European Trumpet Sensation Tine Thing Helseth’s Debut West Coast Performance by Osa Hale The past year has been full of firsts for Norwegian trumpet sensation Tine Thing Helseth. She has made her orchestral debut with the Royal Philharmonic and the Munich Symphony, among others. Helseth also made her BBC Proms concerto debut with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The rising star will add another first to her list: her premiere West Coast performance, taking place in Bellingham, Washington.
Helseth will be performing at the Mount Baker Theatre on Sunday, February 9, at 3pm. Noel Evans, the interim marketing manager with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, said the orchestra was thrilled to have the opportunity to host Helseth. “We have not had a brass soloist in many, many years; we typically feature pianos and strings,” Evans said. “There are also not many women brass players. She is a wonderful trumpet player.” Evans noted that, although Helseth is a youthful 26 years old, she is establishing a great career and reputation in Europe. In addition to her quickly growing resume of prestigious performances, she has garnered a number of awards. Perhaps most notable is her place as the first classical artist to win the Newcomer of the Year Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian equivalent to the American Grammy Award). Helseth, who has been playing the trumpet since she was seven years old, is a dedicated musician. In addition to a flourishing solo career, she has formed tenThing (an all-female brass ensemble that explores ensemble playing and expanding brass repertoire) and the Tine
Thing Helseth Quintet or TTHQ (a jazz/ tango fusion band that plays an eclectic mix of music). With both of these groups and her own countless solo achievements, Helseth is a full-time trumpet success story. What is so enchanting about Helseth’s musical talent? Her sound is unique, and she possesses the ability to, as the London Evening Standard put it, “transform the brassy trumpet into something soft, supple and lyrical.” The program at the Mount Baker Theatre will include pieces by Sibelius and Verdi, as well as Stravinsky’s complete Firebird Suite. Helseth’s rendition of the Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutiunian should be particularly delightful. “The concerto is very spirited and upbeat, really a lot of fun,” Evans said. “I think the audience will really enjoy that.” Tickets for the program are available now at the Mount Baker Theatre box office, and can be bought in person or by calling 360-734-6080. They can also be purchased online at the theater’s website. Costs range from $12-$39. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to buy tickets early, as Evans said the performance is expected to sell out. For parents, grandparents, and mentors who are interested in bringing a younger guest, there is a take-a-teen ticket deal. As part of an effort to encourage musical education, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra is offering a free “Teen Ticket” (for students ages 12 through 17) with any adult ticket purchase.

The program will also include a lecture by composer and theorist Dr. Edward Rutschman, beginning at 2pm in the Mount Baker Theatre Encore Room. The lecture is free, but seating will be limited. Photo courtesy of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra.

Four more Photo by Grace Elliot. albums followed. A published poet, Ritchie’s most recent “release” is an anthology of poems and illustrations entitled Works On Paper, compiled from writing and pen and ink drawings accumulated during Ritchie’s long career as a traveling musician. After 19 years touring nationally, Ritchie returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2012, where he now makes his home in Bellingham. Bellingham Threshold Singers Offer a Class by Janis Walworth When I tell people that I sing for the critically ill and dying, I get reactions ranging from “How cool is that!” to “Oh, I could never do that!” or a quick change of subject. Many think it must be depressing work, but I, and the women I sing with, don’t find it at all depressing. “I always feel like I get more than I give,” says Nancy, one of our lead singers. “The gift goes both ways even though there might not be any verbal communication.” We are the Bellingham Threshold Singers, a group of volunteer women who go by threes or fours to bring songs of comfort to those at life’s threshold. We have our own songs written especially for these occasions, which we sing softly, unaccompanied by musical instruments. We offer our free service to people of any faith or no faith in the hospital, in care facilities, or at home. Our training includes examining our feelings about illness and dying, as well as how to deal with the range of emotions family members may go through at the death of a loved one. We memorize a repertoire of songs, learn to blend our voices, and practice loving intention by singing to each other. Some of us came to threshold singing after sitting with a parent or spouse as they were dying. “You can’t take care of people who have passed on, but you can

It was very uplifting singing together at rehearsal.” Best of all, though, is the possibility to make a difference in people’s lives – to

Films at The Pickford: Zatoichi Series
– Join us at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St., Bellingham) on Saturdays in January at 11am for three films in the Zatoichi Series, part of PFC’s Master of Japanese Cinema Series: “Zatoichi’s Flashing Sword,” Jan. 4; “Fight, Zatoichi, Fight,” Jan. 11; and “Adventures of Zatoichi,” Jan. 25. Admission is $8. • ”The Burmese Harp” – An Imperial Japanese Army regiment surrenders to British forces in Burma at the close of World War II and finds harmony through song. A private, thought to be dead, disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and stumbles upon spiritual enlightenment. Magnificently shot in hushed black and white, Kon Ichikawa’s “The Burmese Harp” is an eloquent meditation on beauty coexisting with death and remains one of Japanese cinema’s most overwhelming antiwar statements, both tender and brutal in its grappling with Japan’s wartime legacy. Join us for the film on Thurs., Jan. 9 at 5:45pm. Admission is $10. • Sundance Film Festival Shorts – A roller coaster mix of drama and comedy, the Sundance Film Festival Short Films program is a 93-minute collection of eight short films from the 2013 edition of the festival. Vibrant storytelling highlights the group, including fiction, documentary and animation, with five award-winners. With no rules, the short film serves as a proving ground for young filmmakers to make their mark, and for established filmmakers to take risks in story and style. Join us for the films on Fri., Jan. 17 at 6:30pm; Sat., Jan. 18 at 9pm; and Sun., Jan. 19 at noon. Admission is $10. • Rocket Sci-Fi Matinees – In “The Giant Gila Monster” most of the plot is given over to a group of hot-rod enthusiasts, headed by nice-guy Chace Winstead (Don Sullivan), who sometimes breaks into song. Before long, the titular gila monster, which is just that – a real gila monster – is lumbering about on
miniaturized sets terrorizing the community, killing at random, knocking over trains and barns, and in general making a nuisance of itself. Join us for the film on Sat., Jan. 18 at noon. Admission is $2. • ”Jewels: Live from the Bolshoi Ballet” – George Balanchine exquisitely choreographed “Jewels” in 1967 as three disparate parts, each with its own composer and striking beauty. The ballets serve as a tribute to the three cities of Paris, New York and St. Petersburg, all of which carved the elegance, aesthetic and style of Balanchine. Recently added to the Bolshoi repertoire, the dancers bring “a fascinating life” to this ballet that combines pure virtuosity, class, and elegance. Join us to view this filmed performance on Sun., Jan. 19 at 7pm. Admission is $20. • ITVS Community Cinema Series: “Las Marthas” – Dating from the aftermath of the SpanishAmerican War, the annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas, is unlike any other. “Las Marthas” follows two Mexican American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration. Join us for the film on Tues., Jan. 21 at 5:30pm. Free admission. • ”Symphony of the Soil” – Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, “Symphony of the Soil” is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance, soil. Filmed on four continents, featuring esteemed scientists and working farmers and ranchers, “Symphony of the Soil” is an intriguing presentation that
highlights possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet. Join us for the film on Wed., Jan. 22 at 6pm. Admission is $9. Presented by Transition Whatcom. • ”In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter” – Saul Leiter’s lessons reveal great wisdom but also an irascible, irrepressible personality. His brilliant photographs of mid-20th century America, especially his color work, are now considered some of the very best street photography ever produced. Saul recently passed on, but he lives on indelibly here and in his work. Join us for the film on Tues., Jan. 28 at 6:30pm. Admission is $10. More info: 360-6471300 or www.pickfordfilmcenter.org.

Whatcom READS! 2014: Cheryl Strayed’s Wild by Meghan Thompson
New Book Tells History of Mount Baker in Photos Arcadia Publishing has released Images of America: Mount Baker, a new book that traces the history of Mount Baker from its “discovery” by Captain George Vancouver to the modern era of snowboards and drive-through espresso stands. The book, by local authors John D’Onofrio and Todd Warger, features hundreds of historical photographs – many of them never before published – by such legendary photographers as Darius Kinsey, Bert Huntoon and Galen Biery. The book captures the rich and colorful history of the mountain; the madness of the Mount Baker Gold Rush, the rise of the logging industry, the bold adventures of explorers and early climbers seeking the glory of conquest, the ill-fated Mount Baker Lodge, the stranger-than-fiction story of the Mount Baker Marathon, the halcyon days of movie stars on the mountain, and the rise of the ski area. John D’Onofrio, publisher/editor of Adventures NW magazine and Todd Warger, director of The Mountain Runners film did extensive research to create a chronology of human activity on the mountain, cataloguing tales both inspiring and bizarre. The two were granted access to remarkable photo collections handed down from generation to generation. Some of these images are iconic and familiar, others have never been seen outside of the families that preserved them. D’Onofrio and Warger will be presenting a slide show of images from the book, sharing stories from the mountain, and signing books at Village Books, 1200 11th St., Bellingham, on Wed., Feb. 5 at 7pm. The event will also be broadcast on KMRE-LP 102.3 & KAVZ-LP 102.5. Free admission. More info: 360-671-2626, www.villagebooks.com.

Apocalypse Bellingham — Novel Brings Fresh Insights by Christopher Key Robert Slater is a Renaissance Man, by any measure. Actor, director, musician, composer and now, novelist. By day, he is a mildmannered teacher at Windward, Ferndale’s small choice high school. By night, he is an immensely talented writer who draws on his experience with alienated youth to produce a first novel that is truly mesmerizing. I say first because it’s promoted as a Deserted Lands novel, indicating that there will be more to come set in Slater’s imaginary universe. If All Is Silence is a forerunner for a series, then I say, “Bring it.” Slater has created a post-apocalyptic world that is inwardly and outwardly consistent by paying attention to the details. Lizzie, the anti-hero of this novel, is the tough chick with a heart of gold. She survives the pandemic apocalypse that wipes out 95 percent of the world’s population. Why? That may be revealed in future episodes. She captures the reader by being so human that you can’t help being sucked into her world. That world involves Bellingham, where the novel is set. I love reading novels that are set in my universe. Jim Lynch and David Guterson come to mind. Their evocation of this peculiar Fourth Corner of the nation always sucks me in because I know the territory. Slater characterizes All Is Silence as a Young Adult novel. Don’t be turned off by that label. I have come to realize that Young Adult is not so much about the target audience as it is about the characters in the novel. Slater, like J. K. Rowling and Suzanne Collins, writes about young people, but engages a wider audience, thereby furthering understanding of what it is like to be young in this difficult world. Yeah, I have put him into some pretty fast company here with my comparisons. Read the book and see if I am being hyperbolic. Signed pre-ordered copies are available at www.desertedlands.com. They will arrive the first full week in January.

New Exhibits open in January –
Timeless Treasures: Crazy Quilts: Each January, the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum (703 S. 2nd St.) starts the year with a selection of crazy quilts. The Crazy Quilting craze started around the 1880s when American quilters picked up needle

and thread to create these highly embellished quilts. While some Crazies might include fans or other recognizable patterns, the style often features random sized patches sewn onto a foundation fabric. • Out of the Blue: Surface Design by the SDA of Whidbey Island – The Museum hosts an exhibit on surface design, or the creative exploration of fiber and fabric. This one-of-a-kind art form blends many techniques, including collage, weaving, felting, beading, basketry, hand-dyed fabric and contemporary quilting in cutting-edge combinations. Each artist in the exhibit was challenged to literally or figuratively create artwork with “Out of the Blue” as its theme. • Creating Texture: Sue Spargo: Primarily a selftaught stitcher, quilter and artist, Sue Spargo is influenced by the beautiful, colorful work of primitive craft artists around the world. Born in Zambia and educated in South Africa, Spargo moved to England where she found inspiration in the stark contrast between England’s lush greens and Africa’s beige/browns. Now living in Ohio, her folk art style is rich with embroidery. • Join us for an afternoon reception on Sat., Jan. 11 from 1-4pm to meet the artists of two current exhibits: “Out of the Blue,” with members of the Surface Design Association of Whidbey Island and “Creating Textures” with folk art quilter Sue Spargo. The Surface Design members will be leading a tour from 1-2pm, and Sue Spargo will be leading a tour from 2-3pm. • The exhibits will be
open Jan. 11-March 23, Wed.-Sun., 11am-5pm. Admission is $7 and includes all exhibits. Info: 360-466-4288, kathleen@laconnerquilts.org or www.laconnerquilts.org.

Entertainment News NW Turns 10! by Stephanie Dethlefs Since 2004, Entertainment News NW has promoted the arts in Whatcom and Skagit counties. Theater, music, galleries, classes, events for all ages – you name it, we’ve shared it. ENNW is turning 10 and still going strong! ENNW founders Barb and Mark Fuller, Dorothy Tjoelker-Worthen and Carey Worthen first launched the publication because they saw a need for a high-quality publication devoted to the local arts. Each issue contains a handful of feature articles, a pull-out calendar of events, and an extensive list of offerings organized by categories. “We are blessed to live in an area that has an abundance of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts,” says Barb. Current publishing partners include the Fullers, Dorothy Tjoelker-Worthen, Gladys Crnich and Lynna Dunn Fuller. Current writers are Joanna Nesbit, Christopher Key, Lynna Dunn Fuller, Stephanie Dethlefs, Osa Hale and Meghan Thompson. The print publication is distributed monthly to nearly 200 businesses, libraries, and other pick-up points throughout Whatcom and Skagit counties. Of the 10,000 copies distributed each month, 90 to 95 percent of this free publication are picked up. Readers can also view the magazine online by visiting the website (www.ennw.info) and clicking on the cover of the current issue. Readers can hover their mouse over websites or emails within the magazine and click to visit that site. This tool works in the advertisements as well, providing advertisers an online presence at no additional advertising charge. In this time of transition and struggle for print publications, ENNW is persevering. The partners believe firmly in local and sustainable business, so they promote not only local events but also local businesses and print the publication locally with Lithtex NW. The number of pages in each issue varies based on the advertisements that month. “Our advertisers pay for the publication, and we are very grateful for their support,” says Barb. Business owners can find advertising rates and information at www.ennw.info. email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”

The Neighborhood Playhouse Presents Charlotte’s Web by Joanna Nesbit Those of us of a certain age will remember Paul Lynde’s snarky rendition of Templeton the gluttonous rat in the 1973 animated version of Charlotte’s Web. In fact, it’s hard not to hear his voice as you recall the movie.
Above: Hannah Reclam (Charlotte) and Rossner Gideon (Wilbur) talk about Charlotte’s miraculous web. At right: Ashley Van Curler, Musical Director, on the keyboard with accompanist Josh Grantham and Rossner Gideon (Wilbur) in the back.

Now you can create a new memory of Templeton – and no less funny, I predict. For the first two weekends in January, The Neighborhood Playhouse (TNP) presents the musical production of Charlotte’s Web for the whole family, performing at the Bellingham Theatre Guild on January 4-5 and 10-12. True to E.B. White’s original 1952 tale, this musical adaptation by Joseph Robinette with music by Charles Strouse (Annie, Bye-Bye Birdie) features all the charming characters that families love, including 8-year-old Fern Arable and wise Charlotte, whose deft work saves young
30
Wilbur from his farm animal fate. Come experience this timeless classic’s heartwarming tribute to friendship with toe-tapping songs, beloved barnyard animals, and one extraordinary spider. Directed by Lizanne Schader, the cast features familiar TNP faces and newcomers, most playing a human character and a farm animal or two. Former Bellingham resident Hannah Reclam plays Charlotte, and Rossner Gideon appears as the irresistible Wilbur. Other performers include Megann Schmidt (Fern), David Bolden (Mr. Zuckerman), Deb Currier (Mrs. Zuckerman), Alex Gardipe (Mr. Arable), Audra Robson (Mrs. Arable), Michael Latham (Avery), and Truxtun McCoy (Lurvy the farmhand). Jerry McGarity, Schader’s husband and Seattle equity actor, handles the role of Templeton. Audiences may remember him from A Year with Frog and Toad, and his interpretation of the unscrupulous rat is guaranteed to be funny. Ashley Van Curler provides musical direction with choreographer Stephanie Harper. Modeled after Seattle Children’s Theatre and Minneapolis Children’s Theatre, TNP is a non-profit children’s theater that produces age-relevant professional plays with experienced actors for area families. TNP offers a fall and spring production each year, and like SCT, every performance includes an educational Q&A with the actors after the show. TNP also invites elementary classes to daytime performances with their popular School Show Series, which features discounted tickets for students, a post-show Q&A, and a classroom visit by a Teaching Artist. As professional equity actors, Schader and McGarity have always wanted to offer children’s theater in Bellingham because the closest opportunity is Seattle Entertainment News Northwest ~ January 2014
Children’s Theatre. The mission of children’s theatre is to provide kids of all ages with access to high-caliber productions and theatre education. TNP began performing plays in 2011 with two short productions, Walking the Tightrope and Visiting Grandad, followed by Goodnight Moon, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. Charlotte’s Web is TNP’s sixth production. Schader says support is growing as TNP’s plays for children become familiar to the community. TNP’s biggest challenge is not having a permanent rehearsal space. For performances, the Bellingham Theatre Guild and the Firehouse Performing Arts Center have generously allocated time in their seasons to accommodate TNP productions – Theatre Guild in the fall, Firehouse in the spring. TNP offers a resounding thank you to its donors and sponsors, including Village Books, Community Food Co-op, Westford’s Broadway Hall, Love2Move Zumba Studio, Michael Watters, Whatcom Community Foundation, and WWU. Whatcom Educational Credit Union sponsors each production’s Pay-What-You-Can performance for families who might not otherwise be able to experience live theater. Charlotte’s Web showtimes are 7pm, and Sunday matinees are 2pm. Tickets are $12 adults and $8 youth, available at www.brownpapertickets.com or www.theneighborhoodplayhouse.com. A limited number will be available at the door, but advance tickets are recommended. Please note, the Theatre Guild is not wheelchair accessible, but TNP productions do allow babes in arms. Guild Celebrates Birthday — Gives Audiences A Gift by Christopher Key What do you plan to do on your 85th birthday? The Bellingham Theatre Guild, founded in 1929, plans to sing, dance, chew the scenery and generally not act its age. It’s called the BTG Musical Birthday Bash and will feature more than 80 songs drawn from 50 years of musicals, plus some drama and sundry scenes of silliness. Theatrical legends Kathy Murray and Martha Benedict assembled the spectacular and will direct an all-star cast of singers, dancers, and actors. “We wrote and produced this musical revue to entertain audiences, but more importantly to remind them of all the wonderful moments that the Guild stage has given audiences throughout the last 50 years,” Murray said. “This production will definitely get them humming and remembering.” Murray, who has directed many shows at the Guild, is also a long-time board member and past president. She and Benedict are both graduates of Western Washington University. “Theatre and music are my passions,” said Benedict, who has performed on nearly every stage in Whatcom County since the 1980s. “Kathy and I are a good collaborative team.” Playing everyone from Marian the Librarian to The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, the core cast will be supplemented by a large chorus and accompanied by Steve Barnes and his trio. When I said that the core cast consists of all-stars, I was not being hyperbolic. Recognize any of these names: Paul Henderson, Martin Bray, Angela Mills-Watson, Edward Davidson, Iris Likkel, Bonnie
Hollingsworth, Genevieve Dunn, TJ Anderson, Jenny Woods, Megann Schmidt? The Guild’s first musical, The Boyfriend, opened in August of 1963 and was a smash hit. Since that time, the Guild has celebrated musical theatre with works by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Adler and Ross. Settings have ranged from the steppes of Bellingham Theatre Guild. Photo by Christopher Key.
Clockwise from far left: Angela Mills-Watson, Jenny Woods, TJ Anderson and Paul Henderson. Photos by David Cohn.
Russia (Fiddler on the Roof), to the Great Plains of America (Oklahoma!), to a barroom in Bellingham (Mark Twain in Fairhaven). You’ll be swept from the South Pacific to the palace of Japan’s Mikado to the ballpark of those Damn Yankees. In addition to The Boyfriend, you might meet a lot of Guys and Dolls, The Boys from Syracuse or even Jesus Christ, Superstar. Looking for a little romance?

Entertainment News Northwest ~ January 2014
How about West Side Story, I Do, I Do, or Once Upon a Mattress? Musical genres will range from rock ‘n roll (Bye Bye Birdie), to down-home (Annie Get Your Gun), to however you categorize Sondheim (Sweeney Todd). And I’ve covered only a fraction of the musicals this production has to draw from. The BTG Musical Birthday Bash runs Jan. 24, 25, 26, and Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and 2 with nightly curtain times of 7:30pm and 2pm matinees on Jan. 26, Feb. 1 & 2. This is somewhat shorter than the usual BTG run. That, plus the memorable music and bulletproof cast practically guarantee a sellout. In other words, you need to order tickets in advance by calling the box office at 360-733-1811, Tuesdays-Saturdays, 1-6pm, beginning Tues., Jan. 14. At $14 for adults, $12 for seniors/students, and $8 for children under 12, there aren’t many better theatrical bargains. For more information on this show and the rest of the Guild’s 85th season, see www.bellinghamtheatreguild.com.
