Groundbreaking Musical at the Walton by Christopher Key If American Musical Theatre can be said to have grown up in the latter part of the 20th century, Stephen Sondheim’s Company must be recognized as one of the compelling forces in that maturation process. Sondheim himself put it this way: “Broadway theatre has been for many years supported by upper-middle-class people with upper-middle-class problems. These people really want to escape that world when they go to the theatre, and then here we are with Company talking about how we’re going to bring it right back in their faces.” Company also broke new ground by being based on a series of vignettes rather than a clearly delineated plot.

The lead role of Robert will be played by Zachary James Harrison. Zach is an Equity Actor in New York City. His last Bellingham performance was in the Mount Baker Theatre repertory production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor and anti-hero Robert contemplates his unmarried state. In vignette after vignette, Robert makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl

who’s going to marry someone else), and Marta (the “peculiar” one), as well as “those good and crazy people,” his married friends. Company is a sophisticated look at modern relationships. The energetic score contains many of Sondheim’s best-known songs, including “You Could Drive a Person Crazy,” “Side by Side by Side,” and “Being Alive.” Mount Baker Theatre’s Winter Rep series is now in its third year and has established itself as equally successful as its parent Summer Rep. Producing Director Mark Kuntz has amply demonstrated that his formula of combining professional and local talent is a winner. One of the pros Kuntz recruited for this production is director Liisa Ivary. Her acting credits include seven seasons at the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, along with work at the Utah, Colorado and Alabama Shakespeare festivals. Directing credits include Macbeth, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls and Annie. Ivary is an accomplished choreographer, a member of the American Society of Fight Directors and (in her spare time) is a Certified Personal Trainer. “I believe the show will be a compelling, entertaining and worthwhile tragicomedy about ‘Being Alive,’ that is, a fairly cleareyed look at men and women, marriage and love,” Ivary said. “I hope to make a safe place for actors to tell Bobby’s story and take their journey in a fearless and funny way, and do justice to the great Steven Sondheim. I’m glad to have Mark, who is used to this condensed rehearsal process and has given me terrific help in getting up to speed.” That “condensed rehearsal process” involves ten 18-hour days that only the strong survive. By comparison, most community theatre musicals involve an eight-to-ten week rehearsal schedule. Kuntz’s formula may be grueling, but there’s no quarreling with the results.

Caroline Van Hemert and Patrick Farrell did just that. They will be presenting their awe-inspiring multimedia presentation, “Northern Limits,” an account of this epic adventure, at Backcountry Essentials on Wednesday, February 13 at 7pm. “Northern Limits” tells the story of this 4,000-mile human-powered journey from Bellingham to the Chukchi Sea in Arctic Alaska undertaken by Van Hemert and Farrell in 2012 – by rowboat, ski, pack-raft, foot, and canoe. This extraordinary journey followed a road-less, trail-less route through some of the most spectacular wild landscapes in North America… all in six months and all under human power. Learn about their adventures, see great footage of wild times and wild critters, and hear stories about the trials and triumphs of this epic journey. Van Hemert and Farrell have been touring with “Northern Limits” and their Bellingham show will be of special significance for the duo, who both attended Western Washington University. “After having lived in Bellingham,” Van Hemert says, “we know what a great outdoor/skiing/climbing/boating community it is! “We’ve been invited to speak at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival in mid-February and hoped to make a trip to Bellingham during the same time. “We’ve had great reception from folks interested in learning about our combined rowing/skiing/pack-rafting/hiking adventure and the incredibly wild lands we explored,” Van Hemert says. “I’m a biologist, so I also love to share what we learned in terms of ecology and wildlife.”

Whatcom County Home & Garden Show announces 1st Annual Paint Chip Poetry Contest – This idea marries the names on paint chips with the emotions and memories evoked by color to inspire poetry about the home or garden. The contest is open to Whatcom County students in grades 6-12. Students are encouraged to create an original poem inspired by the names found on paint chips. They may use either a single color name, a collection of paint chips they purposely or randomly put together or a palette of colors. The poems can be illustrated using the paint chips. Highland Dancing Championship Coming to Bellingham by Joanna Nesbit If you’ve never had the opportunity to watch Scottish dancing, this month brings a prestigious championship event to Bellingham that should be fun for kids and adults alike. The Celtic Arts Foundation, in partnership with Clan Heather Dancers, presents the Celtic Arts Championship and Highland Dancing Competition at Whatcom Community College’s Syre Center on Saturday, February 16, 9am to 5pm. From 9-11am, the competition features primary, beginner, novice, and intermediate divisions with children as young as age 4 performing the Highland Fling and Sword Dance. The premier division, the highest level of competition, begins at 11am, and includes the Championship Highland dances (Sword Dance, Seann Triubhas, Highland Fling, and Full Tulloch), followed by Scottish national dances and the Sailor’s Hornpipe and Irish Jig. Although the premier division usually includes experienced youth, teen, and adult dancers, some children as young as 8 have enough expertise to perform in the division. The young competitors, along with the costumes and pageantry of the dances, make Scottish dancing appealing to all ages. Dance Competition Coordinator Heather Richendrfer is excited to introduce area residents and visitors to championshiplevel competition. Owner and director of Clan Heather Dancers, she has taught Highland dancing for 38 years to all ages from 2 to adult. She says many residents don’t realize competitive dance events are held year-round beyond the Highland Games summer events. In October, Clan Heather Dancers presented the Reel Competition at WCC, the first Scottish dance competition to be held in Bellingham in more than 30 years. The Reel Competition and the Highland Dance Championship have both been hosted around the region but not in Bellingham until now. “It’s quite a process to host a championship event,” says Richendrfer. “We have a world-wide governing body of Highland dance, and you have to hold a competition for three years before you can apply to have a championship.” In recent years, this particular championship was held

in Anacortes, but to move it to Bellingham Richendrfer had to reapply. A championship is prestigious, with money prizes and awards for the dancers. Richendrfer says this championship will draw competitors from Canada, Oregon, Washington, and California. Highland dancing is an elite, technical, and competitive dance form, and dancers travel the world to compete. Highland dancing involves complicated step patterns and in a championship event, dancers are judged on their execution of the steps, the correct sequence, timing, presentation, and expression. If a dancer executes the wrong order of steps, he/she is disqualified. The dancing requires stamina and arm and leg strength, and has been recognized as a sport by the Sport Council of Scotland. Costumes consist of tartan kilts for the Highland dances for both male and female dancers; for the Scottish national dances, women wear flowing skirts and vests. The dances have ancient roots, some of them dating back to the 1400s, and each has an underlying story. The Sword Dance, for example, was performed on the eve of battle, and if the dancer didn’t touch the crossed swords, it was considered a good omen. The Highland Fling is said to be a dance of triumph at the end of battle. The Sailor’s Hornpipe mimics the movements of a sailor on a moving ship, while the Irish Jig depicts a woman scolding her husband (if danced by a woman) or a man scolding a washerwoman for shrinking his leather breeches. “Hello, my name is You” – Kuntz and Company, a non-profit dance/theatre company directed by Pam Kuntz, presents “Hello, my name is You,” a dance/theatre piece about Asperger’s. “Hello” shares the life of Cooper, a 28-year-old Bellingham resident who has Asperger’s. The artists of Kuntz and Company perform alongside Cooper illustrating the various facets of her life with this Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ten Days of Dialogue: The 13th Annual Bellingham Human by Michelle Wallace Mark your calendars for the opening night of the 13th Annual Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival (BHRFF) on Thursday, February 21. What started in 2001 as a collaboration between the Pickford Film Center and local Amnesty International chapter has now grown into a yearly effort to gather Bellingham residents in a discussion about global issues and real action. The festival kicks off with Beth and George Gage’s “Bidder 70,” a documentary about the outbidding of corporate oil and gas giants by university student Tim DeChristopher. The Pickford will give two free screenings (7 & 9pm), with a silent auction that evening. Opening night will be followed by nine consecutive days of free film viewings hosted at various venues across town. Festival volunteers have selected this year’s major themes based on audience suggestions; they include environment, education, indigenous rights, international conflict, and efforts for activism. “Genetic Roulette” is an environmentally themed film that volunteer Angela Rose is especially excited for. As she explains, “[in] our food supply, both locally and nationally and in a few other countries, Monsanto and the pesticide Roundup - [and] what they’re doing with genetically modified seeds and food - [is] creating pure havoc.” You can see this documentary at the Pickford at noon on February 23. Another film that’s garnering a lot of attention is “Precious Knowledge” by Ari Palos, about the controversial ethnic studies program at Tucson High School. “[This program] was very successful in cutting the dropout rate among the students,” festival

volunteer Ross Marquardt says. The film will be shown at Bellingham High School on February 26 (7pm). This year’s program is full of recent productions. In fact, “Within the Eye of the Storm” – the story of two former soldiers of Israel and Palestine united by a parallel tragedy – will celebrate its West Coast Premiere with BHRFF on February 23 (7pm at First Congregational Church of Bellingham). Volunteer Colleen Curtis calls it “a very moving film.” Selected from over fifty candidates, this year’s films also include “Delicious Peace Grows in a Ugandan Coffee Bean” (documenting the formation of the Delicious Peace Coffee Cooperative), “Peace Out” (looking at energy demands), “The Thick Dark Fog” (recounting trauma at Indian boarding schools) and several more. Rights Film Festival Begins volunteers, some of whom have been involved from the very start. These volunteers have organized each showing and researched information about taking action. From its early days twelve years ago to this year’s multi-venue event, the Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival has grown with the support of volunteers, individuals and other local sponsors – and last year’s attendance was over two thousand.

Madness, Scottish Style Skagit Opera brings Lucia by Christopher Key Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the most-produced operas of all time, in part due to the heroine’s epic descent into madness. Although written in Italian, it is based on a story by Sir Walter Scott and set in the land of my ancestors. I can assure you that no one does madness like the Scots, with or without single-malt. The title role has always been considered a showpiece for coloraturas and, indeed, was the role that catapulted Dame Joan Sutherland to superstardom. Lucia is the quintessential melodrama of a woman used as a pawn in a dynastic struggle for power. Having fallen in love with the son of her clan’s sworn enemy, Lucia is tricked by her villainous brother into giving him up and forced to marry the scion of a powerful family, setting into motion a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. Skagit Opera, which presents productions that would be the envy of much larger companies, is bringing Lucia to the acoustically astounding McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon for four performances, February 8, 10, 15 and 17. The stage director is Erich Parce, who brings three decades of experience as an international opera singer to his staging. Music director

will be Franz Vote, who has conducted Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera and was last heard in Seattle when he conducted Wagner’s Ring in 2001 for the Seattle Opera. The production is designed and produced by Mitchell Kahn, his fourth since becoming general director in 2011. The fiendishly difficult role of Lucia will be sung by two-time Northwest Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council finalist, Megan Chenovick. A Montana native, Chenovick came to the Northwest to pursue her B.A. in Music & Theatre at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Edgardo, Lucia’s ill-fated lover, will be sung by Seattle Opera tenor Marcus Shelton. Shelton has been seen regularly around the Northwest with Opera Idaho, Tacoma Opera, Spokane Opera, and Spokane Symphony, among others. Skagit Opera regulars will immediately recognize Yuseok Oh, the evil Scarpia in last season’s Tosca and Tonio in Pagliacci earlier this season. This time, he plays the villainous brother, Enrico. Lucia premiered in 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. It was a time when several factors led to the height of Donizetti’s reputation as a composer of opera. Gioachino Rossini had recently retired and Vincenzo Bellini had died shortly before the premiere of Lucia leaving

Donizetti as “the sole reigning genius of Italian opera.” For the second year, Skagit Opera will host a gala preperformance Megan Chenovick dinner on opening night, February 8, and a postperformance dinner after the final matinee on February 17. Jake Shimabukuro to perform in Bellingham Renowned ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro will appear in concert at Western Washington University’s PAC Mainstage on Fri., Feb. 8 at 8pm. This solo show, presented by UpWest Arts, marks Jake’s first appearance in Bellingham in two years. It’s rare for a young musician to earn comparisons to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. It’s even harder to find an artist who has entirely redefined an instrument by his early thirties. The Whatcom Symphony Presents: Sarah Chang Returns! On Sunday, March 3, at 3pm the WSO is thrilled to welcome back international superstar violinist Sarah Chang. Recipient at age 18 of the rarely-bestowed Avery Fisher Prize, The New York Times has described Sarah Chang as “….a wonder….Her gifts are at a level so removed from the rest of us that all we can do is feel the appropriate awe and then wonder on the mysteries of nature.” Her 2009 sold-out performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto left the WSO audience spellbound. How fortunate we are that she has chosen to return to Bellingham! She brings with her a dazzling suite from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story arranged just for her by noted Hollywood composer David Newman. This concert will be conducted by the third of our Music Director finalists, David Alexander Rahbee. Maestro Rahbee is a violinist and distinguished conductor, having studied at Indiana University and the New England Conservatory.
