Of all the peak periods in a flower shop Christmas must be the easiest. Corporate customers generally want their Christmas decorations the beginning of December, and home decoration starts in mid December, so it’s a whole month of sales rather than everything compacted into a few days. Real delights in this issue of fresh are Daniel Santamaria’s Christmas arrangements all intended to give you inspiration and entice your customers to buy more this festive season.

Check out the dates at www.fandwb.com This issue of fresh features arrangements by Spanish designer Daniel Santamaria. ‘Born to be a florist,’ this is Daniel Santamaria’s description of himself, for even before leaving school Daniel’s obsession was for all things floral. Starting his working life as a florist in his home city of Barcelona, Spain, he continued his education in Germany, working for a year with Gregor Lersch and then in a Hamburg florists shop. In 2004 he opened Floristik Projekt in Schönningstedt, Germany with his wife Britta Ohlrogge, here the studio is a hive of creative production where up town classics and contemporary styling go hand in hand. Twice a year at Christmas and at Easter, Daniel transforms his shop with a complete makeover, creating different and defining moods to suit the season, then he holds open-house events and the customers flock in. Displays of mix and match designs in a variety of sizes and levels of artistry mean customers can decorate the whole house with themed

arrangements at different price points, like the planted designs on pages 6 and 7. This means there is a great choice, a design for every consumer no matter what his or her financial restraints. No stranger to competitions Daniel has won the Catalan Cup, the Spanish Cup and came second in the Europa Cup held in Salamanca, Spain in 2003. His expert knowledge, creativity and sunny personality ensure he is a popular international demonstrator and tutor working in over twenty-three countries. Daniel says, ‘My interest is the history of architecture and art and this influences my style of work which is ever evolving.’ Daniel likes to mix styles so often weaves contemporary elements into iconic classics and with the huge range of OASIS® Floral Products to choose from his Christmas designs for fresh are a real treat. Add well-conditioned Conifer and evergreens in random patterns throughout the length of the Garland. Remove any pine needles from the base of the Conifer stems for secure insertion into the floral foam. To support the Garland make a tapering cane structure as tall as the Garland by firmly binding four tall canes at equal distances together with three cross supports. Place the cane support into a heavy Large Tall Glass Cube and fill with chippings or stones for additional weight and security. The Garland will sit safely between the pronged cross supports. Add groups of Phalaenopsis Orchids and Lotus Heads then finish by gluing in place dried materials or baubles if desired. 9

• Cut a slither of floral foam from the base of each half sphere so that they sit without rocking. • When using fresh materials wrap the OASIS® Ideal Floral Foam Sphere bowls with a plastic covering for protection before encasing with wool, and then wet, but do not over soak, the floral foam.

HOW TO: Step 1 Take a few Cinnamon Sticks (3 to 5 depending on their diameter) and using two colours of Metallic Wire bind the Cinnamon Sticks together in the centre making a decorative band.

Step 2 Attach the Cinnamon Sticks to the plastic plate on the Wrap Wristlet with hot glue and then glue two pieces of Conifer to the top. Glue together a star and Ivy leaf then top with a small Phalaenopsis head. Glue these in place over the Conifer. Step 3 Finish off with a length of wool or ribbon. Bind the ends of the wool with Metallic Wire. In the centre of the length of wool push a Round Headed Pearl Pin, to secure, glue to the Cinnamon Sticks. Thread the napkins through the Wrap Wristlet on arrival at the venue. NOTE Use Glue Guns with care as hot glue can burn. 15
