Jones’ 12-piece big band one last time this season. For this gig Ron has managed to add trumpeter Chuck Findley to join his fellow Tonight Show veteran tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb and the rest of this great band. You may not know it, but you have probably heard both these guys on the radio often, as they were indemand session players who helped out talents like Steely Dan and Tom Waits. On June 23, Mount Baker Theatre will present Seven Things I’ve Learned: An Evening with Ira Glass. Glass is returning to Bellingham, and is bringing his brand new show on storytelling. If you listen to public radio or podcasts, chances are good you already know the iconic voice and words of Ira Glass. Glass is a five-time Peabody Award winner and the creator, producer, and host of This American Life. If you have never listened, you should. Don’t just take my word for it. Over 2 million people listen every week on their local National Public Radio stations. Glass describes This American Life as true, but not boring, stories that are entertaining and funny, with surprising plot twists. Seven Things I’ve Learned gives Glass the chance to share lessons from his life and career in storytelling: What inspires him to create? What drives his passion? How have failures and successes informed his decisions? During his presentation, Ira Glass will create stories live onstage and help his audience better follow the creative process of one of our foremost storytellers. The last time he was at MBT, I went to go hear him speak. A long time fan, I had only recently discovered his essay The Gap. It changed my life for the better. I snuck backstage to try to meet him. Words of advice: Take a good look at his headshot. He’s an unassuming gentleman. Most people would recognize his voice but probably don’t know what he looks like, making it easy to walk right by him. Which I did, and will kick myself for that for the rest of my life. If history is a good teacher, tickets will sell out well before the doors open. Peter Yarrow Plays Solo Show Friday, June 29, 7:30pm. All seats: $21.50 If you don’t know the name Peter Yarrow, maybe you would recognize his soothing melodic voice from the group Peter, Paul and Mary, the popular folk singing trio of the 60s. Yarrow’s voice is still relevant at the age of 80 as he takes the MBT stage. When I was in high school, a friend would literally burst into tears whenever we played their recording of Puff, the Magic Dragon (which, he asserts, is not about marijuana). Back in March 2018, fans of Peter Yarrow were disappointed when emergency surgery forced him to miss participating in Lonesome Traveler when it was presented at MBT. Amy Guerra,

We gave patrons the choice of attending the show without him or getting a refund. Peter Yarrow then stepped up and offered to come back and perform a solo show so that people who were excited to see him still could. Those who purchased tickets to the original show have been sent new tickets by our Box Office (and should call if they haven’t

received them).” All remaining seats are on sale for the price of $21.50. At the time of writing, tickets were still available to both shows. Sales are expected to pick up as performance dates approach. Hallie Ford Museum of Art in partnership with the Crow’s Shadow Institute of the Arts, chronicles the history of Crow’s Shadow over the past 25 years as it developed into an important native printmaking atelier in Pendleton, Oregon. Burlington’s Medical Legends History Exhibit – Burlington’s Medical

Legends is a history exhibit on display (through June) at the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, 520 E. Pickett House Museum Tour – Come

tour the Historic Pickett House Museum where Major General George E. Pickett, CSA of Civil War fame lived and loved. This home was built in Bellingham on Peabody hill in 1856 with planks sawn at the 1853 Roeder-Peabody Mill on Whatcom Creek. This is where U.S. Army Captain George E. Pickett married a Haida woman and raised their son, James Tilton Pickett before the Civil War. Pickett’s house has changed ownership many times. Hattie Strother, who lived here from 1889 until her death in 1936, deeded the house to the Washington State Historical Society and the contents to the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, Whatcom Chapter 5. After her death, the house became an historical monument, is listed on the Washington Heritage Register, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Spectacular Shakespeare (and more) on Vancouver’s English Bay by Margaret Bikman Vancouver, B.C.’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival launches its 29th season June 6 through Sept. 22, with four play productions and a range of special events in the spectacular waterfront setting of Vanier Park. Refreshments are available before the show and during intermission, including wine, ice-cream sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, and meat and vegetarian sandwiches. Christopher Gaze, founder of Bard on the Beach, says the festival is “fun, romantic, and intriguing.” More than 100,000 people come each year, he says, and it’s really “no-fear Shakespeare.” Ben Elliott, in his eighth season with Bard, says that on the mainstage, “there are cool things, like as the show progresses, the light changes. A sunset becomes the backdrop of the play, and then followed by that are the glimmering lights on the North Shore.” Elliott says he’s stoked about the shows this summer.

“I’m especially excited about As You Like It because I’m also acting as musical director. It’s a Beatles’ version, with around 25 Beatles tunes incorporated into the show. All the music is live, and the band is made up of the actors. So you can imagine the amount of talent I get to be around is immense. Not only are they trained Shakespearean actors, but accomplished musicians as well.” Don’t know much about Shakespeare? Never been to a live production? Kate Besworth, who appears in “Macbeth” and “Lysistrata,” offers reasons why you should make the trip up north. “We are distracted; we are disconnected. Being in a room full of humans and watching live theater is as connected as it gets. As an audience we get to connect with stories that still resonate while sharing an experience that will be gone in a couple of hours. Living in the moment and watching theater go hand-in-hand.” Gaze says that when you come to a show, you don’t feel like you should “know more,” or “dress up.” It’s Vancouver, after all. But each production is high quality, with the best directors and actors from North America (mostly Canadian, of course). Bosworth says “The clarity with which the performers speak and live within the text is what makes these plays understandable. Shakespearean text is heightened language; think of it like poetry. Imagine if we could all express ourselves so eloquently! Ultimately, the onus is on the performer to be clear. All the audience need do is to listen.”

Bellingham TheatreWorks’ The Wolves – In Sarah DeLappe’s Pulitzer-

nominated play The Wolves, nine high school female soccer players bring the audience into their conversations. Through their interactions during pre-game warm-ups, we are shown the inner worlds of these young women as they grapple with late adolescence. Bellingham TheatreWorks will be presenting The Wolves continuing into June. META Brings the Joy of Acting to Camp Korey by Courtney Kendall When two non-profits with missions geared towards serving youth come together, it can only mean a beautiful thing. A beautiful thing is exactly what Conrad Askland, executive director of META Performing Arts, uses to describe META’s upcoming collaboration with Camp Korey. Tim Rose founded Camp Korey in 2005 in honor of his son, Korey, who lost his battle with bone cancer at 18. Tim created a camp that strives to provide children living with life-altering medical conditions, and their families, with a fun and safe camp experience. Children and families are given a joyful and adventurous experience in a camp environment with the specialized medical staff they need. Through support of donors, community partners, and volunteers, Camp Korey remains free to all families. Today Camp Korey is an official member of founder Paul Newman’s Serious Fun Children’s Network, and serves thousands of children and families with summer camp sessions, family weekends in spring and fall, young adult retreats, and their in-hospital program, Camp to You. In 2016 they purchased a

200-acre property in Mount Vernon that increased the amount of campers they could serve, as well as the amount of medical conditions they could support. Camp Korey reached out to META in search of a way that they could collaborate with the performing arts non-profit. META, an all-volunteer organization based in Skagit County, provides youth with theatrical training and the chance to perform with experienced actors in two performances during the year. META’s vision is to utilize theatre to “give young people tools to better understand themselves and their culture.” Children from as far away as Bellingham and Everett come to participate and learn from META. Camp Korey came to META at the perfect time: “[We were] looking at areas that we haven’t been serving,” said Conrad Askland. The proposal was to offer acting lessons one day a week during Camp Korey’s summer program. When the proposal was taken to the board, the decision was clear: “A couple of the [META] board members were in tears when they heard [Camp Korey’s] mission.” The META board was so moved

by Camp Korey’s story that they decided to fund the experience themselves. “This allows META to reach children who wouldn’t normally get to have this experience,” Conrad says, and to give Camp Korey participants “actual acting experience with professional theater teachers.” When META asked whether the focus should be on education or fun, Camp Korey answered “fun with some education.” “Our goal,” says Conrad, “is to give them a positive experience.” While this summer will be their first time trying these classes at Camp Korey, META and Conrad are excited about the possibilities it brings. Conrad started helping META out in 2006—basically whenever he was back in town from his travels as a musical director. “I’ve been helping with their overall vision and where they want to go next,” Conrad explains. Reaching out to underserved youth and new growth areas has also led to an additional pilot program META finished in May. “It’s a five-week acting workshop by invitation only for youth that auditioned for Into the Woods, but were not cast. We wanted to help kids that really want to be involved,” says Conrad. META reasons that, “if they were brave enough to audition,” they really want to learn. META is always looking for volunteers, directors, and board members to help support their mission and vision. Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema Summer Line-up Big screen movies and a variety of fun entertainers will be featured at this summer’s Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema series presented by Ben Kinney & Keller Williams Realty. Now in its nineteenth season of Saturday night movies, the series kicks off on June 23 with the 1985 adventurecomedy The Goonies followed by the superhero hit Wonder Woman on June 30. The series continues in July and August. In true Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema tradition, The Princess Bride will be featured at the series finale on Aug. 25. More than movies, the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema includes a variety of live entertainment including musical performers, cirque shows, and even an improv comedy show. Movies are shown at dusk on the 30-foot screen at the Village Green in the historic Fairhaven community of south Bellingham. Events are rain or shine, with ground seating available on the grass and very limited chair seating on the surrounding brick areas.
