Jingle Bell Run/Walk

by Osa Hale The holiday season is a time of giving. Presents under the tree, acts of kindness for friends and strangers, and charity. The Jingle Bell Run is the perfect way for the community to come together in an activity that is fun, healthy, and charitable. For thirty years, the Northwest Region of the Arthritis Foundation has used this festive and athletic event as a way to raise money for people living with arthritis. Across the country, the foundation encourages people to be “Champions of Yes,” by saying yes to living life to the fullest and searching for a cure. Described by the foundation as “America’s #1 cause of disability,” arthritis affects one in four Americans: people of all ages, across all walks of life. It is fitting that all kinds of people from throughout the community come together to dress up, have fun, and support the search for a cure. The event is inclusive, and participants can choose between walking or running a 5K race or a mile-long route. There’s even a Kids Fun Run and a Dog Trot, so every single member of the family can get involved! In the past, there have been separate events in different counties, with Whatcom and Skagit each hosting their own race. However, this year the Arthritis Foundation has decided to combine those events in order to be mindful of their donors and maximize the money raised for the cause. Hence, the official 30th Annual Jingle Bell Run will take place in Bellingham, and “Champions of Yes” from the entire region are encouraged to participate. The Jingle Bell Run will take place on Dec. 9. Registration starts at 7am at Bellingham High School. The event kicks off with the Kids Fun Run at 8:30am, followed by a costume contest, and finally the main races. “Champions of Yes” are also invited to celebrate at the Jingle Warm Up Party on Dec. 5 from 5-7pm at the Bellingham

Training and Tennis Club. The evening will include appetizers, hot chocolate, beer and wine, as well as photos with Santa and carriage rides through Fairhaven. Participants who have pre-registered can also pick up their race packets. Photos courtesy of the Arthritis Foundation.

22nd Annual Holiday Port Festival –

The 22nd annual, free, family-friendly Holiday Port Festival takes place from noon-8pm Friday, Dec. 1, and Dec. 2 and 3, 11am-5pm at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal. The festival includes horse-drawn wagon rides around the historic Fairhaven district, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a fire truck display by the Bellingham Fire Department, art activities led by Allied Arts artists, and performances by more than 35 Whatcom County bands, orchestras, choirs, dancers, and other groups. The highlight of the festival is definitely the gingerbread creations made by participants of all ages, from family groups to experienced bakers. The optional theme for 2017 is Northwest Adventures, but bakers can choose any other of the 10 categories if they wish (family, youth, seniors, and more). Many of the entries are donated to a silent auction that runs throughout the festival. This year’s proceeds from the auction benefit Toys for Tots. Christmas in the Cabins – Linda Harkleroad, who coordinates Ferndale Heritage Society’s annual Olde-Fashioned Christmas, says the mission of the organization is “to educate the community on the history of Whatcom County.” Members don pioneer costumes to greet visitors of all ages to experience how our ancestors enjoyed the Christmas holidays in Pioneer Park’s historic 15 log cabins. The newest renovated cabin, the Van Buren, will be open for display this year, set up as Ferndale’s first bank. Things Heat Up and Cool Down in Birch Bay

by Justin Hawkinson Every New Year’s Eve, the forecast for Birch Bay includes a Ring of Fire and Hope at night and shivers the following day at the Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge. Both of these events are free to join, family friendly and provide participants with a sense of community and personal reflection. The horseshoe shaped suburb of Birch Bay has a twelve-year tradition of lighting up flares along the shoreline on New Years Eve. From Birch Bay Village to Point Whitehorn, about 1500 flares will be lit at the high tide line in a glowing show of unity December 31 at 7pm. Anyone can be a part of the spectacle by lighting their own flare or just standing together while the lights illuminate the area. This

NSEA and City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation in improving salmon habitat along Squalicum Creek by planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive vegetation on Sat., Dec. 2 from 9am-noon. • The next week we’ll work with private land owners by restoring the riparian zone along Squalicum Creek on Sat., Dec. 9 from 9am-noon. tradition was begun by local realtor Mike Kent and his wife Rose in 2005 with the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce. The event has become a celebration of the past year and hope for better times to come. “It’s a really great event,” said Mr. Kent. “People meet one another; over the years, it’s grown as a very unique New Years tradition.” Between 400 and 500 flares donated by the Kent family will be available starting around 5pm from the Birch Bay Visitor Center at 7900 Birch Bay Drive. In past years, the supplies have gone fast and around two thirds of the people have learned to bring their own. The 30-minute no-spike road flares can be purchased at several local stores including Hardware Sales and Northwest Safety. Participants should be in place anywhere along the bay with flares ready when the horn sounds at 7pm. Once all the flares light up, the crowd becomes a team, and the spectacle they create reminds them that they are part of something together. In the past, some people have taken photos and video clips, while others use the burn time to reflect on the past year and express hope for the future. The next morning another large crowd is expected at the same beach for the Birch Bay Polar Bear Plunge. More than six hundred people from all walks of life will come together and dip themselves in the January waters while a crowd of their supporters cheers them on. Some will plunge as a tribute to a loved one, or a resolution to live more boldly in the new

year. Other people come in groups and grow closer in sharing the experience... and perhaps a warm towel. For the past 35 years, Birch Bay has kept the tradition going, and this year is expected to be bigger than ever. Several of the swimmers plan to dress up in costume, and local businesses donate prizes for particular categories: best under 12, best individual costume and best group costume. Participating in this event is free and informal, but people are encouraged to register at the visitor center because they can get a free “I Took the Plunge” t-shirt. Registration can be completed online at birchbaychamber.com or at the visitor center beginning at 10am. The costume contest will be judged at 11:30am and at noon a horn will signal people to run into the bay. Additional t-shirts and sweatshirts can be purchased and mascot “Brrr the Bear” will be on hand to celebrate and pose for pictures. No prizes will be given for the length of time spent in the water.

Celebrate the Season Free Event in Anacortes – Sat., Dec. 2 will feature

afternoon entertainment by the Fidalgo Elementary School Choir; Wren & Della, a local juggling duo; plus other entertainment still in the works. On Sun., Dec. 3, the focus will be on gingerbread. Friday, December 8 at 7:30pm Each season for 32 years, Grammy Award-winning artists Eric Tingstad and Nancy Rumbel (pictured) have been home for the holidays creating a longstanding tradition with Northwest families. Whatcom Chorale Soars into 45th Season with Handel’s Messiah by Margaret Bikman Jeff Margolis joined the original founders of what is now Whatcom Chorale (originally the New Whatcom Choral Society) in 1973 and ventures that each member of the 90-member group might have, on the average, dozens of years of performance history. As such, he says that “Maestra Debbie Brown has at

her fingertips an instrument that is mature, rich, and resonant.” “The excitement this season is taking the familiar and the esoteric and presenting them as if they took no effort whatsoever,” he says. Yet, he adds, “Debbie knows that even ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ must be practiced seriously in order to make the music gorgeous.” Brown, in her 10th year as artistic director and conductor of the 90-member chorale, says she’s “delighted to challenge our singers with increasingly difficult music from many different genres.” She adds that she’s proud of their willingness to devote hours of study and practice. “This dedication has made it possible for us to tackle Broadway musicals, opera choruses, and the challenges presented by pinnacles of the classical choral tradition.” “Many of us arrive exhausted from work for our weekly rehearsal (more than two hours). By the end most of us are so energized that we leave bouncing out the door, and too jazzed to sleep for several hours after.” The Dec. 17 concert at the Church of the Assumption features Handel’s Messiah, a perennial favorite, accompanied by the Sinfonia, a group of 22 seasoned regional instrumentalists. Janet Oakley, who’s been singing in the Whatcom Chorale since 2002, says that the Church of the Assumption is a wonderful venue for the work. “I’ve always thought the sanctuary there was like a medieval French cathedral,” she says. The March concert will feature “Frostina,” Randall Thompson’s settings of poetry by Robert Frost; and Pietro Mascagni’s “Anthem for Spring.” Tenor Aaron McInnis, a senior at Bellingham High School, will join the chorale as a featured soloist in Haydn’s “Die Jahreszeiten” for that concert. He performed the role of Nathanaël in Pacific Northwest Opera’s recent production of “Les Contes D’Hoffman.” The June concert offers Bach motets, and the ridiculously funny PDQ Bach. Both concerts will be at the First Congregational Church of Bellingham. Renowned Bellingham artist Susan Bennerstrom, who has sung in the chorale for 41 years, created the art for the posters and programs for the group. “During the summer, I gather together a bunch of photos of paintings that I think are musical in some way, and get together with Deb and a committee, and we study the year’s concert repertoires, come up with themes, then find paintings that ‘speak’ to the themes. nor are the paintings we choose necessarily recent; sometimes they are from years ago. I’m usually listening to music while I’m painting, and I know beyond a doubt that what I’m listening to enters the paintings.” Also, the chorale will perform a commissioned composition by Bellingham’s Scott Henderson, “Thrush of Winter,” at the Dec. 10 concert with Whatcom Symphony Orchestra at Mount Baker Theatre. It’s the third piece that he has composed for the chorale. “I found this remarkable 1902 sonnet by the British poet Edmond Holmes in a collection of poems and essays about winter,” says Henderson. “It was about the beauty of nature, the transforming power of music, and the spirit of hope and renewal. Amahl and the Night Visitors– Starry
