SeaFeast – Bellingham Celebrates Local Bounty by Justin Hawkinson For generations, Bellingham Bay has been a safe harbor for maritime harvesters. This year the city will be throwing a party to celebrate seafood and honor the thousands of local “salts” who have contributed to the industry. Bellingham SeaFeast 2016 plans to attract ten thousand people to learn, share, celebrate, and eat the offerings of the Salish Sea and surrounding waterways. Most of the events are free to attend and immerse the public in the culture of the salmon, crab, oyster, and other seafood industries. Major sponsors include Bornstein Seafoods Inc., Haggen Northwest Fresh, and The City of Bellingham.

chance to compete. A team of local food experts will judge the entries throughout the day and the highest rated dishes in each category will be awarded $100 for bronze, $200 for silver, and $300 for gold. An additional $700 will go to the overall winning team.

“I believe that SeaFeast will highlight the importance of maritime jobs and investments to both the City and the Port, and show appreciation for the good stewardship that is required to maintain these industries,” said Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville, an early proponent of the festival. A full weekend of themed activities will kick off on Friday, September 30. Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro will host FisherPoets-on-Bellingham Bay, a group of the fishing industry’s more eloquent wordsmiths who share their poems, songs and tales of the sea. Honey Moon Mead & Cider will feature Sea Shanties, a musical offshoot of the FisherPoets. Other activities, tours, day trips, lodging, adventure packages and volunteer opportunities can be found through a link at www.BellinghamSeaFeast.com. On Saturday, October 1, Squalicum Harbor and Zuanich Point Park will be the epicenter for a full spectrum of familyfriendly excitement from 10am until 8pm. Guests will be encouraged to park nearby

The Grand Finale of the festival will be a ticketed banquet Saturday evening at The Bellwether Hotel Ballroom, showcasing over 40 types of seafood. Winners of the Salmon BBQ Grilling Contest will be acknowledged and SeaFeast organizers will be honoring individuals or families that have contributed significantly to the local fishing industry with an award called “Living Legacies.” Banquet attendees will also be treated to the premier of Sea to Plate, a film showcasing the local fishing industry by following the path of a seafood harvest. “Everyone will experience why the ocean, the bay, and fish set Bellingham apart as a place they will always remember fondly,” said Debbie Granger, General Manager and founder of the event. Whatcom County Farm Tour & Skagit Valley Festival of Family Farms by Osa Hale Western Washington is a truly magical place, agriculturally speaking. It’s a land of plenty, with farms and orchards and gardens full of food and beauty. There is no better time to appreciate this than the harvest, when the hard work and passion of local farmers shines through the plants (and animals) that are reaching their peak fruition in early fall. There are two expansive programs that allow participants to enjoy this bounty, to learn about the farms that feed them, and to see for themselves the natural riches of the land. The first is the Whatcom County Farm Tour, which takes place on September 10. The second is Skagit Valley Festival of Family Farms on October 1 and 2. The Whatcom County Farm Tour is a self-guided chance for people to explore the region’s farms, dairies, farmers markets, orchards, and even a winery. Participants can tour all twelve stops across the county, or go by category or region. Even a single stop can bring a wealth of fun and education to individuals and families alike. The whole process, from seed to table, is laid out in a beautiful display. The farms open for visitors to tour are Joe’s Gardens (Bellingham), Cloud Mountain Farm Center (Everson), Ten Fold Farm (Bellingham), and Ulrich Farm & Nursery (Ferndale). Each of these farms offers the opportunity to see our food being grown, through open doors, guided tours, and produce tasting. The dairies participating are Twin Brook Creamery (Lynden), MyShan Dairy (Lynden), The Cheese Shop at Appel Farms (Ferndale), and Ferndale Farmstead. Visitors to these dairies will get to see (and pet) the hardworking cows that give this county their milk, learn about the many processes used to create delicious dairy products, and sample milks and cheeses. Bellingham’s Bellewood Acres & Distillery and Vartanyan Estate Winery are unique stops on the

Whatcom County Farm Tour. Bellewood Acres & Distillery is known throughout the county as a great place to pick apples and pumpkins, but it is so much more. Tour participants can also learn about the nearby stream and how fish and farms coexist, as well as finding out just what a corn cannon is. The Vartanyan Estate Winery is offering a chance to see, up close, the age-old tradition of making wine, from the vine to the barrel to the bottle (with tasting, of course). To see where it all comes together, participants can check out Bellingham Farmers Market and Twin Sisters Farmers Market (Deming). There, all the work put in by farmers across the county come together and are put up for sale, and the farm-to-table cycle continues. One county over, the Skagit Valley Festival of Family Farms celebrates the people, animals and plants bringing bountiful riches to the markets and tables of its residents. From 10am to 4pm on October 1 and 2, farms across the entire county are opening themselves up to anyone who wants to learn about where their food comes from. There is truly an abundance of farms that families (and individuals) can visit. Interested in a straightforward farm experience? There’s Hedlin Family Farm in La Conner (bonus: free samples of pickles and sauerkraut), South Fork Farms in Mt. Vernon (with alpacas a-plenty), and La Conner Flats. For farms that will focus on the autumnal joys of apple picking, pumpkin patches, and corn mazes, check out Gordon Skagit Farms (Mt. Vernon), Schuh Farms (Mt. Vernon), Cascadian Farm (Rockport), and Eagle Haven Winery/Perkins Apple Orchard (SedroWoolley). For a more in-depth look at how you can grow your own food, visit RoozenGaarde in Mt. Vernon, a display garden full of educational opportunities. Our food comes from many places, and farms take many forms. One of the most exciting parts of these farm tours is to see the food sources that may sometimes be forgotten. From milk and cheese to high-quality beef, the contribution of the

cow cannot be forgotten. Stop by Samish River Dairy (Bow), Double O Ranch (Concrete), or Hemlock Highlands (Sedro-Woolley) to learn about cattle and dairy farms. If you’re just crazy about berries, Bow Hill Blueberries (Bow) is the place to be for fresh blueberries and more blueberries products than you can count. Finally, the west coast palate would not be complete without quality seafood, and plenty of that comes from Taylor Shellfish, found in the tidelands of the Samish Bay in Bow. Skagit River Salmon Festival by Marla Bronstein The Fifth Annual Skagit River Salmon Festival will take place on Saturday, September 10 from 10am-6pm at the Waterfront Park at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge. I spoke with Board President Kevin Tate, who has been with the Festival since it was established in 2012. Created to inspire conservation of the Skagit Watershed, this community celebration showcases the Skagit River and its rich history. Thirty local businesses, agencies, and community groups will participate in the festival to promote stewardship of the watershed’s natural and cultural resources Last year, more than 6,000 people enjoyed the full-day event, complete with food, music, education, artisan wares, and environmental education.

Hovander Homestead Bluegrass Festival, Sept. 2-5 at Hovander Park in Ferndale. The festival opens Friday evening with a salmon feed. Opera Latte – Opera Latte

is two short comic operas about coffee: La Serva Padrona by Pergolesi and The Coffee Cantata by J.S. Bach. The works represent the musical theater of the Baroque period. In one, an arrogant maid cons her master into marrying her so she won’t have to submit to a mistress. In the other, a father berates his daughter for her coffee habit. Eventually, daughter and father reconcile when he agrees to have a guaranteed three cups of coffee a day written into her marriage contract (remember, this was written in 1735). Dinner Dance for Camp Agape by Courtney Kendall For children with cancer and their families, Camp Agape NW provides a vital respite and a chance for families to spend a week together in a nurturing and loving environment. The camp is located at All Saints Camp on Raft Island near Gig Harbor where 18 acres of forest and beachfront property set the stage for fun activities such as crafts, boating, fishing, and time to relax. It gives “children with cancer a chance to feel normal, siblings a chance to feel special, and parents a time to be together.” The camp is free to families whose children are receiving cancer treatment in Washington. The camp is made possible through the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a Greek Orthodox women’s philanthropic group. Four Puget Sound area Philoptochos Societies fundraise year-round to help support camp costs. This year the Philoptochos Chapter of Bellingham’s St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church will hold their 3rd annual dinner and dance to raise funds for Camp Agape NW. The benefit will be held at Northwood Hall on Saturday, October 22 at 6pm. The event will start with a steak and prawn dinner and a no-host bar. Dancing will round out the evening with DJ Dimitri from Vancouver, noted as one of the top Greek DJs. “Everybody gets up and dances and it’s really a lot of fun,” says Harieklia Bryant, the president of the St. Sophia Philoptochos Society. Broadway Takes on Politics at The Firehouse Musical comedy and political satire are running-mates in Broadway Takes on Politics, a new cabaret-style musical playing at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, October 6-8. “This is election humor, just when we’ll need it most,” said Scott Henderson, the music director for the show, “And nothing is funnier than singing and dancing mayors, senators and presidents.” Since Gilbert and Sullivan started poking fun at the British Parliament, political figures have long been fodder for the Broadway stage. Entire shows have been written on electoral politics, from Gershwin and Berlin through Sondheim and the current hit, Hamilton, about that rap-singing founding father, Alexander Hamilton. “We started with 100 Broadway shows, and whittled them down to 30,” said Henderson, “going really deep to find the most comic figures to ever put their soap-box on a stage. We parody Presidential debates, talk shows, press conferences, fundraisers, and, of course, the inevitable courtroom.”

Playing Monopoly with God and Other True Stories When Melissa Bangs left New York City in 2004 to return home to Montana, her comedy class and live performances in front of NYC audiences were among the hardest parts to leave behind. She never imagined that the next time she’d be performing comedy live on-stage, she’d be telling the true story of her agonizing journey to the psych ward. In September 2012, at 40 years old, Bangs gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Adelaide. One month later, profoundly sleep deprived, Bangs was admitted to the Providence Psychological Inpatient Unit in a complete manic state, emerging almost a month later with a bipolar diagnosis and a prescription for lithium. What followed was an extraordinary journey, one she has transformed into a non-fiction storytelling experience that is both wildly funny and terribly tragic.

Bangs has packed houses and sold out shows throughout Montana, her home state. Nearly 2,000 people have heard her harrowing tale in the past year and a half. The most common bit of feedback she hears is, “I was laughing or crying the entire time.” She also heard, again and again, “You have to keep telling this story. You are saving lives.” And so she is. While this show is definitely for parents that have experienced a rough postpartum patch, it is equally for anyone that has experienced loss. Bangs says, “We’ve all had our postpartum psychosis. Yours might have been cancer, divorce or the death of a dear one. For anyone that has ever arrived in a moment in life in which the bottom momentarily drops out and there is no instruction manual, this story is for you.” She adds with a smile, “If you are human, this story is for you.” Bangs hopes that by telling this story with a large dose of truth, humor and self-love, she will give others permission

to tell their stories, shed shame, overcome paralysis, and follow their guts. Montana’s State Director of Public Health and Human Services, Richard Opper, reflected after seeing Melissa’s sold-out show at the Myrna Loy in Helena, “If we have a public health crisis, it is mental health. We don’t have a support system. There is a stigma associated with mental health. The best way to get over that is to tell a deeply moving, personal story. People can relate to that. Northwest Ballet Theater Leaps into New Season

Entering into its 18th season, Northwest Ballet Theater (NBT) has prepared an exciting lineup that features classical ballet and original choreography to create ballets that have drawn audiences from Vancouver, BC, to Portland, OR. The upcoming season promises a delightful combination of the traditional and contemporary. The Nutcracker, a long-standing tradition, will start the season off in December. The magic of The Nutcracker, Artistic Director and Choreographer John Bishop says, draws audiences from all over. “It’s a tradition and almost a responsibility to go,” laughs John. As much as we Bellinghamsters love the yearly showing, NBT has earned the attention of other audiences and even took The Nutcracker on the road to Port

Angeles for their 16th season. Despite the holiday favorite’s traditional status, John and the NBT dancers continue to freshen things up. This year, new scenery, sets, and projection will be added to bring more dimension to the stage, as well as new choreography in several scenes. The Nutcracker will premiere at McIntyre Hall in Mt. Vernon on December 17 at 7:30pm and December

18 at 2pm. The Mount Baker Theatre performance in Bellingham will be held December 23 at 7:30pm, with a Christmas Eve matinee on December 24 at 2pm. John promises something extra special for the Christmas Eve showing for the families who come to share in the magic of The Nutcracker and applaud the hard work of its dancers. Last year NBT featured an original one-act ballet, Remembering Chaplin, which was featured as a part of the 2016 Northwest Dance Festival. The reception was so favorable, John has expanded it into a full-length ballet—the first fulllength ballet to be done on Charlie Chaplin. In the first version “we went simple,” John explains. “We went for the slapstick and did vignettes and impressions of the movies he had done.” With the expansion, John decided to make the ballet more personal and specific to Chaplin’s life. He has included scenes that reflect Chaplin’s earlier and later life outside of acting. Remembering Chaplin will debut at the Mount Baker Theatre, which John feels is particularly relevant given Mount Baker Theatre’s vaudeville history. The show will be March 4 at 7:30pm. Another NBT original ballet from 2016, Alice in Wonderland, will be making a comeback during the 18th season. Marine invertebrates make up more than ninety-eight percent of the known animal species in the ocean, yet they remain elusive to most of us. This fall, the Whatcom Museum presents a photography exhibition that offers a rare glimpse into their mysterious world, Spineless: Portraits of Marine Invertebrates by Susan Middleton. The result of several years of fieldwork across the Pacific Ocean, this exhibition shows rarely or never-before-seen ocean dwellers. Many of the creatures inhabit Northwest waters and were photographed at Friday Harbor Marine Lab on San Juan Island. Art-Oberfest and Semiahmoo Oktoberfest

by Osa Hale Oktoberfest — a time of celebration and jovial libation, first in Germany and now across the world. As people gather to enjoy the fruits of the harvest and the air starts to bite with the coming cold, it is the ideal time to raise a glass and toast the good things in life. Here in NW Washington, there are many opportunities to do just that. One chance to celebrate is Semiahmoo Resort’s Oktoberfest, a decadent affair on Sunday, October 9. Hosted in the resort’s outdoor tent, it will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. The tent is out on a

dock with gorgeous views of Drayton Harbor and Semiahmoo Bay, a perfect backdrop for the afternoon festivities. Guests to the event can expect a lavish spread, with traditional German food and top-notch local beer. They are welcome to enjoy these delicious delights at a communal table, in traditional Oktoberfest biergarten style. Tickets are available at the door, although making a reservation is highly recommended. A $25 fee includes entry to the event and a meal, $35 gets you all that, plus a commemorative beer stein. Another fantastic way to celebrate fall and beauty in the Northwest is the Blaine Harbor Art Gallery’s Art-Oberfest. Happening on the same weekend as the Semiahmoo Resort’s Oktoberfest, this combination of art show and gift market is a perfect chance to appreciate local talent and pick up some gifts for the upcoming holiday season. The artists featured at the gallery are all residents of Whatcom County, and represent a wide variety of mediums. Ranging in age and experience, these people are watercolor painters, mixed media artists, fine woodworkers, fiber artists, photographers, book artists, metal artisans, and jewelers... and their handiwork is proudly on display. In keeping with the festive air of the weekend, Art-Oberfest will feature live music from The Polka Dots, a digitalaccordion-playing pair of ladies who will delight the crowd with polkas and old-time waltzes. Taking place all day on Saturday, October 8, Art-Oberfest is a free event.
