Metalmorphosis: Georgia-Pacific Pulp and Paper Mill New Paintings by Trish Harding by Nancy Canyon The public is invited to Trish Harding’s Studio UFO gallery reception, Friday, September 8 from 6-9pm. The artist will show new paintings: a historical account of the Georgia-Pacific plant. Enjoy live music, refreshments, and free admission at the gallery on Holly Street. In the early 2000s, when the GeorgiaPacific Tissue Mill was still operating, Trish Harding often carried oils and a plein-air easel to the Blackburn parking lot and set up for a day of painting. “I had this love affair with the plant. I painted it religiously for a long time.” One day flashes of light from welders’ torches sparked from buildings. The plant was in the beginning stages of coming down. “Men wearing hard hats wandered out of the buildings to eat their lunches,” she says. “They were cutting out the tanks, taking down buildings, changing the landscape as we’d known it.” As the plant came down, Trish took a hiatus from painting. “When it became the skeletal remains of an operating paper mill—the bones before gentrification— I went back to the site with its shiny industrial surfaces reflecting watershimmer off the bay, and documented what I loved about the mill.” “The paintings are rendered on recycled sheet metal treated with vinegar to roughen the surface.” Trish previews one piece done from the vantage point of C Street, looking south over the canal. “I painted the terrible beauty of things down,” she says, “sun low in the sky, gravel and tanks glistening.” Over a period of fifteen years, she watched the plant go from an operating mill to what it is now—six rocket-ship-like

metal structures, stacks, and an acid ball, which will eventually move to the Granary Park. “There was a period of time when the deconstruction machinery looked like dinosaurs.,” says Trish. “If it had been financially feasible to keep the plant running, it would still pollute the air and ground. It would be a dinosaur.”

Many pieces are painted in oil. Some are pastel on metal, coated with a clear-drying body to create a coarse tooth. In juxtaposition, a few paintings are pastels on velour, to give a more feminine look to the industrial site.

As I listen, Trish’s emotional connection to the plant’s history shows in her expressions. She grew up visiting the plant on Saturdays, as her father was an accountant in one of the huge, 93’ buildings. “It was like going to Gotham City, enormous and dark, and our dad sitting behind a desk with giant green ledgers and an adding machine with a crank lever rolling out tape,” she says. The piece I view is done in painterly browns, blues, and grays. The water is teal with bits of silver metal showing through from beneath. The sky sparkles. “The visual impact of Bellingham light is amazing,” Trish says. “I love how the sky

Harding says she paints “beauty and intimacy, rendering objects, some that aren’t seemingly beautiful.” As her love affair with the plant continues to capture the terrible beauty in paint, we benefit as well from a historical account of what has come before and what continues in the present. Call to Artists: Ragfinery’s Sewing Rodeo Live Sewing Challenge – In

celebration of National Sewing Month in September, Ragfinery will host a 2-day, fun-filled, nail-biting, live sewing and design challenge. Teams will be given their design parameters, and have one evening to envision their project, doing a mad dash to select materials, and one day to sew at Ragfinery! In Jones words, a good description of this show would be, “sun, stone and water as seen by camera; a creek when viewed without the benefit of a camera does not look to most people like what these images represent. Mount Baker Theatre 2017-18 Season by Osa Hale On North Commercial Street in Bellingham is a beautiful old building, one that is recognized locally and nationally as a historic landmark. Built 90 years ago, the Mount Baker Theatre was created as a source of entertainment for the growing city. Today, it is a thriving venue that hosts an impressive variety of performances, from internationally acclaimed musicians, to beloved stage performances. A particularly stellar performance can be expected from Shemekia Copeland, a powerhouse blues singer who will be joined by the equally expressive Matt Andersen for a night of soulful crooning on November 3. In addition to artists performing original music, there will be a handful of carefully crafted musical tributes. A Night with Janis Joplin (October 14) is a Broadway storytelling musical that follows Joplin’s tragically short yet historically brilliant time in the world of rock ‘n’ roll. The Simon & Garfunkel Story (October 29) has entertained audiences in several countries, telling the story of an iconic duo through multimedia and live music. Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary) pays tribute not to a specific artist, but to a genre of music as he explores American folk music in Lonesome Traveler: The Concert (March 3, 2018). Rounding out the 2017-18 season at the Mount Baker Theatre will be a handful of folks who command the stage simply with their words. Pee Wee Ellis – After some 55 eventful

years as a musician, band leader, arranger and composer Pee Wee Ellis is still touring the world and working on new collaborations, despite his fast-approaching 75th birthday. His remarkable story spans six decades, starting in the 50s when he took himself and his sax off to New York city to find his heroes Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and the great Sonny Rollins (who became his teacher and mentor). A promising career leading jazz bands in Florida took an unexpected turn in 1965 when he joined James Brown’s sensational Revue, playing alto. Within six

BMC presents Bellingham Burlesque of 1927 Bellingham Burlesque of 1927 is a bawdy, new cabaret-style musical about a tawdry burlesque troupe that has an engagement in Prohibition-Era Bellingham. The crass but lovable comic, Paul, is the “Top Banana,” who berates his dutiful “Straight Man,” Marty, and spars with song-belter and “Diva,” Keely. On a bare stage (sorry for the pun), Martha Benedict, Martin Bray, Amanda Carpp, Akilah Williams, Paul Henderson and Music Director Scott Henderson, deliver more than twenty funny songs by writers like Jerry Herman, Mel Brooks, Cy Coleman and Johnny Mercer, along with vintage blue humor, slapstick, and a few bumps and grinds. Martha Benedict is a veteran of three prior cabaret shows. “At the end of the show – or the derriere, as we burlesque folk like to say – there is a revealing twist. A very apt word for this show,” says Martha. “Our big closing act pretty much closes down the show too, because the police are banging on the stage door. I think we all grab our bags and head for the border. Bicycle Confidence Class for Adults by April Metz de Montiel Riding bikes and walking are known for their health benefits, but are also impactful in reducing traffic congestion and our carbon footprint. According to Kirsten Wert, the Smart Trips Coordinator for the Whatcom Council of Governments, “Forty percent of the trips we drive are 2 miles or less. Two miles is 10-15 minutes on a bike.” If everyone in the community identified times when car alternatives could be used to run errands, Whatcom County as a whole would be healthier, both for the people, traffic and environment. Smart Trips, a local program that promotes walking, cycling, ride-sharing and utilizing the city bus, is offering a class on September 10 for anyone interested in sharpening their safety skills for riding Whatcom County streets. The first half of the class will be presented in a classroom setting while the second half will incorporate the safety skills in a group bike ride. The 2017 Confident City Cycling Class participants will learn how to put a bike on a bus, maneuver in multi-lane traffic and use the recently implemented green bike boxes on city streets. The only skills necessary are the ability to ride, start, and stop a bicycle. Smarts Trips was an initiative developed in 2006 by Susan Horst, Director of Mobility Programs. In its 11th year, there are approximately 20,000 Whatcom County participants. The program incentivizes its members with prizes when they log miles on the Smart Trips website. Multiple Whatcom County employers also partner with Smart Trips to encourage employees to use the website tools in their commute. SeaFeast 2017: Harvesting Northwest Fun Nobody celebrates quite like fishermen when the catch is in. On September 22 and 23, Bellingham plans to show the world its maritime culture and the tasty food it produces with Bellingham SeaFeast 2017. Most of the attractions are free, and the organizers have planned for about ten thousand people to walk through this epic weekend of seafood and community celebrations. The events begin downtown on Friday, September 22 with SeaFeed at the Square, a $50-a-ticket event featuring oysters, Dungeness crab, and salmon at Depot Market Square on Railroad Avenue. Doors will open at 5pm. Taylor Shellfish will host a large display of raw oysters. Drayton Harbor Oysters will serve their catch both raw and grilled. Bornstein Seafoods will have a table to showcase fresh salmon cooked on a commercial grill. Crave Catering is planning their own version of a Pacific Northwest Crab Boil and other side dishes. By featuring local seafood and produce, the SeaFeast team expects to get people in the maritime spirit before experiencing the local nightlife. A short presentation is scheduled at 6:30, and at 8:30 this room will be one of four places where people can hear the words of FisherPoets-onBellingham Bay ($5 badge good for all venues). Expanded from last year, FisherPoets are a dedicated group of fish hunting writers and musicians who share poetry, play instruments, tell stories of the sea, and sing “shanties” in front of an audience. Guests of the SeaFeed can stay near the Depot Market stage or check out similar FisherPoets programs nearby at Boundary Bay Brewery, Chuckanut Brewery, and Honey Moon Mead & Cider. SeaFeast activities on Saturday, August 23 will take place at Squalicum Harbor on

Bellingham Bay. Expect educational booths from local non-profits; vendors; food trucks; dock walks; boat rides & tours, plus live music and entertainment for all ages starting at 11am. The Brews with a View Beer Garden will feature fine local beer, wine, and hard cider near the Main Stage on the 4.4-acre Zuanich Point Park. This beautiful green space is surrounded by water and has amazing

views of the Bellingham area. Several boats dock nearby and the park is home to the Fisherman’s Memorial statue as well as the Squalicum Boathouse. The stage will host musical acts and awards announcements throughout the day. throughout the day there will be a few timely highlights that you don’t want to miss. “Skill of the Grill” Salmon BBQ Championships 2017 will pit 10 teams in a contest to cook the best salmon for cash prizes. Like last year, a blind judging panel will award $800 in cash prizes, but unlike last year the public will also get to vote for a $300 People’s Choice Award. Tasting tickets can be purchased by the crowd and will be tallied to choose a winner. An oyster shucking/eating contest and a Coast Guard rescue-at-sea drill will also draw a crowd, so check your programs for times and locations of each

heat. Survival suit races always get people cheering, and two guided boat tours will offer chances to get up close to the downtown waterfront renovation, or to tour Bellingham Cold Storage and HomePort Seafoods processing plant ($10 tickets online). The festival culminates with Taste the Sea: A Sustainable Seafood Experience hosted by Haggen Northwest Fresh in four sessions from 11:30am4pm. This ticketed event at the Squalicum Boathouse will feature experts sourcing premium, sustainably harvested seafoods at stations and describing the where and how the salmon, cod, herring, shellfish and more were harvested and how they can be prepared. Two WWII Exhibits – The Skagit County Historical Museum (501 S. 4th St., La Conner) has two exhibits on display through Oct. 8: Washington Remembers World War II and The Skagit Homefront. Tribulations into Triumph: Holocaust Survivor Fred Fragner – Local author,

Susan Lynn Sloan, will present some of the lessons that she learned from writing the story of Fred Fragner, a Holocaust survivor who lived out the last years of his life in Bellingham. In his twenties, Fred was shot, captured, and tortured by the Nazis and sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp for five years. After the war, he served as principal of one of the United Nations centers for orphaned children of WWII. Fred was able to take what he learned and created a wonderful life for himself and those who knew him. Come and learn about Fred’s greatest life lesson, to respect one another. Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War Bellingham TheatreWorks continues its commitment to celebrating stories of significance to the Pacific Northwest by premiering Steve Lyons’ comedy Mrs. Bave Presents the Pig War. Subtitled “The Almost True Story of a Play That Nearly Happened about a War That Never Occurred,” at the center of this comedy is the Pig War of 1859, which was a border dispute between the United States and Britain over ownership of the San Juan Islands. This war is significant because ultimately there was no war—peace was chosen instead. This comedy is inspired by the wacky, true tale of Emilia Bave and her “San Juan Saga.” Mrs. Bave’s play was originally presented in 1959 on San Juan Island in celebration of the centennial of the Pig War. The premier of the play featured local acting talent. However, when she wanted to re-mount the play the following year, she found no one wanted to be in it! Undaunted, she re-wrote the script to be a narration with the reluctant actors replaced by mannequins. Using her mannequin cast, she presented her play to unsuspecting visitors for nearly 20 years. In our comedy, Mrs. Bave’s cantankerous Pig War mannequins spring to life. When they discover how horrible the script is, even the mannequins refuse to be in her play unless they can tell the true story of the Pig War! So, Mrs. Bave presents the actual Pig War tale, as told by the mannequins who were there. The Pig War is one of the few examples in our country’s history in which diplomacy triumphs over war. Fifth Inversion performs at NFA Convention – WWU’s faculty wind

quintet, Fifth Inversion, was featured at the 2017 National Flute Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota in August, performing 5 new, 5-minute compositions by 5 WWU faculty composers. Fifth Inversion is comprised of WWU faculty including flute instructor Lisa McCarthy, oboe instructor Jennifer Weeks, clarinet instructor Erika Block, bassoon instructor Pat Nelson, and horn instructor Gustavo Camacho. The National Flute Association selected their proposal “5x5x5” out of nearly 500 entries. Their performance at the convention premiered five new compositions by WWU faculty members. Each composer was given the guideline of writing a 5-minute work for wind quintet using the number 5 as their theme. The results are stunning! Each composition reveals a unique interpretation of the number 5, and includes explorations into new sounds for this traditional ensemble. Fifth Inversion’s NFA debut featured the premiere of Roger Briggs’ “Serpents,” Bruce Hamilton’s “Comminglings,” Lesley Sommers’ “Grabber,” Adam Haws’ “You Look Different,” and Todd Smith’s “Five as One.” The quintet plans to perform these works locally in a recital at the WWU PAC on January 28, 2018 at 3pm.

Driver’s Education Scholarship Program – Blue Skies for Children, a local

non-profit serving homeless, low-income and foster children, is pleased to announce its Driver’s Education Scholarship Program is open and accepting applications. CASCADIA International Women’s Film Festival announces Film Screening Fundraiser Megan Leavey CASCADIA International Womens Film Festival will present a special outdoor screening of the film Megan Leavey at Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro’s Beer Garden on September 9 beginning at 8pm. The event is intended to help raise both funds and awareness for the CASCADIA film festival as well as showcase a sensitive, uplifting film made by a woman about an outstanding woman. Admission is just $10. As a thank you for their service, active duty military and veterans with valid military I.D. will receive free admission. The event is generously sponsored by Barbara Vz Howard, whose partner was a U.S. Marine pilot in the Vietnam War. They are supporters of Keeping K-9s in Kevlar. K-9 Officer Deputy Jason Nyhus and K-9 Hyde of Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department will be on-hand after the film for a short presentation and to answer audience questions about this harrowing work. Keeping K-9s in Kevlar is a Bellingham-based nonprofit that purchases Kevlar vests for law enforcement dogs in need. Each vest that is donated honors a fallen officer. In addition, Boundary Bay Brewery is generously donating The Beer Garden and projection equipment for the evening’s event. Megan Leavey is based on the true story of Marine Corporal Megan Leavey whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog, an aggressive German shepherd Rex, saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy. For their dedication and heroism, they received the Purple Heart. The film was directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) from a screenplay by Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt and stars Kate Mara, Edie Falco, Ramón Rodríguez, Bradley Whitford, and Common. Megan Leavey is a wonderful, warm film about their special relationship and loyalty as well as the story of a woman in an unconventional role. Gretchen Kulpa from the Whatcom Dahlia Society will provide basic dahlia information (flower types, general care, staking requirements, winterizing, dividing, etc.) at the monthly meeting of the Birchwood Garden Club on Wed., Sept. 6 from 7-9pm in the Whatcom Museum Rotunda Room (121 Prospect St., Bellingham). This session will get us up to speed on dahlias just in time to visit the Sat. & Sun., Sept. 9-10 Annual Dahlia Show at Bloedel Donovan Park.
