwest Washington Fair has been around for more than a century. Though it has grown considerably since a group of Lynden merchants and farmers decided to throw a street fair in 1909, it is still anchored to the region, inspired by its values. Education, entertainment, and celebration can all be found on the fairgrounds. Farm life is the heart and the life blood of the fair. Nestled in a lush valley next to the Nooksack River, Lynden has always been an agricultural gem in a state that is rich in agrarian treasures. At the Fair, FFA and 4-H livestock are displayed, and their owners or caretakers compete in various fields. Other local farm animals are showcased just so that visitors young and old can learn about and appreciate them. There are also exhibits of flowers, as well as canned and baked goods, taking advantage of the natural bounty grown each year across Whatcom County. In addition to agricultural displays, community members are encouraged to submit their best work in a variety of crafting and engineering. Works of photography, needlework, and even Legos are proudly featured. The Northwest Washington Fair does even more than celebrate the hard work

24

and talents of locals. A short stroll away from the livestock barns and the rotary building, flashing lights and delighted screams emanate from the fair’s amusement park. Roller coasters, a funhouse, fair games, and a ferris wheel; kids and children-at-heart will be delighted.

Need a break from the hours of carnival fun? Head over to the grandstand for live entertainment all week long. It all starts with a demolition derby on Monday, August 14. With an afternoon and an evening show, fairgoers have a chance to see giant cars and trucks battle for domination. The week ends with mustsee music and comedy, with performances by hard-rock legends Night Ranger (Thursday, August 17), American Idol winner Scotty McCreery (Friday, August 18), and hilarious comedian Gabriel Iglesias, aka ‘Fluffy’ (Saturday, August 19). Sandwiched between the demolition derby and the grandstand comedy & musical acts is the Lynden Professional
