Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade On March 12, a sea of green will be flowing on Cornwall Avenue with floats, marching bands, bagpipers, bicyclists and the Bellingham community. It’s the seventh annual Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which starts at noon on Saturday, March 12 across the street from Bellingham High School. This year’s parade is shaping up to be the biggest yet. “Every year the parade continues to grow, both in participants and spectators,” says Janet Lightner, Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee Member. “We’re excited to see the community turn out for this year’s parade.” The Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a 501c3 nonprofit, communitywide event honoring local public safety personnel. The parade celebrates and inspires sustainability in the hope of making our city a cleaner, greener, safer place we call home.

“The parade is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community as hundreds of residents and visitors flock to the streets of downtown,” says Lighnter. “It’s so easy to participate. Show up in your best St. Patrick’s Day attire, the greener the better, and be ready to have a blast parading down Cornwall Avenue!” Entry is free and open to all familyfriendly, non-political groups. The parade committee requests floats, cars, and marching bands register at stpatsbham. com. Everyone else may just show up at the staging area (parking lot of Woodsmiths, the Habitat for Humanity Store, Cool Beans Espresso, Mobile Music and Two Thimbles) between 11 and 11:30am. Parade committee members will let participants know where to stand and when to begin parading. Each year, the Bellingham St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee carefully selects a Grand Marshal to lead the parade down the streets of Downtown. The representative chosen exemplifies superior qualities of leadership, a strong dedication to our community and an overall positive attitude. The Grand Marshal leading the 2016 Parade will be Todd Elsworth of Recreation Northwest, joined by his daughter, Violet, as Grand Marshalette!

When asked about his favorite parade memory, Todd reminisced watching the parade with his daughter Violet, “She was standing in the rain in her all green rain suit as we watched the parade roll by with Adam Lent dressed as Fat Bastard! She’s looking forward to this experience as well.” The Grand Marshals will lead the parade south on Cornwall Avenue turning left at Chestnut Street, and right on Railroad Ave. The parade marches past Depot Market Square and turns right at E. Maple Street, ending at the parking lot at the Northeast corner of E. Maple and Cornwall Avenue right by Boundary Bay Brewery. What’s going on after the Parade? There will be free entertainment all day for all ages at Boundary Bay Brewery including live music from noon-4pm, Irish food specials, Irish dancing all day in the bistro & taproom plus more fun in the Beer Garden. 2016 Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival

You will experience birding adventures, nearby and from around the world, at the 2016 Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival, March 11, 12, and 13. Begin your adventure Friday, March 11 with an all-day guided fieldtrip to George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary* in Delta, BC. The number of bird species one can see at this top bird watching site on the Fraser Delta in Canada is

remarkable including up-close encounters with many species such as sand hill cranes. Friday evening, join us for the Wings Over Water Opening and Reception. Enjoy a display of pen and ink wildlife drawings by featured artist Beverly Conner of Dreaming Otter Arts, an entertaining wildlife presentation, silent auction, no-host bar and a variety of hors d’ oeuvres. On Saturday, experience a birding adventure aboard the 50’ Salish Sea* viewing off shore birds and wildlife in the open water between Semiahmoo Spit and Point Roberts. If you ever thought birding is for sissies, you will be on the edge of your seat Saturday at 5pm, hearing the worldwide adventures of this year’s keynote speaker, James Currie, host of Discovery Channel’s Birding Adventures TV viewed on the Discovery Channel. On Sunday, March 13, there will be a full day of activities at Birch Bay beginning with a birding breakfast buffet at the BP Heron Center in Birch Bay State Park, which includes a presentation by Joe Meche from North Cascades Institute. Gala Symphony Concert – The Mount

Baker and Fidalgo Youth Symphonies will collaborate with Squalicum High School Concert Choir at Bellingham’s Mount Baker Theatre and Mount Venron’s McIntyre Hall. Royalty Sings by Iris Likkel A few years ago I was visiting a local senior care facility and heard the strains of gospel music being beautifully sung by a men’s choir. A group of about 30 men were singing for the residents who were thoroughly enjoying it. The Kings Men of Song have been performing for churches, community events, senior living communities and benefit concerts for nearly 34 years. They have traveled to many states to minister and have a heart for the community with an annual benefit concert for the Lighthouse Mission. They also consider prayer for each other and special needs a vital part of their mission. The group was started by Henry Heusinkveld of Lynden, who had a vision of a men’s choir who would sing together as a ministry of inspiration through music. Twenty-one men also shared the vision and joined him. Aaron deBoer, the current president of the group, said there are still two original members singing with them. They meet Wednesdays at the Second Christian Reformed Church at 7:15pm for rehearsals. The conductor is Gerald Rutgers who brings an impressive resume of training and

experience to the Kings Men, and has been with the group since 2014. He is a talented tenor as well, and has appeared as a soloist with the Bellingham Festival of Music Chorus. The only woman in the group is Ruth DeWaard, who is the very talented accompanist who arranges the music. She has been a vital part of the group since 1990, and is spoken of with the highest regard by the members. Her talents are also shared in her church’s music ministry. Upcoming Sunday performance dates are: March 6, 10:30am at Mountainview Christian Reformed Church; March 13, 5:30pm at Sunrise Baptist; and Hope in Christ Church on March 20, 7pm. Dance Gallery Says Goodbye by Susan Witter After 25 years of blending the graceful and the weird across the canvas of human motion, Dance Gallery, Bellingham’s homegrown community modern dance collective, is about to close the curtain. Our last full performances will be April 1, 2, and 3, at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center. Dance is not easy on the body, no matter how attentively one faces the challenges of alignment, turnout, extension, exertion, repetition, extremes, and non-habitual movement. Our numbers are dwindling. At its inception in 1991—the inspiration of co-founders Colleen Curtis, Dan Dalley, and Tina Klix—Dance Gallery was graciously supported by Western Washington University. Nolan Dennett arranged for WWU to rent space to the group for a nominal fee so that Dance Gallery could initiate its first classes and rehearsals. Monica Gutchow would stop by periodically to encourage us. Her subsequent bequest enabled the group to commission several works from noted choreographers. As Dance Gallery gained members and momentum, the group moved to the big-windowed front studio of the Nancy Whyte Ballet School, above what is now Bellingham Bar & Grill. Ever since Alona and Matt Christman and his family opened the community-minded Firehouse Performing Arts Center in 2005, Dance Gallery has enjoyed the center’s inviting space and sprung floor for the company’s classes, rehearsals, and performances.

Highlights of Dance Gallery’s run include close collaborations with wellknown choreographers including Bill Evans, Nancy Cranbourne, Pablo Cornejo, and especially beloved luminary Wade Madsen. We benefited deeply from the years when member–teacher– choreographer Kristin Torok was among us. The guest choreographers, both local and global, who have helped us on our way, are more numerous than there is room here to name, but we are honored to have shared their creative energies. Several have noted our ability to embody a theme or story personally as they saw their ideas and movement styles fleshed out into original dance works. Our own choreographers, notably Dan Dalley, have

for us. Lying on the heated floor of the Firehouse while we stretch confirms for us that we are in the right place, often while rain is beating on the roof. To dance is to be hard on oneself. This can pose many issues as we push our abilities to learn new movement, tweak multiple paths across the floor, convey expression through physicality, and relate to one another. For twenty-five years, the group has managed to surmount such challenges and support each other as we inhabit the stage with nowhere to hide. You have been good to us, Bellingham. Your loving support over the years has helped shape us, has given us purpose. Thank you to our loyal supporters as well as to all of the other creative participants in this art-loving community. We are all of us very lucky. As often happens, goodbye is not really goodbye. Dance Gallery will continue offering classes and will likely develop some dance pieces for the occasional festival or aggregate show like 12 Minutes Max. Dance will find an outlet. Even so, we hope to see you in early April at our finale.

Craig Ferguson’s New Deal Tour turned New Date Tour is Still the Real Deal by Deborah M. Bernard Comedian Craig Ferguson’s show at the Mount Baker Theatre that was previously scheduled for later in March has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 6, 2016. Unavoidable circumstances have again caused Ferguson to reschedule several tour dates in the Northwest, but MBT is pleased to still be able to connect him with fans. The show is at 7:30pm. All previously purchased tickets are valid for the new date. The Mount Baker Theatre box office can help with any necessary returns if contacted by Friday, March 4. Make no mistake, and don’t think of it as “The New Deal/New Date Tour”— Craig has been eager to get here and perform. But his career is launching on so many levels right now that the date change was unavoidable. The Celebrity Name Game, which debuted with Craig as its host in 2014, and has already won a Daytime Emmy, has just been renewed for a third year. Courtney Cox and David Arquette are the executive producers of this show that puts celebrities on the spot as they compete to identify famous names based on improvised clues. Ferguson is perhaps best known as host of CBS’s The Late Late Show from 2005–2014. During his tenure, the show won the 2009 Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. He was labeled a “Late Night Revolutionary” when he played the night show host somewhat as a Theatre of the Absurd. His sidekick was a robot skeleton named Geoff Peterson, a robot with a brain, the antithesis of the usual “Yes Man.” Instead of a live band he had a two-man pantomime horse named Secretariat. He mocked the usual deification of celebrities and even admitted his own faults, and people loved it. “Art is a very grand word, but I like to think that we made something that wasn’t here before,” he said. He sold out his Carnegie Hall appearance in 2010, and his highly praised New York’s Radio City Music Hall performance in 2012. He became an American citizen in 2008, mentioning that this is his home after 13 years and said, “My heart is here.” Soon after, he was invited by President Bush to host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Critics raved over his witty and comical deliverance speech to the 3000 attendees who included political journalists, celebrities, and Washington’s power players. He lent his voice to the animated films How to Train Your Dragon and Brave, and

has written two best-selling books: Between the Bridge and the River, a novel, and American On Purpose, his memoir. Craig Ferguson, Scottish born, got his comedic launch here in the colonies (the United States), on The Drew Carey Show. He played Drew Carey’s boss, Nigel Wick, from 1996-2003. He played the role with an over-the-top posh English accent “to make up for generations of English actors doing crap Scottish accents,” he said. In his comedy special, “A Wee Bit O’ Revolution,” he specifically identified James Dohan’s portrayal of Montgomery Scott—“Scotty”—on Star Trek as the foundation of his “revenge.” Coincidentally, Ryan Stiles, a Canadian/ American comic, creator of Bellingham’s Upfront Theater (improv) also launched his comedy career on The Drew Carey Show, playing Lewis Kiniski from 19952004; at the same time Ferguson played Niles Wick. The Whatcom Council on Aging will be hosting the Antiques and Collectibles Evaluation Show at the Bellingham Senior Activity Center on Saturday, April 9 from 11am to 4pm. Evaluators coming to the event have expertise in all sorts of treasures, including swords, stamps, clocks and time pieces, silver, coins, glassware, dolls, tools, sports memorabilia, books, magazines, comic books, toys, Native art and fine art. There will also be generalist evaluators. At last year’s event, a painting a young couple brought in dazzled the fine art experts. The couple explained they purchased the exquisite landscape art for $20 and were stunned to learn it was valued at over $800. Expert Charles Neeter came across a three-piece silver and ivory creamer set last year. The ivory creamer set was the most rare and valuable thing he had seen in his career. In his expert opinion, the set was priceless. He encouraged the man who brought them in to never sell the set and keep it for his children to enjoy. The cost for each appraisal will be $6. There will be a special category for “general opinion” for the value of a collection with the charge being $15. There will be no cost of admission for anyone who just wishes to view the memorabilia show, but appraisals will require the payment of the appraisal fee. Tickets will be available at the door. Access Bellingham Seeks Local Stories for BTV10 by Joanna Nesbit On a rainy Tuesday evening, a group of local residents gather for a drop-in “production meeting” to work on video production skills. They meet with Eero Johnson, a professional film/video producer and owner of EJ Visuals, and DJ Brown, production assistant with Access Bellingham, the public access segment of the city’s non-commercial TV channel, BTV10. Tonight’s agenda is to learn about green screens and to get help on projects that participants hope to share on Access Bellingham, which airs homemade television programs submitted by city residents. BTV10 is the City of Bellingham’s government, education, and public access television channel, and Access Bellingham is a pilot project offering public access television services. Having begun in 2014, the project has been extended through 2016, and it is seeking locally made videos that reflect the spirit of our community. How spirit is defined is really in the eyes of the creator—as long as it fits within the

program guidelines (no commercial content, lottery schemes, or obscenity). Videos are not juried or edited, so you don’t have to be a film expert to have your video accepted; in fact, the project is aimed at any interested citizen. Programs are aired on BTV10 (Comcast cable channel 10) and live on BTV10’s live stream on Sunday nights from 6pm to midnight. Music is the Inspiration — Bellingham Music Film Festival — Opening April 1 by Marla Bronstein Jessica Miller, Executive Director of Make.Shift, Lindsey Gerhard, Marketing Manager of Pickford Film Center (PFC) and Kacey Morrow, Associate Professor at Western Washington University, are bringing the first Bellingham Music Film Festival (BMFF) to life. Miller told me unequivocally that the BMFF was the brain child of Festival Director Morrow, who teaches in the WWU Department of Design with a focus on motion graphics, digital video, and web and interaction design. She is currently on sabbatical, working on a web documentary, and focusing on the BMFF. Morrow arrived in Bellingham in 2008

Morrow promises that every single entry will be viewed by members of a panel of volunteers from Make.Shift, PFC, FIT and the community at large. Filmmakers will be notified on March 1 if their film has been chosen to be screened during the April weekend. “I have been there.
