WWU CFPA Unmasked: New Year & New Traditions by Meghan Thompson Over the past year, much has changed within the WWU College of Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA). The current special event leadership team – the Dean and Special Events Manager – both assumed their present posts within weeks of each other in August of 2013, bringing with them a fresh set of eyes, and healthy interest in how best to achieve the goals of the annual Masked Ball: raise community awareness, generate funds for special projects and scholarships, and build meaningful relationships between the students, faculty, alumni, and community supporters. That being said, this year, instead of hosting one grand event, the Masked Ball, there are three amazing events being offered, all unique opportunities to engage in different art forms, build meaningful relationships with the artists, and be involved in supporting the work of the CFPA. In February, Sanford-Hill Series presents a master class, performance, and champagne/dessert reception with Jonathan Biss, a pianist, teacher and writer based in New York City. April brings Benjamin Britten’s Opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream, presented by the Department of Music in conjunction with the Department of Theatre and Dance. Activities will include backstage tours, an Après Opera hosted dinner, and of course the performance itself. And, in May, the Department of Art presents The Senior Art The Sanford-Hill Piano Series will present Show and Auction, complete with private viewing and a hosted American pianist reception, as well as a silent auction of some of the pieces, and Jonathan Biss in concert curator-led tours. on Fri., Feb. 14 at Availability for all events is limited. Hearts For Housing: A Romantic Evening for a Worthy Cause by Osa Hale Lydia Place has been working to end homelessness in Whatcom County since 1989. It began as a transitional home for women and children, and remains focused on getting families into homes. On Saturday, February 8, the community will have a chance to contribute to the work Lydia Place is doing for homeless families, and enjoy an enchanted evening of food, music, drinks and a double auction.

In celebration of 25 years of helping homeless families get back on their feet and establish permanent residency, Lydia Place is holding Hearts for Housing, an auction and gala that will raise money for the non-profit. It will be the organization’s fourteenth auction. The event will be drawing inspiration from Valentine’s Day for its theme. “Lydia Place in itself is inspired by and supported by an outpouring of love from

our community,” explained Shultzie Willows, the development and outreach director. In the spirit of love, the gala will feature a jazz reception with Bar Tabac, Valentine’s Day cocktails, and a seasonally-themed meal. There will be a rose exchange, during which guests can buy a rose and have it delivered to someone else at the gala. Even the auctions will feature items and trips that have been selected with a romantic eye. The silent auction will include a cantina dinner for two plus an hour-long massage donated by the Silver Reef Hotel Casino and Spa, coffee for a year at Avellino Espresso, a bike from Kulshan Cycles, and many other prizes. The live auction ups the ante, with a San Juan romance package, a Semiahmoo getaway, and a LaConner love trip. Along with the romantic getaways, guests can bid on lunch with Mayor Kelli Linville and hot-ticket items and packages, ranging from photography services and distillery tours to a week stay at a Maui condo. The gala will feature some of the best of Bellingham. The evening will be emceed by Shannon Day, and the auctioneer of the evening will be Dan Johnson, of Johnson Towing, Inc. There will also be a mayoral letter reading. Then there are the sponsors; a nearly endless list of local businesses and financial institutions that have pledged their support for the event. The event will begin at 5:30pm, with the silent auction and a champagne social hour. This will be followed by dinner, the mayoral proclamation, a story shared by one of Lydia Place’s clients, and finally, the live auction. Tickets to the gala are $60 each, and can be reserved on the Lydia Place website (www.lydiaplace.org), or by Entertainment News Northwest ~ February 2014

calling the organization’s business office at 360-671-7663. While part of the ticket price will cover the guest’s meal, more than half of the fee goes directly to Lydia Place, to support the programs and services it provides. Lydia Place helps nearly 200 families transition from homelessness to sustained independence each year. This is done through the non-profit’s original Transitional Housing Program, as well as the Whatcom Homeless Service Partnership, the Supportive Service Program, and the Emergency House, all of which are now operated by Lydia Place. The work done for these families is supported entirely by public, private, and community donations and support. Photos by Emily OConnor.

Experience the thrill of a British stage production from the comfort of your local theatre. Mount Vernon’s historic Lincoln Theatre joins cinemas worldwide for a live broadcast of War Horse from London’s West End on February 27. War Horse, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, was adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford and originally appeared on stage at the National Theatre in 2007 and has since become an international hit. From NT Live: “War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of the First World War in France [and is] filled with stirring music and songs.” Central and unique to the production is the use of life-sized horse puppets created by Handspring Puppet Company in South Africa, which bring the galloping creatures to life in an astonishing manner. National Theatre Live launched in 2009. They have since broadcast over 20 productions from their stage in London to cinemas around the world. The productions are performed in front of a live audience and broadcast without delay to other areas in Europe. Theatres around the world are then able to broadcast “as live” according to local time zones. 1.5 million people in 500 venues around the world have viewed broadcasts. The historic Lincoln Theatre strives to entertain, inform and inspire our diverse community through cinema, live performance and educational programs. NT Live presents War Horse shows Thursday, Feb. 27, 7:30pm and again Sunday, March 16, 2pm. Ticket prices are $15 general, $13 seniors, $11 students. Lincoln Theatre members receive a $2 discount. 14th Annual Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival by Joanna Nesbit Natural gas fracking involves injecting water, sand, and chemicals into the ground at high pressures to fracture underground shale and release the natural gas and oil held inside. According to a 2012 study, most Americans don’t know what fracking is. Soon, area residents will have an opportunity to learn more about it, as well as a citizen grassroots movement standing up to it. Rooted Lands (http://rootedlands.com/), a documentary film about two poor, rural counties in New Mexico threatened by fracking, kicks off the 14th Annual Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival (BHRFF) at Pickford Film Center, 1318 Bay St., on Thursday, February 20. Two screenings will be held, 6:30pm and 9pm, with an opening reception between shows as well as an auction from 6:30-9pm. Held from February 20 to March 1 this year, BHRFF is a FREE film festival that brings local and global human rights issues to our community’s attention with a series of documentary films promoting awareness, dialogue, and action. It’s a unique opportunity to see films you might not otherwise have access to, says BHRFF organizer Ross Marquardt. BHRFF will present 19 films during daytime and evening time slots. Pickford Film Center and Fairhaven College anchor most evening events. Other venues include Bellingham Technical College, Whatcom Community College, Bellingham and Sehome High School libraries, Northwest Indian College, Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, First Congregational Church Bellingham, Deming Library and Lynden Library. Events also include facilitated post-film discussions with film directors, producers, or other experts, either in-person or Skyped. “This year’s top theme is the environment with an emphasis on water issues and how they relate to human rights issues,” says Marquardt. More than half the films feature environmental issues, many of them spotlighting the effects of resource extraction on human

life. Sub-themes include effects of conflict, as well as respect for individuals and women of the world. In addition to Rooted Lands, keynote environmental films include Troubled Water, a film exploring the successful response of Vancouver Island communities to the threat to their drinking water; Hot Water, an

female children are killed, abandoned, or aborted. Blackout follows African school children in Guinea’s capital city as they roam in search of light to study by. Not My Life explores the modern-day phenomenon of global human trafficking affecting millions of children, women, and men worldwide. Saving Face profiles female survivors of acid attacks in Pakistan, along with the Pakistani plastic surgeon whose work to restore their faces helps restore lives. Valentine Road unpacks the complicated and tragic death of a gender non-conforming gay teen in California who was shot by a schoolmate in 2008. The subject of gender nonconformity may feel particularly relevant to area teens. The rural villages of Mora and San Miguel Counties in New Mexico rise up and defend the richness of their culture, their heritage, their landscape and their place in Rooted Lands.

3rd Annual Jazz Series Supports New Library

Champain Fulton

by Stephanie Dethlefs Get your toes tappin’ and your fingers snappin’! For the third year, Friends of the Sudden Valley Library present a Jazz Series to support the new South Whatcom Library, scheduled to open this spring. The 2014 Jazz Series opens on April 26 with New York singer/pianist Champian Fulton. “She reminds me a lot of a locally-born artist who has gone on to great jazz fame, Diana Krall,” says series coordinator KC Sulkin, local resident and former jazz club owner. Internationallyknown Dan Brubeck, performing music written by his father Dave Brubeck with lyrics by his mother, poet Iola Brubeck, will follow Fulton’s performance. The Dan Brubeck Quartet will perform on June 7. The 2014 Series will again showcase inaugural performers from the WWU Jazz Faculty. Sulkin asked their pianist, Miles Black, to expand the group to an octet this year and play Black’s musical tributes to two of the great orchestras in jazz history, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. “They needed a singer, and I convinced them to perform with Greta Matassa, who has been a series favorite.” The Miles Black Octet with Greta Matassa will appear on September 27. For the final act in the series, on November 15, blues singer Josephine Howell will perform with saxophonist Kareem Kandi, who spends part of his time playing with the well-known band The Paperboys. “Both Josephine and Kareem walk the thin line between jazz and blues,” explains Sulkin. This will be the first time the two have worked together. When the discussion first began surrounding opening a library in Sudden Valley, Sulkin offered to coordinate a jazz series to help with the fundraising efforts. The 2012 inaugural concert, which averaged 175 audience members per concert, showcased Pearl Django, Greta Matassa and the WWU Jazz Faculty. In

Dan Brubeck

2013, the series averaged over 200 audience members per show, and was dedicated to female jazz and blues singers including Pearl Django, New York jazz singer/pianist Liala Biali, and blues singer Josephine Howell. Howell left audience members clamoring for more in 2013, and has been invited back again this year. “I have been told by many Bellingham jazz fans who come to the series that the Sudden Valley Concerts are the best jazz value in town,” says Sulkin. “[We try to] give the audience something new while bringing back acts that they’ve enjoyed in the past.” The 2012 and 2013 jazz series funded the construction of the South Whatcom Library, which resides in a portion of Barn 8 in the Sudden Valley recreation area. Proceeds from the 2014 shows and future jazz concerts will support programs for all ages and needs not provided by the WCLS. Sponsors of the 2014 jazz series include Alec Sulkin, underwriter for a portion of

all of the concert series; Boundary Bay Brewery, which has provided beer sales for the jazz concerts; and Village Books, which handles ticket sales. The South Whatcom Library is expected to open in early 2014. The construction and fundraising efforts were accomplished by thousands of hours of volunteer work by many community members. The Whatcom County Library System (WCLS) will now take over and provide library services. All concerts take place at 3pm at the Sudden Valley Dance Barn (Gate 2). Tickets are $70 for the four-concert series. Single concert tickets will be available after March 1. Tickets are available online at www.suddenvalleylibrary.org , in person at Village Books or the Sudden Valley Community Center or Administration Office (Gate 2), or by calling either K.C. at 360-671-1709, or Mary at 360-306-1800. Skagit Opera Celebrates Tenth— Die Fledermaus Flies at McIntyre by Christopher Key Johann Strauss may have been known as “The Waltz King,” but he also had something of a knack for operettas. Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is probably the most famous of these, and Skagit Opera will take on the rollicking farce at McIntyre Hall this month. Founded in 2003 by Ronald Wohl, who served as General Director until 2010, Skagit Opera has produced nine fulllength operas, three full-length operettas and one-act operas, three oratorios and numerous concerts and recitals. In 2011, Mitchell Kahn became General Director and cemented Skagit Opera’s reputation

as one of America’s premier small regional opera companies. The story centers on a ball given by Dr. Falke, (played by Skagit Opera newcomer Ryan Bede) who wants revenge on his friend Eisenstein (played by Stephen Rumph). Eisenstein, it seems, abandoned a drunken Falke in the town square last winter. Falke, at the time, was dressed like a bat, and came in for a good deal of ridicule upon being discovered by the townspeople the next morning. That explains how the operetta got its title. It doesn’t begin to explain the convoluted hijinks that surround the event, and that’s where the fun begins. Die Fledermaus premiered in 1874 in Vienna and almost immediately

Christina Kowalski and Anthony Kalil played the lead roles in Skagit Opera’s production of Puccini’s Tosca.

became a part of the standard repertoire. The libretto, by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée, is based on a German farce and a French vaudeville play. The production brings back two of Skagit Opera’s biggest stars: Christina Kowalski who starred as Tosca and

Megan Chenowick performed the lead role of Lucia, opposite Yuseok Oh, in Skagit Opera’s production of the Italian tragedy, Lucia di Lammermoor.

Madame Butterfly, and Megan Chenovick who starred in last season’s spectacular Lucia di Lammermoor. The all-star cast combines the Madame Butterfly cast (Kowalski, Stephen Rumph and Karl Reyes) and Lucia cast (Chenovick, Marcus Shelton and Ben Harris). “The music is intoxicating and effervescent,” Kahn said, “and the story of revenge, seduction and mistaken identities is a comic masterpiece. Elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written.” Skagit Opera will stick with the proven production team that staged the stellar performances of Rigoletto earlier this year. Kahn will provide a traditional production design, Erich Parce will provide stage direction and Bernard Kwiriam will conduct. One of the reasons behind the success of Skagit Opera is that it performs in English, making opera accessible to a much wider audience. Another factor is their chosen venue, the acoustically spectacular McIntyre Hall. Die Fledermaus performs on Fridays, February 28 and March 7 at 7:30pm and Sundays, March 2 and 9 at 3pm. Tickets are $25 to $59 and available by calling the McIntyre Hall box office at 360-4167727 ext. 2, toll-free 866-624-6897 ext. 2, or online at www.mcintyrehall.org.
