The Underpants Coming to Mount Baker Theatre

Pat Kachikis, Ian Bond and Jennifer A. Ewing perform the roles of Benjamin Cohen, Frank Versati and Louise Maske in the Mount Baker Theatre Winter Repertory production of The Underpants, Feb. 13 – March 1 at the Walton Theatre. Photo by Damian Vines Photography, http://damianvinesphotography.com.

by Joanna Nesbit First, there’s a pair of dropped bloomers at a parade – an event the audience never sees. Next, two men are so taken by the woman whose pantaloons slipped that they each plan campaigns to vie for her affections. Thus begins the farcical play, The Underpants, adapted by Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) from the original by Carl Sternheim. Sound a bit far-fetched? Bear in mind the comedy is set in 1910 Dusseldorf when the glimpse of an ankle was titillating. Louise and Theo Maske are a respectable, conservative German couple whose lives are undone by the underwear incident. Or at least Theo thinks so. It becomes clear Louise views the parade incident as no big deal, but her blowhard husband worries it could mean the end of his Civil Service career. Meanwhile, their advertisement for a boarder draws two responses, both men who witnessed the dropped pantaloons and are now besotted with Louise. Louise, in turn, realizes she has a certain sexy social power (and a brain) she hasn’t been capitalizing on, and her busybody spinster neighbor, Gertrude, encourages Louise to take advantage of these would-be suitors. Naturally, her husband is oblivious. Hilarity ensues in a fast-paced, 90-minute act – no intermission – that builds in momentum with physical humor and double entendre to a madcap ending that only Steve Martin could write. Part of what makes the play so funny

Under the direction of Seattle director Theresa Thuman, winner of the 2014 TPS Gregory Award for Theater of the Year, the production reprises some familiar faces. Chris Cariker, the lead in last year’s 39 Steps (directed by Thuman), is back as Theo Maske, while Jennifer Ewing, who also performed in 39 Steps, will play his pretty wife, Louise. Ian Bond handles the role of Frank Versoti, the Don Juan boarder, while Pat Kichikis plays Benjamin Cohen, the other boarder who is also a whiny hypochondriac. The nosy neighbor Gertrude is played by Akilah Williams, and John Parra plays Klinglehoff, an elderly man. The play will be performed in the Mount Baker Theatre’s 120-seat Walton Theatre, whose thrust configuration (sorry, no pun intended) with seating on three sides offers an intimate theater experience. The Underpants opens on Friday, February 13 and runs through Sunday, March 1. Tickets are $12.50-$25, available at the Mount Baker Theatre box office, 360-734-6080 or online at www.MountBakerTheatre.com.

in our modern sex-sells world, is the dated attitude about clothing. “We think of underwear as ‘barely there’ now, but at the time they were wearing big pantaloons and 18 layers of undergarments and this anachronistic world is funny to us, but to men at the time, seeing these undergarments drop to the ground was unbelievably erotic,” says Allison Terry, program manager at the Mount Baker Theatre. The play also provides a comment on gender roles in early 20th-century Germany. “Historically, Dusseldorf grew exponentially during this period and had one of the largest populations in Europe, but hadn’t expanded, so you had all these people living in very close quarters,” says Terry. “Sensuality was very contained. Couple that with everyone living close together, and there’s the tension of trying to keep feelings under wraps.”

have both played at McIntyre Hall to wildly appreciative crowds. Donovan repays the Sisters, when, in a moving speech, she asks the audience for donations to support the Sister’s retirement fund that is in great need of financial help. “This is one of the ways you can express your gratitude to the Sisters who have taught and formed you,” she says. To date, the international play has raised more than a million dollars. “The show, at heart, is a tribute to the rigorous Catholic education system and the dedication of the Sisters,” says Sister Katherine, Development Director of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Los Gatos. International Guitar Night by Osa Hale Music has long been a traditional way to bring warmth and happiness to the dreary winter days, and the Lincoln Theatre keeps up this tradition in many wonderful ways. A February highlight is the International Guitar Night, part of a widely acclaimed tour. The Lincoln Theatre has been hosting International Guitar Night for 15 years, says Director Roger Gietzen. “The honor of hosting different world-class guitarists each year at the Lincoln is thrilling,” Gietzen said. The featured guitarists are, indeed, world-class. There’s Diego Figueiredo, Andrew York, Maneli Jamal, and the founder of International Guitar Night, Brian Gore. Diego Figueiredo, who hails from Brazil, played many instruments as a child, finally settling on the guitar (electric and classical) as his focus. He played in nightclubs and theaters across Brazil, both as a solo act and with other notable musicians. Recently, he has been known to accompany the singer/songwriter Belchior and the French jazz artist Cyrille Aimée on their tours in Brazil and beyond. He has performed in more than 40 countries, bringing his jazz-classical-bossa nova fusion to fans across the globe. He will be bringing his amazing technique and evocative emotion to Mount Vernon, along with the other world-class talent of the evening. Andrew York is a Grammy-awardwinning classical guitar composer, who has played both as a solo artist and, notably, with the Los Angeles Guitar

Quartet. York is prolific as a composer, with more than 50 works published, and beloved as a performer, serenading audiences in concert and on his many solo recordings. His unique blend of classical and jazz will light up the Lincoln Theatre. Maneli Jamal is truly a multicultural musician. Having grown up in many different places and lived across five countries throughout his life, Jamal uses this nomadic and sometimes difficult experience to create powerful music. While Jamal’s style could be described as a mix of classical, flamenco, and percussive guitar technique, the music is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Entertainment News Northwest ~ February 2015

Audiences at the International Guitar Night will get the full experience, and will not be disappointed. The night would not be complete without its founder, Brian Gore. Gore is a literary guitarist, using themes from myths and modern tales in his acoustic guitar compositions and performances. The San Franciscan guitar poet first founded the International Guitar Night as a forum for top-notch guitarists and composers to share and perform. This meeting of the minds has grown into what is now a critically acclaimed tour, one that will be bringing some of the world’s finest guitar music into Mount Vernon on Saturday, February 28, at 8pm. Separately, these four artists are fantastic, but Gietzen says the music they create together is the true treat. “The dynamic of these diverse performers playing individually is pretty incredible, but their collaborations together as a group are spectacular, and what I look forward to most,” he said. Tickets are on sale now, available at the Lincoln Theatre box office, and seats can also be reserved by phone or online. Depending on seating, tickets range from $23 to $32 each, with a $2 discount available for Lincoln Theatre members. As the event is an annual favorite, those interested are encouraged to buy tickets in advance.
