Winter Art Camps (1701 Ellis St.) are a great way for children and teens to create quality artwork over the holiday break. 25th Annual Holiday Port Festival –

This is a free, family-friendly event held the weekend of December 4-6, 2015 at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal (555 Harris Ave.). The festival is open to the public Fri. from noon-8pm, Sat. & Sun. from 11am-5pm. This is the Port’s signature event for the community and includes: performances by local choirs, bands, and dancers; gingerbread house display; free cookies and hot apple cider; visit and take photos with Santa; horse-drawn wagon rides. Big News from The Sportsplex in Bellingham! The Sportsplex in Bellingham has a new ice-skating academy director. Her name is Keri Ferguson (pictured), and she has relocated to our community. Keri began skating at the age of four and a half, and has been involved with skating for over 30 years. Her competitive career is impressive, as she is a double gold medalist and former national competitor. But more important is her coaching career, which has produced nationally-ranked students who have gone on to become international coaches, dentists, a pharmacist and an air marshall. Keri feels very welcomed by the community, and looks forward to working with her great staff of coaches and guest coaches, and together growing the skating programs at the Sportsplex. Keri brings energy and joy, and wants to share this with the Bellingham Community. Come and take a spin around the ice and welcome her. The Bellingham Figure Skating Club (BFSC) will be producing their 18th Annual Christmas Show on Ice on Sat., Dec. 12 at 3:30pm & Sun., Dec. 13 at 1pm at the Sportsplex (1225 Civic Field Way). “The North Pole Express” tells the story of a magical train ride to the North Pole. Both BFSC skaters and new students from the Sportsplex Skating Academy will perform. One of Keri’s staff coaches, Karlyn Hungate, a senior at WWU, is the show director. It will be a wonderful production that involves both BFSC skaters and new students from the Sportsplex Skating Academy. Tickets are on sale now! ’Tis the Season: The Spirit of Christmas Arrives by Lighted Boat Parades by Deborah M. Bernard It’s been a weary, bleary, blowy day and you just can’t seem to capture that Christmas spirit. But then… The sun sets, and as you’re looking out over the ocean, what to your wondering eye should appear? A miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer…on the bow of a Christmas-lit boat! Yes, joyfully, the annual Christmas Boat Parade Season is upon us! Bellingham: Dec. 5, 5:30-8pm: This year, it’s a Charlie Brown Christmas Theme Award! The Lighted Boat Parade is an annual event sponsored by Bellingham Yacht Club in coordination with the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. Each year, boaters from all the area clubs decorate their boat to participate in the parade, which follows a route from Squalicum Harbor to the Bellingham Cruise Terminal along Boulevard Park. A review boat hosting VIPs is anchored near Star Rock Buoy. Afterwards, come to the Bellingham Yacht Club to warm up with some homemade hot soup and Christmas cheer and celebrate the holidays with friends, family, and lots of good conversation and some holiday songs! Skagit Valley Chorale’s 2015 Christmas Show Set in 1949 by Marla Bronstein Conductor Adam Burdick will present Skagit Valley Chorale’s Christmas performance in the setting of a 1940s radio show, using popular and classical arrangements originally performed by the famous bandleader Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians. Waring was a popular musician, bandleader, and radio and television personality, (as well as the patent owner of the Waring Blender.) Generations grew up listening to Waring’s Christmas Magic. For this performance, Burdick leased the arrangements from his archived collection, housed at Penn State University, which includes more than five thousand compositions that were collected during Waring’s 60-year career. The show pairs the Chorale with a big band, using Waring’s original orchestrations. Enter Vince Fejeran, the conductor of the 50+-year-old Skagit Community Band. The versatile Fejeran is currently principal trombonist with the Skagit Symphony and is a member of Skagit’s A’Town Big Band. He freelances with different pick-up jazz groups, teaches K-8 at Immaculate Conception Regional School, and conducts a jazz ensemble and teaches music theory, music appreciation and jazz history at Skagit Valley College. “O Antiphons!” – Vox Antiqua presents

“O Antiphons,” an intimate choral concert and Vesper service celebrating the Advent season. Britain’s National Theatre Live in Bellingham and Mount Vernon by Joanna Nesbit In 2009, London’s National Theatre Live series was launched to broadcast live performances of Britain’s best live theatre productions around the world for millions of people to view. Since then, some 20 performances from London’s National Theatre and, on occasion, other theatres in England, have been enjoyed by 3.5 million audience members in more than 1,100 theatres world-wide, including here in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. You can catch these top-shelf performances at the Lincoln Theatre (712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon) and at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St., Bellingham). With the 7-hour time difference between here and London, it’s difficult to broadcast in real time, so the local theatres record shows to broadcast them in the evening, and sometimes host a second showing as a Sunday matinee. In London, each play is filmed in front of a live theatre audience, with cameras positioned around the theatre to capture all angles and give film viewers the “best seat in the house” perspective. The Nutcracker… A Christmas Tradition by Deborah M. Bernard Christmas traditions resonate in our hearts and increase our holiday joy. The Nutcracker, the most beloved Christmas ballet of all times, made its debut a week before Christmas, 1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Generations have enjoyed the classic Christmas ballet. But residents of Whatcom and Skagit Counties do not have to brave the Seattle traffic to enjoy an incredible evening with The Nutcracker, thanks to the Bellinghambased Northwest Ballet Theater. John Bishop is the artistic director of the ballet company, now in its 17th year. And this is the 10th year that NBT will perform The Nutcracker at The Mount Baker Theatre. As always, John Bishop’s Nutcracker is the original version, as first presented to the world in 1892. “But it wasn’t always that way in Seattle. For 30 years Pacific Northwest Ballet performed the Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) version choreographed by Kent Stowell, which was quite different than the original. This year they are changing to George Balanchine’s version that is closer to the Mariinsky version. Sendak’s was fun, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice to see the original,” says Bishop. Bishop has danced in 20 major dance companies. He remembers dancing 35 days straight every Christmas season, performing The Nutcracker. He embraces the ballet tradition. “Classical ballet is the best road for any dancer,” Bishop says. “It’s the foundation for everything in dance. It creates artists for the future, not a jack-of-all-trades, but a classically trained dancer.” Bishop has taken two groups of students to the Kirov School of Ballet in St. Petersburg for training, to learn the grassroots of ballet, the proud tradition of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, the Bolshoi, and the New York City Ballet. “Ballet is the road less travelled,” Bishop says. “People are skipping the

basics and going straight into jazz, or hip hop, without learning the classical steps, which you can only receive from a comprehensive ballet program like ours.” “But, classical ballet is making a comeback. Here in Whatcom County, there is a ballet revival going on, and it’s now including young men,” Bishop says. “In Bellingham, there is a huge arts appreciation community. We are so happy that we can present this family tradition with ever-increasing excellence.” This year’s Nutcracker features two male leads, “split casting The Nutcracker, which is a very demanding role,” Bishop says. Henry Winslow, 17, BHS student, and Evyn Bartlett and James Innes, both 19 and both WWU students, will all dance in this year’s production. Hailey Forsberg, also 19, has danced in NBT productions for 10 years and dances the lead role of Clara for the first time this season. “We have four lead male dancers this year. All were accepted into the Summer Dance Lab in Walla Walla for the past two years. Our new roster of male dancers is technically strong. They take a partnering class every Wednesday in our large studio with our 16 company girls. It is quite an exciting class, and believe me, you won’t find anything like this around here. It is almost impossible to find that many male dancers in one place anywhere. It is awesome that we have not only serious young women, but also serious young men,” says Bishop.
