Two Innovative Musical Artists Reunite to present American Portraits at Bellingham’s Old City Hall On July 28, Jonathan Levin (at right), a concert pianist from New York City, will team up with his long-time friend and Bellingham native, Angelo Rondello (below), to present a collection of their most personal selections, or “portraits” of America. “The program has a little bit of everything,” Rondello explains. “Melodies and works, which everyone will recognize and enjoy, and music never heard by many, which will perhaps be a revelation to audiences.” Most of the music Levin will play was either written or adapted by him. “I started creating my own arrangements and re-imaginings of various American standards,” he explains. “Each composition or arrangement is in some way inspired by people or experiences I’ve had over the years.” The concert includes Levin’s virtuosic arrangements of popular American Songbook tunes, as well as spirituals and folk melodies. Rondello will be performing the popular “Adagio” from “Spartacus” by Khachaturian, arranged by Matthew Cameron, a former classmate of the two performers. Russian-American composer Vladimir Drozdoff’s haunting musical tribute to Chopin will also be heard, and the evening will end with the incomparable American classic, “Rhapsody in Blue.” The concert will be held in the Rotunda Room of Old City Hall, 121 Prospect St. in Bellingham on Friday, July 28 at 7:30pm. Admission is $20 adults, $15 seniors, and $5 for youth under 18 yrs. The Box Office opens at 6:30pm and the doors will open at 7pm. Mount Baker Rhythm and Blues Festival by Marla Bronstein Does the idea of spending the weekend in the beautiful mountain forest of Whatcom County, listening to the best rhythm and blues for just about 72 hours straight rock your world? Set your sights for the 180-acre, Deming Logging Show Grounds, and mark your calendar for the Mount Baker Rhythm and Blues Festival on August 4, 5 and 6. Coinciding with British Columbia Day, a Canadian Civic Holiday, the festival always falls on the weekend of the first Monday in August. Now in its 22nd year, organizer Lloyd Peterson has amassed some of the best internationally known musicians ticket money can buy. This year’s theme is Tribute to Americana. “The blues is the mother of it all,” says Peterson. “You’ll hear rock ’n roll, jazz, pretty much everything except for Celtic music and bluegrass.” Peterson’s DNA has tested positive for music since his days at San Francisco’s Fillmore West in the 60s. Campers arriving Thursday will be treated to a special 8pm concert by Norway’s brilliant guitarist, Magnus Berg. The festival officially begins with the downbeat Friday at 5pm. The evening line-up features Washington groups Jesse James and the MOB, and Josey Wails from Skagit Valley. Closing out the night will be blues stylist Davy Knowles from the Isle of Man. The amps fire up at 11am on Saturday. The Fabulous Roof Shakers take the stage first, sporting a solid rhythm section, gritty vocals, wailing blues harmonica, soulful sax and smokin’ guitar. Stacy Jones Band follows, providing “rolling thunder blues of Howlin’ Wolf mixed with the honesty of Lucinda Williams.” Next is local favorite The Chris Eger Band. Returning to the festival is Saskatchewan’s Juno winner, flamenco-blues style guitarist, Jack Semple. The weekend headliner, performing in the Pacific Northwest for the first time, is the recently formed group, The Weight. Made up of players from The Band, as well as those connected to their legacy, the group features Jim Weider, Brian Mitchell, Marty Grebb, Albert Rogers, and Michael Bram. Closing out Saturday is national performer, festival favorite, California native and Nashville resident “guitar slinger” Shane Dwight. Sunday morning at 11am, Hambone Wilson from West Virginia and his Fender Telecaster play roots music, Americana,

Middle: Fronting his own band for nearly a decade, guitarist and vocalist Chris Eger has been described as extraordinary across multiple genres of music. blues, rockabilly, old time rock n’ roll, boogie, country, and swing. Brian Lee and the Orbiters perform tunes from the broad blues tradition, followed by The Bobby Patterson Band’s passionate blues originals. Magnus Berg returns to the stage for the second time. Closing out the day is international treasure Walter Trout and the Radicals. Peterson promises stellar music all day. More magic happens at the All-Star After Hours Blues Jam. Beginning at the close of the final performances Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Jam goes until 2am and is the bonus for those who have purchased an overnight pass. Tickets for day and weekend passes are available online at www.bakerblues.com and in person at Burlington’s Hugo Helmer Music, 1025 Goldenrod Road,
and Avalon Records, 1330 Railroad Ave. in Bellingham. They will also be available at the gate. Other FAQs can be found on the website. Dates for future festivals are there through 2023, so mark your calendars now! Volunteers for this year are all set, but if you want to get involved in future festivals, contact Lloyd via the website. As we concluded our chat, Peterson assured me that all ages are welcome at the festival (no pets allowed.) The audience demographic is in the neighborhood of being 63 years old, so as expected, the campgrounds are predominantly filled with RVs. There are 150 VIP spots closer to the venue. They sell out quickly, so don’t wait!

master luthier Andy Beech and decorated in a Seahawks theme by illustrator Frank Dooley. Pictures of the guitar, directions, details on volunteering, donations and other aspects of the festival can be found at www.birchbaymusicfestival.com. One unique aspect of the Birch Bay Music Festival is that entrance is free and the entire staff is volunteer. More than twenty bands have agreed to donate their time and talent as a draw, and the hope is that a lot of people will come to enjoy the music for a good cause. Instead of buying a ticket, guests can come and go as they like all weekend and make a donation while they patronize the festival vendors.

Seattle Youth Symphony Welcomes the Seattle Opera Academy to Marrowstone by Stephen Radcliffe, Marrowstone Music Festival Music Director Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Marrowstone Music Festival are proud to announce an extension of past partnerships with one of the region’s leading arts organizations. This partnership is the result of over five years of planning by the artistic and administrative staffs of both Seattle Opera and Seattle Youth Symphony
Orchestra, and represents the latest in a series of engaging collaborations between these organizations. This summer, the Marrowstone Music Festival and Seattle Opera will present two performances of Aaron Copland’s dramatic opera The Tender Land. These performances will be the capstone of a three-week residency by Seattle Opera Academy at Marrowstone. The Tender Land captures a portrait of a desperate America caught between a precarious hope and a looming despair. Between the drought of liberation and the thirst for escape, no one is spared from the painful
consequences of class and gender – regardless of where you may stand in the pecking order. In this inaugural collaboration with Seattle Opera, Marrowstone is set to combine a nationally recognized opera training academy with its already nationally recognized orchestral program, resulting in the richest possible summer curriculum of symphonic, chamber, and operatic music study. During these three weeks, young artists from across the United States will be guided by a distinguished faculty on the campus of Western Washington University with coaching, masterclasses with Seattle Opera mainstage artists, and workshops. These workshops will include business in the arts, vocal health and care, audition tips, and stage movement. We look forward to the launching of this seminal event in the history of the Marrowstone Music Festival and welcome its place in the long history of creative
collaborations, which have become a hallmark of this organization. Marrowstone Music Festival and Seattle Opera Academy will present Aaron Copland’s Opera The Tender Land at the WWU PAC Mainstage Theater on Fri., Aug. 4 at 7:30pm and Sat., Aug. 5 at 2pm. Admission prices are $40 (prime reserved seating); $30 (general admission); and $15 (students). Tickets may be purchased online at www.marrowstone.org or by calling the WWU Box Office at 360-650-6146. Photos courtesy of the Seattle Youth Symphony.

Castles and Labyrinths by April Metz de Montiel For over 35 years, the sandcastle competition in Birch Bay has graced the beaches with this temporal art exhibition. Made from natural elements found on the beach, and sculpted by hands of all sizes and abilities, the event was started by Paul Gaudette in the 1960s. In 1972, C-Shop owner Patrick Alesse took on the planning, constructing a legend that continues to this day. The sandcastle competition relies on tidal charts to determine the start of the construction at low tide. Mr. Alesse fondly remembers a day, years ago, when a bus full of royalty from Ethiopia arrived in Birch Bay. Children from the African country had come to tour the Northwest and had arrived on a Tuesday, when the competitions used to be held. It was a small town celebration celebrated with children who would carry the memories across the world. At that time, the contest was not judged, but later judges would carry flag poles to alert builders that they were on the way, as participants were scattered from Jacob’s Landing to Bay Center Resort. Everybody received a token of participation, and eventually, as the competition gained notoriety, the prizes got larger. Now hosted by the Blaine/Birch Bay Parks and Recreation Division #2, the weekend of the sandcastle competition welcomes vendors and sponsors. Food trucks and market tents are set up in Birch Bay Community Park, while the beach across the road is the central competition site. Sunday will be the second year of a new tradition of labyrinth building. All are invited to come play, eat, and participate.

2017 Northwest Raspberry Festival by Osa Hale Whatcom County is an agricultural powerhouse—a lush green jewel nestled in the valleys of Western Washington. Summer brings wave after wave of harvests; the asparagus and strawberries are followed by the onions and cherries, and so on, as professional farmers and independent gardeners have their hard work rewarded with delicious bounty. The thing that is ubiquitous throughout the region is the raspberries. With different varieties blooming throughout the warmer months, Whatcom County grows more raspberries than the rest of the country combined. This is a point of pride, and what’s more, a point of celebration. That’s where the Northwest Raspberry Festival comes in. The festival is held July 14-15 in Lynden, on Front Street. Gary Vis, the Executive Director at the Lynden Chamber of Commerce, explains that this time of year is an important part of the raspberry farming cycle. “The third week of July is [...] around the middle of the harvest which is just starting to slow down a little, so it’s a good time to take a little break, have a ton of fun, and enjoy meeting new friends and getting caught up with people you have known forever,” Vis said. “If we’re lucky, we even get a raspberry farmer or two to show up.” Lynden, Vis says, is an agricultural hub in the Pacific Northwest, and the effects of being a farming town reach out in all directions. Children learn important values by engaging in the hard yet rewarding work of berry picking. “Working in the berries teaches you how to work with others, which helps our young athletes and other school teams do very well competitively, and it gives them, and reminds those of us not in farming, an idea of how much work it is to produce a quality result,” Vis said. “Raspberries are a great reflection of the Lynden community mentality: Work hard, give it your best, and just go forward in faith.” There will be “Razz-tastic Sounds” in the form of live music playing on both days of the festival, starting in the late morning and extending into the early evening. Bands will be playing a variety of jazz, country, gospel, and rock n’ roll. Community members can also participate in or watch the Razz & Shine Cruise-In, a
parade of classic cars, as well as the Curt Maberry Memorial Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament (named for a beloved local berry farmer). Both are proud traditions of the festival. “The hoop players, locals, and visitors love to look at the cars, trucks, and motorcycles. It’s great to see the older generations share stories of their cars back in the day with their kids or grandkids,” Vis said. “The show connects people, connects generations, connects the community in a different way.” Of course, what would a Raspberry Festival be without some delicious berry bites? There will be a Raspberry Pancake Breakfast on July 15, from 7am-11am,

held as a fundraiser at, and for, the Lynden Community Center. Both days of the festival will feature “Berry Tasty Treats,” where the sweet pink berry (straight from Curt Maberry Farm) meets fresh-made ice cream from Edaleen Dairy, creating a summer treat straight from the farms that nobody can resist. There will also be a wide variety of local food trucks and vendors throughout the festival. The Northwest Raspberry Festival is a chance to celebrate something that makes Whatcom County exceptional. In doing so, community members are reminded that their hard work also makes this place special.

Fairhaven Steampunk Festival: Mr. Flip’s Carnival of Wonders and Curiosities by Marla Bronstein Dress in your best Victorian garb or come as you are to the Fairhaven Steampunk Festival: Mr. Flip’s Carnival of Wonders and Curiosities. Steampunk combines dress of the past and technology of the future. This event, slated for July 22 from 10am until 5pm at the Fairhaven Village Green, is open and free to the public. Nearby 10th Street will be closed to accommodate foot traffic for the bustling youthful local buskers/street performers, both glitter and henna tattoos, balloon critters and sellers of all things steampunk. The festival brings together music and performers, costumers and creators, authors and foodies, with a community that embraces and encourages difference. Eighteen year-old, recent high school graduate Lincoln Wallace attended his first festival at the age of 14. “It’s fun seeing all the different ways people interpret the basic concepts and ideas of steampunk while adding their own influences,” he says. He suggests to first timers, “I wouldn’t say you’d need to go all-out on a full costume and accessories. It is a lot of fun to get dressed up. I highly recommend at least donning a swanky hat or a sturdy pair of goggles.” The immensely talented Strangely Doesburg will emcee the stage performances that include The Rogue’s End (a Gypsy, Celtic, Pirate, Steampunk band). Additional MainStage entertainers include The Penny Stinkers, The Morris Street Dancers, and more. Want to get more involved? Applications for volunteers, buskers and merchants vending steampunk/Victorian related merchandise or antique dealers will be accepted until all spaces are full. Applications and contact info are on the webpage at www.bellinghamsteampunk.org/Festival.html or at the counter at SouthSide Trends in Fairhaven. Scheduled entertainment and vendors will also be updated on the website. Bring your friends and neighbors and enjoy or participate in the costume contest with categories for Children, Teens, Women, Men, Family/Group, and Most Creative. This event is made possible in part by a Tourism Promotion Grant from the City of Bellingham. Out-of-towners can take Amtrak directly to Fairhaven, then it’s a short walk to the Green.

Bigfooters Beware! Sasquatch has been sighted at the Skagit County Fair! by April Metz de Montiel “Beat Feet to the Skagit County Fair” is this year’s theme and organizers are hoping to lure Bigfoot to show his furry toes. Hosted by the Skagit County Parks, Recreation and Fair division, the annual event is August 9-12. Brian Young designed the logo that will fly high on banners, featuring the fuzzy behemoth, and visitors will see the theme and logo incorporated into 4-H presentations and barn decorations. Celebrating the agricultural heritage and the various products produced in the Skagit Valley, Skagit Valley Fair visitors will be entertained by local acts and vendors, livestock shows, and carnival games and rides. On the Main Stage, off the Midway, X-Treme Air Dogs will splash into town with their canine athletes, scouring the land and sea for BigFoot. Sardis Raptor’s Birds of Prey will take to the sky, trying got get a bird’s-eye view of Sasquatch, if he’s hiding! The small stage near the food court is reserved for the pride of the community, allowing local artists and musicians to show off their talents. The Skagit County Fair has been hosting annual events since 1898, and this year is no exception. Fair Lead, Aric Gaither, says “the Skagit County Fair is
the jewel of county fairs! 70-75% of the food and market vendors are local, and most of the entertainment is provided by area performers and artists. You won’t find a national gig on the main stage, but that is what makes this event so unique.”

crafts and 4-H show animals. A model train set is also a draw as well as the local farm implement dealers that will have their latest models on display. Back by popular demand is an exhibit showcasing the farming of potatoes and berries. The fair even made art history a few years ago when a famous mural by William Cummings was found stored in a barn. Depicting a scene of the interconnectedness of a working agricultural community, its preciousness is compounded by the fact that the current economy is still based on the same way of life. According to the Washington State University extension, agriculture is the number one industry of Skagit County, selling over $300 million of produce and livestock on just under approximately 90,000 acres of land. During the four-day event, Skagit County expects to host 25,000 visitors. Photos courtesy of the Skagit County Fair.

Communities Pulling Together by Courtney Kendall Since 1989 with the Paddle to Seattle, Tribal Canoe Journeys have been a way for Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest to revive and celebrate canoe and Native culture. Tribes and nations come together to paddle—or pull—to the designated landing spot where they are received by the host tribe, and land according to traditional protocol, followed by days of celebrations. Here in our northern stretch of the Salish Sea, the G’ana’k’w Family has continued to put together their own canoe journey as a means to involve even more tribal communities.
participate. The journey officially begins on September 1, when the families set up camp at Lighthouse Marine Park. Northern canoe and southern canoe (note deer head).

As Ron Snyder explains, the larger canoe journey is an expensive one. In an effort to keep Native traditions open to more communities and youth, the G’ana’k’w Family has organized their own canoe journey with this year’s theme of “Communities Pulling (paddling) Together.” Ron Snyder and Cathy Taggett, members of the G’ana’k’w Family, have been coordinating the annual canoe journey to Blaine since 2015. The journey, Ron says, is “the way it might have been 300 years ago,” and is a way for everyone to see “actual traditions carried out for the public to witness.” The journey will take place over Labor Day Weekend, September 2-4, and everyone is invited to come witness the landing and festivities afterward. Along with the G’ana’k’w Family, the Swinomish, Semiahmoo, Lummi, Carver’s Camp, Three Sisters of Chilliwack, and Blue Heron Nations have been invited to

On the 2nd, as a part of Blaine’s Discovery Days, the Haandei I Jin, a Tlingit dance group, will dance at 1:15pm. The canoe families will launch their canoes at 2:30pm and arrive in Blaine at approximately 5:30pm. They will land according to traditional landing protocol, with traditional language being spoken and Lawrence Solomon of the Lummi Council officially welcoming them to the shores of Blaine. That evening there will be a campfire and singing open to the public. On September 3, everyone is invited to Blaine to witness more traditional celebrations, singing, and dancing along Marine Drive. At 2pm, the tribes invite all watercraft—whether a rowboat, kayak, canoe, or sailboat—to join the Native canoes and explore Drayton Harbor, journeying up Dakota Creek with the returning salmon as far as the rising tide allows.

On Labor Day, the community is invited to join the canoes again at 12pm for a short paddle to Semiahmoo Spit, across from the Alaska Packers’ Cannery Museum. Semiahmoo Resort will have kayaks to rent, and the historic Plover Ferry will be in operation that weekend. There will also be plenty of parking at the museum. Everyone is invited to bring their own picnic, visit the museum, and enjoy the company. “Join us, join the canoes,” Ron urges. “We want to build bridges to all communities,” Ron says of the canoe journey and weekend. “There will be a water mosaic of activities of Native traditions,” which are free and open to all. For Ron, Cathy, and the G’ana’k’w Family, this annual tradition is a way to share their rich Native culture and heritage with Native youth and the wider community. “This is living history happening right before them.” To learn more, be sure to attend Ron and Cathy’s presentation at the Blaine Library on September 1, at 4pm. For additional information prior to September, contact the Blaine Visitor Center at 360-332-4544 or Ron and Cathy at 360-332-8082. Photos by Cathy Taggett.
