Mount Baker Theatre Expands Rep Series by Angela Marino & Katharine Conrad Following in the footsteps of Mount Baker Theatre’s successful Summer Rep and Winter Rep Series, MBT Autumn Rep makes its debut with the delightful musical Forever Plaid. One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously fun revue is chock-full of 1950s guy group harmonies and pitchperfect melodies. The inspiring story follows a young male quartet with dreams of recording an album and hitting it big. When those dreams are cut short on the way to their first major gig, the pals return from the afterlife to give one last try at becoming a pop sensation. Director Annie Lareau describes Forever Plaid as a “musical encompass[ing] the The Plaids: Dustyn Moir (Jinx), Casey Raiha (Francis), Sage Hoag (Smudge), TJ Anderson (Sparky). friendship and dreams of these four Photo by Damian Vines, young men, and perhaps a reminder www.damianvinesphotography.com. that we should live life to the fullest while given the opportunity.” She particularly enjoys seeing the growth of the show’s lovable characters, each of whom are dedicated to fulfilling the group’s big dream. “They have taken care of each other,” says Lareau. The brotherly love comes with loads of laughs and slick dance moves, making Plaid a fun experience for the whole family. The satirical gem is full of delightfully over-the-top choreography and sentimental pop songs, including masterfully executed hits like “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” “Crazy ‘Bout You Baby,” and “Rags to Riches.” The talented cast keeps the audience on their toes with a host of upbeat harmonies. Lareau hopes “that the audiences leave tapping their feet, singing the tunes, and having had a lovely, enjoyable evening full of laughter, tears, and a little bit of nostalgia for a time gone by.” MBT Autumn Rep’s thoroughly enjoyable Forever Plaid runs October 2-18. It’s Rocket Science To Me by Marla Bronstein Unless you frequent off-thebeaten-track theater experiences, it is unlikely you will come across a play like QED in Whatcom County. Scripted by Peter Parnell and set in 1986, the story, told in 45 pages and representing 90 minutes of dialogue, is mostly spoken by one actor who holds forth with captivating wit and wisdom. QED is about Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, the man who developed Photos courtesy of Christopher Key the atomic bomb and quantum electrodynamics. Feynman was one of life’s great eccentrics. John Evans French will direct Christopher Key (above left) as Feynman and Western sophomore Savanna Balfour (above) as Miriam Field, a graduate student. Key has been preparing for this performance, “a role of a lifetime,” by working to change his appearance, attempting to lose 25 lbs. through diet, exercise, and working with a personal trainer, to attain Feynman’s cancer-ridden physicality. Key identifies with Feynman, not only as a brainiac, but also because of their mutual love for playing the bongos, frequenting topless bars, chasing women, being anti-authoritarian, and relishing bit parts in theatricals. (I assumed the part about topless bars.) Because the subject of physics and science is so prevalent in the text, Key believes QED will appeal to students and others interested in quantum physics and sciences. According to Alan Alda who originated the stage role, “The second act is about the personal life of everybody in the audience, not just Feynman’s life alone. It’s also theirs.” Key says that anybody facing the end of life, at any point, will find it interesting to see how a total rationalist approaches death. Free Key Productions presents QED in the Harold and Irene Walton space at the Mount Baker Theatre. Show times are 7:30pm, Friday, November 6; 2pm and 7:30pm, Saturday, November 7; and 2pm, Sunday, November 8. Contact Mount Baker Theatre for tickets at 360-734-6080 or www.mountbakertheatre.com.

Lynden Music Festival Returns for 7th Season by Marla Bronstein Terhi Miikki-Broersma moved from Kotka, Finland, to Lynden in 2004. Her husband, Doug Broersma, who directs the Mt. Baker Toppers, introduced her to local legend Claire vg Thomas. Claire was a retired professional musician who loved all kinds of music, and had worked with famous composers and musicians in New York. A friendship was formed. Claire’s passing in October of 2007 left a huge hole in the hearts and arts community of Lynden. Terhi wanted to honor Claire’s memory, and believed that Lynden was ripe for creating its own community music festival, incorporating different genres, and including educational opportunities. Terhi had experience producing such a festival in Finland, and was confident Lynden’s varied gathering places would be perfect locations to house and sustain such a festival. In the fall of 2008, Terhi produced the first “Claire de Lune” concert series, dedicated to Claire vg Thomas. The concert series has continued every year since then, known now as the Lynden Music Festival, and will celebrate its 7th season October 14-18, 2015. In My Life – A Musical Tribute to the Beatles Returns to Bellingham by Marla Bronstein In My Life – A Musical Tribute to the Beatles will return to the Mount Baker Theatre on Friday, October 23 at 7:30pm. In My Life is the award-winning musical biography of the Beatles, told through the eyes of manager Brian Epstein, and featuring the live music of the renowned tribute band Abbey Road. In 2007, producer Andy Nagle saw a Southern California Beatles tribute band perform at a fundraiser to benefit a local 130-seat community theatre. He was stunned by their spot-on performance, and thought about weaving the Beatles’ story into the music, highlighting well-known, historical facts. Andy grew up listening to the Beatles and considers himself to have been an average fan. He and his writing partner researched Nate Bott (“John”), Chris Paul Overall (“Paul”), everything they could to put together the Axel Clarke (“Ringo”) and Jesse Wilder best version of the facts that could be (“George”). Photos by Michelle Fairless. determined, using close Beatles’ sources and incorporating some poetic license. Theaters around the country heard about the successful show, and they have been touring since 2008. The members of the current touring company are Southern California-based, and range in age from 20s to 30s. They are admittedly Beatles fanatics, who love performing in front of large crowds, recreating Beatles music note for note. College volunteers who started touring with the show now travel with the show for a living. A string quartet from Bellingham High School (pictured at right) was chosen to perform five songs with the cast. The group is led by teacher and conductor Nick Stroebel. Andy assures audiences that the show is more than a tribute concert; it is a musical retelling of the story with a live band. There will be something for any true Beatles historian, as well as casual Beatles fans. Tickets are $25-$65 and may be purchased at www.MountBakerTheatre.com , in person Bellingham High School String Quartet: at the theatre box office, or by calling 360Madeline Smith, Chloe Johnston, Sophia 734-6080. Young Love Meets High Society at A Swell Party with Cole Porter Well, did you evah? What a swell party this is! A rollicking new musical written by Scott Henderson, Martin Bray and Larry Rosen opens in October, celebrating America’s iconic songwriter, Cole Porter. And the roller-coaster of romance at a New York penthouse party. A Swell Party with Cole Porter, debuts on Thursday, October 8, and can be seen again on Saturday, October 24, 7:30pm at The Firehouse PAC, and again on Saturday, November 21, 7:30pm, at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden. Local favorites Martha Benedict, Martin Bray, Ben Buchanan, Sherrie Kahn, and Megann Schmidt perform more than 30 of Cole Porter’s timeless songs. It is 1947, and society hostess, Elsa Maxwell, is throwing a grand party for Cole Porter. In a surprise reunion, two young caterers, Harry and Fern, rekindle the spark of romance. But Fern has another party game on her mind: Find a rich man to marry. She doesn’t know Harry has some secrets of his own. Through the rich catalog of Porter’s wry, romantic, and downright hysterical songs, Harry and Fern discover love can overcome even the most opulent of temptations. The songs, written between 1927 and 1956, include favorites like You’re the Top, You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To, Friendship, Let’s Do It, Let’s Misbehave, Be A Clown, Anything Goes, My Heart Belongs to Daddy, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, I Get a Kick Out of You, Night and Day, Begin the Beguine, Just One of Those Things, and many more rarer finds.

“Porter himself is never on stage, but his presence is evident through the other characters,” said Scott Henderson, co-writer and musical director. “Every famous name we drop in this play, and we drop a lot of them, from Igor Stravinsky to Edith Piaf, came right from the pages of Cole Porter’s biography. He knew everyone in artistic circles, and when he wrote songs, he wrote very personally for his friends to perform and enjoy.”

Kevin Woods: New Professor of Jazz at WWU by Deborah M. Bernard Kevin Woods, trumpeter, educator, and composer/arranger, was just named the first full-time WWU Professor of Jazz in five years. Woods received his BA in Music from WWU and his MM in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado. He loves the musical culture of Bellingham. “I’m looking forward to joining a team of talented and inspiring faculty and working with the students of WWU,” he said. There is an awakening in Bellingham, a rebirth of the celebration of jazz. Just ask Lloyd Peterson, the founder of the Mount Baker Rhythm and Blues Festival, which just celebrated its 20th year. He’ll tell you: “It hasn’t been easy in a traditionally non-blues/jazz area... a population consisting of country and rock & roll fans.” Ask Julian McDonough, NW drummer and educator, and founder of the Whatcom Jazz Music Art Center (WJMAC): “Jazz music and its creators, as

10

well as its current practitioners, are given little, if any, exposure in this country or in its general cultural landscape. Whatcom Jazz MAC is doing what it can to help change that.” “When I applied for the position this year, the administration was amazingly supportive of jazz and the jazz dynamic,” Woods said. “The energy percolating from the faculty and the students was pretty amazing.” This is a total departure from when Woods got his BA in music from WWU a few years ago. Back then, the jazz students did not “cross-pollinate with the community, which was a detriment in a town like Bellingham, that supports the arts,” Woods said. It was at WWU, as a student, that Woods met Leonard Axelsson, the son of a famous Swedish bass player, who had come to study American jazz. “It’s different in Europe. They tend to emulate our classical jazz of the 20s, 30s, or 40s, or ultramodern jazz. They are missing our 50s-60s hardbop era,” Woods said. Woods and Axelsson “played well together” and have released an album as the Kevin Woods/Leonard Axelsson Quartet. Woods has also released two albums with his Kevin Woods Quartet. His 2014 release, Minor Suggestions, featured Julian McDonough on the drums. He also released No More Waiting in 2014 with his own US based quartet. His goal for the jazz department is to get “the jazz small group playing every two weeks in the community,” Woods said. “You learn the concepts, and then you practice,” he said. “But you grow the most and learn the most when you play for an audience.” Woods has performed locally, and in Italy, South Korea, and Sweden. “Wherever you play, little children GET that swing feel—that joyous, bouncy, playful rhythm that is so unique to jazz.

As adults, we maybe don’t want people to see us smiling and dancing, but kids just get it.” Woods also has aspirations for his larger group of students. He taught at WWU from 2008-2009. His students performed at a “Big Band Bash” then. He is working on a Big Band Bash at Boundary Bay Brewery with the large group for this spring. “”I know it’s a lot of B’s,” he said. As an educator, he has taught music at WCC, WWU, the University of Colorado, and Seakyung College in South Korea, and was professor of jazz studies at Spokane Falls Community College Would it be an adjustment to come from running the jazz program in Spokane to adjusting to the climate here? “I like the moodiness of the weather here,” he said. “When it’s raining as I go to a performance, it’s like me, brooding, before I perform.” He and his wife are the “parents” of “two precocious dogs,” Charger, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel whose only defense is that he is “so cute,” and George, a wild shepherd/black lab mix who is “dumb and sweet.” Woods advises music fans to watch for future dates for his students to perform in the community. The Kevin Woods Quartet will be performing at the WJMAC at the Majestic on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7pm. Admission is $10 general / $5 students, with Kevin on the trumpet, Greg Feingold on bass, and Julian McDonough on the drums. Their website reads, “We are so pleased to feature the new head of the jazz department at WWU, Kevin Woods. Kevin is breathing new life into the jazz program up there, as well as to our jazz scene here in Bellingham. Come check out this phenomenal musician and help give him a proper Bellingham welcome.”

Female Eye Film Festival to Showcase at Pickford’s Doctober Doctober, a month-long series of documentaries held annually at the Pickford Film Center, will include something new this year: a two-day spotlight on women directors presented by the Female Eye Film Festival (FeFF). The eight film festival finalists coming to the Pickford include both full-length feature documentaries and several shorts directed by women. This festival—staged yearly in Toronto, Canada, since 2001— promotes and presents the best work of emerging and established women directors. The eight films to be shown at the Pickford’s Doctober represent the work of directors from the United States, Canada, Germany, Armenia, and Jordan. “It’s terrific to offer a femme-centric perspective at Doctober. The FeFF documentaries presented here are indeed directed by women, but serve to dispel the stereotype that women make films exclusively for female audiences. We trust they will appeal to all,” FeFF’s Founder and Executive Director Leslie Ann Coles said. Coles, along with several of the FeFF filmmakers, will be on hand at their Doctober screening so that the viewing audience can participate in Q&A sessions with them. Included in the full-length documentaries to be shown is Food Fighters, directed by Paula Kaston. Her film follows the Female Eye Film Festival entrepreneurial - Toronto is an international co-founders of competitive film festival Ontario’s Fresh held annually in Toronto, City Farm and Canada. Among FeFF’s short films will be Holodomor: Voices of Survivors, directed by Canadian director/ producer Ariadna Ochrymovych. In her 30-minute film, Canadian Ukrainian survivors movingly share their stories of survival during the Holodomor, a genocide engineered by Joseph Stalin in 1932-33 that decimated the Ukrainian elite and killed millions of men, women, and children. This documentary brings into focus a little known period in Eastern European history, the consequences of which continue to reverberate today. In addition, FeFF will present the director’s cut of Pulling Back Together by local filmmaker Elli Smith. For the Lummi Nation, the waters of the Salish Sea are the highways of their ancestors. Her film follows a group of Native American youth who pull a sea faring canoe through their cultural past and into a more healthy future.

Dine and Dance for Children with Cancer by Joanna Nesbit

Each July at All Saints Camp on Raft Island, a tranquil setting near Gig Harbor, Camp Agape NW hosts children with cancer and their families for a week. Open to families whose children receive treatment in Washington (whether or not families reside in Washington), the camp is entirely free and provides much-needed respite to parents, siblings, and young cancer sufferers. With the mission to nurture the whole family, the camp is a place where children with cancer can feel normal, siblings have a chance to feel special, and parents can take time out from intensive care routines to connect with other parents. Operated under the umbrella of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, the Washington camp is managed and run by the Philoptochos Ladies Society Chapters in the Puget Sound area. Four churches in Seattle cooperatively fundraise year-round for the Northwest camp, which is run on 100 percent volunteer help. Financial

contributions pay for food, water, electricity, and even new equipment such as canoes. Last year for the first time, the Philoptochos Chapter of Bellingham’s St. Sophia Church hosted a dinner to raise funds for the camp. This November, the chapter is hosting a second annual dinner/dance fundraiser at Northwood Hall, 3240 Northwest Ave., on Saturday, November 7, 6pm. They would love the community’s help. The event features a steak and prawn dinner, no-host beer and wine bar, silent auction, and dancing with DJ Dimitri from

Vancouver, BC, well known for his fun presence and international music repertoire. Dust off those dancing shoes because the evening is sure to be a lively cultural experience with Greek and Lebanese music, as well as rock and roll, Western, and any other music Dimitri plays. Harieklia Bryant, president of the St. Sophia Philoptochos Chapter, says not to worry, event organizers will teach Greek and Lebanese dance steps to those unfamiliar with them. Additionally, Camp Agape Seattle’s Andrea Gray will give a short presentation about the camp and its important role in families’ lives. Founded in 1989 in Dunlap, California, Camp Agape went on to establish three more camps in San Diego, Arizona, and Washington. Camp Agape NW began in 1997 with the goal to serve 20 families per year, and all families are invited to attend a second year. Each year, the camp hosts a mix of returning and new families, serving people from all cultures, backgrounds, and faiths. Situated on 18 acres of beachfront property, the camp offers activities all week, including swimming, boating, fishing, crafts, and sports, as well as scheduled time for

parents to relax and connect with other adults facing similar difficulties. Evenings include family skits, singing, and dancing. To attend the camp, children with cancer must have their white cell count up to a certain level and go through an application process to determine they’re healthy enough. Once accepted, nurses are on the camp staff 24 hours a day to monitor medications, and children are paired with a counselor who acts as a mentor. Families are emotionally fatigued when they first arrive at the camp, Bryant says. “But it’s a secure environment and parents get to take a break. On the first day, they’re bewildered, and they don’t know what to do. But by the end of the week, they’re relaxed, happy and feeling relieved.” The whole family returns home rejuvenated. Tickets for the dinner are $50 per person and can be purchased from Georgia Sentkowski by calling 360-2248551 or 360-714-8009. To learn more about Camp Agape NW, visit www.campagapenw.net.

The Art of Death Conference & Expo, Oct. 2-11 by Deborah M. Bernard Reams have been written about the art of living, but very little about the art of dying. Death feels like a taboo topic, and most of us don’t want to “go there.” But, we, and those we love, will all go there one day. The Art of Death Conference offers practical solutions and mind-expanding concepts, “shifting the way we look at death.” “Together we can give our community the web of resources that is truly needed to create the support and care through the full transition from wellness into death and bereavement,” according to Ashely Benem, creator of Benem’s Art of Death. The conference includes 9 days of classes, workshops, presentations, concerts, a film festival, and more. This year’s theme is The Web We Weave, addressing “how we can get tangled in the sticky threads of end of life issues, [and] how we can utilize the web of support to carry us with ease across the unknown path towards death.” Most of the events are free. No preregistration is necessary for most offerings. Bellingham Public Library will provide a wonderful space for most of the conference in the Historic Fairhaven Library. The Main Event Gala will be held at the Whatcom Museum’s Lightcatcher Building on Saturday, October 10 at 6pm. The Web We Weave is a dance and spoken word performance. It will include Key Note Speaker Swil Kanim, along with musical guests and a wine reception with exhibitors from the various agencies and businesses supporting end of life choices. Included will be a private viewing of the museum’s installation of Helmi’s World: Symbol, Myth, Fantasy. Tickets to this evening performance and presentation are $10 adults, $8 students or seniors, free children under 10, and are available at the Food Co-op and at the door. Sponsors include The Community Food Co-op, PeaceHealth, Bellingham Public Library, Death Café in Whatcom County, Elder Law with Barry M. Meyers, Whatcom Cremation and Funeral, A Sacred Passing, Honorworks, Waha, and Compassion and Choices.
