Skagit Opera presents Hansel and Gretel with International Cast Skagit Opera’s November production of Englebert Humperdink’s beloved opera Hansel and Gretel features an international cast and a set based on paintings especially created for the production by noted Bellingham artist Susan Bennerstrom. Performances are November 6, 8, 13 and 15 at Mount Vernon’s McIntyre Hall. Families are invited to experience the magical world of opera in this children’s version of the Grimm brothers’ classic fairy tale, a beloved work in the operatic repertory. This is the familiar musical retelling of mischievous young siblings, an enchanted forest, a witch with a house made of candy, and the delightful characters that help Hansel and Gretel on their journey home. What started as a chamber opera with a children’s libretto by the composer’s sister became an instant success, influenced by opera’s most famous composer, Richard Wagner, and championed by Richard Strauss, who conducted the premiere in 1893. Combining popular folk-tunes from Humperdinck’s childhood with an endearing and lush romantic score, the opera takes us on a musical journey through a fanciful world in the harrowing fable of Hansel and Gretel. Friday night performances are at 7:30pm and the Sunday matinees begin at 3pm. The opera will be sung in English and has a run time of approximately two and a half hours. A lecture Hansel & Gretel Hut. about the opera begins 45 minutes prior to curtain. Tickets The entire set of Skagit range in price from $25 to $59, with student, military and group Opera’s production of discounts available. The opening-night performance is preceded Englebert Humperdink’s by a gala dinner and auction of Bennerstrom’s Hansel and Gretel Hansel and Gretel is based on paintings, such paintings. Ten Years of the BAAY Way by Marla Bronstein RULES • Be Kind; • Do Your Best; • Raise Your Hand If You Wish to Speak; and • Be Safe. David Post, Founder and Artistic Director of BAAY (Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth) believes kids are capable of doing anything. “We give them a place where creativity is nourished; it grows and becomes the baseline for having a good moral compass.” David admits that sounds kind of “pie in the sky,” but utilizing this formula with a lot of one-on-one coaching, praising kids publicly, and coaching them privately, has worked. David knows the time of adolescence can be challenging. The message and school culture that David imparts to all of his students is to come into class ready to learn and treat each other with love and kindness. He teaches theater skills, etiquette, correct singing, dance, and basic acting with a high standard for conduct. If someone is new or is being unkind, manipulative, or getting into gossip, staff works with the student to solve the issue. Hailing from Wisconsin, David Post was educated in California, and ended up in Bellingham less than 20 years ago, leaving shortly thereafter for a job in Ukiah, CA. In 2005, David was surprised to discover

his old home of Bellingham supported five dance companies, a youth jazz band, and two youth symphonies, but had no active youth choir and no active youthbased theatre programs. With energy and enthusiasm, he returned to Bellingham to create BAAY. He took out an ad in the local ValPak to start a Bellingham children’s choir. Eight kids participated in that first choir, using Garden Street Methodist Church as their rehearsal space. In the past ten years, hundreds of youth aged 5-18 have worked under David’s careful direction. Memorable shows include Annie, Charlie Brown, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, some of which he has done more than once, sometimes at the same time with different aged casts. David still manages multiple choirs, and last year took a group to perform at Carnegie Hall. The BAAY choirs will be

fall show, the school version of Les Mis. Check the Facebook page and BAAY website for performance dates. Tuition for all of the BAAY programs is very reasonable. No one is turned away for lack of ability to pay. As a 501(c)3, BAAY relies heavily on donations from

performing with the Whatcom Symphony at their holiday concert for the second year in a row. He has been renting rehearsal, school and performance space on State Street since 2007, and has done “tons” of tenant improvements that include lighting, and seating for 130. BAAY’s Preschool is available for children aged 2-5, while BAAY choirs and plays are designed for students aged 5–18. The EduArts program is available in ten elementary and middle, public and private schools, for after-school enrichment art, dance, theatre, basketball, and choir. David has a stellar crew, which includes Steve Barnes as musical director; Dana Crediford, the Costume Shop Manager; and Lisa Markowitz, who handles choreography and movement. community members to survive. If people are interested in volunteering, they must pass a background check. Contact David directly at david@baay.org or you can reach Damian Cade at officemanager@ baay.org. David has told the board that this is his last year with BAAY. He jokingly calls it his GAAP year. Ian Bevins will take over as Artistic Director, and with Steve, Dana and Lisa, David feels comfortable that BAAY will survive for years to come. David has left before. And he came back. We’ll see how long he can stay away this time.

Jingle Bell Run/Walk Brings Holiday Cheer! by Deborah Bernard Arthritis is the number one cause of disability in America, affecting more than 50 million people of all ages—roughly one in five adults. When a disease steals the joy out of the lives of people you love, you wish there was something you could do to fight back. People in Whatcom and Skagit Counties, in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation, have been fighting back, valiantly and festively, for decades. They don their Christmas apparel, maybe put on an ugly Christmas sweater, tie jingle bells on their shoe laces, festoon their dogs with jingle bells and reindeer horns, and turn out to defeat the crippling disease. They walk, or run, the 5K (3.12 mile) Bellingham Jingle Bell route, “a festive Run/Walk. race that helps arthritis research and brings people and dogs from all walks of life together,” according to the Arthritis Foundation’s website. Costumes are optional. More than 4,000 people are expected to bring the holiday spirit to Bellingham Saturday, December 12 when they “jingle all the way” from Bellingham High School for the Arthritis Foundation’s 28th Annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk event. The annual holiday-themed event will start with a Kids Fun Run with the Elves at 8:30am and follow with a 5K Run/Walk and Dog Trot at 9am. Bellingham will also have a one-mile Arthritis Friendly Route. The people from the City of Subdued Excitement have raised an impressive amount of funds, according to Lori McKnight, Development Manager of the Bellingham Arthritis Foundation. “There are over 100 Jingle Bell events nationwide, and last year, Bellingham was number four in the nation for fundraising,” she said. In 2014, 3,703 participated and raised $194,000. “This year, our goal is 4,000 people, and our financial goal is $201,000 for Bellingham,” she said. Contrary to popular belief, arthritis is not an “old person’s” disease, according to Lori McKnight. “It hits people from age 2 on up, and can attack the eyes, the internal organs, and cause heart trouble.” The Skagit Jingle Bell Run/ Walk will happen Saturday, December 5, at Above: One of the teams from the Skagit Jingle the Burlington Bell Run/Walk. At right: A young walker. Visitor Center. Last year, 417 participated and raised $29,000. “This year, the goal is 500 people and $31,000 in funds raised for research,” Lori said. For the Whatcom County Run/Walk, the Presenting Sponsor is Wilson Motors and the Platinum Sponsor is Lummi Nation. Blade Chevrolet is the Presenting Sponsor for the Skagit County event. National Sponsors are AbbVie, Massage Envy, and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. To learn more and to register for the Bellingham event, visit www.BellinghamJingleBellRun.org or call 360-733-2866. For more information about the Skagit event, go to www.SkagitJingleBellRun.org. Visit www.arthritis.org/JBR to learn more about the fight to conquer arthritis.

This month, the quirky gem of a museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary of opening doors on November 17, 1995 on Grand Ave, where it resided until it moved to its larger location at 210 West Holly St. several years later. To mark the occasion, Mindport Exhibits is kicking off its 20th year with a celebration on Sunday, November 15 during its regular hours of noon-4pm. Please come join in the festivities for the $2 admission fee. Besides the regular interactive exhibits, and the adjacent art gallery with rotating shows of artwork and photography, you will find a display corner of historic memorabilia of “Mindport on Grand Ave,” featuring retired exhibits, artifacts, and exhibit prototypes from the early days of the museum. You will also have a chance to meet some of the exhibit creators and take workshop tours. Mindport’s Correspondence Club’s Mail Art station will be set up all day so visitors can make their own cards and envelopes to send to friends near and far. This monthly club is usually held in the mezzanine classroom, where all are invited to use the collection of typewriters, paper scraps, envelope templates, and odds and ends to create snail mail. (Watch the museum’s Facebook page for monthly announcements.)

Also, the museum is soliciting alumni memories of the museum to post on its Facebook page during November. Email publicity@mindport.org with your memory. Who are alumni? A lot of people! Those who have worked at Mindport, exhibited artworks in the gallery, visited the museum as children and are now bringing their own children, brought their children and are now bringing grandchildren, or have returned with school or camp groups for many years. Also, keep an ongoing eye open on the front window display for Art Director Anmorgan Curry’s rotating visual commentary. Each year, Mindport has thousands of visitors from around the US (46 states to date), as well as international visitors from Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Africa, who appreciate the museum’s commitment to hand-made exhibits in a reflective, peaceful setting. Stepping in to the museum is a calming experience, a degree removed from the work-a-day world of commerce and hustle. That’s just what director and founder Kevin Jones was striving for, and his visitors say he delivers. “It’s highly gratifying that such a large proportion of our visitors express such appreciation for those aspects of our projected ‘character’ that we’ve purposefully cultivated,” says Jones. “We’ve always liked the idea of being viewed as a kind of sanctuary, a place where people can escape from the jangling world of commerce.” He also appreciates that visitors respond so enthusiastically to the

idiosyncratic exhibits. “In a world where everything is increasingly uniform and standardized, it’s reassuring to know that so many people appreciate some of the personal and oddball things we have to offer,” Jones says. Mindport is also announcing the use of the museum as an after-hours rental venue for adult receptions, celebrations, or events. Inquire about rates or details by emailing publicity@mindport.org.
