by Justin Hawkinson As many as three thousand people are expected to enter the Deming Log Show grounds July 29-31 to experience The 21st Annual Mt. Baker Rhythm & Blues Festival. “It’s a family vibe that makes the event so special,” said Lloyd Peterson, the director and founder of the festival. Lloyd has grown “The Baker” over the past two decades and was awarded Best Festival in America at the 2013 Keeping the Blues Alive Awards. Early birds will get the chance to see an extra show Thursday, July 28 from 8pm until midnight with IBC award winning The Noah Wotherspoon Band
playing in the museum building for a $10 cover. The money will all go to the band and crew. Washington Blues Society will run a beer garden during show hours so this show is 21+ only. The festival opens in full on Friday evening with three up-and-coming artists looking to make new fans. Harmonica virtuoso Carson Diersing will take the stage at 5pm, followed by Vancouverite Arsen Shomakov at 7pm. Friday’s festivities will be headlined by Norwegian guitar prodigy Magnus Berg in the 9pm slot. After the mainstage goes dark, many of the performers will meet in the Museum building, where they start an informal jam session that often runs until 2am. Weekend pass holders can attend the after-hours jam if they choose, and attendees are encouraged to bring an instrument and join in. Saturday’s official activities begin at 11am with some of the finest blues
A tradition for Sunday morning is The Baker’s version of church – Reverend Deb’s Gospel Hour featuring Joel Tepp. Reverend Deb Englhardt provides a message of faith while Seattle Blues Historian Joel Tepp presents authentic gospel songs at 9am in the museum. Local favorites The Naughty Blokes will hit the mainstage at 11am with a style that earned rave reviews at last years’ festival. musicians the Pacific Northwest has to offer. First, The Wasteland Kings from eastern Oregon will offer up their unique brand of American Roots Music with a strong rock influence. At 1pm, Skagit County trio Josey Wales will bring their high energy set to keep the crowd dancing. The afternoon 3pm slot brings a special treat with The Bobby Patterson Band. Bobby is well known as the guitarist and singer of The Fat Tones, a legendary Spokane blues band. Another IBC award winner, Selwyn Birchwood, is scheduled to share his personality and lap steel guitar with the crowd at 5pm. A mainstay from the 1965 UK blues scene, Kym Symmonds and Savoy Brown will be in the spotlight at 7pm. Headlining this year are The Yardbirds, a British invasion band from the 1960s still remembered for hit songs such as “For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul;” they’ll be presenting both new and familiar songs to the crowd at 9pm.

Reigning IBC “Best Guitarist” Noah Wotherspoon will return with his band at 5pm for a set that will feature tracks from his new album, “Mystic Mud.” The festival caps off at 7pm with Popa Chubby, a product of the New York punk scene that is known for putting his guitar heavy spin on blues standards as well as several rock favorites. Calidore String Quartet to Perform July 7 and 9 by Deborah M. Bernard The Bellingham Festival of Music’s 23rd season will combine “the most beautiful music in the most beautiful place” July 1-17 this year. Its resident ensemble, The Calidore String Quartet, will perform on July 7 and 9, in addition to participating in a variety of outreach events. With its career skyrocketing, and many national awards under its belt, the ensemble made its debut at New York’s Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, May 10. They also won the $100,000 M-Prize, a major new chamber music award from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater and Dance. The musicians are artists-in-residence at Stony Brook University, and a resident group of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two for 2016-2019. On July 7, the Calidores will perform a full recital, featuring works of Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky, each written for a chamber quartet. The Calidores will be the featured artists in the world premiere of Juan Ramirez’s Suite Latina for string quartet and orchestra on July 9. As a passionate supporter of music education, the Calidore String Quartet is deeply committed to mentoring and educating young musicians, students and audiences. They will appear at Drayton Harbor Music Festival Summer Camp on Sunday, July 10, at the Blaine Performing Arts Center. At 4:30pm, a question and answer session with the quartet will be followed by an evening performance at 7pm in which the Calidores will be among the featured players. Founded at the Colburn School of Music in 2010, the quartet named its group Calidore as a combination of California and dore’, French for golden, to honor The Golden State where they got their start as a quartet. The quartet consists of Jeffrey Myers and Ryan Meehan, both on violin; Estelle Choi on cello; and Jeremy Berry on viola. Jeremy is the son of Bellingham Festival of Music Chair Karen Berry and Dr. Donald Berry. Jeremy received his early musical training in Bellingham. Karen Berry and her husband both have lifetime careers in medicine. “My boys gave me my love for classical music,” she told me. Jeremy’s older brother, Andrew, grew passionate about violin lessons at the age of 5. Jeremy would also attend every lesson, and he and Karen grew to love classical music as well. Karen explained that Chamber music was written for small parties. Because of its intimate nature, chamber music has

been described as “the music of friends.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described chamber music as “four rational people conversing.” Such well-performed music, plus the intimacy of a chamber string quartet, makes me feel like I am a voyeur, witnessing conversation among four very good friends,” Karen said. The Calidores have been described as “the epitome of confidence and finesse,” by Gramophone magazine and “a miracle of unified thought,” according to La Presse, Montreal. I asked Karen about their international reputation for polished, adept, and passionate performances. “I see it,” she said. “They have so much stage presence. They have the

confidence. Their very body language seems to say, ‘We are here. We are grounded. We are delighted to play for you, so let’s get this show on the road.’ They step forward as one person, and bow together. It’s pretty special to witness that.” Concerts are at WWU and start at 7pm, with free lectures at 6:30pm. Tickets run $25-$45 for individual concerts and festival packages are available. There are discounts for faculty and students under 18 and free parking in designated lots on the WWU campus. For tickets, contact boxoffice@wwu.edu or call 360-6506146. Albert Lee with Special Guest Kate Taylor – Albert Lee (above) is “the guitar
player’s guitar player,” universally recognized in music circles as one of the world’s finest, as well as one of the top rockabilly guitarists in history. Albert has not only worked with some of the biggest names in music, like Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris and the Everly Brothers, but has also maintained a solo career of his own. In his fifth decade as a professional musician, Lee is part of a rarefied fraternity as a virtuoso’s virtuoso, respected on three continents and pretty much living out a professional life that most of his colleagues, when he started out, could only dream of. Born in New England and raised in North Carolina, Kate Taylor (at right) shares her dual musical heritage with brothers James, Livingston, Hugh, and her late brother Alex. Her roots run deep in the soul, gospel and rockabilly sounds of her Southern upbringing and in the literate folk, pop and Appalachian stylings that (continued on page 10)

Downtown Bellingham Partnership Brings on the Heat by Marla Bronstein Downtown Bellingham Partnership (DBP) is committed to growing and sustaining a vibrant downtown environment. Interim Executive Director Alice Clark and Events Manager Lindsey Payne have big plans for this summer, as they continue to create opportunities for people to do things together, helping to unite diverse interests while maintaining the unique culture of downtown. This year marks the 13th year of Downtown Sounds, a series of free concerts held on five Wednesday nights. These outdoor concerts are for the entire family and are celebrated in the Arts District on the 1300 block of Bay Street. Whatcom County’s biggest urban music festival is firmly cemented as summer’s hottest attraction. Each of the five nights will feature performances by popular bands, local food vendors, and a 21+ beverage garden supported by Boundary Bay Brewery. Payne is very excited about the lineup for Downtown Sounds this year, which incorporates local and international acts. The presenting sponsor is The Beauty Institute - Schwarzkopf Professional. Add these confirmed dates and performers for the summer lineup to your calendar. On July 6, The Dip, a nine-piece soul band from Seattle will open the Downtown Sounds 2016 season. They

are joined by The Austerman File who play a fusion of soul, funk, reggae and blues. July 13 concertgoers will enjoy Marmalade, a collective of more than 12 musicians whose diverse stylings of funk, soul, hip-hop, afro-beat, electronic, and dub music will make you dance. Opening for Marmalade will be Bellingham’s Snug Harbor, an 8-piece funk-soul revival group. July 20 will bring us folk-rock, Americana, soul and blues with Fruition
from Portland, Oregon. They are partnered with Vaudeville Etiquette from Seattle. July 27 brings homegrown Indie folk pop band Rabbit Wilde paired with Seattle’s Heels to the Hardwood who play contemporary Americana blues-rock powered by soul with a touch of old fashioned stomp. The final Wednesday, August 3, will feature Bellingham’s Mostafa’s Super Group, which includes members from local bands Galapagos, Acorn Project, Snug Harbor, My Dad Bruce, The Trees: Rush Tribute, and Mostafa. The headlining performer is Bay area’s Lyrics Born, an internationally known Japanese-American rapper and producer. Another major event series hosted by DBP is the Commercial Street Night Market. Four times a year, they close down the 1300 block of Commercial Street for food, entertainment, and shopping. A wildly successful June 3 Commercial Street Night Market recently kicked off this summer. If you have never attended the Commercial Street Night Market, it’s an opportunity to experience downtown Bellingham like you never have before. The Night Market is an event unique to downtown and its culture. Artisan vendors, unique eating, funky musicians, and rare entertainment are in attendance. There are two remaining Friday Market nights for 2016 scheduled for September and December. Anyone interested in being a vendor at the September or December market can get an application from the DBP website. Payne is excited that community has embraced Downtown Sounds and the Commercial Street Night Market, and expects them to continue to grow. Last year, DBP received a grant to help fund

The Marrowstone Music Festival by Osa Hale Making beautiful music is never easy, but it can be a joyful process. This summer, a group of talented young students will have a unique opportunity to experience that process as part of the Marrowstone Music Festival, hosted by Western Washington University. In turn, the community will have a chance to enjoy the music created by these students and their distinguished teachers. This is a 73-year-old tradition that continues to grow more dynamic and moving with each new musician who passes through the doors of WWU’s Performing Arts Center. The performances are brought to life by the students, fueled by people like Music Director Stephen Radcliffe of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras. The entire festival, which includes instruction by acclaimed artists from around the world, is presented and organized by the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras. “We have hundreds of students coming together from all across America, Canada, and abroad,” Radcliffe said. “These are some of the most talented musicians in the country, and to stand in front of them as a conductor, to see the smiles on their faces, the furrowed brows
of concentration, and the joy they have as they share great music with one another and with the Bellingham community, is so rewarding to me personally.” The Marrowstone Music Festival combines the educational value of a workshop with the excitement of a live performance, with participants constantly learning new repertoire and presenting their work for the community, with amazing results. Both the students and the audience benefit from this unique approach, Radcliffe explained. “There is a marked sense of excitement that the audience feels when Like us on Facebook

they listen to the orchestra members playing this great music for the first time. There will most definitely be a freshness and vitality to the performances that I experienced in no other orchestra or festival,” Radcliffe said. The Marrowstone Music Festival contains three orchestras: the Marrowstone Philharmonic, the Marrowstone Festival Orchestra, and the Marrowstone Chamber Orchestra. The Philharmonic performs lighter, slightly simpler works, while the Festival Orchestra is tasked with the more challenging repertoire. The Chamber Orchestra is the most select ensemble, and will perform works that span genres and can be quite complex. Each orchestra rehearses daily and performs on Thursday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Community members are also welcome to stop by the Performing Arts Center during the weekday rehearsals, to get a behind-the-scenes peek at the process. Both the rehearsals and the performances will be thrilling. Besides the musical chemistry that always marks the Marrowstone Music Festival, the pieces being performed this year will bring some extra verve, Radcliffe says. “This year, the music is exceptionally challenging for the orchestra members, and yet exceptionally rewarding for the audience,” he said. “Pieces like Richard Winner 2015 Mayor’s Arts Award
Strauss’ Don Juan, Janacek’s Sinfonietta, and Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini; these are all huge orchestra pieces that are so filled with passion, elegance, excitement and virtuosity. I just can’t wait!” The Marrowstone Music Festival will be taking place mainly in the WWU Performing Arts Center, with its final show at the Mount Baker Theatre. Evening shows on July 28, July 30, August 4, and August 6 will begin at 7:30pm. Daytime shows on July 31 and August 7 will begin at 3pm, with the latter show taking place at the Mount Baker Theatre. Schedule and ticket information can be found online at www.marrowstone.org. Tickets can be purchased at the box offices of the WWU Performing Arts Center or the Mount Baker Theatre.

Celebrate Celtic Culture at the Skagit Valley Highland Games by Courtney Kendall Grab your kilt and strike up the bagpipes—it’s time for the Skagit Valley Highland Games & Celtic Festival! Held July 9-10, this annual event attracts over 10,000 people to Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon to share and celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture. The festival is presented by the Celtic Arts Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1997 whose mission is “to sponsor, encourage, and promote Celtic culture through events and The Color Guard leads the Opening Ceremonies of the Skagit Valley Highland Games & Celtic Festival, held July 9 and 10. educational activities.” Self-described as “a kind of Photo courtesy of the Celtic Arts Foundation. Scottish three-ring circus,” the family-friendly festival is a weekend packed with cultural activities, music, children’s activities, and of course, traditional competitions. The Skagit Valley Highland Games are a part of an annual circuit of Scottish competitions held in the Pacific Northwest and lower mainland of British Columbia, which means the competition level and entertainment value are extremely high. Traditional Highland dancing, pipe and drum competitions, sheepdog trials, and athletic events such as the caber toss will be going on throughout the weekend. There will also be tents dedicated to the fiddle, harp, Celtic arts and crafts, spinners and weavers, Scottish and Irish clans, and the culture tent where you can learn about all things Celtic. Food will be available at the festival, and you can stop by the beer and whiskey tent, featuring whiskeys of the world, for a wee dram. Members of the Celtic Arts Foundation receive free admission, and anyone can become a member. One-day passes for the event are $15 for adults with discounted tickets available for families of four or more, students, seniors, and active military personnel. Weekend passes are $20. Children 5 and under are free. Parking at Edgewater Park is free, and a shuttle will be running every 20 minutes to take people to the grounds.

Modeled after established Villages throughout the country, Bellingham at Home is a membership-based program of The Whatcom Council on Aging that provides members with a wide range of benefits and support. By calling one phone number, members can get help with anything from household chores or repairs to transportation, a list of preferred service providers, a membership for Bellingham Senior Activity Center, and, most importantly, a social network. Photo by Kate Birr.
Bellingham at Home will launch in July and, as of the beginning of June, already has over 40 members. “And they keep coming,” laughs Kate Birr, leader of the program’s publicity task force. “We got the gleam in our eye early 2014,” Kate explains. After visiting a Village in Portland, Oregon, they began the foundation for Bellingham at Home, working with Whatcom Council on Aging, a 501(c)(3). Villages are grassroots organizations whose primary mission is to address the challenges of aging adults in the United States. Bellingham at Home is currently run entirely by volunteers. Kate, both a member and volunteer, says it’s not uncommon that members in turn become volunteers and further the cycle of neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers are needed to help out with minor chores, give rides, put on social activities, or even just check-in on members with a friendly visit. To fill out a volunteer application or membership form, visit www.wccoa.org. To Kate, Bellingham at Home is more than just a number to call for help. It’s about “putting the personal” into aging independently. Visit www.ennw.info to view Entertainment News NW on your computer, smartphone or tablet

Sail & Paddlesport Summer Camp –
This favorite is a sampler of many of the activities we offer at the Community Boating Center: sailing, kayaking, standup-paddleboarding, and occasionally outrigger canoeing and rowing. Youth love being able to try out different boats based on their interest, the group’s interest, and the weather conditions. We focus initiatives, games, and skill building activities around individual and group skill development, building self confidence, and simply having fun on the water. We expect that your child will leave having learned basic kayaking, sailing, navigation, and safe boating skills - but an overall positive experience with small-boats is our goal in this camp. Our camps run rain or shine. Occasionally camps may even visit nearby boats such as the Schooner Zodiac or the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Terrapin. Kids won’t want this one to end! Join us at 555 Harris Avenue Bellingham on Mon.-Fri., July 25-29, 10am-4pm. Admission is $280. Benefit for Orphans in Nepal by Jude Green Himalayan Children’s Charities (HCC) is a non-profit working in Nepal “to transform the lives of orphaned, abandoned, and underprivileged youth by empowering them through nurturing care, education, and mentorship; creating opportunities so that they may live healthy, happy lives and become leaders in their communities.” In March, I was privileged to attend the graduation ceremony for the organization’s first ten university graduates. The Dhading District of Nepal is a remote area that was heavily impacted by the earthquake in April and May of last year. My daughter, Sadie Green, directs HCC’s Dhading Children’s Initiative (DCI), now supporting the education of more than ninety children who lost parents in the earthquake. The idea is to keep families together, keep children in school in their communities, and give them support that makes a difference in their lives. In an introduction video on the HCC website (hccnepal.org), Sadie says that people are doing the best they can, but the situation remains dire. A photograph shows makeshift housing of tents and temporary structures with tin roofs. Five people from Bellingham, who traveled to Nepal to Sadie Green (center) with Laxmee attend Sadie’s Hindu wedding, are hosting a benefit for and Manna, two of the HCC HCC. We will be showing slides of our travels there. University graduates. Photo(s) by Judith Green. While in Nepal, we had a henna party, shopped in the tourist district, visited temples, had traditional clothing made, rode elephants, went river rafting, tried local cuisine, and danced with a traditional drumming group. Some visitors hiked, visited remote villages and did art projects with the kids at HCC. We will be talking about many aspects of our individual and shared experiences. The Benefit for Nepali Children will be held on July 31 at 7pm at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship, 1207 Ellsworth, in Bellingham. The suggested donation is $10. We will address different aspects of our journey, and Sadie will be in attendance to speak about the organization’s work and to answer questions. https://www.facebook. com/events/1639922222996150/ Visit www.ennw.info to view Entertainment News NW on your computer, smartphone or tablet

Where’s Waldo? – In
Fairhaven, of course. Kids, parents and Waldo-lovers of all ages are invited to join Village Books again this year for the month-long scavenger hunt to find the elusive Waldo hidden in local businesses around Fairhaven. Anyone who wishes to participate can look for the Waldo decal on participating business windows/doors to pick up a “Find Waldo in Fairhaven!” search list with the names of all the businesses. After finding each Waldo, participants will collect an “I Found Waldo at ___________” card from the business employees for each Waldo spotted. Collecting cards in sixteen or more businesses and turning them in at Village Books will win a Waldo button and an entry for other, larger prizes to be drawn at a Waldo party on July 31. The Grand Prize is a complete six-volume set of Waldo books. People who prefer a shorter version of the hunt can collect the cards from eight businesses and pick up a Waldo button at Village Books. There is no charge to participate, and the game lasts for the entire month of July, with a celebration Sun., July 31, at 6pm at Village Books. Join us for your chance to win some great prizes, and spot Waldo in the store! Info: www.villagebooks.com , 360-671-2626.
