Get the Blues in Deming by Margaret Bikman The Mount Baker Rhythm & Blues Festival, now in its 23rd year, and organized by Lloyd “Keeping the Blues Alive” Peterson, runs Aug. 3-5, on the Deming Log Show Grounds, 3295 Cedarville Road, just west of Deming, and showcases top blues artists. In the past, such blues greats as Johnny Winter, Curtis Salgado, Javina Magness, Elvis Bishop, and Pinetop Perkins have graced the outdoor stage. The fact that Peterson has the connections to gather such musicians to the small town of Deming won the festival the 2013 Blues Foundation’s “Keeping the Blues Alive” award for “Blues Festival of The Year.” When he accepted the award, he praised the foundation’s recognition of the Pacific Northwest, “a place that is not traditionally a blues part of the country.” Serbian born Ana Popovic has made a Sonny Landreth is from southwest This is not just a music festival; each year, Peterson donates a name for herself in the male dominated Louisiana and is a Blues guitar significant amount of money to people in need in the world of solo guitar. Singer / songwriter, guitarist Albert Castiglia (pronounced “ka-steel-ya”) was born in New York City to a Cuban mother and Italian father. He has performed with some of the biggest names in Blues. 2018 Drayton Harbor Music Festival Visit Blaine July 8-14 for the 17th annual Drayton Harbor Music Festival! An internationally known, world-class music faculty will teach students during the day and perform in concert for the community at night. The July 8 Kick-Off Concert features Jovino Santos Neto, Charlie Porter, and Gregor Huebner. Marrowstone Music Festival: 75 Years of Exceptional Music by Courtney Kendall Western Washington University may have bid goodbye to thousands of students departing for the summer, but July is anything but a sleepy month for this campus. Among all the various summer programs occurring throughout the sprawling grounds, one stands out for its 75-year history of bringing world-class faculty and students together in a two-week orchestral training program: Marrowstone Music Festival, a program of Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. Applications started rolling in between December and March, and roughly 180 musicians between the ages of 14 and 25 will have received their acceptance letters and start converging from all over the United States and beyond this summer. From July 22 to August 5, these budding musicians will immerse themselves in intensive study, rehearsal, and performance under the direction of top-level conductors and artist-faculty of Marrowstone Music Festival. “Each week of Marrowstone feels like a quarter of college,” says Coltan Foster, Interim Marrowstone Coordinator for Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. “The energy—there’s really nothing like it.” As a bassoon player, Coltan is no stranger to music or Marrowstone Music Festival. Coltan became a work-study student at Marrowstone when he was a sophomore at Western Washington University (WWU), serving as a festival counselor. Ever since then, Marrowstone has been a part of Coltan’s summers in a variety of roles. “It was the most impactful music experience,” Coltan says of his time as a student at Marrowstone. “It was a big eye-opener and a real kind of wake-up call.”

For two weeks, Marrowstone students practically eat, breathe, and sleep music—with a little non-music fun thrown in now and then. Their day begins at 9:15am and progresses with rehearsals and performance in full orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and master classes. Speaking of the master classes, Coltan describes them as “a very special part of what we do.” In a master class, students volunteer to play an excerpt of a piece in front of an audience. A faculty member then coaches and critiques while the audience listens, giving both student and audience valuable feedback and knowledge. Marrowstone faculty are internationally-acclaimed performers and artists in their own right, and the chance to study with them is an amazing opportunity. For the most part, Marrowstone faculty are consistent summer to summer. “There’s a family vibe with faculty and staff. They just love coming to Bellingham. It’s a treat for the faculty, getting to work with students who are so eager to learn, and so engaged.” This phenomenal music experience is not simply limited to faculty and students, however. An important part of Marrowstone are the public performances put on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday both weeks at the Performing Arts Center on WWU’s campus. The Faculty Chamber Music performance is scheduled Thursday evenings at 7:30pm on July 26 and August 2. “It’s such a special experience for the students to see them, too,” says

Coltan. “[The students] get to see them practice what they preach.” Student performances are held Saturdays at 7:30pm on July 28 and August 4, and on Sundays at 3pm on July 29 and August 5. Saturday performances will be the Chamber Orchestra, and the Marrowstone Festival Orchestra perform on Sunday. Coltan says that a student performance is one of the best you can go to: “Energetically, you can’t get any better.” He explains how amazing it is to see “the enthusiasm and engagement from students who are putting so much time and effort” into their craft. Haynie Opry Shines Spotlight on Chuck Berry and Glen Campbell by Margaret Bikman Haynie Grange, the oldest active grange in Whatcom County, was chartered April 15, 1906. The small community of Haynie is located east of Blaine and north of Custer at 3344 Haynie Road, just west of the intersection of Valley View. The Grange also hosts the annual Haynie Opry, which runs March through August. The Opry is a concert series that started in 2005 by Matt Audette near where he grew up on Haynie Road. He attended Custer Grade School and graduated from Blaine High School. Audette spent many years touring as a country musician before settling in Bellingham. But he wanted to create an all-ages venue to share the music he loves. He founded the Haynie Opry after attending the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and a couple of visits to Branson, Mo., and thought that a smaller version would be good for the community in Whatcom County as a place where people could go and listen to music in theater style, without alcohol, and bring their kids. “People can experience a down-home atmosphere, with good music, nostalgic memories, refreshments, and a modest price, with one or two acts,” he says. His current band is The Circle of Friends Band, the Opry’s in-house musicians, featuring Rom Reiss on drums, Karl

Chuck Berry (October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017) American singer, songwriter, musician, was one of the pioneers of rock and roll music.

can enjoy songs like “Maybellene,” “Johnny B. Good,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Gentle On My Mind,” and “Wichita Lineman.” Berry, who died in 2017 at age 90, is considered one of the pioneers of rock music and was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986. He played with Carl Perkins, The Everly Brothers, and Buddy Holly, among others. His music influenced such musicians as John Lennon, Ted Nugent, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan. Campbell, who also died in 2017, played on recordings by The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, Nat “King” Cole, Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra. He won numerous Grammy Awards, and performed in such films as Any Which Way You Can and the 1969 version of True Grit. After he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010, he embarked on his “Goodbye Tour,” with three of his children playing backup. His final album, Adios, was released in June 2017; Campbell died about a month later. Audette favors country music, but he says he likes all styles; he says that the Opry helps keep the legacy of famous artists alive, which is something he loves. Performances are at 7pm on July 13 and 14. Doors open at 6pm. There’s also a gospel matinee at 3pm on July 14 with the Circle of Friends band. Doors open at 2pm. The band also performs at 7pm Aug. 10, featuring standards in a variety of styles, as well as Audette’s original tunes. On Aug. 11, there’s a “Rhythm and Blues” night, featuring the trio Flashback. There’ll be a repeat performance of the Berry-Campbell tribute at 7pm on Aug. 25 at the Mount Vernon Senior Center, 1401 Cleveland Ave. Tickets cost $10 at the door for the evening shows, and $5 for the matinees. Whether your dream is creating the concept, writing the script, directing, doing the cinematography, acting, or any aspect of the art and craft of filmmaking, there’s a group that can help make that dream happen: Bellingham Film Script to Screen. They shot it in 12 weeks in and around Melbourne on a meager budget of $350,000. Mel Gibson, an unknown actor, was hired because he had bruises from a bar fight the night before and they “needed freaks.” They had to use a real motorcycle gang because they had no budget to hire actors who could ride bikes. Birch Bay Rocks August Long Weekend for Charity by Justin Hawkinson Do you love animals, live music, and parties on the beach? The 2018 Birch Bay Music Festival will celebrate all those things and more on August 3, 4, and 5 at the former Homestead Golf Course on Birch Bay Drive. This 8th annual festival features food trucks, craft vendors, beer garden, t-shirt sales and a raffle. Proceeds from all these sources will raise money for Main The Birch Bay Music Festival Board of Directors. Street Mutt Rescue and Lean on Me Service Dogs, two local charities devoted to helping animals and the people who love them. Donations will also be accepted on their behalf. The Skagit Valley Highland Games! by Deborah M. Bernard Aye, lads and lassies, it’s time once again for the Scottish 3-ring circus: the 24th annual Skagit Valley Highland Games! Ye don’t have to be Scottish to enjoy this event, which is a celebration that will have ye grinnin’ from ear to ear! Gather your clan, even your dogs, and head to Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon from 9am-5pm July 14 and 15! With lots of live music, dance, sheepdog trials, children’s events, athletic events, a beer and whisky garden, it truly has something for everyone! The event is produced by the Celtic Arts Foundation, a Mount Vernon-based nonprofit. Executive Director Skye Richendrfer says, “I like to tell people we’re in the ‘celebration business.’ Our mission is simply to entertain and inspire—to put smiles on people’s faces by providing a fun event.” Guests enjoy the cacophony of sound created by bagpipes and drums, the brightly colored Scottish tartans, the smells of the Scottish meat pies and fair food, celebrating the history and traditions of Scotland, and so much more! Clan, culture, and music tents offer guests opportunities to experience Celtic history in a variety of ways. Tradition is everywhere! Dogs—wellbehaved and on-leash—are welcome, because animals have played a vital role in the Scottish culture, forming a strong bond through sheepdog herding, hunting, and providing companionship.

This year’s headline performer is Finlay MacDonald of Glasgow, Scotland. Finlay has blazed a trail as one of Scotland’s finest exponents of contemporary and traditional Piping. His experience playing with pipe bands, world famous ensembles, and some of Britain’s top folk bands has brought him around the world, including a part in Robert Duvall’s film “The Cup,” where he worked with Duvall and Michael Keaton. Finlay is the Head of Piping Studies at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The festivities for the weekend begin on Friday evening, July 13, at the Littlefield Celtic Center in Mount Vernon, home of the Celtic Arts Foundation, with the Gathering of the Clans Dinner, a fun evening with dinner and an exciting musical performance with special guest Stuart Liddell, Pipe Major of the current World Champion Inverary & District Pipe Band. by April Metz de Montiel The Bellingham Relay for Life will be held at Battersby Field, adjacent to Whatcom Middle School on Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7. Over 400 participants, volunteers and cancer survivors, are expected to arrive at Bellingham’s Battersby Field on Friday, July 6 for the Whatcom Relay for Life. Organizers hope to raise $160,000 from local teams who will be setting up overnight camps, selling items, sponsoring activities and enjoying entertainment in support of the American Cancer Society. Previous to the weekend event, local participants will have been gathering donations and them come together to show support for those who are battling cancer, those who have survived and honor those who have died. Local cancer survivors begin the race with a victory lap wearing Bellingham purple t-shirts and medals. The relay will then continue for the next 18 Relay for Life hours including the Luminaria ceremony, a silent vigil to honor those July 6 & 7, 2018 who died from the disease. Battersby Field The Relay for Life was begun in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma Girard & F Streets oncologist, to raise awareness for cancer and show solidarity for patients Bellingham, WA suffering the side effects from treatment. The race was held day and night, as Dr. Klatt understood that his patients never stopped suffering. The Relay for Life then became a grassroots community-led initiative on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Jana Phillips, Community Development Manager for the Western Region states, “The relay is hard to explain. You have to see it and feel it to understand the impact of this event.” The American Cancer Society is second, only to the US government, in funding research for the cure for cancer. Monies raised will benefit our local chapters of Road to Recovery — volunteer corps of drivers who assist patients getting to their appointments – as well as free wigs, mastectomy prosthetics, and lodging for treatments performed out of the area.
