Los Cenzontles at McIntyre Hall by Osa Hale This February, expand your musical taste by attending the anticipated Los Cenzontles show at McIntyre Hall. The music you hear will open your ears to the joys of Mexican regional folk music and expand your understanding of how country and rock & roll music can sound. Los Cenzontles takes their name from the Nahuatl word for “mockingbird.” Just as Nahuatl is a language used by a large swath of Uto-Aztecan people across Mexico, Los Cenzontles represents many Mexican music traditions. Audiences may recognize mariachi and banda influences, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Los Cenzontles takes inspiration from genres of Mexican folk music that reach across the country and through time. This is manifested through the instruments used: electric bass and drums blend with a myriad of traditional instruments, including jarana, vihuela, requinto, pandero, and quijada. The result of this musical and cultural fusion is a new and incredible sound. The musical experience that is Los Cenzontles would not be complete without its leading vocals, provided by the dynamic duo of Fabiola Trujillo and Lucina Rodriguez. Both Fabiola and Lucina were born in Mexico and moved to California as young children. Fabiola is fully focused on singing, while Lucina spreads her talent across vocals, jarana, guitar, percussion, zapateado, and dancing. They both were part of Los Cenzontles before it was a band, back when it was a youth music project created by Eugene Rodriguez as part of a California Arts Council Artist Residency. Eugene is still a key member of the group, a leader and guitar player who continues to inspire the best out of his fellow Cenzontles. Rounding out the core group is Emiliano Rodriguez, who plays accordion, guitar, and bass. The New York Times has said that Los Cenzontles “both honors and upends traditional Mexican music, tapping deep roots as it flowers into something completely new, and distinctly American.” This innovative genius is exactly why the music has something for everyone; fans of traditional Mexican music will be thrilled by the new direction taken by the band, and those with no background in the genre can sit back and let the entirely new experience wash over them. The passion that can be heard in Los Cenzontles’ live performances extends beyond the stage. Core members of the group also honor the youth music project that got the band started in the first place by maintaining the Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center in San Pablo, California. The Arts Center works with more than 150 students each week,

Los Cenzontles band members are Emiliano Rodriguez, Fabiola Trujillo, Lucina Rodriguez, and Eugene Rodriguez.

teaching musical, artistic, and culinary traditions in a beautiful act of cultural preservation. This can’t-miss musical event will be taking place on Friday, February 10 at 7:30pm at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. Tickets are $20, and reservations are strongly encouraged. You can call the McIntyre Hall box office at 360-416-7727 ext. 2 anytime Tuesday through Friday

between noon and 4pm. You can also visit their website at www.mcintyrehall.org. New Sudden Valley Jazz Series Devoted to Vocalists Starting its sixth full season, Sudden Valley Jazz will once again feature jazz vocalists. Unlike past tributes, which always featured female jazz singers, this series will feature both male and female singers in its concert presentations. The series kicks off on Saturday, March 18, featuring the different aspects of the Western Washington University jazz program. The opening act will be the current Western Jazz Orchestra, and will feature jazz singers, including Sage Romer and Kirk Roa with the full orchestra. The second half will feature trumpeter Kevin Woods, Assistant Professor of Music at WWU, and his quartet, which includes Cole Shuster on guitar, Greg Feingold on bass, and our old friend, Julian MacDonough on drums. The second concert, on Saturday April 22, features another old friend, jazz vocalist Greta Matassa backed by vibraphonist, Susan Pascal. Greta will be singing her favorite tunes and her husband, bassist Clipper Anderson, will sing his favorites. Although most of us are familiar with Greta’s work and love it, fewer Sudden Valley concert-goers have heard Clipper sing. Clipper is a great vocalist in this own right with the same great taste in songs. The third concert on Saturday, October 7, is a bit of an experiment. We are bringing back Josephine Howell, from Seattle, to perform her magic and we are pairing her with local blues and rock band, The Atlantics. Although the Atlantics used to play at the Dance Barn quite regularly in past years, they haven’t been back for quite a while. We hope this concert will have special appeal to the younger families who live in Sudden Valley as well as jazz fans. Finally, we end the series year with a brand new jazz singer for Sudden Valley, Portland’s Rebecca Kilgore. Once again, her taste in songs is superb. We’ve been trying to get Rebecca here for years, and we were finally able to book her for this year. The male vocalist is her drummer, Dave Tull, who is also a songwriter in the Dave Frishberg style. They’ll be appearing at the Dance Barn on Saturday, November 11. Tickets for individual concerts, all in support of the South Whatcom Library, are $20. You can purchase the entire series for $70 at Village Books, the YMCA desk at Sudden Valley, or online at www.fswl.org. For further information, contact K.C. Sulkin at 360-671-1709.

Poignant Family Drama at Bellingham Theatre Guild by Marla Bronstein It’s winter in Bellingham. For many theaters, that means dramas are in order. This season, Bellingham Theatre Guild (BTG) is bringing A Shayna Maidel to the stage with first-time director Dee Dee O’Connor at the helm. A Shayna Maidel is Yiddish for “a pretty girl.” Actors from ages 16 to 68 appear on stage in this play that takes place in New York, one week in 1946. Rayzel, aka Rose, portrayed by Kennedy Rainer, is woken up one night by her father, Mordechai, played by Robert Muzzy. Her sister, his other daughter, Lusia, played by Natasha

At left: Natasha McPhaden (Lusia) and Alexandra Farkas (Hanna) in rehearsal for A Shayna Maidel. This play is a powerful, haunting and deeply affecting portrait of a family in the aftermath of the Holocaust. At right: Rose is played by Kennedy Rainer and Robert Muzzy portrays her father, Mordechai.

McPhaden, has survived the Holocaust, has been liberated, and is expected to arrive in New York in a week to live with her family. Lusia goes in and out of memories, which allow us to see what her life was like before she came to America. They introduce us to those she left behind, who include her mother, played by Susan Duncan, her best friend Hanna, played by Alexandra Farkas, and her husband Duvid played by her real-life sweetheart, Brendan Francis. Muzzy says, “It’s about family and how we all connect with each other.” Dee Dee has been around BTG for a number of years, and has worked behind the scenes in just about every capacity with a number of seasoned directors, learning “how-to” build sets, stage manage, design lights and finally direct. O’Connor chose this script, or better to say, it chose her. “I have been interested in the Holocaust since I was in school. I have done a lot of reading and am very well versed in Holocaust history. I have been living with this play for about a year now, and it amazes me how it still affects me. I hope audiences will be affected by the family’s story.” Kennedy is one of two high school students in the cast. At the age of 17, she admits she was “shocked” that she won the role over the other talented women who auditioned. She, like Dee Dee, is also very passionate about the time period of the Holocaust. She wants audiences to come away with a better understanding of what families experienced when they were reunited or when they discovered that members of their families were lost. Natasha and Brendan both admit that being in a trusting relationship makes the physical part of their stage acting easier, even while portraying someone else’s love. The show is staffed by experienced personnel in the roles of Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Dramaturge, Sound, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers, all of whom had worked with Dee Dee in one

capacity or another on previous shows, and were glad to help her get this show up and running. The set is designed by David Cohn, and is based upon the show being about remembrance. To make the stage feel not quite “all there” and to make the stage look and feel slightly off kilter, it is raked—sloped up towards the back of the stage. Most of the actors have not acted on a raked stage before and it was initially challenging, but with each rehearsal, they manage with more confidence. Costumer Ginny Cohn says the challenge of this Set Designer David Cohn show was to reviews the plans with costume the same Construction Foreman Joe person at different Super. Note: Joe has been a life stages to show volunteer set builder at BTG for at least 30 years, and the passage of time, David has been the official both before and photographer for the Guild after the Holocaust. for almost 10 years. Regular BTG patrons may know Teri Grimes, Dee Dee’s Mentor/Assistant Director, who has helped with the creative eye while “still letting it be someone else’s play” she says. Dramaturge John Phillip made sure the set and props were all time period appropriate. Alan Shore provided expert dialect coaching. “It may be a little hard getting rid of the Yiddish accent,” Muzzy said with a chuckle. A Shayna Maidel runs January 27– February 17 at Bellingham Theatre Guild (1600 H Street ). Show times are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm. Admission is $14 adults, $12 seniors (62+) and students, and $8 children (12 and younger). For more information and tickets, call 360-733-1811 or visit www.bellinghamtheatreguild.com.

The Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival Raises Awareness of Social Justice Issues by Justin Hawkinson Every year new stories are told. Social injustice, racism, environmental destruction and sexual discrimination still occur. But there are also heroes, survivors and warriors who stand up for their fellow men. Each February, around two thousand people who feel passionately about these issues come together in Bellingham to share films showcasing such stories so our community can learn what’s happening and raise awareness of how to help. The Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival is a ten-day event where documentaries on social issues are featured and the community is

encouraged to learn and engage. Now entering its seventeenth year, BHRFF will screen more than two-dozen films February 16-25. The primary screening room is the auditorium at Fairhaven College, but a wide variety of venues around Bellingham and Whatcom County will host the festival. This year Western Washington University, Whatcom Museum, Bellingham Public Library, Whatcom Community College, Northwest Indian College and many other venues will host events. There will be no charge to attend any of the films due to the support of several dedicated sponsors. Parking at Fairhaven College will be free during the evenings and weekends of the festival. After most of the films a facilitator will lead a discussion about the concepts presented and the audience is encouraged to share and participate. Sometimes a person directly involved with the film or the story will join the discussion in person or via Skype and they can address audience questions about the issue. In addition to the discussions, audience

members can interact by filling out a feedback form that the committee will use to gauge interest and popularity of the film. The documentaries with the highest marks will be designated “Audience Award Winners.” “Film is a medium that helps people understand things in a really powerful way,” explained Colleen Curtis, a BHRFF board member. “We seek out quality films that are relevant (and) well made, that inform and educate people about important issues. What affects other people affects us all.” In addition to details on the current schedule, the films from past years are all cataloged on the website: http://bhrff.webs.com. Several of the films purchased by the BHRFF are ultimately donated to a public or university library. This way, the stories featured can live on beyond the festival itself. Also included in the website is a link for updates to the stories that the BHRFF has presented. This link allows festival attendees to follow current news stories about some of the people featured in the films. Festivities will kick off on February 16 at The Pickford Cinema with a reception, charity auction and two showings of Disobedience, an acclaimed film about people resisting the use of fossil fuels. Donations for the auction as well as financial support are still being sought. Volunteers and potential donors can reach the committee organizers through their website (www.bhrff.webs.com) or by sending a check to Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival, 114 W. Magnolia St., Ste. 400 - 146, Bellingham WA 98225. The group recently became incorporated as a non-profit, and their goal is to continue to expand with more films and more venues. Another film featured will be Chau, Beyond the Lines, an encouraging tale of a young Vietnamese artist who was crippled by Agent Orange. This film has won attention around the globe and was nominated for Best Documentary, Short Subject at the 88th Annual Academy Awards. In 2015 the Bellingham Mayor’s Office bestowed a Mayor’s Art Award to “the film festival and the outlet it provides to filmmakers in addressing challenging issues.” Amnesty International USA’s local group 270 was recognized nationally in 2014 for their financial and volunteer support of the festival and its promotion of human rights.

Romance the Night for Sight: A Perfect Valentine Date by Deborah M. Bernard Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. You want to share a memorable evening with your sweetie that is different, romantic, perhaps a bit retro… like dancing to the ultimate Elvis love songs: “Love Me Tender,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Unchained Melody.” Well, look no more! Bellingham Harborview Lions will be hosting Romance the Night for Sight on Saturday, February 11, from 6-9pm at the Bellingham VFW. They will have local musical entertainment, finger foods, trivia, and great silent auction baskets from local businesses. The dance floor will be open. It’s a fundraiser for Kids SIGHT, which will help local kids in Whatcom County. Dino Macris (pictured), a three-time champion Elvis Tribute Artist, is among the performers. He won the prestigious Heart of Elvis Award in 2014 and tours extensively with his Elvis Tribute Shows. “Yes, close your eyes, and you would believe that the one we all loved, Elvis, came back,” said Vicki Harnden, spokeswoman for the Harborview Lions. Also featured are the Travelin’ Light band doing jazz and blues, and danceable standards; and “The Singing Realtor from Keller Williams,” Annette Richardson, “and you never know, she might bring a Transaction with her!” said Vicki. “Last year was our first year at this fundraiser. The Bellingham Harborview Lions Club joined with Ferndale Lions Club on the project Kids’ SIGHT. If a child is checked between 6 months and 6 years, it can be determined if they have anything that could cause learning disabilities or illness later in life. It takes money to run this program. So that’s where Romance the Night for Sight came in. We were able to get Johnny Barnes, the last remaining member of legendary group, The Platters. He sang just as good as always,” said Vicki Harnden. “When Lions Club raises money for a charity, 100% goes to the cause.” Doors open at 5:30pm and the entry fee is $10 at the door. The VFW is located at 625 N. State Street. ALSO: Earn your Angel Wings while you eat on Feb. 15 from 11am-1am! Buffalo Wild Wings at Bellis Fair Mall will donate 10% of whatever you buy to the Bellingham Harborview Lions’ Club Sight and Hearing programs. Be sure to turn in your receipt as you leave. Eat early; eat often. Info: 360-510-7716 or lovethatbling2@yahoo.com. Vicki Harnden and Johnny Barnes.

Celebrating Outdoor Play at Recreation Northwest EXPO by Courtney Kendall Listed as one of Outside Magazine’s 16 adventure towns, Bellingham is no stranger to outdoor recreation. Biking, skiing, snowboarding, running, hiking, watersports . . . you name it and Bellingham has it. With all of the many outdoor opportunities Whatcom County has to offer, Recreation Northwest is putting together its 4th annual Recreation Northwest EXPO to showcase recreation industries, organizations, and new ways to get outside and play. The EXPO takes place Saturday, February 25 from 1-6pm at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal. This free, all-ages event will have 70 exhibitors on hand to answer questions, provide demos, and even offer door prizes. Exhibitors will include outdoor gear and equipment outfitters, stewardship associations, race organizers, outdoor activity organizations, and sports health professionals. The EXPO is a chance for attendees to come and sample all that Whatcom County has to offer and enjoy meeting local and regional outdoor enthusiasts. Recreation Northwest, a nonprofit, was co-founded by Todd Elsworth and April Claxton. “We built our mission around play,” Todd explains. The organization was initially created to lay a more solid foundation for the Bellingham Traverse, a multi-sport event that celebrates the journey of wild salmon and serves as a fundraising event for trail relocation projects in Fairhaven Park. Celebrating its fourth year, Recreation Northwest is now a vibrant organization devoted to promoting outdoor recreation through their Parkscriptions program, education and advocacy, and stewardship. The EXPO’s success in recent years has led it to its expansion from last year’s Depot Market Square location to this year’s location at the Bellingham Ferry Terminal. “We started small as an opportunity to create a forum for race directors,” says Todd. “We don’t have storefronts for the community to interact with us, so we needed a place to connect with people.” In time, the EXPO became a place for other

outdoor advocacy and stewardship programs to gain exposure, as well as gear manufacturers and recreation retailors. Organizations outside of Whatcom County have shown interest in the EXPO, and the larger space allows for larger exhibitors to attend. The EXPO, Todd explains, is the one opportunity statewide to interact with all these recreation industry professionals under one roof. Recreation Northwest has been recognized on a state and national level for taking on recreation as an economic strategy. In 2015 they commissioned a study on the economic contribution of outdoor recreation to Whatcom County. Over $500 million in annual revenue came from recreational businesses who also employed 3,728 people. For those interested in the recreation industry, the EXPO is also an excellent opportunity to network and meet potential mentors in the field. On Friday, February 24, Recreation Northwest hosts the Outdoor Recreation Summit. As a kickoff to the EXPO, the Summit was designed for those in the recreation industry. Now it is also a day of learning and sharing for those interested in entrepreneurial opportunities around recreation, including recreational tourism. Policy makers also benefit from the many speakers throughout the day. Jon Synder, Policy Advisor on Outdoor Recreation and Economic Development to Governor Jay Inslee will be speaking at the Summit.

Whether you are looking to get into the recreation industry, interested in checking out the latest gear and equipment, or just want to see what outdoor experiences Whatcom County has to offer, Recreation Northwest’s EXPO is the place to be. “We want to create community around Washington and help people find ways to join in,” says Todd.
