The Gift That Keeps On Giving — Climate Deniers Think Magically by Christopher Key With an overwhelming, and everincreasing, amount of evidence documenting anthropogenic climate change, why does a substantial portion of the population remain in denial? Dr. Bruce M. Hood is an experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol specializing in the cognitive processes behind adult magical thinking. He will be speaking in Bellingham on October 29 as part of the “Afraid of the Dark” Lecture Series. “Magical thinking refers to those beliefs and practices that are based on supernatural assumptions about the world – supernatural in that they go beyond natural explanations,” Hood said. “Typically, they appeal to the presence of forces, energies and entities that have not been reliably verified scientifically, that is by objective reliable evidence that can be verified independently.” Are Americans more susceptible to magical thinking than other “First World” nations? “It is not clear that people in the U.S. are more magical in their thinking in comparison to other ‘First World’ nations,” Hood said. “They are more religious, but if one considers secular supernatural thinking, then in fact there is plenty of evidence to indicate that levels are equivalent. For example, the UK is more secular than the U.S., but Gallup polls reveal almost equivalent levels (75 percent) have at least one magical belief. Some magical beliefs are so common that they are not even recognized as such. For example, 90 percent believe that they can detect when they are being watched from behind even though there is no evidence for this ability.” How does this affect the debate over climate change? “It could be argued that individuals who deny evidence on issues such as climate change are relying on their gut intuitions that are emotive rather than basing their decisions on statistical evidence,” Hood said. “The problem with statistical evidence is that the human brain is really not that good at evaluating statistical probabilities which is why people tend to focus on the single auspicious event rather than consider the long term picture or the full story. For example, people believe that they may have powers of foresight when they think of an event that comes true, when in fact they fail to recognize all the predictions that have not. Coincidences are not the exception, but happen all the time, and yet people still infer supernatural intervention. For climate change deniers,

Dr. Bruce M. Hood

one swallow does make a summer, as it were.” Magical thinking has been applied to far more than climate change. “Another good example is the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) scandal,” Hood said. “People were convinced by a rogue report linking the triple vaccine to autism. They had no good evidence other than the reports of positive association, which figured much higher in their mind because they could identify with the victims. There was no emotional connection with the majority who did not develop autism, and so they made the link that the vaccine was dangerous.” Is the human brain’s ability to hold contradictory beliefs a survival trait? “Beliefs are incredibly powerful and difficult to eradicate, indicating they have some privileged position in the stories our brains construct about the world,” Hood said. “I happen to believe that they primarily serve a social function that operates to bind individuals in a group around concepts of the world that cannot necessarily be verified. As to holding contradictory beliefs, I think it is more to do with the division between rapid intuitive thinking (which emerges spontaneously in children) and the slow methodological scientific reasoning that we acquire later in life. They operate at different times and different rates. When you are at 30,000 feet, you can reason the hell out of turbulence and the design of the wing, but even the atheist may find himself praying for a safe landing!” Dr. Hood’s lecture is open to the public and will be taking place at 5:30pm on October 29 at the new Pickford Film Center, 1318 Bay Street in Bellingham. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for students, available at the door or at www.pickfordfilmcenter.org.

DRACULA TIMES TWO by Osa Hale As the nights get colder and longer and fall turns toward winter, we begin telling ghost stories. It all culminates on Halloween, when costumes transform us into a variety of ghoulish creatures (and some silly ones), but all of October is a good time to delight in that which is spooky. With that in mind, both Northwest Ballet Theater and Free Key Productions will be telling the story of the most famous blood-sucking creature of the night: Dracula. Each production will bring the old story to life in a distinct fashion. John Bishop, artistic director for the Northwest Ballet Theater, promises a dramatic and surprising performance. “My hope is that it will be a production that will reach a wide audience that includes a generation of young people who are have been captivated over the past few years with movie and television interpretations about Dracula, werewolves and zombies,” Bishop says. Christopher Key, artistic director for Free Key Productions, is also appealing to widespread fascination with vampires, although he calls upon older tropes in his play. “I have loved the vampire legends since I was a kid, and Bela Lugosi scared the

snot out of me,” Key says. “I hope this show will remind people that vampires are not all hard-bodied young hotties running around in the woods out near Forks. The original is still the baddest.”

The leading ladies are only matched by the masterful performances of the deliciously villainous Dracula, his henchman Renfield, and the Countess Bathory.

NBT Dracula cast members: Natasha Keeley, Jonica Coweleers, Mija Bishop, Josh Deininger, Philip Borunda, Angus McLane, Miye Bishop, Julian Young.

The ballet will be full of dramatic and talented performances, Bishop promises. Act I will be played out through the eyes of Lucy Westenra, danced by Miye Bishop, who falls prey to Dracula. Act II is seen through the eyes of Mina Harker, danced by Mija Bishop, who helps to vanquish the vampire. This follows the novel by Bram Stoker, but there will be plot twists.

“Dracula, danced by Joshua Deininger, portrays a powerful, yet vulnerable villain, needing others to protect him or serve his life-sustaining needs,” Bishop says. “Alona Christman, a principal dancer for Bellingham Repertory Dance Company, takes on the challenging role of Dracula’s lunatic henchman Renfield — traditionally played by a man, but not in this production. Countess Bathory is danced by the seductively sinister Natasha Keeley from Ballet Bellevue.” Finally, well-known Bellingham actor Angus McLane, known for his talents showcased through the Bellingham Theatre Guild and the Shakespeare Festival, plays Count Dracula’s nemesis, Professor Abraham Van Helsing. The Dracula production will be a darkly delightful, family-friendly show as the Northwest Ballet Theater celebrates its 15th season. Performances include an evening show and a matinee at the Mount Baker Theatre – Oct. 12 at 7:30pm and Oct. 13 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased by calling 360-734-6080, or visiting www.mountbakertheatre.com. There will also be a 7:30pm performance at McIntyre Hall on Oct. 25 (call 360416-7727 for tickets), and another at the same time at Orcas Center on Nov. 1 (call 360-376-2281 for tickets). Tickets range from $18 to $35. As if a ballet based on Dracula wasn’t thrilling enough, the spooky old tale will also be played out on stage at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center in Fairhaven. Key takes great pride in the performers who will be putting on the show.

“It’s high Victorian melodrama, meaning the actors really get to strut their stuff,” Key says. “I am fortunate, in that I have a group of immensely talented actors who love working with me as much as I love working with them.” The play, an adaptation of Stoker’s Dracula written by award-winning playwrights Jane Thornton and John Godber, will be spooky, dramatic, and erotic, Key says. This will be accomplished through minimalist staging, expert lighting, and intense performances, which are bound to be as entertaining as they are unique. Key, who says he likes to cast against type, has cast short, blonde, and bearded TJ Anderson in the titular, vampiric role. Continuing his pattern of originality, the artistic director has cast Sonia Alexis as the traditionally male Van Helsing. Like the Northwest Ballet Theater, Free Key Productions’ Dracula will star a lady in the

Marla 1, Norman 0 — A Whole New Normal by Christopher Key When Marla Bronstein was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma in 2009, she named the tumor Norman. Norman had no idea whom he was dealing with. Now that Norman’s butt has been thoroughly kicked, Bronstein has written a book about her experience, called A Whole New Normal: an acoustic neuroma journey. An acoustic neuroma is a tumor on an auditory nerve in the brain that can cause loss of hearing, tinnitus, pain and even death. By naming her tumor, Bronstein helped herself focus on the long battle ahead. This is a beautifully written memoir, full of joy, pathos, wit, and it reads just like Bronstein sounds: brash, straightforward and in-your-face. She has a flair for understatement, as evidenced by her nicknames for physicians: Dr. Death, Dr. Superman, and Dr. Wonderful. But A Whole New Normal is far more than a memoir. It is also a love story between a strong, but often frightened woman, and a community of fervent supporters who helped Bronstein give Norman the heave-ho. There is plenty of medical detail about her condition, but it’s never dull. Bronstein enlivens her narrative by including responses to her patient blog from her friends. Throughout the book are delicious tidbits of Bronstein’s famous wit, sometimes savage, sometimes gentle. While she takes Norman quite seriously, Bronstein rarely takes herself seriously and that helps keep the reader entertained. This is a can’t-put-it-down tale of one person’s astounding journey through a fairly rare, but debilitating disease. It is also an immensely touching tale about how a community comes together to help one of its most beloved members. It may take a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to heal. Marla Bronstein will be reading excerpts from A Whole New Normal at Village Books, on Wednesday, October 9 at 7pm. It is available for $14.95.

Entertainment News Northwest ~ October 2013

Messenger, 36 x 48 inch oil painting by Trish Harding.

Exhibit Connects to Lightcatcher’s “Vanishing Ice” by Stephanie Dethlefs Adding to the growing voices concerned with global climate change, local artist and owner of Studio UFO in Bellingham, Trish Harding presents “Hot Water: The Tipping Point” in November. This one-woman show will be her first in a couple of years, and connects thematically with the Vanishing Ice exhibit at the Lightcatcher Museum in Bellingham. The Vanishing Ice exhibit, on display from November to March, emphasizes the global effects of climate change, specifically with regards to the polar and alpine regions. “Hot Water: The Tipping Point” will include all new oil paintings which address this same issue but with the inclusion of local iconic imagery to emphasize her concerns. “My message is that climate change is real, that there is a way to reverse it, and that it will take every one of us to make the change necessary to save the health of planet earth,” Harding explains. She wants her paintings to “require the viewer to think, interact, and begin a dialogue on the subject. Hopefully [visitors] will be troubled, enlightened, inspired and involved.” Harding, who has been painting for over 40 years, is not new to tackling political issues in her work. “As my painting has matured, the subject and the statement has merged with my political views, often local issues that have a global significance,” she says. With this show, the message was more important than sales. “I believe that keeping sales or money out of the equation from the very conception frees me up to paint work that is truthful, authentic, and on target. Sales motivation would not allow me to paint what is necessary for this type of a show.” The show opens Friday, November 1, from 6-9pm at Studio UFO. For more information about Studio UFO and the exhibit, visit www.studioufo.net or call 360-319-6115.

Doctober—A Month of Many Docs by Joanna Nesbit October brings fall colors, apple cider, pumpkin patches, and Halloween. It also brings Doctober, Bellingham’s documentary film festival now in its sixth year. For the entire month, the Pickford Film Center will host this popular festival packed with documentary films, Q&A panels, discussions, and exhibits. Bellingham audiences love documentaries – they’re often the Pickford’s biggest hits – and this year’s Doctober promises one of the strongest film line-ups so far. Topics range from human and environmental rights issues to fly fishing, the fine wine market, high-altitude climbing, music, dairy farms, and more. The festival features films that either have not been distributed to theaters or are in distribution for niche audiences, so Doctober is a great opportunity to attend films you wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to see. The festival also hosts pre- and post-film guided discussions and guest speakers so audiences can explore top issues as a community. “We’ve learned the best way to engage patrons is to partner with local organizations who see value in presenting panels or guests to localize some of the bigger issues,” says Pickford Program Director Michael Falter. And if you’re in the mood for lighter subjects, Doctober has those too. Here’s a peek at some of the films and events: Doctober’s Opening Night features Kiss the Water, a film tribute to legend Megan

Boyd, a self-taught Scottish fishing fly-maker hailed as one of the finest fly-tiers in the world. Film director Eric Steel will attend the event, which includes a pre-show reception with a Fly Fishing Exhibit by WWU Libraries and the Confluence Fly Shop, a new fly-fishing shop in town. Prefer wine to fly-fishing? Don’t miss Red Obsession, a film that explores issues of power, wealth, and influence in the fine wine world, with a look at China, the latest player in a market dominated for centuries by Bordeaux. Music lovers will find a number of films for their taste. Feature-length Big Star:

Nothing Can Hurt Me tells the story of the 70s-era Memphis “powerpop” band Big Star and why they never hit mainstream success – but nevertheless are considered a key influence in the rock music canon. A.KA. Doc Pomus profiles Jerome Felder, a legendary songwriter whose name few people know, but whose songs everyone recognizes. Good Ol’ Freda weaves original Beatles’ music into its tale of Freda Kelly, the Beatles’ devoted secretary who worked for the band for 11 years and offers an insider perspective.

Betting the Farm highlights the plight of several small dairy farmers in Maine. Prior to the film, representatives from four local dairy farms will give out dairy samples. Afterwards, audiences can stick around for a Q&A panel and discussion. The Community Food Co-op, in conjunction with other organizations, presents GMO OMG, a film exploring the systematic corporate takeover and potential loss of seeds. A panel discussion follows this film as well. For outdoor enthusiasts, there’s The Summit, a gripping tale of the deadliest K2 climbing disaster in history. Adventures NW presents Antarctica, a Year on Ice as a prelude to the Whatcom Museum’s Vanishing Ice exhibit coming in November. Director Anthony Powell will be on hand for a pre-show reception. A feature film, Closure, which ran during summer to sold-out audiences, is back for an encore. The film’s subject, Angela, was raised in Bellingham and is a trans-racial adoptee who set out to find her birth mother and family. Director Bryan Tucker, Angela’s husband, and Angela herself will attend the screening. Note that some of the Doctober films screen for one night only, while a few will be in town for a week. For one-night only films, purchasing tickets in advance is recommended. For a complete schedule and tickets, visit www.pickfordfilmcenter.org. Pickford Film Center Announces Resignation of Executive Director The Pickford Film Center has announced that Executive Director Alice Clark will be stepping down from the position she’s held since 2001, effective December 31. Pickford Film Center has become one of Bellingham’s most respected cultural institutions thanks to the tireless work of Clark at the helm of the dedicated staff, volunteers and community supporters. “We are grateful to Alice for making the Pickford what it is today,” said Mary Doherty, president of the Pickford’s Board of Directors. “She’s brought this organization from a small grassroots group looking to share independent film to a community space that provides so much more than great film. She rallied to make each of the film centers a space for artists, activists, families, students of all ages, educators and local businesses to share and enjoy together.” Clark has been intimately involved with the nonprofit organization’s evolution – from opening the original Pickford Cinema (now the Limelight Cinema) on Cornwall Avenue in 1998 to raising the funds required to purchase new digital projection equipment for both the Limelight and Pickford Film Center on Bay Street in 2012. Since Clark began her tenure as Executive Director in 2001, the organization has experienced tremendous growth, including: • Revenue has increased from $230,000 to $1 million; • Membership has grown from 1,000 to 3,500; • Attendance has grown from 14,340 to 85,380 tickets sold annually; and • Expanded from one 80 seat venue to two venues with a total of 277 seats. In addition, during Clark’s tenure, the PFC garnered two Bellingham Mayor’s Arts Awards recognizing the organization’s impact as a cultural institution. A longtime Bellingham resident, Clark earned her bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from Western Washington University. She said after some world travel, she plans to stay in Bellingham and remain an ardent supporter of the Pickford. She will continue organizing various community activities including the Sunnyland Stomp, and recently started selling her homemade Alice’s Pies at the Bellingham Farmers Market. The Pickford’s Board of Directors has formed a hiring committee to guide the search for a new executive director. email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”

Bellingham concertgoers are in for an exceptional treat at the second concert of the season which features internationally acclaimed virtuoso violinist Gil Shaham (pictured), presenting a fresh interpretation of the perennial favorite Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D. Known for his innate musicality and expressive tone, Shaham began his solo career at age 10 when he debuted with the Jerusalem Symphony. At age 18, he stepped in for the ailing Itzhak Perlman playing the Sibelius and Bruch violin concertos with the London Symphony, catapulting him into stardom. He is a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Grammy Award for best Chamber Music Performance. Shaham, who plays a Stradivarius, is in high demand by the world’s leading orchestras. Experience the magic of the violinist praised by Strings magazine for his “effortless technique” and “infectious enjoyment of the music.” Featuring all German Romance era composers, the program also includes Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, inspired by the Hebrides archipelago off the west

coast of Scotland. Inclusion of this powerful work was inspired by the Whatcom Museum’s upcoming exhibit entitled Vanishing Ice, which seeks to introduce the artistic legacy of alpine and polar landscapes now threatened by climate change. The piece evokes images of the spectacular beauty of these islands and surrounding sea now endangered by rising sea levels. The concluding piece on the program is Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4. An evocative tone painting, which Schumann composed later in his life, the piece reflects the turmoil of his struggles with mental illness. Dr. Ed Rutschman presents a pre-concert lecture in the MBT Encore Room, one hour prior to the concert. Admission is free, but seating is limited. The concert will take place on Sunday, November 3 at 3pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. Tickets prices start at $12.
