Melanie Garbutt has a passion – it’s floristry of course. So when she opened her own flower shop twelve years ago in Upton, near Pontefract, it was only fitting that the business was called Passion Flowers, because the passion has remained and even after twenty years as a florist she is still having a love affair with flowers.

Lilies are the most traditional Easter flowers and although sales for florists have diminished over the years there is still a place to show skill and artistry with stylish church pedestal designs that amateurs cannot do. Generally no flowers are permitted in church until after Good Friday, gold and white are the ecclesiastical Easter colourings and the traditional Arum Lilies and Longiflorum Lilies are the most popular Lilies used. Life is easy for the florist with the OASIS® Pedestal Block as there is no fiddling about cutting floral foam; the block is designed especially for large arrangements. Follow our step-by-step instructions to make a stunning pedestal design.

Melanie started on a youth training scheme (YTS) in a local flower shop straight from school, and learnt her craft both at the workbench and at a local college.

HOW TO:

Melanie prefers to have a small shop where she takes time to listen to her customers’ needs, giving individual attention, and then weaves creative stories with her flowers to complement the occasion. More than anything else Melanie feels most at home in her shop where she says, “I love the cut and thrust of a flower shop, thinking on your feet, and adapting styles to what the customer wants.”

Step 1 - To aid longer life for the flowers soak the floral foam in a solution of water and OASIS® Floralife® Flower Food. Tape together the floral foam and bowl for security, bringing the Anchor Tape under the bowl and back up to secure onto itself.

Step 2 - Use the full depth of the floral foam by placing the tallest flowers to the back. Cut the ends of the Mitsumata Branches to a point for easy insertion and add them to the back of the floral foam. Molucella and Gladioli are grouped around the Mitsumata Branches with Midelino Sticks looped to form curved side placements.

Then use Aspidistra and Palm at the base of the floral foam to give a good outline shape.

Melanie calls herself a ‘down to earth’ basic florist, yet only the most creative florists win the awards and prizes that she has won in floristry competitions. Her most recent success was a Gold Medal and Best in Show at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and over the years she has won Best in Show and first prize in the wedding design class at Harrogate Flower Show many times.

The day before the fresh photo shoot Melanie had been invited to a luncheon by the High Sherriff of West Yorkshire in recognition of outstanding success in her career. Melanie’s creative force takes her way, way beyond basic and into the realms of a super designer florist.

Step 3 - Place open Lily heads in the centre of the floral foam to create a focal area, using the buds around the outline. Make sure all stems are firmly pushed into the floral foam. Recess Anastasia blooms between the Lilies and fill in with Finland Moss to cover the floral foam. Add green and white Midelino Sticks to give swirling movement to the front of the design. Top up the bowl with water once in situ.

Step 1 Soak the OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam in a solution of water and OASIS® Floralife® Flower Food. Make a decorative wire garland around the four lower candleholders by curling silver Aluminium Wire. Make two longer hanging Aluminium Wire garlands at opposite sides of the Candelabra.

Step 2 Twirl apple green Flat Aluminium Wire down the main candlestick in an attractive style.

Secure the Glass Test Tubes firmly with Bullion Wire and weave Bear Grass through the Aluminium Wire garland. Use OASIS® Fix Adhesive Tack to secure the Candle Cup to the central candleholder and anchor the floral foam in place with Pot Tape.

Step 3 Add a delicate collar of Coral Fern and then insert Phalaenopsis Orchids into the floral foam in a pleasing pattern. Fill in with more Coral Fern and Amaranthus. Fill the Glass Test Tubes with water and then add the Viburnum and Phalaenopsis Orchids to them. Swirl Callas around the design inserting the stems into the floral foam or water filled Glass Test Tubes, secure the heads in place with Bullion Wire.

Finally add four Church Candles into the candleholders.

fresh designer tips • Slit the Lilies open and remove the stamens.

Build up layers of Lily petals around the central Rose. Tape Parafilm around the base of each of the opened out Lily petals as they are placed around the Rose, then pull the Parafilm tighter a second time to stop the Lily breaking and to hold it firmly in place.

• Tape down over the ends of the Lily petals to keep the moisture in.

• As the Lily petals build up it may be necessary to glue in place.

fresh designer tips • To make the waistcoat with hot glue - make a dense pattern with glue onto a piece of water sprayed polythene.
