The 20th Annual Mount Baker Rhythm & Blues Festival by Deborah M. Bernard The entire planet adores and emulates the American South’s rich musical legacy: The genesis of Jazz. The birthplace of the Blues. Which begat Rock n’ Roll. There are 1300 Rhythm and Blues festivals every year in America (and 2000 in Europe; who knows why? Since it is our musical heritage, not theirs.) So you would imagine it would cost you a spendy airplane ticket to drop in on a Blues Festival that won the highest honor such a festival can win: the Blues Foundation’s Keepin’ the Blues Alive for America in 2013. But you would be wrong. The 20th Annual Mount Baker Rhythm & Blues Festival, voted Best Blues Festival in America in 2013, presents its 2015 festival July 31 through August 2 at the Deming Log Show Grounds. A maximum musical experience will be brought by American Rock Icons and Blues Legends, as well as local gifted musicians: Foghat; Ana Popovic, considered by many to be the Bonnie Raitt of Europe; Popa Chubby; Scott Holt, mentored by Buddy Guy; Leo Lyons of Ten Years After, a Woodstock veteran, with his band Hundred Seventy Split; Rick Estrin and the Nightcats; Kirby Sewell Band; The Fat Tones; Junkyard Jane; Midlife Crisis; The Wired Band; The Naughty Blokes; Nick Vigarino; and Jessie James and the Mob That’s right. Our very own modern day Woodstock. The 2015 season can be our Summer of Love for those that remember the original, or a first-time foray into an incredible three-day musical immersion that will be a once-in-alifetime experience. The big difference between Woodstock and this festival is: you can camp on the spacious, manicured 180-acre Deming Log Show grounds, which makes camping a pleasure rather than an exercise in survival. Free showers with soap are provided in the portable shower trailer—bring your own towel! There’s a Beer Garden, hosted by the Washington Blues Society. Plenty of food and merchandise vendors. ATM machines. Fans can bring their own food, chairs, and alcohol to their campsites (if they are over 21).

The Log Show grounds also house an indoor venue complete with stage, tables and chairs, and a large dance floor. This building comes alive every night directly after the main stage performances. The beer garden moves inside, and many if not all of the main stage performers have an All-Star Jam to end all jams. Organizer Lloyd Peterson said, “It’s amazing to see and hear our gifted local musicians tear it up with their national and international peers!” These jams last till 2am and are only open to fans that have purchased a weekend pass, “to

and honed their budding musical talent on the blues.” “Western Washington is not traditionally a blues area like down South, which is a hotbed of rhythm and blues,” Peterson said. “It’s been two decades since the Mount Baker R & B Festival opened its doors. It took a while for the word to get out to the fans. It hasn’t been easy in a traditionally non-blues area. We literally had to prove ourselves to our local community…a population consisting of country and rock & roll fans.” Once we got the fan base to appreciate the link between blues and rock & roll, and between blues and country, the festival grew and grew until now we have to limit tickets to 1000.” The complete weekend lineup is available at www.bakerblues. com. Friday, July 31, shows start at 5pm; Saturday, August 1, offerings run from 11am to closing; and Sunday, August 2, goes from 9am to closing. Levitt AMP Bellingham Music Series presents Downtown Sounds by Marla Bronstein For the 11th year in a row, Downtown Bellingham Partnership (DBP)’s Downtown Sounds will bring music, food trucks, an adult beverage garden and family friendly entertainment to the Arts District on Bay Street between W. Holly and W. Champion. Every Wednesday evening from 5:30-9:30pm in July, Downtown Sounds will lure thousands of people, creating a lively atmosphere for the bustling downtown district. Downtown Sounds is preparing for the impact to the series due to the current rebuilding of the Bay Street Bridge. Lindsay Payne, the Events Manager for the DBP, met with me to talk about the series. We found a nice, quiet space on a comfortable couch upstairs in The Greenhouse on Holly. This year’s series is sponsored by Puget Sound Energy and is a program of Levitt Pavilions, a national non-profit organization that empowers communities across America to transform neglected

public spaces into thriving destinations through the power of free, live music. Lindsey worked closely with Amanda Grove of Bellingham Parks and Recreation to get the support of Levitt Pavilions. Levitt is helping by expanding upon efforts to use the arts to revitalize and improve downtown, and nearby Maritime Heritage Park, where free, live music will attract new visitors and help revitalize a beautiful, underused public space. The support enabled DBP to court world-famous talent, increase the marketing budget, hire sound techs and rent the staging gear, as well as allowing for updated signage. All funds brought in to DBP at the event support the mission of the organization: To bring and keep businesses downtown and keep Bellingham’s downtown vibrant. international Reggae band with four decades of touring history. They travelled Europe with Bob Marley and the Wailers back in the 70s. Their opening band is local favorite Yogoman Burning Band, and during the break between bands, the Bellingham Circus Guild will bring in a mobile rig for aerialists to perform for the crowd. July 8: Acorn Project, an electro-funk Bellingham band will entertain with their distinctly eclectic sound. Opening for them is funk and jazz band McTuff from Seattle. July 15: Polecat from Whatcom County adds elements of bluegrass, country, Celtic, rock, reggae and world, putting a unique spin on traditional roots music. Opening for them is jazzy/world/Latin band, The New Triumph, who headlined at the Seattle Folk Festival. July 22: Ayron Jones and The Way is a Seattle blues/soul/pop and rock band with the raw energy of punk and the inner-city attitude of hip-hop. Opening band is the Scott Pemberton Trio from Portland, who play rock, blues, funk, psychedelic, soul-jazz. July 29: Five Alarm Funk from Vancouver is, a horn-powered, percussion-fueled sonic powerhouse of Afro-Funk, Latin, ska and punk, featuring tight choreography. Opening band is local Baby Cakes, who will perform classic rhythm & blues, funk and soul. While the construction won’t stop the music, the concert organizers are quickly determining the best location for the food trucks to accommodate those in need of sustenance. The beverage garden provided by Boundary Bay Brewery and the Spark Museum of Electrical Invention will be expanded. In addition, the restaurants that surround the concerts will be open for business and happy to take your order.

Exhibit: “Helmi’s World: Symbol, Myth, Fantasy” – This exhibit presents

65 artworks (paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics) drawn from the Whatcom Museum’s collection of Helmi’s work, which numbers 250 objects. Some of her finest pieces are highlighted, including paintings of petroglyphs from Central Washington, and prints based on the Makah Wolf Dance experienced at Neah Bay. The exhibition suggests the complexity of Helmi’s vision by displaying some or her most unusual artworks, where images and symbols from a variety of cultures converge. The influences of Mark Tobey, Pablo Picasso, Scandinavian Folk Art, and Judeo-Christian and Buddhist iconography are also explored. Farmers Markets for All-Ages Summer Fun by Joanna Nesbit Besides warmer temperatures and sunshine, summer brings us farm-fresh produce and unique artisan wares not available at brick-and-mortar locations. Whatcom and Skagit County have top-shelf farmers markets to stock your kitchen and have fun meeting up with friends while you’re doing it. Here’s a peek at several regional markets.

Bellingham Farmers Market.

Located in Depot Market Square in downtown Bellingham, this market has evolved into one of the largest farmers markets in the state, drawing more than 10,000 visitors a month. Housed in part in a 7,000 square-foot, pavilion-style building, the market is convenient to visit no matter the weather. With 95-105 vendors on any given Saturday, it’s a vibrant hub for socializing as people shop for produce and peruse handcrafted artisan items. Plenty of outdoor seating and quality food vendors make the market a great lunch destination, while local buskers and kids’ activities keep things lively for all ages. Most Saturdays feature a special event, including Demo Day (second Saturday of the month), Chef in the Market (third), and Kids Vendor Day (fourth). The relatively new Demo Day features an expert demonstrating a specific kind of food prep or storage technique—how to make soup stock, for example, using seasonal vegetables. Skagit Valley Highland Games Celebrates 21st Year Authenticity and Innovation Keep Event Fresh A common challenge faced by producers of annual festivals, is how to keep their events different and interesting from year to year. For events like the Skagit Valley Highland Games with a focus on culture and heritage, a large part of the appeal remains the tried and true favorites like bagpipe bands, Highland dancing and traditional Scottish athletic events. There are structured children’s events organized by the Children’s Museum of Skagit County; bagpipe and drum, and Highland dancing competitions throughout the weekend; heavy athletic events, sheepdog trials, a Celtic farm, and even a whisky garden. “Presenting different musical groups and performers is another way to keep things fresh,” says Richendrfer. Entertainment headliners for this year’s festival include Pipe Major Stuart Liddell, one of the world’s most decorated Highland Bagpipers, from Inveraray, Scotland. He will

be part of the adjudicating panel for the bagpipe competitions on Saturday, July 11, and also has a featured performance spot on the festival’s main stage. Liddell will also be preforming at the inaugural “Gathering of the Clans” event on Friday, July 10 at the Celtic Arts Foundation’s new Littlefield Celtic Center. Another musical headliner this year is The Fire Scottish Band, a duet featuring bagpiper David Brewer and fiddler Rebecca Lomnicky. Community Boating Center’s Ferry Farewell Flotillas

Renewing a tradition begun in 2013, the local, nonprofit Community Boating Center will continue this summer to host flotillas of watercraft in south Bellingham Bay for bidding adieu to departing Alaska ferries bound for Ketchikan. Boats of all kind are encouraged to join the gatherings. To enhance participation, the Boating Center offers 50% off rental fees for humanpowered watercraft, including kayaks, rowboats and paddleboards during the Farewell Flotilla events. Ferry Farewell Flotillas will take place July 3, 25, and August 28, beginning at 5pm. Again this year, the centerpiece of the Flotillas will the vessel Plume, a longboat replica built by staff and students of Bellingham’s Home Port Learning Center.

Plume will be available for a limited group to be the crew for the ferry send-off. Mike Baker, Home Port faculty member and captain of Plume, says, ”Plume is a time-travelling vessel that can take you back 230 years. She has been Home Port’s floating classroom for 18 years, enabling students to understand the benefits of interdependence and hard work. Nothing makes community like a small boat.” Sign-ups for participating aboard Plume begin at 5pm on the evenings of the events, near the public boat launch in Fairhaven. Donations are appreciated. All participants should wear a life jacket and have clothing available for a variety of weather. Life jackets will be available for Plume participants and CBC renters. Friday Flotillas will sendoff the 418-foot MV Columbia. The lone Saturday gathering on July 25 will bid adieu to the 382-foot MV Kennicott. “The Flotillas showcase and celebrate the variety of boats that contribute to the rich maritime culture of the Bay,” says Community Boating Center director Steve Walker. “The CBC’s primary focus is on education and access for small humanpowered and non-motorized watercraft. However, with Bellingham Bay being the largest bay in the Salish Sea, there is plenty of water to share for all kinds of vessels, from paddleboards to big ships. The Boating Center is pleased that the Ferry

Farewell gatherings have become a summer tradition for boaters from throughout Whatcom County.” The Community Boating Center is open for boat rentals every day of the week. by Osa Hale Summer has finally arrived in Bellingham, with long, balmy days leading into warm, breezy nights. It’s the perfect time of year for outdoor activities and twilight events. Two long-standing local traditions, the Bellingham Park Concerts and the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema, make their return this year with plenty of exciting entertainment options. This summer, the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema will be screening movies every Saturday evening from June 20 through August 29 (except for July 4) at the Fairhaven Village Green. Not only that... the movies will be preceded by live entertainment ranging from circus acts to trivia. Highlights of the outdoor movie series include live music performed by Gentri Watson, followed by Mean Girls on the evening of July 11. Fans of a little friendly competition can look forward to trivia nights on July 18 and August 22, followed by Jurassic Park and Guardians of the Galaxy, respectively. The movie events go on rain or shine, with admission set at $5 per person (except for kids age 5 and under, who get in for free). Though there is some room for lawn chairs on the brick surrounding the grass, most of the seating in the Village Green is on the ground. As much fun as the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema has to offer, it isn’t the whole story when it comes to local entertainment. Bellingham Parks & Recreation is putting on the beloved park concert series, with one twist: 2015 will not include any shows in Boulevard Park. Instead, the live music will be taking place at Woodstock Farm, Maritime Heritage Park, and Elizabeth Park. With bands running the gamut of musical genres, the concerts are free and a great, fun activity for the whole family. The

Woodstock Farm Concerts will take place on August 2 with Rivertalk at 3pm, and on August 16, Prozac Mtn Boys will perform at 2pm, with Gallowglass at 4pm. There will also be a full day of games, tours, and other activities. The Elizabeth Park Concert Series is quite extensive, with free weekly shows every Thursday from June 25 through August 27. There’s something for everyone in this line-up, with local bands and regional darlings, playing anything from African dance music to ragtime stomps, with everything in between. It’s the perfect opportunity to see an old favorite or try something new. See the line-up for July on page 4. Finally, the live music at Maritime Heritage Park is a convergence of the Music at Maritime concert series put on by Levitt AMP Bellingham, and the Outdoor Concert Saturdays put on by Bellingham Parks and Recreation. An Improvised Musical – The Upfront

Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival – Celebrating its 26th Season,

Bard on the Beach is one of Canada’s largest not-for-profit, professional Shakespeare Festivals. Winner 2015 Mayor’s Arts Award

Celtic Center Of The Pacific Northwest Opens A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 16 at the Littlefield Celtic Center, in Mount Vernon. The Center is the only one of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and is named after its benefactors, Laura and Edmund Wattis Littlefield, Jr. It will accommodate seated meals, concerts, and lectures for up to 150 people, and will include the necessary amenities to become a hub of activity that will make a vibrant contribution, not only to the Celtic Arts Foundation and its stakeholders, but to the broader community as well. Here is a photo of the Center under construction that was taken in May. The journey towards this amazing accomplishment began in 2012, when the Foundation created a capital campaign to secure a permanent home. Thanks to the generosity of well over 150 individuals from seven U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, over $240,000 was initially raised. A house and large property at the corner of Cleveland and Section Streets was purchased, razed and rebuilt as a permanent office for the CAF.

Then, in 2013, the CAF received a pledge for a $500,000 donation, initiating the second phase of this project, the addition of the 3790 square foot Littlefield Celtic Center. The Mount Vernon based architectural firm, HKP, was selected to design and oversee the completion of the cultural center. In 2014, an additional $1.1 million donation was made by the Littlefields, allowing the CAF to commence with the construction of the second phase. The local company, Fisher & Sons, have done a magnificent job of constructing the Center. Several pending grant applications will allow for further upgrades. The Celtic Arts Foundation, founded in 1997, is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It sponsors, encourages, and promotes Celtic culture through community festivals, events, and

education programs, annually producing a dozen events in four Washington State counties. Come and explore the Bellingham Tap Trail with the Trail Hop’ers on Tuesdays in July (7, 14, 21, 28) from 5:30-7pm. Late Night Film and Midnight Release Celebrating Harper Lee and Go Set a Watchman – In 1960, Harper

Rotary presents its annual Brewers by the Bay microbrew tasting on Sun., July 26 from 1-5pm in Depot Market Square in downtown Bellingham.
