Romeo and Juliet the Musical by Marla Bronstein Conrad Askland’s Romeo and Juliet the Musical will be playing at the Lincoln Theater in lovely downtown Mount Vernon for three weeks from January 30 through February 15. Askland has written a completely new score to accompany the text of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Skagit Symphony Family Concert 2015 by Osa Hale The Skagit Symphony brings music to all corners of the community. Often, their concerts draw in fans of the classical genres, with both local talent and nationally or internationally acclaimed musicians. To balance this, and create new lovers of classical music, the Skagit Symphony presents an annual educational concert. This program is performed at public schools, as an educational event, and once for the public, reaching out to students from private schools and home schools. This year, the 50-minute concert, titled “Travels Via Music,” will feature pieces by titans of the genre such as Johannes Brahms, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as well as a couple of less famous but equally influential composers (extra points if you already know the works of Eric Coates and Georges Bizet). The program also includes pieces the audience may recognize from pop culture, with selections from George Gershwin’s score for An American in Paris and Howard Shore’s score for The Lord of the Rings movies. Maestro Roupen Shakarian will introduce each piece. “Travels Via Music” will take place on January 25, at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon, beginning at 2pm. Lydia Place Annual Gala

by Marla Bronstein On February 7, 2015, the 14th annual Hearts For Housing Gala to benefit Lydia Place will take place at the Best Western Lakeway Inn at 5:30pm. Lydia Place was established in 1989 as a transitional home for women with children. At that time, the Transitional Housing Program facility was purchased, and the first served family received housing in October 1989. Since then, Lydia Place has grown to address the full spectrum of homelessness for all people and households through community partnerships, programs and services. In addition to the original Transitional Housing Program, Lydia Place now operates the Supportive Services Program, the Whatcom Homeless Services Center Program, and the Emergency House. All of these programs are collaborations with community partners such as the Bellingham Housing Authority, who are also working to end homelessness in Whatcom County. Drew Betz, board president, states that the agency’s programs and its collaboration with the Bellingham Housing Authority enable the organization to serve a greater number of homeless adults and children in our

community. The 2015 goals include providing services specifically for the well-being of children, and also to stop the generational cycle of homelessness. The year-end newsletter states that a third of the organization’s annual budget is dependent upon donations and fundraisers. A third of that third is from fundraisers like the Gala. According to Shultzie Willows, Development and Outreach Director, the theme “Hearts for Housing” was chosen based upon the foundation of the organization being loving, local, caring individuals who wanted to create a space and opportunity for homeless families to achieve sustained independence. Lydia Place in itself is inspired by and supported by an outpouring of love from the community. Three influential leaders in

the organization and community will be presented with a Heart Of The Organization Award at the Gala. These honorees have not yet been announced. Whatcom READS! 2015 by Osa Hale Libraries hold communities together in a unique way, as they hold far more than knowledge. The books and people inside can expand the mind and facilitate discussion and discovery. The Whatcom County Library System and Bellingham Public Library hold true to this form, with many of the libraries built by and for the people. Since 2008, Whatcom READS! has inspired people across the county to enjoy a book together. For 2015, the people of Whatcom County have been reading The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, by Daniel James Brown. Selecting the book was not a simple task, says Lizz Roberts, a member of the Whatcom READS! Steering Committee. The book must be widely available, with wide-reaching appeal and some cultural, historic, or local interest, while the author must be available to visit and engage the community. The subject matter resonates with the community, Roberts said. “Our readers really enjoy books with local connections, and we have a very strong rowing community in Whatcom County (as well as some world class college rowers at WWU!),” Roberts said. “We’ve been hearing a lot of great buzz

Western Reads, a similar program centered on the Western Washington University (WWU) campus, is partnering with the countywide program to bring Daniel James Brown to the area. Brown will be in Whatcom County from February 24 through 26. He will give two author talks (Feb. 24 at 7:30pm at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden and Feb. 25 at 7pm at the Mount Baker Theatre) where he will read from and discuss The Boys in the Boat. The author will also host discussions on his writing process (“Art & Craft of Writing,” Feb. 24 at 3:30pm at Whatcom Community College’s Heiner Theater) and his book, including a question-and-answer session (Feb. 25 at 2pm at Fairhaven Library). Finally, Daniel James Brown will appear at Mt. Baker High School, which happens to be the alma mater of one of the titular “Boys” in his book, to discuss The Boys in the Boat with students at an event that is open to the public (Feb. 26, 9:15am). Books will be on sale at all events, and Brown will sign copies as time allows. While having Brown visit is a huge highlight, it is actually the culmination of Whatcom READS! Prior to the author’s visit, there will be many events that relate to the book and its themes, Roberts says. The programs include a take on writing family histories by WWU professor Kevin

Leonard and reflections on life and rowing by local rower and boat-maker Dale McKinnon. Judy Rantz (daughter of Joe Rantz, a main character in The Boys in the Boat), will talk about her dad, her family, and the story behind the book. Former University of Washington rowers Bob Diehl (who also coached the WWU rowing team, and now presides as the board chairman of the Whatcom Rowing Association) and Curtis Smith (who wrote The Brothels of Bellingham) will come together to share their stories and thoughts about the sport of rowing. Finally, Whatcom READS! would not be complete without its accompaniment, the Whatcom WRITES! Anthology Contest (this year’s theme: competition), which will culminate in a reading by contestants at Village Books, complete with copies of the resulting anthology for sale. As an added bonus, this year, Whatcom READS! partnered with Allied Arts of Whatcom County to create an exhibit of local art inspired by the book, which will go on through February and March.
