Jazz Celebration VI: Jazz Ladies by Stephanie Dethlefs When Whatcom County resident Robert Storms (pictured) was in high school, he began a lifelong pursuit of entering 500 original songs into copyright. In 2008, he achieved this goal and launched the annual Jazz Celebration, bringing local jazz artists together to perform some of his music. The sixth annual installment takes place Saturday, March 8 with local jazz women taking center stage. Jazz Celebration VI coincides with International Women’s Day, which has been observed since the early 1900s. “The whole concert is centered upon the talented ladies of our county that perform as jazz singers and instrumentalists,” says Storms. “Men will be serving in back-up roles only.” Headlining Jazz Celebration VI is the award-winning Cheryl Hodge Trio. Becky Billock and her family make their way from Pittsburgh, PA to perform. Billock, Storms’ daughter-in-law, is a classically trained pianist who will perform ragtime pieces. Storms taught music in the Ferndale schools for 38 years including band, chorus, general music, stage band and elementary school band. He has lived in Whatcom County since graduating from Western Washington University in 1960. As a musician, he has performed in Whatcom County for over 50 years. Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts presents Lydia Pense & Cold Blood Lydia Pense & Cold Blood debuted at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 1969. During the span of six original albums, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood (pictured) helped, along with Tower Of Power, forge their own specific brand of funk/soul and R&B that became known as East Bay Grease. That music still holds up today, proving that great music is timeless and will continue to inspire generations to come. Cold Blood is one of the original R&B horn bands from the late ‘60s / early ‘70s that exemplified the “East Bay Grease” melding of funk & rock with blues and jazz elements. Lydia Pense has been compared to Janis Joplin, but is a true original and a pioneer in the women’s rock movement. Lydia Pense and Cold Blood continue to fill halls with cheering, dancing, footstomping fans. Pense can still shout like a ‘60s soul diva and purr a slow blues tune with spine-tingling subtlety. Cold Blood features a stellar group of musicians who have been playing together for nearly 20 years, including Steve Dunne on guitar, Steve Salinas on keyboards, a gritty-growling horn section comprised of Rich Armstrong and Rob Zuckerman along with a stellar rhythm section featuring Evan Palmerston on bass and Donny Baldwin on drums. Opening for Cold Blood will be local musical sensation Margaret Wilder. Known for her high-energy fusion of blues, rock and funk, Wilder has enthralled audiences throughout the Northwest and Canada. Don’t miss this unforgettable night at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon. The concert takes place on Saturday, March 29 at 7:30pm. For tickets ($35 / $30 / $25 / $15), visit the Lincoln Theatre’s website at www.lincolntheatre.org. The Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts provides financial support to the arts community. Interfaith Coalition’s Hope Auction to be held March 22 Among the many charity auctions Whatcom County hosts each year, Interfaith Coalition’s Hope Auction on Saturday, March 22 is surely one of the most unique. What makes it special? The Hope Auction, now in its 25th year, features nearly 400 live and silent auction items, most donated by Interfaith’s member congregations. Interfaith Coalition, a non-profit organization of over 40 congregations of all faiths, supports housing and healthcare for those in need in our community. Congregations and their members contribute items such as homemade desserts and seasonal flower arrangements for a year, weekend trips to a spa, Seahawks and Mariners outings, gourmet dinners and pizza parties in private homes, and much more. Handcrafted jewelry includes beautiful pieces specially selected by Congregation Beth Israel members on trips to Israel. Books, clothing creations, collectibles, a Trek bicycle, framed photographs are just a few of the items auction-goers look forward to discovering. Themed gift baskets run the gamut from popular “Downton Abbey” to Northwest gardening, baby toys and gourmet foods. Original fine art, Art Deco paired lamps, gift cards to popular local businesses, and even seven nights in a Maui condo are some of the treasures to discover. With an affordable price – $45 includes dinner – the auction is proud to feature something for everyone’s taste and budget, all, of course, for a great cause. The fun begins at 5:30pm at the Best Western Lakeway Inn in Bellingham. Proceeds from this year’s auction will help Interfaith expand its homeless housing program by opening two new homes in Ferndale. These, along with nine other homes in Bellingham, provide safe and comfortable shortterm shelter for about 40 families with children each year. Call Interfaith at 360-734-3983 for tickets or to donate auction items, and join us for a lively and entertaining evening that helps our most vulnerable neighbors. But don’t wait: it’s always a sold-out event!

Herman Miller 4-H Horse Park 20th Anniversary Auction to be held March 22 The Herman Miller 4-H Horse Park began in 1993 when a man named Herman Miller donated 30 acres to create a safe place for youth to develop their equine skills. The Herman Miller Park mission statement is to provide an environment for 4-H education and awareness to 4-H members, leaders, and parents and to provide a facility to be shared with other local youth organizations. Herman Miller, a past 4-H leader and recipient of the Whatcom County 4-H Alumni Award and Friends of 4-H for Washington State Award, has since passed away, but his generous donation has created a park utilized by hundreds of 4-H members and their families as well as other members of our community.

Since the park’s inception in 1993, the facility has been developed to include many features. Land was cleared for a parking area, an outdoor riding arena and a substantial building. Other projects included a gazebo, bridge project, trailblazing, trail mapping and landscaping. All these projects have been made possible by donations through various fundraisers and by many hours of volunteer labor from both organizations and individuals including Boy Scouts, high school seniors, local 4-H Horse clubs and other clubs such as the Whatcom County Chapter of the Backcountry Horseman. The park is currently being used for horse shows, schooling both in the arena and on the trails, and for meetings. There are many projects planned to continue to develop the park. The building has restrooms under construction, slated for completion in 2014. The future of the park includes a plan to continue to develop the facility for use by youth organizations or 4-H clubs, including non-equine clubs and to have a safe place available to hold activities such as livestock and equine

shows, judging contests, clinics and meetings. The 20th Anniversary Auction, celebrating 20 years of service to the community, will be held Sat., March 22, at the NW Washington Fair Expo Building, 1775 Front St. in Lynden. A silent auction starts at 5pm and the live auction starts at 7pm. All proceeds will be used to finish the educational building and its upkeep. The hope is to be able to utilize the space to teach children in their various interests to become productive members of the community in conjunction with teaching them about their horses and the different ways they can grow in that interest. The educational building should be open for rental to the greater 4-H community in the near future. For more information, contact Dani Muhlbach at 360-398-2019 or Sandy Olson at 360-592-1123.

Experiencing Ghost Ranch in New Mexico Through Art by Osa Hale In September, eight painters journeyed to Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, the home of esteemed painter Georgia O’Keeffe. Trish Harding, a Bellingham painter and art instructor, was the leader of this creative expedition. She explained that the location had been carefully chosen to inspire the artists. “The purpose of the trip was to immerse ourselves into the very essence and character of the place that is an old dude ranch, filled with stories of cattle rustling, murder, mesas, dinosaurs, and art,” Harding said. “We were able to pick up the earth under our feet, feel the intense sun of the dry desert, and experience the wet of the storm which dumped buckets of enormous rain drops.” The theme of the 10-day retreat was en plein air painting: the practice of painting outdoors, utilizing the natural light, famously used by the likes of Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. The artists experienced the land as they brought it to life in their paintings. Leaving the desert, each artist had between five and 12 small paintings and what Harding described as a “handful of studio work” that had been created during the trip.

Molly-Mae Harding hiking Box Canyon.

The group included Bellingham artists Molly-Mae Harding, Lynn Wilson, Kathleen Walsh, Pat Burman, Pat Stiles, and Harding herself. Seattleite Karen Birchfield and Longview local Debra Chase completed the ensemble. Harding says the Washington artists were enchanted and inspired by the New Mexico scenery. “We were bombarded from every direction with such awesome images that our state of excitation was constant, and therefore we all painted entire days away,” Harding explained. The group also explored the area on foot and horseback. By getting to know the hills, mesas, lakes, and canyons, the artists were able to add mystery and responsiveness to their work, Harding

said. It was this connection to the place that truly brought the paintings to life. “We were able to get close to the cactus and junipers, see up-close the bugs and enormous moths that we originally thought were hummingbirds, the dry creek beds, and desert turtles,” Harding said. “This all gave us a connection and authenticity that cannot be experienced in a painting when an artist paints from a photograph.” This is just one of the beautiful mesas that surround Ghost Ranch.

This painting by Bellingham artist, Lynn Wilson, is a pastel and is yet another mesa across from the one in the photograph. This mesa, it is said, was never painted by O’Keeffe, although she could see it from the back of her hacienda.

The result is colorful, engaging works of art that will draw the viewer into the landscape. Studio UFO Gallery will display the plein air paintings and studio work throughout March, available to view by appointment. The display will include the artists’ statements, describing their experiences in New Mexico and the journey’s influence on their work. The best time to come see the display, Harding said, is during the reception on Friday, March 7, which coincides with Bellingham’s Downtown Art Walk, and will be free and open to the public. The reception, which will begin at 6pm and continue until 10pm, will take place at Studio UFO Gallery, at 301 W. Holly Street. It will feature live music by Tom Harding.

Lyric Light Opera presents Peter Pan by Stephanie Dethlefs “I am Youth, I am Joy, I am Freedom!” shouts the boy who never grows up. This exuberant energy is what Lyric Light Opera aims to provide audience members as it opens Peter Pan at McIntyre Hall, March 22 through April 6. Peter Pan is the favorite family tale of Peter, his mischievous fairy sidekick Tinkerbell, and the Darling children who face adventures amongst a ticking crocodile, fierce Indians, bungling buccaneers and, of course, the villainous pirate Captain Hook. The Lyric Light Opera’s presentation of Broadway’s timeless musical includes 30 stellar cast members of varying ages, including performers from Seattle, Gig Harbor, Bellingham, Bellevue, Kirkland and throughout the I-5 corridor. The production is accompanied by a full orchestra and boasts a stage designed by renowned set designer Steven Craig. And lest you be concerned that the performers will have their feet firmly on the ground, do not despair. ZFX, the company responsible for flying rock stars around their stages, will be on hand to lift the actors up – with the help of some pixie dust. “The magic of Peter Pan is in the idea that youthful hopes and dreams can sweep you away at any stage of life,” says Mueller. “Nothing makes this more fun than flying.” General Director Brenda Mueller and a group of fellow theater enthusiasts founded Lyric Light Opera in 2006 with the mission of enriching people’s lives through achieving excellence in musical theater with a new model of casting. A unique blend of the expertise and skills of professional actors and the enthusiasm of young amateur local performers provides a tightly bonded cast. “This model has enabled me to produce quality shows rivaling some of the best in Seattle,” explains Mueller. “Amateur performers are taught by the best in the business,

and professionals are challenged by the amateurs to look back to the roots of their love of performing and to find the original energy and enthusiasm which inspire their art.” Past productions include The Music Man, Camelot, The King and I, The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, Brigadoon, and Annie Get Your Gun. Performances at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon will run Saturdays and Sundays, March 22 through April 6. Saturday performances begin at 7:30pm, Sunday matinees at 2pm. A Fine and Pleasant Show — Behrens Channels McManus Again by Christopher Key My late Aunt Maggie got married for the first time at age 80 to a man she’d only known for a couple of months. When asked why she was in such a rush, she replied, “I’m pregnant.” Maggie could well have been a character from one of the tales of Patrick F. McManus. Indeed, it was Maggie who introduced me to McManus’ first collection, A Fine and Pleasant Misery. She might as well have introduced me to crack, which is somewhat less addictive than McManus. There are now 23 books that have sold well over six million copies, and readers all over the world know characters like Retch Sweeney and Rancid Crabtree. McManus’ stories of growing up in the mythical town of Blight, Idaho, are among the very few literary efforts that will make me laugh until I get a case of what my grandmother called “the can’t-help-its.” Can you injure yourself laughing at a cookbook? You can if it’s Whatchagot Stew, written with McManus’ sister, known as “The Troll.” The humorist is also the originator of The McManus Principle: “The reason I never get anything done is that I always have to do something else first. But before I do that, I have to do something else. And so on. All my life I have been working backwards. Now I can’t even remember what I first set out to do.” Tim Behrens, who claims to be McManus’ indentured actor, is responsible for four stage versions of McManus work. The two have now collaborated on a fifth production distilled from the best of the previous four. It’s called Scrambled McManus and it’s coming to Mount

Humorist Pat McManus and his indentured actor, Tim Behrens.

Vernon’s Lincoln Theatre on Saturday, March 22. Stories in the new collection include many audience favorites: The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw; The Grasshopper Trap; The Camping Trip with 100-YearOld Ed; First Date (with Melba Peachbottom); The Mummy Story (or How I Learned to Love the Dark) and just for this show, Our First Cannon. The Billings Gazette described Behrens’ one-man show this way: “Behrens performs brilliantly, with an amazing range of facial expressions and more limb twisting and odd-posturing humor than you’d ever imagine possible ... The whole thing is kind of like a cross between Bill Cosby and Mark Twain.”

To whet your appetite, here’s an excerpt from The Grasshopper Trap: “I held up the grasshopper trap’s gunny sack, which appeared to have been run over at least twice. ‘I think we may be able to use some of these grasshoppers to go fishing.’ Rancid raised an eyebrow. ‘You mean some of them hoppers ain’t squished?’ ‘Well, no, they’re all squished,’ I said. ‘But we could make little balls of grasshopper paste and put them on our hooks.’” There is only one performance of Scrambled McManus at 7:30pm on Saturday, March 22, and it’s festival seating. Meaning you’d better get your tickets early, or you might end up sitting downwind of Rancid Crabtree. Tickets are $23 in advance; $25 at-the-door with $2 off for Lincoln Theatre members. Purchase at the box office, 712 South First Street in Mount Vernon, call 360-336-8955 or go online at www.app.arts-people.com/index.php?show=41160.
