CATS comes to the Lincoln Theatre by Joanna Nesbit As a first for the region, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of CATS the musical is coming to Mount Vernon’s Lincoln Theatre to liven up the dark days of January. Famed for being one of the most successful shows of all time and one of the longest running musicals, CATS is based on T.S. Eliot’s playful cat poems chronicled in Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats (1939). A wonderful opportunity for all ages, the production is presented by Skagit Valley’s META Performing Arts (Pan the Musical; Romeo and Juliet), whose mission is to provide quality theater opportunities for youth, particularly underserved youth, and draws student performers for this show from Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish counties. The students range in age from 8-20, except for one older adult playing Old Deuteronomy. For a youth cast to take on a musical of this caliber is a huge undertaking, say director Y’hon Frakes and producer Joe Bowen, but these talented veteran performers deliver, and audiences may forget the kids are, well, kids. “People are going to be amazed at the precision, the level of performing, and the singing and dancing in this show,” says Bowen, also president of META. “We had the option of doing a junior version, but we chose the full version. We knew the kids were up to it, and I wouldn’t have even asked them to do a lesser version.” The show is an hour and 45 minutes including

intermission (if you have little ones to consider). CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of the Jellicle Cats, who come out to play on one special night, the Jellicle Ball. It is on

this night that Old Deuteronomy, their benevolent leader, must select one cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer for rebirth into a new Jellicle life. One by one, in a spectacle of song and dance, each cat auditions in the hopes of being chosen. Audiences will meet lonely and sad Grizabella, who has been shunned from the tribe, played by 14-year-old META veteran Adia Bowen who will perform the iconic song “Memory.” Opposite Adia, her 10-year-old sister, Alex Bowen, plays Jemima the kitten. Another META veteran, Adrian Lane, tackles two roles, Mungojerrie and Skimbleshanks, trading Bronx and Irish accents in an “amazing high tenor,” Frakes says. Then there’s the playful kitten, the Rum Tum Tugger, played by high schooler Waylon Johnson; Munkustrap, played by 20-year-old Quinn Krivanek (Rocky Horror Picture Show); and many more. Lynden high school teacher Don McQuarrie handles the role of Old Deuteronomy. “He is amazing with the kids and has wanted to play Old Deuteronomy ever since he saw

the production in London,” Frakes says. “This role is a dream come true for him.” People familiar with Lloyd Webber’s CATS will be in for a treat with choreographer Suzanne McLamb’s rendition. With special nods to the movie version and the London performance, McLamb creates a new standard with her own interpretation. T.J. Anderson handles vocal direction, and Karen Rentko directs the orchestra. Keep an eye open for special effects surprises too, as well as other little twists on the original. The show runs weekends starting Friday, January 8, 7:30pm, through Saturday, January 23, 7:30pm, with a January 10 Sunday matinee at 2pm. Whatcom READS! 2016 by Osa Hale Can’t decide what to read as you snuggle up and stay warm through the late winter months? You’re in luck! Each year, residents of Whatcom County join together to enjoy the same book, creating a great big book club experience known as Whatcom READS! This year, the book of choice is A Tale for the Time Being: A Novel, by Ruth Ozeki (pictured below).

Ozeki’s novel is a beautiful tale that entwines the troubles of a 16-year-old in Tokyo and the life of her great grandmother, with the story of an author living in the Pacific Northwest. Tied together by a diary, a tsunami, and a masterful thread of storytelling, A Tale for the Time Being is an original, captivating tale. Janice Keller, the programming manager for the Bellingham Public Library, says this is part of why the book was chosen for this year’s Whatcom READS! “A Tale for the Time Being resonates on many levels with so many relevant, thought-provoking themes and ideas. There’s quantum physics, Buddhism, tsunamis, bullying, earthquakes, journaling and much more, all of which are starting points for reflection and discussion,” Keller said. “It’s the perfect book to delve into with friends, neighbors and colleagues.” Whatcom READS! is more than just a chance to read a wonderful book as a community. Through discussions, workshops, and other events, readers throughout the county have a chance to

fully experience this book, together. While the reading begins in January, most of the events will be taking place in March, when Ozeki herself will be visiting Bellingham and speaking at events throughout the county. The author’s presence is a fantastic opportunity for readers and writers alike, Keller said. “Ruth Ozeki is known as an interesting, accomplished speaker, a favorite among audiences nationwide,” Keller explained. “We are looking forward to introducing her to readers in our area!” Readers of Whatcom County will have the chance to see Ozeki speak on a variety of subjects, including the book itself, Buddhism, other works of hers, and the writing process. Some of these will be in lecture and discussion format, while others will be workshops. They will be hosted throughout the county, at libraries, art centers, and theaters. A full schedule of these events can be found on the Whatcom READS! website, at all public and academic libraries in the county, and at Village Books in Bellingham. For readers who feel particularly inspired by A Tale for the Time Being, the Whatcom READS! Art Challenge offers a unique opportunity to share that with the community. Anyone who has read the book is encouraged to create an art piece, in any medium, inspired by the novel. Works must be submitted on February 29 or March 1, and will be exhibited at the Allied Arts Gallery in

Bellingham. The collection in the gallery will then become yet another place where readers can see the communal experience of the book the county has been sharing. The only thing left to do? Get a copy of A Tale for the Time Being and start reading! Copies will also be available to purchase at Village Books.

Children’s Literature Conference at WWU by Marla Bronstein For many children, parents, caregivers and teachers, the joy of reading an illustrated book cannot be matched. The 13th Western Washington University Children’s Literature Conference will take place on February 27, 2016, at the PAC on the WWU campus. The event is organized by Nancy Johnson, Ph.D., Professor of Children’s and Young Adult Literature and English/ Language Arts Education at WWU. The conference enables teachers, librarians, readers, and writers to

gather to learn about and celebrate children’s literature. The featured authors and illustrators this year include: • Cynthia Lord, a children’s author and recipient of a 2007 Newbery Honor and winner of the Schneider Family Book Award; • Peter Brown, a writer and illustrator who has had many books on the New York Times Best Sellers list. He has also earned a 2013 Caldecott Honor; • Melissa Sweet has illustrated nearly 100 children’s books from board books to picture books and nonfiction titles and is the writer and illustrator of three of her own. She is the recipient of the 2012 Sibert Medal, the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award, an ALA Notable Book, the Flora Stieglitz Straus Award from Bank Street Books as well as the Cook Prize; and • Gene Luen Yang is the creator and illustrator of graphic novels. His first graphic novel was the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award, as well an Eisner Award for “Best Graphic Album, New.” He also received a nomination for a National Book Award and won the L.A. Times Book Prize. The day after the conference, WWU will host nErDcamp Bellingham, a free event that is a participant-driven, professional learning experience created by educators, for educators, with a focus on literacy in learning. Forging Reflection: Luminosity Meets Metal Work by Nancy Canyon Sculpture Northwest’s winter show runs through February 20, displaying works by sculptors Jason Brown, Wayne Kangas, and Peter Rand. Though their styles are significantly different, they have one thing in common: their sculptures emit, refract, and absorb light, mesmerizing viewers with direct, broken, and deflected rays that thread through the gallery, bouncing off mirrored metal, streaming from lightboxes, and casting shadows from forged metal. It’s as if the sculptures themselves are dialoguing with their art appreciators. Sculptor and blacksmith Jason Brown employs traditional Northwest Coast imagery in forged steel. It’s been suggested that his pieces connect with the viewer by conversing on the interior planes. “If the hardware I design is the speech from my hands, “Sisiutl,” forged steel and copper then sculpture is their song,” says Brown. ($5,000) by Jason Brown. Wayne Kangas collects scrap metal from fabrication shops and pieces together jeweled wall sculptures with unique texture, sometimes composed with as many as twelve different elements within a metal frame; the pieces almost glitter with movement. Artist Peter Rand displays contemporary architectural works: illuminated wood boxes lit from within and shining out between layered planes, creating dimensional light and shadow that inspires us all. Rand doesn’t limit his creativity. He says he works with a “variety of topics ranging from identity, urban spaces, technocentrism, synesthesia, and the absurd.” This is the third curated show since Sculpture Northwest’s Grand Opening in June of last year and “Cassettes,” repurposed metal another not-to-be-missed event. In our world of media and entertainment, it can be easy to forget the movie methods of times past. Film has come a long way in the last century, but it is wonderful to take the chance to honor and enjoy its origins. That is the idea behind the Mount Baker Theatre’s Silent Film Series, featuring the talented Dennis James as a live organist. James, a gifted organist and historical preservationist, will be hosting the series, which will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of three 1916 classics, including one double feature and one triple feature. James will also be providing live music and sound effects on the Wurlitzer pipe organ in the tradition of the silent era, giving audiences the chance to experience these films the way they were originally seen. It is a sight to behold, says Amy Guerra, the Theatre’s marketing director. “Having the pipe organ ringing out a live score to these shows offers us all a rare escape into a living exhibit of 1916,” Guerra explained. “The physicality of playing the organ, coupled with the high-drama of the films, makes a really exciting experience; the genuine period luxury of the theater recreates the bygone splendor of the ultra-elaborate movie houses.” The series will consist of three films, one each month. The first, taking place on January 24 at 3pm, will be a Charlie Chaplin triple feature. Chaplin’s classic Charlie Chaplin works Behind the (The Circus, 1928). On February 21 at 3pm, audiences can see the beloved film that brought us the classic image of Holmes. The 2016 Silent Film Series will wrap up with a grand finale, an action double feature. First up: the William S. Hart proto-Western Hell’s Hinges. After the intense action of that knocks the socks off everyone in the building, Douglas Fairbanks will hit the screen in The Americano. It’s all going down on March 13, at 3pm. All together, these three installments make the Silent Film Series a lovely look at Hollywood a hundred years ago, James said. It’s a unique form of entertainment these days. “This series gives us an opportunity to look at the very beginnings of successful silent film features together with their early styled musical scorings,” James explained. Tickets for each of the silent film events are available at the Mount Baker Theatre box office, and online at the theatre’s website. Tickets range in price from $10 to $22.50, depending on seating. Sixth Annual Bellingham Festival of Music “Welcome Home” Concert, January 2 by Deborah M. Bernard The Bellingham Festival of Music (BFM) will present pianist Cole Anderson in its sixth annual Welcome Home Concert at 7pm, Saturday, January 2 at the First Congregational Church on Cornwall Ave. The event celebrates professional musicians who received early training in Whatcom County. Anderson will play works of Gershwin, Percy Grainger, John Luther Adams and Franz Schubert. Percy Grainger was the eccentric Australian-born composer/crazy piano virtuoso who wrote “free rambles” on everybody’s work from Bach to Strauss to Gershwin. John Luther Adams is the award-winning wild man of composition who bases a lot of his works on his decades in Alaska. For each of the past five seasons, the BFM has invited back and presented an emerging musician of promise who is studying in a nationally recognized music program. These annual recitals are a way to recognize the accomplishments of the artists, their teachers, and the community that supported their early training. The program complements the Festival’s other outreach initiatives, including master classes, support of the fifth grade strings programs in the public schools, Beethoven-in-the-Schools, and Play it Forward Chamber Music Residencies. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Cole Anderson began his Cole Anderson studies in Bellingham at the age of six with Nancy Bussard. As a teenager, Cole was a two-time winner (2005 and 2006) of the Bellingham Music Club’s Enid Carrick High School Piano Award. He got his undergraduate degree at Oberlin Conservatory in 2007. Cole was the Class of 2011’s recipient of the prestigious Pi Kappa Lambda award for outstanding musical performance and scholarship. He also participated in the well-known Oberlinin-Asia orchestra tour during the winter of 2010-2011. Cole currently studies at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his master’s degree in 2013 and is currently finishing his doctorate under the instruction of Dr. Arthur Greene. From 2013-2014, Cole was on faculty at the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival, an exciting new project spearheaded by alumni from the University of Michigan. A musician dedicated to versatility of musical presentation and repertory, Cole has appeared as both a soloist and ensemble performer in concerts in North and South America, Asia, and Europe. He also performs frequently in duo performances with his wife, Chinese pianist Siyuan Li. The 7pm recital is free to students. Suggested donation for adults is $15.
