Racing Beds to End Homelessness by Courtney Kendall For Konrad Kocsis, it all started in summer 2016 when a good friend asked him if he’d seen an article on how high child homelessness is in Whatcom County. The numbers were staggering: “He said that one in thirty-two [children] experience homelessness during the school year. That’s too large a number in our backyard,” says Konrad. Paws in the Pumpkin Patch Cat Show –

Bellingham SeaFeast 2018

by Osa Hale Bellingham is a very special place. Nestled between the mountains and the bay, fresh and salt water, trees and driftwood, this small city has so much natural beauty to offer. Locals and frequent visitors know that there is something for every “industry” of the region: agriculture has the NW Washington Fair, outdoor recreation has Ski to Sea, timber has the Deming Log Show, and since 2016, maritime professionals have Bellingham SeaFeast to honor the work they do. The SeaFeast begins on Friday, September 21 with a welcoming ceremony featuring Lummi Nation members, who will canoe to the new Waypoint Park Beach before joining Mayor Kelli Linville and violinist/ storyteller Swil Kanim on the steps of Maritime Heritage Park. The festival will last until 8pm on Saturday, September 22. As the name suggests, the SeaFeast is focused on the bountiful food offered by the ocean and the bay. Do you want to learn how to do it yourself? There are demos on how to fillet a fish, crack a crab, shuck an oyster, and prepare many other types of seafood down in the harbor. If you’re more interested in

partaking in a marine feast made by talented professionals, the SeaFeed at the Harbor is the place to be. Served under a big-top canopy at Zuanich Point Park on both Friday and Saturday, the meal will feature a Dungeness crab feed, locally grilled oysters, and salmon grilled in a traditional fashion by members of the Lummi Nation. Mike McKenzie, SeaFest marketing director, says anyone attending the SeaFeed is in for an amazing experience. “Our little corner of the Northwest can pretty much lay claim to Dungeness crab capital of the West Coast; our salmon hauls and processing are internationallyacclaimed and shipped all over the world, and we have some of the most renowned shellfish farms in the U.S.,” McKenzie writes. “They will have the best seafood experience imaginable.” Another delicious opportunity lies in the exclusive meal known as “Taste the Sea: a Sustainable Seafood Experience.” Sponsored by Haggen, this supper offers dishes from major seafood brands along with wine pairings. Expert chefs explain to participants how the products are sustainable caught, sourced, and served in what is described as a sea-to-plate experience. Though the sumptuous seafood is the centerpiece to the festival, there are plenty of other fun marine-themed activities planned for the weekend. Dock walks and boat visits allow landlubbers to get to know their local fishermen, and even include demos in arts like knot-tying

and net-mending. There will also be an exciting demonstration of a rescue at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. If you’re feeling inspired to get involved and do more than watch the experts, Bellingham SeaFeast hosts a variety of games and competitions. Adventurous festival-goers can take part in Survival Suit Races, the Oyster Shuck & Slurp, Guess-The-Fish, a “Walk the Plank” race, and, of course, the Fish Toss. There will also be several less competitive activities, for participants of all ages. Downtown Bellingham will host performance art at various venues on Friday in the form of sea shanties, poems, storytelling, film, and live music. Just a taste: the Bellingham Chorale will perform at the Bellingham Museum Rotunda; the Pickford Film Center will feature nautical film and video shorts; and Ray Troll and the Ratfish Wranglers will play their raucous tunes at the Sylvia Center for the Arts. When the Whatcom County Farm Tour and the Skagit Festival of Family Farms come around, everyone is invited to taste local foods fresh from the source and take a free peek behind the scenes. As part of the Eat Local First month campaign, The Whatcom County Farm Tour connects farmers and food producers with food enthusiasts looking to see their food being harvested. Expect samples, bargains, and fun, interactive activities for all ages. Sustainable Connections, a local organization invested in improving our community, has assembled a list of local farms and refreshments stops. The Bell family hosted about 250 people last year at their livestock and produce farm in North Bellingham. In addition to the self-guided tour, a few farm-to-table culinary events are planned. Cosmos Bistro will offer a locally inspired brunch from 8-10am on Saturday, September 8. That evening, Boundary Bay is presenting Farm-To-Pint Pairing from 6-9pm. From 2-6pm on Sunday September 9, Samson Estates Winery will be host Wine, Cheese & Chocolate Tasting featuring sweets from Chocolate Necessities as well as some local cheeses from Gothberg Farms, Ferndale Farmstead, and Twin Sisters Creamery.

The Skagit Valley farming community will get their turn in the spotlight October 6 & 7 when the Skagit Festival of Family Farms opens their barns to the growing legions of “agri-tourists.” Oysters, blueberries, apple cider and more will be on display at the twelve participating Skagit farms. The festival has been promoting local food producers for twenty years and uses the tours to strengthen the bond between farmers and the community. Distinctive orange flags mark the entrance to each selected farm. A Welcome Center for the festival will be located inside The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Company at The Outlet Shoppes in Burlington. After picking up a map, people are encouraged to visit the selected farms and see where their food comes from. All tours and parking are free and many of the stops will offer their products for purchase. Various attractions will include kids activities, hay & corn mazes, educational demonstrations and more. Padilla was born in Seoul Korea and studied fashion illustration in Germany. She graduated from WWU while living in Lynden, and continues to paint. Eat Local Month Celebrating our Harvest Together by Justin Hawkinson September was declared Eat Local Month in 2011, and each fall Sustainable Connections coordinates their efforts to promote, introduce, and remind the community of the bountiful local foods harvested nearby. A series of events, contests, signage, and discounts fill the month with culinary adventure and exploration. “We are so lucky that in NW WA we have a bounty of local food available year round,” says Sara Southerland, Food & Farming Director at Sustainable Connections. “Eat Local Month was born as a special time to collectively celebrate farmers, fishermen, chefs, food artisans, and all the talented people who bring that food to our plates. From farm explorations to local dishes served at restaurants around town, September is a special time of harvest and excitement.” The program kicks off on September 2 with The Farm Fund Hootenanny. This party is co-sponsored by Community Food Co-op as a fundraiser for local farms and the programs that support them. Starting at 6pm, the Boundary Bay Beer Garden will be open to all ages for a party that brings together farmers with the people passionate about eating local. Donations to the farm fund ($5-$20) will be accepted at the gate. Boundary Bay will offer food and drink specials for purchase, two bands will play square dance music, and awards will be given to honored farmers. In addition to encouraging consumers to seek out local products, Eat Local Month reaches out to local chefs & restaurants with their Harvest of the Month promotion. 90 Never Looked So Good! by Marla Bronstein The 90th Anniversary season of the Bellingham Theatre Guild (BTG) is in motion. A team of volunteers poured over submitted proposals earlier this year to determine what shows would be presented to audiences during the 2018-2019 season. Audiences will get to enjoy entertaining musicals, experience a bit of sentimentality, and learn a little history. BTG Board President Dee Dee O’Connor says “I’m very excited about this season. It has a little bit for everyone, including a great family show for the holidays. I’m also very proud that there are several plays with strong roles for women.”

Opening the season is La Cage aux Folles, book by Harvey Fierstein, and music & lyrics by Jerry Herman. Auditions were held in the heat of July, and rehearsals are well underway. Experienced directors producing for the first-time at BTG are Zoe Bronstein and Kathy Peacock Duncan. They are well up to the task, having both been weaned in the glow of the stage. T.J. Anderson provides the musical direction, and Emma Delaney and Kat Ruhl share the role of choreographer. Based on the play of the same name (which also inspired the movie The Birdcage), La Cage boasts classic big Broadway sound with a heartfelt message about family and acceptance. The show runs September 7-23. If you are so moved by the excitement of the season opener, you should consider auditioning for the holiday show SHIPWRECKED: An Entertainment; The Amazing Adventures of Louis De Rougemont (As Told By Himself.) Written by Donald Margulies and directed by Les Campbell, this show runs from November 23 through December 9. SHIPWRECKED examines how far we’re willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world. Auditions are September 16 and 17. The winter slot will showcase Almost, Maine by John Cariani, which will be directed by Teri Grimes and performed from February 1-17, 2019. This play tells the story of one cold, clear, winter night, when the residents of Almost, Maine find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. You can beat the mid-winter blues by auditioning for this show on December 2 or 3.

The spring show, Silent Sky runs from March 29 through April 14, 2019. It was written by Lauren Gunderson (author of 2017’s I and You) and will be directed by Shawn Fuller. This is the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt as she explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed, until men claimed credit for them. Auditions will be held February 10 and 11. Closing the season is Nunsense, written by Dan Goggin, directed by Michelle Kriz; it will run June 14-30, 2019. Nunsense is the show that started the franchise, and it comes to BTG for the first time. The story begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. If you are interested in being in this musical, auditions will be held April 7 and 8, 2019. Special this season is the return of the Bellinghamster One-Act Theatre (BOAT) Festival, slotted for January 14 through 26, 2019. A disclaimer: I worked for The Bellingham Herald for 27 years, mostly as arts and entertainment coordinator for the weekly Take Five tabloid, but also as a writer for Prime Time, Bellingham Families, and other sections of the paper. Martha Benedict, Martin Bray, Akilah Williams, Amanda Carpp, and Paul Henderson sing and dance in this ode to the press at 7:30pm, Oct. 4-6, and 3pm, Oct. 6 at the Firehouse Performing Arts and Event Center (1314 Harris Ave., Bellingham) in this production for Bellingham Music Club. The Herald plays the starring role, says Henderson. “The curtain rises on Monday morning, with people starting their day with the newspaper. Benedict seeks advice from the horoscopes before singing a duet with her Ouija board in “Talking to You” from High Spirits.
