Driven by memorable songs and explosive dances, Legally Blonde – The Musical is a joyous journey of self-discovery.
by Osa Hale Month after month, the Mount Baker Theatre brings local and national talent to Bellingham to entertain and inspire audiences. Here’s what they have coming to the main stage in March:
Known for their harmony-laced alt-folk, The Hunts are a band of seven siblings who have been playing music together almost their entire lives.
Monty Python’s Spamalot, is an outrageous musical comedy!
Sunday, March 10: Spamalot For the fans of Monty Python, this musical comedy is sure to be a hit. “Lovingly ripped off” from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the show follows King Arthur and his knights as they adventure through a heavily parodied medieval England. Award-winning musical numbers featuring a cast of hilarious characters and creatures will keep audiences laughing and cheering until the last curtain call. 7pm / Tickets $45.50–$79.50
Saturday, March 16: Ladies of Laughter: Funny & Fabulous Returning for its third year at the Mount Baker Theatre, this comedy act features three of the best female comics on the circuit. This year, Erin Jackson, Patty Rosborough, and Leighann Lord each bring big laughs with their unique styles of stand-up. These hilarious ladies will be joined by the winner of the 2018 Professional Division Championship from New York (who has yet to be announced). 7:30pm / Tickets $20.50–$39.50
Friday, March 22: Don Felder (formerly of the Eagles) Don Felder is the definition of a mega-talent: he propelled the Eagles to classic rock superstardom as their lead guitarist, as well as co-writer on many of their top hits. It’s no wonder why he has been a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for decades. Even after years of touring and playing, Felder remains a legendary performer, with virtuoso-level guitar talent and the energy of a man half his age. 7:30pm / Tickets $27.50–$59.50
Ladies of Laughter: Funny & Fabulous is back by popular demand. This year’s comedians include Patty Rosborough, Erin Jackson, and Leighann Lord.
Sunday, March 24: Legally Blonde – The Musical A Broadway tribute to the novel and film of the same name, Legally Blonde follows modern-day heroine Elle Woods as she overcomes personal and social obstacles to achieve a law degree and self-empowerment. Sweet, silly moments come together between high-energy song and dance numbers to create a effervescent show that will inspire audience members to beat the odds and impress the doubters in their own lives. 3pm / Tickets $45.50–$79.50
Formerly with The Eagles, Don Felder is considered one of rock’s great guitar virtuosos.
Tickets for all events can be purchased online at www.mountbakertheatre.com or at the Mount Baker Theatre box office at 104 N. Commercial St. in downtown Bellingham. Anyone interested in attending four or more shows within a year can save money by purchasing one of the theater’s package deals.
Saturday, March 30: The Hunts The Hunts are an indie-alternative-folk band made up of seven brothers and sisters. Raised in a musical family in Chesapeake, Virginia, the siblings developed a love of coming up with their own tunes. Today the talented group, which ranges in age from 17 to 26 years old, does everything from composing music and writing lyrics, to singing all-original songs, to doing hand percussion, to playing the violin, guitar, viola, piano, banjo, mandolin, drums, accordion, and the ukulele. All that adds up to unique, folksy harmonies that are transcendent and ethereal. 8pm / Tickets $17.50–$39.50

Afternoon Jazz in Sudden Valley Benefits Libraries Closing out the series on November 12 will be Ron Jones’ Jazz Forest. Hollywood film and television composer Ron Jones recently moved from Los Angeles to Stanwood to set up a recording studio. LA-based musicians Pete Christlieb, tenor sax, and Linda Small, trombone, moved to the area with him. Ron recruited more talent from Seattle, and together they form a twelve piece ensemble creating what Ron refers to as “Cinematic Jazz.”
by Courtney Kendall Jazz in its various forms comes to Sudden Valley for the 9th season of the Sudden Valley Jazz series. The series includes two spring and two fall concerts with the proceeds benefiting the South Whatcom Library and Whatcom County Library System. K.C. Sulkin is the mastermind behind the series. He started going to jazz concerts at about eleven years old and jazz has been a large part of his life ever since. K.C. has written about jazz, owned his own jazz club in London, and continues to listen to jazz and go to jazz clubs any chance he gets. After moving to Bellingham, K.C. used his experience to put together the Sudden Valley Jazz series to raise money to build the South Whatcom Library in Sudden Valley. The concerts were so popular, they continued after the library was built. The first concert on March 30 will celebrate Jazz at the Philharmonic. After World War II, jazz impresario Norman Granz gathered jazz musicians to play in a jam session format at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Hall for a reasonable price. The shows were hits, and always featured a leading female jazz vocalist such as Ella Fitzgerald. “I am trying to recreate that here with players from the Pacific Northwest,” says K.C. The Pacific Northwest version of Jazz at the Philharmonic will feature Greta Matassa and Julian MacDonough’s trio with Julian on drums, Tony Foster on piano, and Michael Glynn on bass. Other musicians to be determined will be joining in on the jam session. After this jazzy opening, the series will turn to Brazil’s greatest contribution to jazz: Bossa Nova. April 27 will be dedicated to Bossa Nova Brazil starring Brazilian natives Nilza Nessa and Marco de Carvalho, and backed by Jeff Johnson on bass and Jeff Busch on drums. Marco, a guitarist and vocalist, graduated from the prestigious Music Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro under Juarez Carvalho and Sergio Vale. Marco and Nilza, a vocalist,
recently participated in “Seattle Interprets Jobim 2018,” a salute to the music of composer Carlos Jobim. On October 12 the series will honor what would have been jazz musician Dave Brubeck’s 100th birthday with Brubeck Plays Brubeck—a concert led by Dave’s son Dan Brubeck. Dan will drum with Steve Kaldestad on saxophone, Miles Hill on bass, and Miles Black on piano. Currently, the group plans to recreate Dave’s best-selling album, Time Out. In jazz, however, there is always room for improvisation.

A Musical Reminder of a Dark Time
Sarah Maddox. Photo courtesy Kimberly Sogioka. Photo courtesy of Wade Artist Management. of Uzan International Artists.
by Margaret Bikman Whatcom Chorale presents “Lest We Forget” at 3pm, Sunday, March 17, at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2177 Walnut St. in Bellingham. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 students and seniors, $5 for those 18 and younger, available online through Brown Paper Tickets, and at both Community Food Co-op locations, and both Village Books sites. The centerpiece of the concert is Sarah Mattox’s “Heart Mountain Suite,” based on the journals of Kara Matsushita Kondo, an American Japanese woman born in the Yakima Valley who was incarcerated with her family during World War II at the Heart Mountain War Relocation Center in Wyoming, along with 1,300 other Japanese Americans who lived in the valley. Kondo, who died in 2005, kept a journal during her time living behind barbed wire, and it was her words that inspired Mattox’s opera. The program also features soprano Lindsey Nakatani, a graduate of Squalicum High School and The Juilliard School, in Felix Mendelssohn’s “Hear My Prayer/O For the Wings of a Dove” for soloist and choir, and organist Wade Dingman and Whatcom Chorale in Louis Vierne’s evocative “Solemn Mass.” “Heart Mountain Suite” is a 35-minute choral suite adaptation of Maddox’s full-length chamber opera Heart Mountain. The featured soloist is Metropolitan Opera Guild mezzo-soprano Kimberly Sogioka, whose grandparents, Yoshimaro and Katsuko Sogioka, were also interned at Heart Mountain. Maddox says one of the things that drew her to Kara’s journal so strongly was her ability to write in such an intimate way. “She’s able to take what is truly an overwhelming story of the mass incarceration of 120,000 innocent people, and make it personal and approachable.
Lindsey Nakatani.
She was born and raised in the Yakima Valley, the daughter of immigrants, and eventually returned there to raise her family after the war. But more than that, hers represents the story of a group of people who helped found the Pacific Northwest, who were removed and incarcerated without trial, without recourse, and whose lives were irreparably disrupted for no other reason than they looked like the enemy of the time.” Sogioka says that today, more than ever, we need to remember how easily fear can be used manipulate people and governments to disregard our human rights. “It is shocking how a mass detention of a single ethnic group could be so easily accepted by the American people, and yet we have seen the beginnings of this in our post 9/11 climate,” she says. She adds that while this opera is about the internment camp in Wyoming, Washington state was home to Camp Harmony in Puyallup, where 7,600 people of Japanese descent were sent from Washington and Alaska. “My grandparents were not very talkative about their time in Heart Mountain during my childhood,” she says. “My mom, who is not Japanese, pushed them to talk to us about their detention and tried to keep us tied into our Japanese heritage.” “Singing the role of Kara Kondo has given me a view into the world that they were thrust into. Kara Kondo’s words could very well have been my grandmother’s story.” Concert details: www.whatcomchorale.org. More about Heart Mountain Internment Camp: www.heartmountain.org. “Humor in Music” presented by the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra –
World-renowned British cellist Colin Carr will share the stage with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO) as they present “Humor in Music” at the Mount Baker Theater on Sun., March 3 at 3pm. The music programmed for the afternoon sets an “unexpected” tone by straying from the traditional WSO format, opening with Carr performing Bach’s unaccompanied 3rd Cello Suite. Carr will then be joined by members of the WSO to perform Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C. • As a variation to the Restaurant/At Home Dinner Series offered by WSO, an event is planned for Sat., March 2 at 4pm. Galloway’s Cocktail Bar in Fairhaven will be the location, with attendees enjoying signature drinks and appetizers, and an opportunity to be up close to the performers in an intimate setting. Interfaith Coalition Annual Hope Auction by Marla Bronstein The Interfaith Coalition hosts its annual Hope Auction on March 23 at Four Points by Sheraton. Interfaith Coalition is a community of many faiths working together to eliminate homelessness and poverty in Whatcom County. Founded 37 years ago, this non-profit now has 1400 volunteers working in eight programs that empower local folks to break the cycle of poverty. Interfaith Coalition receives 95% of its funding from the community, and one-third of the organization’s annual budget is raised at this annual event. Doors open at 5:30pm, giving attendees plenty of time to bid on the auction items donated by local businesses, congregations and individuals before a sumptuous dinner will be served. In April 2018, Interfaith launched Family Promise of Whatcom County. This nationally recognized program houses four families at a time in Whatcom County church buildings. Families stay at a day center in north Bellingham from 7am-5pm where they can shower, leave for work or school, and work with a case manager to develop a long-term stability plan. Then in the evening, congregation members provide beds, healthy meals, homework help, and more. The families rotate among congregations, staying a week at each one. Proceeds from the auction will support Family Promise, as well as the other Interfaith programs, which transform the lives of our neighbors in need of a fresh start. As I wrote this article, we were experiencing a winter freeze. I was working in my home office, a cup of coffee in my hand, while outside it was 17°. I was mindful of those less fortunate than myself and grateful for Interfaith Coalition. Tickets to this event usually sell out, so don’t delay. Prices start at $65 for an individual ticket. Contact Interfaith from 9am-5pm weekdays at the office at 910 14th Street, St. James Presbyterian Church, Bellingham. Call with any questions: 360-734-3983. For those who simply can’t make it to the Hope Auction, please consider donating auction items or being an event sponsor.

Another Shading of the American Palette: “From Mexican to Mexican-American” at MoNA by Courtney Kendall
It was the 1970s when Carlos Gil first interviewed members of his family. It wasn’t until his retirement in 2004 that he documented the story they told him in his book We Became Mexican-American: How Our Immigrant Family Survived to Pursue the American Dream. Now, as a Professor Emeritus of the University of Washington where he taught Latin American history for over thirty years, Carlos continues to tell that story in his talk “From Mexican to Mexican-American: A Family Immigration Story.” As a part of Humanities Washington’s speaker series, Carlos will present this free talk at the Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA) in La Connor on Saturday, March 2 from 11am to 12:30pm. Carlos combines both personal and historical perspectives of immigration, as well as the questions of identity and process of assimilation that many immigrants face coming to another country. “Our story is very human,” Carlos explains of his family. “Sad and happy at the same time. It’s the story of America.” This talk moves beyond the politics of immigration, and tells the story of a family’s emigration from Mexico, as well as Carlos’ own experience and that of his siblings born in America. “I’m gently reminding Americans,” says Carlos, “that the process of immigration is A) not easy and B) doesn’t happen overnight.” It took Carlos’ family “four generations to process becoming Americans,” and, in his own words, “leave all that cultural baggage behind.” Join Carlos for an engaging family story of immigration, complexity, and hope grounded in Carlos’ own historical knowledge and background. “We are just another shading of the American palette,” says Carlos. Entrance to MoNA, the current exhibits Spell of the West and Luminaries, and From Mexican to MexicanAmerican: A Family The Gil family. Immigration Story are both free or by donation. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online and find more information at monamuseum.org. Entertainment News Northwest ~ March 2019
