Bellingham Theatre Guild Announces Capital Campaign Guild plans to install elevator next summer by Joanna Nesbit Dig in to the stories behind the Bellingham Theatre Guild, the city’s community theater since 1929, and you begin to understand this all-volunteer theater is about relationships. Not only has the Guild performed affordable, quality plays in its H Street home since 1944 (purchased for $1500), it has played a pivotal, sometimes life-saving role over the decades, connecting newcomers to town, providing affordable acting opportunities to children, and even pulling someone from deep depression. Current board members trot out names of long-time volunteers. Dorothy Walker, who is now deceased, sought out the theater as an antidote to her divorce and contributed for more than 50 years. Dick McClure taught at Roeder School (the Bellingham School District administration building) and built coal fires in the theater basement on the afternoon of shows. Carol Osier, a current volunteer of 37 years, got involved so her 8-year-old son could pursue his acting dream at no cost (he went on to become an actor), while she learned how to do makeup, organize props, and handle ticketing. The Guild once tried to track volunteer hours and gave up at 10,000, says volunteer Doug Starcher, who built sets as a high schooler in 1973 and has remained involved. Board President John Purdie says, “There are hundreds of people who are part of making the whole operation happen. For every one person on stage, there are 14 behind the scenes.” Dedicated residents change lightbulbs, sell tickets, weed landscaping, and build sets to help the show go on. This month, with great excitement, the Guild announces its capital campaign to install an elevator, a much-needed

amenity for the building. An elevator goes beyond providing wheelchair access in accordance with modern expectations. It’s profoundly personal for the Guild “family,” who are saddened when long-time volunteers and patrons can no longer attend shows or help out due to infirmity. “I have talked to scores of people who have been faithful theater attendees over the years and now can’t go to productions because they can’t negotiate the stairs,” says Osier. “When that’s taken away, it’s quite painful. We want to be accessible to anyone who wants to come.” Discussions of an elevator have been going on for decades, but it was never the right time financially. The 1903 building required more pressing upgrades, including sprinkler systems, or risked being condemned for good. The board considered the options of relocating or building new, but learned that remodeling the existing structure is most fiscally sensible. Remodeling also preserves the character and karma of the theater. So, it’s time. To install an elevator and a new main entrance facing the parking lot, the building requires significant foundation work to accommodate the elevator’s weight. The project includes sinking “pin piles” into bedrock through the stacked rock and mortar foundation. The projected cost is $900,000, of which $400,000 has been raised over the last two years through pledges and in-hand donations. The Guild board alone contributed $150,000. “We are also actively pursuing a major grant and the support of local philanthropic organizations, and we’ve received positive indications that we’re worthy of being considered,” says Purdie. Now the Guild is turning to the community for help with the final chapter of fundraising, and is deeply grateful for your support. To complete the upgrade in Summer 2016, contributions and pledges must be received by February 2016 to greenlight the permitting process. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival – Celebrating its 26th Season,

Bard on the Beach is one of Canada’s largest not-for-profit, professional Shakespeare Festivals. Presented in a magnificent setting on the waterfront in Vancouver’s Vanier Park, the Festival offers Shakespeare plays, related dramas, and several special events in two performance tents through September. The Festival opened with The Comedy of Errors on the BMO Mainstage. Set in a whimsical Victorian steampunk world, this lively comedy is full of fun and hilarious confusion. Also on the BMO Mainstage will be the timeless tragedy, King Lear, presented in collaboration with Theatre Calgary. On the Howard Family Stage, an adaptation of Love’s Labour’s Lost will bring a 1920s Chicago feel to the intimate Douglas Campbell Theatre tent, complete with live jazz. Whatcom Weavers Guild Conference — Sept. 9-12 in Lynden by Deborah M. Bernard Fabulous Fiber ’15, a conference featuring workshops in weaving, dyeing, felting, spinning and All Things Fiber, will be held at Jansen Art Center, 321 Front Street in Lynden, Wednesday through Saturday, September 9-12. Karen Selk presents the keynote address, “Textile Treasures of Asia,” Wednesday night at 7pm. A textile designer and artist since 1972, she managed Treenway Silks for three decades and travelled extensively through Asia, embracing all aspects of silk production and tradition. Workshops will tweak the imagination of fiber enthusiasts, from beginner to advanced. Exhibit: “Helmi’s World: Symbol, Myth, Fantasy” – This exhibit presents

65 artworks (paintings, drawings, prints and ceramics) drawn from the Whatcom Museum’s collection of Helmi’s work, which numbers 250 objects. Some of her finest pieces are highlighted, including paintings of petroglyphs from Central Washington, and prints based on the Makah Wolf Dance experienced at Neah Bay. The exhibition suggests the complexity of Helmi’s vision by displaying some or her most unusual artworks, where images and symbols from a variety of cultures converge. The influences of Mark Tobey, Pablo Picasso, Scandinavian Folk Art, and Judeo-Christian and Buddhist iconography are also explored. Chuckanut Bay Gallery Changes Ownership by Marla Bronstein Chuckanut Bay Gallery & Sculpture Garden (formerly known as the Chuckanut Bay Gallery and Studio) has been owned and managed by Don and Carol Salisbury since 1986. The store is a landmark on Chuckanut Drive, just south of Fairhaven and north of Arroyo Park. Many loyal customers may be surprised to find out that Carol and Don have sold the business to allow them the joys of full retirement. The Salisburys started thinking about selling the store a year ago. Don, a production potter, had already moved his art studio to his home. Months passed. Enter Nancy and Chris Haley who had always loved the gallery. Nancy is a crafter/artisan, and specializes in garden art. When the Haleys approached the Salisburys about buying the store this past winter, things started to move slowly in that direction. The new owners took possession on August 1. Being in the Gallery comes second nature to Nancy. She says it feels like home. Carol believes they could not have found a better couple to take the business forward. The Salisburys have put so much of their heart into the Gallery that they wanted to make sure new owners would take good care of their loyal customers who continue to support the store. The Haleys are committed to continuing to offer a unique shopping experience incorporating the creativity of hundreds of contributing artisans. 10th Annual Girls Night Out In Fairhaven by Marla Bronstein The 10th Annual Girls Night Out starts at noon on Saturday, September 19 on the streets of Fairhaven. After 6pm, everyone will head down to the Bellingham Cruise Terminal at 355 Harris Avenue for the auction party. Your stamped Passport is your entry to win a fantastic “Passport Prize” that evening. Girls Night Out began in 2005 as a fundraiser for Peace Health Cancer Center’s Clinical Trials Program. Since then, more than $30,000 has been donated to the Peace Health Cancer Center. A team of local women comprised of business owners and professionals, each bringing their own talents to the table, helped to make this event a reality. Shannon Day and Becky Ludwig chair this year’s event. Relying entirely on community donations and volunteers to plan, organize, fund and run this event, this machine is rocking! After the highly successful 2014 event, Becky & Shannon put their heads together to see if there was another local charity that they both felt excited to work with to be benefactor of the 2015 event. Their ongoing partnership with Lydia Place came to the top of the list for a community group that would benefit from their efforts, and the decision was made. Lydia Place was established in 1989 as a transitional home for women with children. Since then, Lydia Place has grown to address the full spectrum of homelessness for all people and households through community partnerships, programs and services. In

addition to the original Transitional Housing Program, Lydia Place now operates the Supportive Services Program, the Whatcom Homeless Services Center Program, and the Emergency House. All of these programs are collaborations with community partners such as the Bellingham Housing Authority, who are also working to end homelessness in Whatcom County. The mission of Lydia Place is to support all people in establishing sustained independence by providing housing, supportive services, advocacy, education, and by raising awareness of the faces and causes of homelessness. Drew Betz, Lydia Place Board President, states that the agency’s programs and its collaboration with the Bellingham Housing Authority enable the organization to serve a greater number of homeless adults and children in our community. This is a fundraiser that involves much more than just shopping, auctions, and adult beverages. It’s mostly about community. Fairhaven Gets Jazzy by Marla Bronstein I recently met with Jud Sherwood of The Jazz Project on a hot summer afternoon in the Boundary Bay Beer Garden. Jud spoke of his feverish anticipation of the 5th Annual Jazz Festival. (Maybe it was the afternoon heat.) The newly rebranded Bellhaven Jazz Festival is free to the public, thanks to the cooperative efforts of The Jazz Project and the many individual, corporate, and government sponsors. Kids return to school during the height of the local farms’ harvest season. The City of Bellingham officially proclaimed September as Eat Local First Month four years ago, and the legacy—and the enthusiastic participation from both consumers and local farmers and fishers—has grown as fast as a field of corn in Ferndale. Or should I say a raspberry patch in Whatcom County? Since we now produce the most raspberries of any county in Washington State. Sustainable Connections is a local non-profit that hosts and promotes food and farm related events, and promotes local restaurants that have agreed to offer “Eat Local Month Specials” that feature more than 50 per cent local ingredients. And Smack Dab in the middle of Eat Local Month—the second Saturday of September, to be exact, which is September 12, this year—is the Whatcom County Farm Tour. From 10am-5pm that Saturday, you can see, taste, and explore Whatcom County’s diverse family-owned farms, on a free, self-guided tour. There are 12 tour stops: 10 family-owned farms, the Bellingham Farmer’s Market, and one winery. This year the winery is Vartanyan Estate Winery, a woman-owned vineyard. Margarita Vartanyan uses local grapes plus some grapes from Eastern Washington to create her whimsical and award-winning wines. “We feature a different winery every year,” Becca told me. “You know, spread the love around! Most vineyards started off as farms, which is why we include them.” Any family doing the whole tour will savor the flavors of our region by sampling fresh produce, cheese, apples, chocolate milk, wine and more. Many of the farms are not open to the public except during the Farm Tour. But all of the stops are kid-friendly. They feature activities that provide teaching moments that are also downright fun. “You just can’t go wrong petting a cow, dropping an apple into a cider mill, or helping to make cheese,” Becca said. “Plus, the kids will get a true sense of where their organically grown food comes from. It’s a great experience for all ages!” Becca said that about 3500 people come out for the day. “Most of the stops have at least 100, depending on their activities and attractions.
