Touring Whatcom County’s Art Scene: The Whatcom Artist Studio Tour

by Courtney Kendall Perhaps you’ve wandered through downtown’s monthly Art Walk, peeked into a local gallery now and again, or simply gawked at the local artwork displayed in one of Whatcom County’s businesses while you’re running an errand or eating a meal. When it comes to October, local artists throw open their studio doors and invite us into their creative spaces to learn more about their work, their creative process, and view their amazing art. The invitation is not one you want to refuse. Now in its 23rd year, the Whatcom Artist Studio Tour (WAST) is a free self-guided tour that was founded in 1995 as a way “to bring the public into artists’ working studios.” Artists must go through an application process in order to participate, and reapply every three years. This ensures that WAST features only original, high-quality artwork. WAST is traditionally held on the first two weekends of October, falling this year on October 7, 8, 14 and 15 with studios open from 10am-5pm each day. It may have begun with ten artists, but today WAST features over 40 artists working in multiple mediums: painting, sculpture of many kinds, glass, leather, jewelry, mixed media, clay, and photography. This year interns from WWU will be joining some WAST artists to help out, offer their own expertise, and have a bit of studio space to show their own work. You can view samples of each artist’s work, along with a brief artist statement, at studiotour.net. A free guidebook and map can be picked up at many restaurants and businesses throughout the county, as well as viewed online, to help you plan your route. For Nancy Canyon, WAST begins before the first visitor even arrives: “I love getting my studio cleaned up and all my paintings framed and hung elegantly.”

“Raven Tree,” acrylic on canvas by Ron Pattern, 30” x 40”. www.patternart.net

Now in her fourth year, Nancy loves “having people come and look and purchase a piece that really means something to them,” as well as engage in conversations with visitors who have been following her work and want to discuss the direction her creativity is taking her. “I find it enjoyable and inspiring,” she says. Ron Pattern participated in WAST from 2005-2012 when his painting studio and gallery was in his home. This year he is rejoining the tour from his studio in the Morgan Block Studios—home to many artists. For Ron, WAST fits in the larger conversation of art and the artist. Of WAST, Ron says that “this co-operative artist event is important, as the old artist/ gallery relationship has changed and there is limited art exhibition space in Bellingham.” As he points out, “It is getting more difficult for artists to obtain gallery representation, bringing work to the art appreciator and collector, as well as the public.” Newcomer to WAST, photographer Alan Sanders, looks forward to

“connect[ing] with the community and promot[ing] the arts in Whatcom County.” “I’m looking forward to answering questions and discussing the work one-on-one,” he says. Alan will be joining WAST veteran Brian O’Neill at his studio where he makes sculptural ceramic vessels. Brian has been on the WAST board for over 10 years and “truly believe[s] it’s the best venue for promoting artists in Whatcom County.” The “vibrant, world class arts community” that Ron describes is open for this limited amount of time to showcase these artists and give everyone the chance to see the creative genius behind Whatcom County’s bustling art scene. “Seeing working artists’ studios is amazing, inspiring, and romantic. I think seeing working spaces and hearing how the artist works is a true gift to the community,” says Nancy. So, come out and support artists this October—and come away with inspiration and a local art piece or two!

Sun, Stone, Water: Photographs by Kevin G. Jones – Mindport Gallery (210

W. Holly St.) continues this showing. In Jones’ words, a good description of this show would be, “Sun, stone and water as seen by camera; a creek when viewed without the benefit of a camera does not look to most people like these images represent. I shot perhaps 100 images of the water, then picked the ones I liked best. They felt like creekness to me, combined with other qualities of light and color that make me happy when sitting in the presence of a mountain stream on and off for five days.” Admission is $3. WJMAC JAZZ Fall Lineup: Cooking in a New Kitchen! by Deborah M. Bernard Bellingham jazz fans, and Bellingham jazz students and musicians, take note! World-class improv jazz is still alive and well in Bellingham. The regular Wednesday night concerts, started in 2014 in the basement of The Majestic by Julian MacDonough, founder of WJMAC (Whatcom Jazz Musical Arts Center), continue this fall in a new home—The Sylvia Center for Performing Arts in downtown Bellingham, the heart of the theater district. The musicians are cooking in a new kitchen! The word “cooking” made its way into the Jazz lexicon a few decades back — “Man, that band is really cooking!” — and people still use the term today to refer to a group that sounds and feels really good together, said Laila Biali, New York jazz pianist and vocalist. “Musicians are like chefs, mixing and experimenting with different ingredients to engage and delight their listeners; and in the realm of improvised music (Jazz), there are usually as many chefs as there are musicians playing. It can take some time to see if a group will click; but when it does, everyone in the room can feel it.” The venue is new; however, WJMAC’s Mission Statement remains: Provide affordable jazz combo classes to aspiring high school musicians (and others), in order to encourage and cultivate not only future jazz artists, but jazz lovers and audience members— and bring the best local, regional and national jazz artists to Bellingham. Jazz combo classes start in October and take place every Sunday from 1:30-3:30pm and 4-6pm. For more information, send an email to info@wjmac.org. MacDonough, award-winning drummer and professional jazz musician himself, (performing over 200 times a year) says that he “has a lot of really cool friends who are world class jazz musicians. Since Bellingham is strategically placed between Seattle and Vancouver, it’s natural that a touring band would stop by.” WJMAC provides some of the most awesome live jazz to be heard in the northwest on a consistent basis. If I said these concerts are “the best kept secret in Bellingham,” I would be lying: Opening night last month was a sellout. So come early, to ensure a good seat.

The October Lineup: October 4: The Mike Van Bebber Quartet: Mike Van Bebber, trumpet player, quartet leader, and veteran WJMAC performer returns! $10 general; $5 students; members and combo students free. October 11: Jazz Forest, & the Ron Jones Big Band, featuring Pete Christlieb: The return of formerly LA-based Grammy and Emmy nominated composer Ron Jones to the NW allows us to invite his big band, Jazz Forest, to the WJMAC stage. “Jazz Forest is about great

Mike Van Bebber

easy, but what he does decidedly is not.” Jeremy will be leading a quartet tonight with Mike Allen manning tenor sax, Michael Glynn’s lovely bass work, and Julian MacDonough on drums. $20 general; $10 WJMAC members; $5 students. October 25: Greg Ruby and the Rhythm Runners Return!: Whether you call it vintage jazz, traditional jazz, or just

Pete Christlieb Jeremy Kahn Greg Ruby and the Rhythm Runners

musicians, great music that moves the soul and a great night out...” Expect a hot night in this new space! $20 general; $10 WJMAC members; $5 students. October 18: Pianist Jeremy Kahn: After a dozen years in NYC, Jeremy Kahn returned to his home turf of Chicago where he has established himself as a performer one doesn’t want to miss. Chicago Tribune music reviewer Harold Reich can’t find enough superlatives to describe Kahn’s playing, making comments such as: “In every selection he played Friday night, Kahn offered a degree of subtlety, elegance, and understatement one does not encounter often enough” and Kahn “makes it look

damn good jazz, this group will make you want to clap your hands and move your feet. The chance meeting between Greg Ruby and Dennis Lichtman ultimately bore fruit in the birth of the Rhythm Runners, a prohibition era jazz band. If you are an aficionado of music history or just a fan of good jazz, you will love this triangle of musicians from New York, New Orleans, and Seattle. Don’t let anything prohibit you from getting to this show. They will heat it up with Julian MacDonough on drums! $10 general; $5 students; members and combo students free.

Doors open at 6:30pm, and the Sylvia is handicapped-accessible. To get to the performance space, go down the side entrance between the Syre Center and what once was the Cascade Laundry Building. Beer, wine, cider, and soft drinks will be available for purchase soon. Concerts are Wednesdays, from 7-9pm at The Sylvia Center for the Performing Arts, 205 Prospect Street in Downtown Bellingham. For membership, tickets, classes, and upcoming concert details, visit www.wjmac.org.

Leaving a Legacy of the Magic of Music by Marla Bronstein In 2004, Maestro Roupen Shakarian stepped up to the podium of the Skagit Symphony orchestra, planning to lead as the interim music director for one year. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. After 14 seasons of being the full-time conductor/ music director, he will step down from the podium and retire this spring with the intention of spending more focused time on creating his own compositions. Maestro Shakarian has programmed this season with pieces that will showcase this group he has come to love and admire. This season’s repertoire consists of a few previously performed pieces that highlight the talents of the symphony members and soloists who have performed with the symphony over the past 14 years. This is his way to say thank you to them, and to celebrate the music they have created together. I had an opportunity to sit down with Shakarian and Marna Fletcher, the Executive Director of the Symphony, to talk about the coming season and the transitions ahead for them personally and professionally. After all these years, what has been the most gratifying to him has been experiencing the growth of the orchestra, Shakarian admitted. He will miss elements of his tenure, such as conducting on a regular basis, the exciting discoveries of working with the repertoire, and bringing interesting and new pieces to the orchestra and players for them to explore and experience together. When pressed, he admitted he will not miss the administrative parts of his job.

Roupen Shakarian is presently in his thirteenth season as music director of the Skagit Symphony.

“There’s a lot of paperwork,” laughed Fletcher. After more than 40 years of working as a conductor and music director, Shakarian looks forward to having long stretches of time to focus solely on composing and guest conducting (if and when asked.) I asked if he had a conducting anecdote that stayed with him. “It’s always a different kind of magical experience that happens with every performance,” he said. “There is always something to discover. Every time you perform a piece, it’s completely different, even if you’ve got the same players.” While his leaving the orchestra at this time wasn’t part of a long-term plan, it is being, if you’ll pardon the pun, wellorchestrated. “The lifecycle for a conductor of a community orchestra is about ten years,” he said. “The orchestra and conductor know what the other is going to say and what he is going to sound like. There are moments where the orchestra just needs a new voice to continue to grow and thrive.”

The Skagit Symphony is celebrating their 38th season this year.

Visit www.ennw.info to view Entertainment News NW on your computer, smartphone or tablet.

Shakarian remembers March 12, 2005 when they performed their first concert in McIntyre Hall, their current home. An easy date to remember: it was his 55th birthday. He feels that regularly performing in that stunning hall has galvanized the orchestra, making it very strong and stable. He also hopes the timing of his leaving and the energy of the orchestra will result in the younger generation of the community and musicians becoming more involved and more engaged. The search process they are using is patterned after one designed by the League of American Orchestras. Applications have been arriving from all over the country. A committee that includes members of the community, symphony, and symphony board members will conduct a thorough review of the applications. Four applicants will be chosen to participate in concert auditions, allowing for all of the symphony members and audiences to give feedback. As of May 2019, the Skagit Symphony will have a new conductor at the podium. Fletcher chimed in, “What’s interesting is that he’s passing the baton, but he doesn’t use a baton. This is the first time in our history the symphony has held formal conductor auditions. It speaks to the Symphony having really matured as an organization. It’s another testament to its growth, stability and the validity of the organization.” The full 2017-2018 Season subscriptions are still available through the month of October, as well as tickets for individual concerts. To order tickets, call the McIntyre Hall Box Office, Tuesday-Friday, between noon and 4pm at 360-416-7727 ext. 2, or 866-624-6897. Tickets are also available to purchase online at www.McIntyreHall.org. Photos courtesy of John Yaeger.

BMC presents Bellingham Burlesque of 1927 – Bellingham Burlesque of 1927

is a bawdy, new cabaret-style musical about a tawdry burlesque troupe that has an engagement in Prohibition-Era Bellingham. The world of 1927 Bellingham is the backdrop, with characters like the Larrabees and Dirty Dan Harris, and landmarks like the Fairhaven Hotel and Yoghurt Sanitarium (the actual name in 1927), and the brand-new Fairhaven Firehouse and Mount Baker Theatre. On a bare stage (sorry for the pun), Martha Benedict, Martin Bray, Amanda Carpp, Akilah Williams, Paul Henderson and Music Director Scott Henderson, deliver more than twenty funny songs by writers like Jerry Herman, Mel Brooks, Cy Coleman and Johnny Mercer, along with vintage blue humor, slapstick, and a few bumps and grinds. Bellingham Burlesque of 1927 is produced by the Bellingham Music Club for its Night Beat series.

Josephine Howell and the Atlantics Bring the Blues to Sudden Valley Jazz Series The blues and jazz have always been close. A lot of people say that jazz actually came out of the blues that were first sung in Southern fields by slaves picking cotton. Other people argue that jazz and blues are two distinct forms of black music, and that jazz actually preceded blues. Then there are the people who don’t give a darn and just want to enjoy the music. That’s our feeling at Sudden Valley as we explore the connection of blues and jazz at the Dance Barn on Sat., Oct. 7 from 3-5pm. Opening the concert with a dancing set is Bellingham’s premiere rhythm and blues band, The Atlantics (pictured above). They haven’t played the Dance Barn for years, although they used to appear here quite regularly. Two of the band members, Cary Stevens and Jeeb Johnson, have actually lived in Sudden Valley. After a brief intermission, Josephine Howell (pictured at left) and her men will take the stage. To predict what Josephine is going to do is like predicting the weather in Bellingham in October. You might take an educated guess, but odds are that you’ll be wrong. Josephine can sing blues, gospel, jazz, Broadway, and sometimes it seems like even she isn’t sure of where the performance is going. One thing that is predictable is that she’ll always wow the audience, and they’ll be calling for more. It is hoped that both bands will combine for a final jam session which will rock the old Dance Barn, but, as with all jazz, we’ll have to see what happens on the day. Tickets for the concert can be purchased at Village Books, the YMCA desk at Sudden Valley, online at www.fswl.org , or by calling K.C.Sulkin at 360-671-1709. Proceeds go to the running of the South Whatcom Library which is located at Gate 2 in Sudden Valley.

Director Shulamit Kleinerman and ensemble from Seattle Historical Arts for Kids.

Performance by Seattle Historical Arts for Kids An instrumental ensemble from Seattle Historical Arts for Kids is coming to perform for Bellingham Music Club members and friends Wed., Oct. 4 at 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bellingham. This performance is free and open to the public. These skilled students, aged 12-15, present the pleasing melodies and beautifully lilting harmonies of Renaissance France on lute, harp, violins, and violas da gamba. The program includes dances by Michael Praetorius, Pierre Attaignant, Pierre Phalese, and Claude Gervaise, and chansons and airs de cour by Pierre Guedron, Claudin LeJeune, and Matthieu Gascogne The ensemble is led from the violin by director Shulamit Kleinerman. With a variety of theatrical and concert programs spanning the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras, Seattle Historical Arts for Kids is the only year-round early music program in both vocal and instrumental music in the U.S. for children and teens. by Margaret Bikman When Pamela Sorensen learned of her friend Shelley Hoeck Johnson’s battle with metastatic breast cancer, she knew she had to become involved in the fight against this disease. The Bellingham residents have been friends for 25 years, and Sorensen has been active in Whatcom County’s Relay for Life for about 15 years. Sorensen’s journey took a different route, however, when she found out about “Real Men Wear Pink,” a national movement centered on breast cancer in men. For the first time in Whatcom County, several men are partners in the organization, which is under the umbrella of the American Cancer Society. Among them: Bellingham City Council member Terry Borneman, Diskin Young of Bellwether Real Estate, and Xavier Cortes at Northwest Chevrolet. “For me the reasons for getting involved are quite personal; both my mother and younger sister died from breast cancer. I have also lost a number of close friends to the hideous disease. I think we need to do what we can to help keep people conscious of both the problem and the need for increased research for a cure,” says Borneman. This year, the support is online only, with the goal of bringing a 5k walk/run to Bellingham in October of 2018, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Participants will receive a kit, which will contain “men’s bling,” says Sorensen. But more importantly, men’s donations go toward treatment, support, and research in the fight against breast cancer. “We have to know how to set up the participants for next year’s event,” she says, and corporate sponsors are encouraged to become involved as well as individual volunteers. In 2016, Real Men Wear Pink raised more than $5.5 million, and the Making Strides Walk raised more than $60 million nation-wide. “Shelley’s my hero,” says Sorensen. “If she can fight this long [17 years] and this hard, surely I can mount a campaign here.” For details, contact Sorensen at 360-224-0898, or pamelazaqt@yahoo.com , or visit www.makingstrideswalk.org.

The Lincoln Theatre

by Osa Hale Mount Vernon, the seat of Skagit County, is a beautiful little town. Built around the Skagit River, it’s known for its annual Tulip Festival Street Fair, its tight-knit community, and its historic Lincoln Theatre. Built in 1926 as a vaudeville theater and silent movie house, the Lincoln Theatre has been a cultural hub and community space for almost a century. Its Spanish motif, a look that was very unique at the time it was built, has aged well. Hand-designed by Seattle architect William Aitken, its lush decorations and classic lighting has kept the Lincoln Theatre looking elegant through the decades. A Wurlitzer organ helped the Lincoln Theatre stand out during the days of silent film; today, it is one of less than a hundred of its kind that remains in its original home in the United States. This mighty pipe organ has been maintained and repaired lovingly throughout the years, and continues to be played to this day. What makes the Lincoln Theatre truly remarkable, though, is the way it is not only preserved, but also fully utilized by the community. Both film and live performances draw audiences through its doors. Internationally respected musicians play on the same stages as local school bands and choirs. Professional plays and musicals delight audiences in the same space that children’s theatre productions find a home. A variety of shows and events raise money for local nonprofits and folks in need. Live music is a huge draw at the Lincoln Theatre. Proud parents can watch their

kids in school performances, and adoring crowds get a chance to see internationally respected musicians. This season alone will host Marc Cohn & The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Good Lovelies, and the Pee Wee Ellis Funk Assembly, among other exciting artists. The holiday season also features a variety of festive musical performances, spanning across cultures and genres. Seeing a movie at the Lincoln Theatre offers a different experience than audiences will find at a standard cinema. Besides the glamorous setting, the theatre also presents a fascinating myriad of viewing options. Independent films, documentaries, and classic movies can all be found at the theater. Occasionally, the movie will come with additional sensory entertainment, like the annual ‘Smell O Vision’ screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory presented by the Lincoln Theatre and Forte Chocolates. The screens at the Lincoln Theatre don’t just show movies, though. Opera lovers can experience top-notch performances through The MET Live in HD, a series of movie-theater transmissions put on by The Metropolitan Opera. Live theatrical performances are also a highlight of the historic theatre. Audiences can enjoy shows ranging from heartfelt and beautifully acted plays done by the local META Performing Arts, to performance art done by local drag queen Betty Desire, to hilarious entertainment provided by comedians and groups like the Comic Strippers.

Of all the entertainment provided by the Lincoln Theatre, perhaps the most precious is that which actively enriches its community. The Lincoln Theatre Center Foundation is an established 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, which allows the theatre and the people involved in it to bring workshops, classes, and events to Mount Vernon that educate and assist the people of Skagit County. The Arts in Education program provides local youth (kindergarten through high school years) with the opportunity to learn about creating and performing arts, often at a greatly reduced price. The Lincoln Theatre also lends its luxurious space to fundraising efforts throughout the year. Two well-loved annual events are the Drive for the Arts Golf Tournament (a partnership with the Avalon Golf Course) and The Original Comedy Night (a fundraising effort powered by the local Kiwanis Club). The Lincoln Theatre’s full range of musical, theatrical, film, and community offerings can be found at www.lincolntheatre.org/calendar. Further questions can be answered by calling the box office at 360-419-7129.

Northwest Ballet Theater Leaps into a New Season Grace and athleticism converge in the striking art known as ballet. Entering its 18th season, Northwest Ballet Theater (NBT) has prepared an exciting lineup that features classical ballet and original choreography to create ballets that have drawn audiences from Vancouver, BC to Portland, OR. The upcoming season promises a delightful combination of the traditional and the contemporary. The season begins in December with The Nutcracker, a long-standing favorite. The magic of The Nutcracker brings audiences back year after year. “It’s a tradition and almost a responsibility to go,” says Artistic Director and

Northwest Ballet Theater will once again present The Nutcracker. It is a Christmas tradition for many to see the timeless story of a young girl named Clara who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King.

Choreographer John Bishop. As much as local residents love this annual treat, NBT has earned the attention and admiration of other audiences. NBT has performed in Port Angeles and Blaine. Despite the holiday favorite’s traditional status, John

and the NBT dancers continue to freshen things up. This year, new scenery, sets, and projection will be added to bring more dimension to the stage. Additionally, new choreography in several scenes will make this year’s performance the most enchanting yet. The Nutcracker will premiere at McIntyre Hall in Mt. Vernon on December 9 at 7:30pm and December 10 at 2pm. The Mount Baker Theatre performances in Bellingham will be held December 22 at 7:30pm, and December 23 and 24 at 2pm. Back by popular demand, there will be a meet and greet with the dancers at the Christmas Eve performance. Bring the whole family for a free family portrait! March will see the excitement of Irish music and dancing filling the air as Northwest Ballet Theater presents Celtic Legends on Saturday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) at 7:30pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. The influence of Irish step dance and music from the wildly popular Riverdance coupled with balletic twists to the choreography will make this original production a winner. Rounding out the season, NBT will be performing Cinderella. This will mark the third time this beloved and hugely popular ballet has been performed in NBT’s 18-year history. This ballet offers something special for all ages and tastes. Prokovief’s enchanting score with exciting new choreography by Artistic Director John Bishop will take you on delightful journey where hope becomes magic (which sometimes misfires) and ends with a young girl’s dream coming true. Elegant costumes, fantastic scenery, artistic lighting, and special effects will leave audiences asking for more. While NBT’s season leaps on, there is exciting news for NBT Academy students. Fifteen of the students will be competing

Get Down on the Farm in Skagit

19th Annual Festival of Family Farms October 7 & 8

Free admission & parking 360-421-4729 www.farmtour.com www.festivaloffamilyfarms.com

by April Metz de Montiel If there ever was a reason to make a weekend trip down on the farm, the Skagit Festival of Family Farms has it all. Take a trip out of the city chaos into the country where quaint accommodations, homegrown food, and hands-on activities await the visitors to this 19th annual family-friendly farm event. Nestled between Vancouver, B.C., and Seattle is the Skagit Valley, fertile farmland and cradle to over 80 different kinds of produce and market wares. The Farm Festival is a non-profit whose mission is to educate the public on where food comes from and how to safely and sustainably farm the land. These farmers are utilizing conservation techniques to ensure these farms will be working in the next hundred years as many of these farms have achieved centennial status—continuously working for over 100 years, some including third or fourth generation farm families. Each with its own prized offering to show and sell, they invite you to sample their wares and see the timehonored traditions and modern inventions that make this agricultural oasis so unique. The weekend of October 7-8, Skagit farmers will throw open their barn doors and garden gates to host visitors and give them a glimpse of the farmer’s lifestyle. Best enjoyed with a night at a local bed and breakfast, you can travel the farm circuit from north to south, Bow to Edison, or east to west, La Conner to Sedro-Woolley. Just follow the orange flags. Even aquaculture is represented by Taylor Shellfish Farm, which raises farmed oysters raised in the tidal beds. The Taylor Shellfish tour offers a kids beach, oyster shucking demonstrations and a lighthouse made entirely of oyster shells. Other traditional activities for the littlest farmers include face painting, tractor rides, and scavenger hunts, while wine and cheese pairing are available for the seasoned master gardener. Demonstrations include cheese making, bee keeping and spinning alpaca wool. An antique farm equipment exhibition and live music performances are also scheduled for festival entertainment.
