Tartans, Bagpipes, and Camels, Oh My! by Marla Bronstein The Bellingham Scottish Highland Games (Games) are scheduled for the weekend of June 5, 6, and 7. They were first observed at Battersby Field in 1961 in conjunction with the Blossom Time Parade (now the Ski to Sea Parade). The Games quickly filled the space to capacity and moved to Civic Field. Twenty-five years ago, the “Country Fair with Scottish Flair” step-danced to their current home at the nearly 400 acre Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale. A core group of volunteers will spend every day for a week before the event, getting the park set up for the weekend’s activities. Glen Winchester has been working with the Games in one capacity or another since 1999. As the current Director of the Bellingham Highland Games Association, the sponsoring organization, he assures me this family event has something for everyone. The community is invited to gather at 6pm Friday night for the Ceiligh (Kay-lee) featuring the Blessing of the Games. The highlight of this free event is the tapping of the firkin, a special private batch of Boundary Bay’s Highland Reserve Scotch Ale, followed by a talent show and the famous Flaming Saltaire, (the calling of the clans.) To commemorate the 55th year of the Games, Saturday’s opening ceremonies at noon will include all 400+ members of the competing pipe bands. Winchester says when they play “Amazing Grace” in unison, the cottonwood trees will start to shake. This will be followed by a red, white and blue balloon release, and a dove flight. On Sunday, the Simon Fraser Pipe Band will perform in the opening ceremony, in addition to performing an afternoon concert. These world champions are one of only four bands located outside of the United Kingdom that have won a Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championship.
Predators of the Heart will be at the games for the first time this year providing an educational and up close look at nature’s most amazing animals, including reptiles such as snakes and turtles, birds of prey, and large mammals which may include the wolf, cougar and bobcat.
At left: Certain aspects of the highland games are so well known that they have become emblematic of Scotland, such as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the heavy events. While centered on competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, and Scottish athletics, the games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other aspects of Scottish and Gaelic culture. At right: Have you ever dreamed of riding a camel? You will have the opportunity with Camel Safari at the Highland Games. Pictured here is riding camel, Lodi.
One of the most popular events in the Scottish Highland Games is the hammer throw. The thrower spins the ball and cane, chain or wire, in a circular fashion, over his head to gain momentum before the throw. The competition is decided by who can throw the ball the farthest. The men’s hammer weighs 16 pounds and the women’s hammer weighs 8.82 pounds. Drummer & hammer throw photos by Steve Jeffers, courtesy of Bellingham Scottish Highland Games.
Kids’ activities (including the well-loved candy scramble) are scheduled both days after the opening ceremonies. The competitive events happen from 8am till about 5pm and include Scottish Highland Dancers as well as Piping and Drumming. The Heavy Athletics strong man competition, biggest on the west coast, showcases participants throwing monstrous weights and tossing telephone poles Games-goers will also enjoy Scottish Country Dancing and Celtic Music. Performers on the schedule include California’s Wicked Tinkers and local band Maggie’s Fury. There will be food vendors and merchandise for sale, as well as an Ale & Wine Garden. Picnics are always welcomed and encouraged. A surprise awaits first timers and those who missed attending last year’s Games. A return visit from Bellingham’s Camel Safari will bring baby camels. For an additional charge, you can find yourself on the back of a camel. Why Camels? Winchester tells it this way: “When the
email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”
UK had control of North Africa, there was a mounted camel squadron of highlanders. For bagpipers, the most challenging thing to do was to ride the camel while piping. The trick was to match their rhythm with the camel’s strides in order to breathe.” Predators Of The Heart, an animal rescue and preservation facility based on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, will be presenting programs both days. While there is no costuming requirement for attendees, the event does give men of all ages an opportunity to rock their kilts. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Active military, veterans, police and fire fighters get in free. There is no charge for parking. Event organizers want you to know that no pets are allowed inside the park during the Games. For an updated schedule of pipe bands and dancers, check out their website at www.bhga.org.

Sculpture Northwest Gallery Grand Opening by Nancy Canyon Sculpture Northwest’s Grand Opening and Inaugural Exhibition, “Regional Stone, Regional Sculptors,” opens June 5 at 6pm, and shows through August 15, 2015. This world-class exhibition, juried by Northwest Stone Sculptors Association and Sculpture Northwest, will include selected works by emerging as well as established stone carvers, members of NWSSA. The show, featuring a variety of stone (granite to jade) ranging in size from tabletop to massive, is a must-see during Bellingham’s first Friday Downtown Art Walk. The new gallery, Sculpture Northwest (SNW), is the creation of a Bellingham non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sculpture in the northwest. Located next to Whatcom Museum and Syre Education Center on Prospect Street, the indoor sculpture gallery will complement local outdoor sculpture

gardens, providing a regional and international sculpture viewing opportunity for both tourists and locals. In addition, SNW’s board is working in collaboration with regional and international organizations to bring future awe-inspiring sculpture exhibits to Bellingham. The internationally renowned Mexican sculptor Sebastián is a founding member of SNW. His monumental works in steel were featured in the “Sebastián in Bellingham” show of 2010. Sebastián donated three sculptures to Bellingham:
“Red,” “White,” and “Blue,” that can be viewed outside Woods Coffee in Barkley Village. In addition, a remarkable geometrical sculpture is displayed at Big Rock Garden Park. As a SNW founder, Sebastián supports future sculpture projects and the new gallery and may, on occasion, be present for opening events. Founding member Dr. George Drake says: “Sculpture Northwest is a vast project that has been underway for more than twenty years.” He explains, “Our goal is to make the four Northwest Counties of Island, Skagit, San Juan and Whatcom an international tourist draw for viewing outdoor sculpture. Currently, our area claims Western Gallery of Outdoor Sculptures, Big Rock Garden Park, Matske Fine Art and Sculpture Park on Camano Island, Ann Morris’ Sculptor Woods on Lummi Island, and San Juan Islands Sculpture Park.” Along with the project’s founder Dr. Drake, SNW’s board currently consists of twelve individuals, including Marshall Dobry, Architect; Al Zimmerman, Graphic Artist; and Wade Marlow, former owner of the Blue Horse Gallery. Founders— those individuals or corporations donating five thousand or more—will be formally noted beside the internationally famous sculptor, Sebastián, for their generous donations supporting the gallery and future indoor sculpture exhibits. Board members are currently sought as well, especially those proficient in marketing,
international arts awareness, and information systems—a few popular areas of expertise that would be gladly welcomed by the organization. The board is working in collaboration with other sculpture organizations and is currently soliciting work for future exhibits from different nations, including a possible Cuban Sculptors’ show in the fall of 2015. Since there can be difficulties with importing works of art, the board has arranged for trouble-free import/ export in transporting works across borders into the U.S. Now members from organizations, such as The Sculptors’ Society of B.C., can apply to the gallery and deliver pieces to Bellingham without difficulty. For a preview of sculptures equal in esthetic quality to those found anywhere in the world, or to arrange a fair-weather outing to one or all of the Four County Sculpture Exhibits, take an internet tour of local sculpture gardens at these websites: www.sjisculpturepark.com/; www.westerngallery.wwu.edu/sculpture.shtml; www.matzkefineart.com/; www.sculpturewoods.com/; and www.bellingham-subdued-excitement.com/big-rock-garden.html. And, of course, mark your calendar for the Grand Opening of Sculpture Northwest Gallery, 203 Prospect Street, in Bellingham’s Arts District, June 5 at 6pm. Or stop by thereafter—Friday, Saturday or Sunday between 11am and 5:30pm. For more information call 360-734-9757, or visit www.sculpturenorthwest.org.

Dine Out for Maple Alley Inn 2015 by Marla Bronstein On Tuesday, May 12, it will be completely justifiable for you to “Dine Out” for every meal that day, as well as purchase guilt-free lattes and mochas. For the 15th year, restaurants all over Bellingham, and even some out in the county, will donate a percentage of their daily proceeds to Maple Alley Inn, a program of the Opportunity Council. Maple Alley Inn is a community-based program that is open three days a week to provide hot, healthy nutritious meals made with quality, nutritious food in a safe, comfortable setting for people in need. Operating since 1987, Maple Alley Inn has been providing meals to 60-100 guests each day that meals are prepared. Currently, lunches are served Wednesdays and Thursdays out of Faith Lutheran Church and breakfast is served Tuesday mornings at St. Paul’s Episcopal Old Parish Hall. The majority of the food served is donated from places like Food Lifeline, the Bellingham Food Bank, The Emergency Food Assistance Program, Avenue Bread, Haggen, The Community Food Co-op, Joe’s Garden, and Faith Lutheran Community Garden. Anne Paulsen, part-time Maple Alley Inn Coordinator, and Heather Manning, the current AmeriCorps member, work with volunteers who donate an average of 300 hours per month to prepare and serve meals and provide resource information to guests. Matthew Brouwer of the Opportunity Council says that the monies raised during this one-day event amounts to about 1/4 of the annual budget of Maple Alley Inn. To find out which restaurants near you will be participating, check the website: www.oppco.org/maple-alley-inn. Brouwer says you can boost your help when “Dining Out.” If you find empty tables at a participating restaurant, call your friends and neighbors and invite them to join you for a meal. Bellingham TheatreWorks presents World Premiere Musical ‘Marina’ by Osa Hale In beautiful Whatcom County, it is easy to let the days slip by, taking the beauty of the place for granted and enjoying modern life with no thought to the people who came before to build it. But like all cities, Blaine has a deep history that still lingers in old buildings and hums in the railroad. And like all port cities, Blaine’s history can get a little salty. These not-so-golden, Sandy Rood Wolf, local definitely playwright and author olden days of of Marina. the city are the backdrop of the upcoming musical Marina, presented by Bellingham TheatreWorks at the Mount Baker Theatre. Marina centers around the titular character, a grieving woman who makes her living as the owner of the Grubstake Cabaret. Surrounded by rowdy fisherman, intense temperance zealots, enraged union activists, and anti-Asian bigots, Marina strives to survive and perhaps even find love. The whole thing plays out in a bittersweet musical befitting the ups and downs of Blaine, Washington, in 1908. This tale of the Washington coast is a fantastic example of local creativity; written by Semiahmoo playwright Sandy Rood Wolf, accompanied by a live orchestra and music composed by former Bellingham local Justin Melland, the voice

of the performance is as entrenched in this place as the subject matter is. The story is very historically based, taking on issues that were truly at the forefront of everyone’s mind at the time, says Wolf. “Characters are fictitious, but the conflicts in Marina’s world were real. Racial prejudice and anti-immigrant sentiment was rampant,” Wolf explained. She mentioned that prohibition was another major issue of the time, along with gender equality and economic opportunity. “Women fought hard for voting rights. Poor economies worldwide resulted in large numbers of immigrants moving to the Pacific Northwest. Alaska’s gold rush and plentiful supply of salmon figured into life along the coast.” The relatable characters and hot-button issues will resonate with the audience in more ways than one. When she was writing the play, Wolf infused the story with both personal elements and historical facts, trying to bring the past to life. She was particularly inspired by the story of the Star of Bengal, an Alaskan fishing vessel that wrecked near Coronation Island, killing 111 people (mostly Chinese and Japanese cannery workers). “The tragedy of the Star of Bengal got me thinking about how important it is to remember and honor the victims of our local history; the more I researched Blaine in 1908, the more I realized that many of the conflicts of that period are still issues today, and in some refreshing ways, we have made progress as a society,” Wolf said. Marina is appropriately being presented by Bellingham TheatreWorks, with a full orchestra. The show has been a delightful challenge, says producing director Steve Lyons.

“This is the second season of Bellingham TheatreWorks. It is rather ambitious for our little theatre company to tackle the world premier of a full-scale musical with live orchestra at the 1500seat Mount Baker Theatre,” Lyons said. The whole thing has been made possible by the fantastic cast and crew, and Lyons especially pointed out the instrumental role played by director Mark Kuntz. “He has mounted multiple musicals in the Mount Baker Theatre over the years. With a cast of thirty, singing and dancing, full orchestra and a huge set, Mark is the only local director I know of capable of wrangling this squirming, thrashing octopus known as a musical!” This beautiful performance about the seedy underbelly of history and the redemptive power of love will be presented at the Mount Baker Theatre on May 21, 22, and 23, at 8pm. Tickets are available now, and range from $10 to $24. Tickets can be purchased at the Mount Baker Theatre Box Office, 360-734-6080 or online at www.mountbakertheatre.com.

WSO and Seattle Rock Orchestra Present A Beatles Concert The Long and Winding Road of classic Beatles’ musical influence will be celebrated on May 17, 6pm, at Mount Baker Theatre when the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and the Seattle Rock Orchestra will perform together for the first time ever. Iconic songs from The Beatles’ last two studio albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be will be performed with a lush symphonic treatment as both orchestras combine their skills for this once-in-a-lifetime event. How did such a historic collaboration come to be? It’s something like John Lennon and Paul McCartney coming together to write music in Liverpool: a tale of two musicians. Thom Mayes, executive director for the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, personally knows Scott Teske, founder of the Seattle Rock Orchestra. As it turns out, both are bass players with their respective orchestras. “This partnership really appealed to me,” said Mayes. “The Beatles’ music

seems to resonate in our collective consciousness, regardless of the age of the listener. And the Beatles always had a passion for classical music, incorporating it quite often, and quite creatively, in their music.” (Flugelhorns from Magical Mystery Tour come to mind.) Logistics for Mayes’ vision of “iconic pop meets symphonic rock in the form of the Beatles” are complicated: about half the members of each orchestra will combine to make one incredible orchestra. Kim Roy, conductor for the SRO, will conduct. They will Come Together for two fabulous performances: the Bellingham concert, and one in Seattle a week before.
The WSO, resident orchestra of Mount Baker Theatre, is comprised of 80 musicians, including music teachers, active and retired professional musicians, and talented community members. It has attracted national praise from audiences, critics and artists. “I have rarely worked with a community orchestra that played with such enthusiasm and commitment,” said revered pianist Garrick Ohlsson. The Seattle Rock Orchestra, founded by bassist and composer Scott Teske, was born out of his desire to “marry the unabashed performance energy of rock and roll with the broader pallet of musical nuances treasured in classical music,” according to the SRO website. The group is comprised of over 50 musicians, orchestrated to a full symphony, devoted to “orchestral tradition while exploring the rich history of rock and pop music.” The SRO has done tribute concerts to all the greats, including Led Zeppelin, Police, Beck, Queen, Michael Jackson, and Police, among others.
