The Nutcracker:

Northwest Ballet Theater, Fidalgo DanceWorks, and Skagit Valley Academy of Dance by Osa Hale Sugarplum fairies dance, toys come to life, and a young girl is whisked away to the Land of Sweets. The Nutcracker ballet has become an iconic performance, and Tchaikovsky’s well-known suites announce the arrival of the holiday season. This year, our local communities are hosts to three dazzling performances of The Nutcracker. Northwest Ballet Theater John Bishop, founder and artistic director of Northwest Ballet Theater, says he has been directing the Nutcracker since he began the academy fourteen years ago. This year, for the first time, his two daughters, Miye and Mija Bishop, will be staging and choreographing the performance. What can eager audiences expect when they attend the Northwest Ballet Theater’s Nutcracker? “Sublime tradition,” Bishop says. “Our Nutcracker is like the original version, based on the Russian ballet where it was first performed in Saint Petersburg,” Bishop says. The choreography isn’t the only thing that is coming straight from Tchaikovsky’s homeland. The ballet will feature backdrops painted in Russia, as well as tutus designed and made in New York City, Bishop says. Although the Ballet has in the past featured guest dancers from as far as Russia or Japan, Bishop says this year, he is proud to present a cast made up of his own company. “The choreography itself is very technical, demanding, but it is also very beautiful,” Bishop says. “We’ve been raising the bar every year to get to the point that we feel we are on par with a professional dance company.” December 7 and 8 (7:30pm) will find The Nutcracker at Lynden Christian High School. The show will be performed the following weekend, Dec. 14 & 15 (7:30pm) and 16 (2pm), at the Mount Baker Theatre. The final performance on Dec. 22 (7:30pm) and 23 (2pm) will be at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon.

Tickets range from $15 to $30, with discounts available for students, seniors, military members, and groups. Tickets for the theatre shows can be bought at their respective box offices, and entry to the high school performance can be purchased at either Northwest Ballet location, 1417 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham, or 321 Front St. in Lynden. Since it’s the only Nutcracker performance in Whatcom County, Bishop says, buying tickets early is advised.

Fidalgo DanceWorks Audience members who are lucky enough to see Fidalgo’s performance of The Nutcracker will be seeing more dance diversity than the piece usually includes, says Courtland Weaver, managing director. Whereas many companies are strictly focused on ballet-centered movement, Weaver says the beauty of this Nutcracker is the varied dance backgrounds of the choreographers.

“There is a lot of movement downward. Down and up and sideways. It is a lot freer than you would expect ballet to be.” Weaver says, explaining the influence of one choreographer’s training in modern dance. “You see quite a variety of styles throughout the evening.” Audiences excited for this departure from the norm can especially look forward to the party scene and the fight scene, which Weaver says will include a good deal of acting and stagecraft. Fidalgo’s The Nutcracker will be performed for the public in Brodniak Hall, at Anacortes High School. There will be one evening performance on December 8 at 7pm, and one matinee on December 9 at 3pm. Tickets, which will range from $12 for open seating to $17 for reserved seats, can be bought at the dance studio at 901 Third St. or at the high school on the day of the show.

Skagit Valley Academy of Dance As the Skagit Valley Academy of Dance prepares its twenty-third annual

performance of The Nutcracker, director Shelly Lowe-Whan says one of the most important challenges is to keep the ballet fresh. She accomplishes this by enlisting seven choreographers, all instructors at the academy. “We encourage each other, and we listen to each other,” Lowe-Whan said. “I am excited that we had to open up and take a bit of creative liberty.” Lowe-Whan explained that showcasing the talent of the students is a huge priority and inspiration. This is reflected in this year’s addition of a Snow King and Snow Princess to accompany the traditional role of the Snow Queen. Audience members looking forward to delightful surprises should be especially excited for the Court Jester number, which Lowe-Whan describes as “truly an acrobatic number.” Skagit Valley Academy of Dance does not focus on talent alone, however. The entire performance is the lovely result of a true community effort. “On any given Nutcracker, we have probably three or four complete families onstage, mothers and fathers and all,” Lowe-Whan said. This, she says, is the beauty of The Nutcracker. “It’s a story that anyone can relate to. It’s an easy story to follow. The show moves very fast, and it has become a family tradition.” Anyone interested in watching this funfilled tradition unfold will find the Academy’s performance at McIntyre Hall. There will be three shows: two evening performances on December 7 and 8 (7:30pm) and one matinee on December 9 (2pm). Tickets vary from $37 for box seats to $20 for regular seating. Lowe Whan emphasized how often the show sells out, so buying tickets in advance is always advised. Dream Big, Play Loud, and Party On! Theatre in Bellingham. It’s unusual for a city of our size to have a theatre that is renowned for its own productions as well as a host venue for traveling acts of all kinds. From theatrical to orchestral, from circus feats to juggling acts, Mount Baker Theatre’s 2012-2013 season has a little something for everyone. Rock of Ages just happens to be “Rock and comedy in perfect proportion!” according to Time Out.

by Laurel Larsen When my mom was teaching me to drive, the only radio station we could agree on was the oldies. I remember being blown away that she remembered all the lyrics as we both sang along shamelessly in the car. Now, 20 years later, the music that invokes that same sense of nostalgia and repressed memory in me are the songs of the 1980s. I’m not the only one, either. The Broadway hit Rock of Ages encompasses the MTV generation with acid wash jeans, big hair, and some of the most engaging hits of that decade. And it’s all coming to Mount Baker Theatre for one night only, January 16.

It’s a classic story: a small town girl comes to the big city in 1987, trying to make it as an actress in Hollywood. A love story develops as she meets rock stars along the way. The music tells as much of the story as the actors do, featuring the “tunes of 1980s favorites, including REO Speedwagon, Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Poison, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, Quaterflash, Asia, Damn Yankees and more,” said Kim Laskey, Deputy Director at MBT. Although the production was made into a successful movie with Julianne Hough and Tom Cruise just last year, the bigger story is that the musical was a success in theatres in LA before hitting it big on Broadway in 2009. It was up for five Tony Awards and it continues its popularity on Broadway and through the traveling show that’s coming to Bellingham.

Because the music is such an important part of the production, all the songs are performed live by an on-stage band, making the show feel as much like a hair band rock concert, as it is a theatrical production. “How the Slug Stole Solstice” – Holiday Entertainment for All Ages! by Meghan Thompson With the holidays fast approaching I find myself reminiscing on the many different holiday stories I learned as a child, the classics with memorable characters and moral lessons, from the awkwardly likeable Grinch, to Frosty the jubilant snowman, Rudolph the makeshift headlight, and as I got older, the creepy Jack Skellington. This year though, mark your calendars for an introduction, courtesy The Bellingham Children’s Theatre, to the newest holiday figurehead, Sally, a giant banana slug who’s so afraid of the dark that she’s willing to risk everything in hopes of

finding the sun and bringing it back early. Definitely a topic we’re familiar with this time of year here in the northwest with our 50+ shades of grey. “How the Slug Stole Solstice” is an entertaining and educational show, perfect for audiences ages 4-104, filled with rhyme, wit, and creatively costumed characters. The cast ranges in age from 990, and features a few local celebrities, including KAFE 104.1 Radio’s Dave Walker. Performances are at The Bellingham Children’s Theatre, located at 1412 Cornwall Ave., December 7-9 and 14-16, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm.

Holiday Port Festival Introduces New Themed Category in Gingerbread Contest – What makes Whatcom County unique and special? Community members are asked to answer that question as part of the new themed category, “Uniquely Whatcom,” in the 17th Annual Gingerbread House Contest. The new category is open to all ages and abilities, and is meant to compliment, rather than replace, the existing categories, which are based on age or group affiliation. That means anyone can enter any edible creation in one of the nine age-or-group categories, or opt to enter their edible creation in the themed category. The Gingerbread House Contest, part of the Holiday Port Festival, is free to enter and showcases edible structures of all kinds – not just houses – and first place in each category will receive a prize. The contest and festival are put on annually by the Port of Bellingham at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, 355 Harris Ave. Families, community groups and classrooms of school-age children have all made a tradition out of entering the gingerbread house contest every year. The event has also seen an increase in the number of business and non-profit organizations that participate every year. It allows bakers of all ages and abilities to let their creativity shine. Geoffrey Castle’s 3rd Annual Celtic Christmas Community Celebration:

A Homegrown Anacortes Favorite by Michelle Wallace Innovative electric violinist Geoffrey Castle is back in Anacortes for his annual free concert with a performing ensemble that just might blow your mind. Celtic dance trio The Gothard Sisters, Somar Macek of Heart by Heart, Rock Hall of Fame Nominee (and original bassist for Heart) Steve Fossen and more epitomize the diversity, versatility and pure energy of Castle’s live shows. And while Castle has performed throughout the world, this annual show in Anacortes is truly unique to him and those involved.

When I asked Puget Sound Productions’ Event Producer Linda Ann Lipke more about the show (which she and Castle have collaborated on from the start), she immediately recalled 2010’s tragic refinery fire in Anacortes. After community members lost their lives in the disaster, she told me, “I wanted to give back to the community in some way.” At about that same time in 2010, Castle had been working out the details of a Celtic Christmas show to correspond with the release of his first Christmas CD (Underhill’s Angels). While he and Lipke had collaborated on events and fundraisers for over a decade, Castle told me, “This Christmas show is, by far, the best idea we’ve ever had.” Once Lipke spoke with the Port of Anacortes, which generously secured a location in their Historic Transit Shed Events Center, the details needed to be worked out in full. Because of the economy, Lipke wanted to provide a free party, treats and beverages, and was able to do so with the help of the Anacortes Elks and Island Rental, as well as the Emblem Club. The first show was on, and it was a hit! This year will feature all the free goodies and treats that have been provided in previous years, with the addition of a no host beer garden at both the matinee and evening events. (Keep reading for show times!) And of course there will be a visit from Santa. Mac McDonald’s portrayal is a national favorite! Throughout Castle’s musical career, the virtuoso has pushed audiences to reconsider what the violin is capable of. He has performed with Spike Edney (Queen), Beth Quist (Cirque du Soleil), Eric Bazilian (The Hooters), T.J. Morris, who will be performing in this year’s show, and many more, including of course his core band with Darin Watkins and Eric Robert. Castle’s acclaimed albums have been, in a sense, supplements to his live shows, to which he brings intense energy and a spirit of outreach. Encouraging creativity and innovation at a young age is clearly one of his strong values; all proceeds from this

year’s event will benefit the Anacortes School District’s Rick Epting Scholarship for the After School Art Program. Established with donations from last year’s show, this scholarship provides more funding for the after school program so that more kids can have the opportunity to participate in the arts. A show like this is simply not possible without the support of sponsors, volunteers and donors. This year’s supporters include Shell Puget Sound Refinery, the Port of Anacortes, How it Works, the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, service organizations, local businesses and many dedicated volunteers. You can see this year’s show on Saturday, December 15 at a 4pm matinee for families and seniors, or at 7pm right after Anacortes’ Annual Christmas Boat Parade. Come to the Events Center (1st & Commercial Ave.) between shows at 5:30pm to see the Boat Parade for free! While admission is free, a Golden Circle Ticket ($25 suggested donation, available at www.BrownPaperTickets.com) will ensure great seats in the house. You can also make a tax-deductible donation at the door or bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or nonperishable food for the local food bank. But whatever you can contribute, make sure to bring yourself … and enjoy! “If you’ve never been to one of these concerts,” Castle intimated, “you really should try to make it this year. It’s special.” He then described the experience of sharing a free CD with a mother and daughter in need at last year’s show. “That little girl had the biggest smile I ever saw… That is what it’s all about. That moment. Right there. Lummi Gateway Center Blends Business, Culture, and Education by Joanna Nesbit The Lummi Gateway Center, located just off I-5 near Slater Rd., has experienced steady growth since opening last January. Organized under the Lummi Ventures Partnership and sponsored by the Lummi Nation Service Organization, the center is home to several businesses open to the public: Schelangen Seafood Market, Lummi Gateway Arts & Crafts, Lummi Gateway Café, and Tribal Images. Additionally, the center contains space for seven “incubator” businesses and provides business support and training to startup entrepreneurs, as well as trains workers in the onsite businesses. It also offers a cultural experience for the broader community. “The Gateway Center is a way to bring the community together to show what our artists and fishermen do and to educate the non-Lummi public about our history,” says Gateway Manager Scott Kinley. In December, the center will offer new events and expanded hours. The first three weekends of the month (Dec. 1, 8 and 15), 10am-6pm, it will host a

Coast Salish Winter Arts Festival featuring Lummi artists in the building’s multipurpose room. Here, Lummi’s history has been organized in a timeline of historical photographs and summary statements mounted on the walls for visitors. In addition, the public is invited to learn Native American weaving with Lummi Elder Ernestine Gensaw, who will teach cedar basket weaving on Dec. 1, 1-4pm, and how to make cattail fans on Dec. 15, 14pm. Drop-ins are welcome and weaving kits will be available for purchase. Also starting in December, the Gateway Café will expand its hours to begin serving breakfast. New hours are Monday through Friday, 7am-3pm. Saturday hours will remain 11am-2pm (closed Sundays). The center’s café offers daily specials and soups,

as well as seafood items and burgers. Primarily a take-out café, the restaurant has become a popular lunch stop for area businesses. Next door at the seafood market, visitors can purchase fresh seasonal seafood caught by fishers from Lummi and other regional tribes. You’ll find sockeye, king, or Coho salmon, depending on the season, as well as crab, oysters, clams, and specialty items. In the Arts and Crafts store, some 60 Lummi

As an example, Christian Jimmy, who is a recent graduate of Seattle’s Le Cordon Bleu culinary school, works as manager-intraining of the café, where he learns ordering, budgeting, setting a menu, and managing staff. artists sell their work on consignment, including prints, carvings, dream catchers, and woven items. The nearly 10,000 square foot LEEDcertified building also houses a room dedicated for large carving projects, as well as the incubator business spaces. The Tribal Images art store is an incubator business, and other businesses are in the works. “This is an opportunity for a hand up, not a hand out,” says Melanie Solomon, Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the center. “The Lummi Gateway Center is a stepping stone for small business development with the intent to grow into and then out of the Lummi Gateway Center, and branch out on their own after receiving the intensive support services that their business needs to thrive.”

According to Kinley, the center is the outcome of a community vision of economic vitality, educational support for small business, and cultural outreach. He says the center plans to begin hosting an artist of the month, a salmon barbecue sometime next year, as well as an event honoring the lifecycle of the salmon, all open to the public. Community Workshop Offered – My Health, My Choices is an advance care planning process that helps us, over the course of our lives, to understand, reflect upon and discuss goals, values and beliefs for end-of-life health care.
