ENRICO ARGENTIERI architect Enrico Argentieri [Brindisi, 1991] holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Polytechnic of Bari, Italy (2018). His graduation thesis titled, Nuove Forme dell’Abitare (”New Housing Models”) was developed under the supervision of Professor, Architect Francesco Defilippis and Professor, Architect Martino Tattara from Dogma Studio (Bruxelles, Belgium). In 2015 he received a EU Erasmus+ scholarship and studied for 10 months at Istituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal). Enrico’s Academic works were exposed in 2016 and 2017 at the “BDA_Bari Disegno Architetture, Urban Survey series” and “Architettura fortificata. Rilievo e restauro”. In 2015, his Architectural Design Studio IV project was presented in Bari by Professor, Architect Carlo Moccia, at “L’Università nella Città Metropolitana: La Città della Conoscenza” for the foundation of a University Campus in the metropolitan area of Bari. In 2019, his thesis was presented by Professor, Architect Francesco Defilippis during the 1st International Urban Design Summer School ‘Over De Ring’ (Antwerp & Bruxelles, Belgium) in collaboration between Polytechnic of Bari, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and RheinischWestfaelische Technische Hochschule Aachen. In September 2018 he passed the Architecture qualifying examination (Polytechnic of Bari commission) and is registered as Architect nº645 in the Order of Architects of Brindisi, Puglia (Italy). Since March 2019 he collaborates with Atelier Machado Costa Arq. Ass. (Lisbon, Portugal).

Introduction This portfolio is a collection of several projects developed during the Portuguese experience at Machado Costa Arq. Ass. in Lisbon. The majority of the works consists of residential, hospitality, educational and cultural buildings. The most audacious and advanced of these projects is the ClubMed in Grândola, which was carried out until the execution phase. This project was followed soon after by the Carve Hotel in Vargens. The last four projects of the Ordem dos Arquitectos, the New Class Center for the “Faculdade de Letras” in Lisbon, the Cultural Center in Loures and the Student House “Gunpowder Factory” in Oeiras, rapresent different architectural typologies that respond to the urban condition seeking to solve - in every case - various needs. The projects are presented in a chronological order.

Ordem dos Arquitectos

Exhibition gallery, training and meeting rooms, coffeehouse Client | Ordem dos Arquitectos Position | Lisbon, Portugal Project | 2019 - 2020 Intervention area | 338 m² Construction area | 297 m² Project cost | 497.640,00€

“Lisboa precisa da força da arquitectura, da afirmação de gestos fortes. Onde senão ao edifício dos Arquitectos se irá buscar esse ânimo, essa convicção, esse desprendido parecer?”1 With those words – voluntarily not translated – ended the Memory of Manuel Graças Dias and Egas José Vieira on the 1991 project for the Ordem dos Arquitectos (OdA). Our project aims to rebuild that “Architectural Force” that is missed in that part of the old building of the OdA. The project achieves the functional request to build a common area on the ground floor plan with a bar and an internal patio and two rooms for educational purpose - those directly linked with the old existing building. On the first and second floor there is the noble space of the multipurpose hall characterized by an irregular shape and lighted up by the Northern light. But the most important aspect of the project is its relationship with the city and with the corner of the Dom Luís garden. The urbanistic relevance of the shape is expressed in the powerful corner and in the drawing of the facade, closed to the streets and opened behind, looking directly on the Banhos de São Paulo building.

Carve Hotel

Hotel complex with spa, restaurant and public spaces Client | Private Investors Position | Benavente, Portugal Project | 2020 - ... Intervention area | 62.350 m² Construction area | 17.204 m² Project cost | 32.770.144,00€

The Carve Hotel in Benavente is based on a archetype abbey model. The main necessity from an architectural point of view was to build a form that could stand on by itself because of the absence of other references around. The hotel is built around two large courts that host the rooms, with a central smaller court that is the core of the building where administration, reception and staff facilities are located. This last section develops into the restaurant and the bar organized across two levels. The basement hosts technical areas, kitchens and laundries. The rooms are drawn around a single typology that is repeted across the hotel, except in the corners where the suites are located. Finally, the hotel is completed with the remaining areas of the congresse center and the spa that are located on the empty side of the courts, meanwhile a bio-pool on the West side close the composition near the river edge.

Nagy’s House

A rural house on the Atlantic Coast Client | Private Position | Melides, Grândola (PT) Project | 2020 - ... Intervention area | 643 m² Construction area | 245 m² Project cost | 335.143,00€

The house for the Nagy family had to meet two different needs. On the hand to be a comfortable family holiday house in a rural countryside near the Oceanic coast. On the other hand to include dedidcated spaces that could be rented out to tourists. The property is divided in two by the entrance hall. In the southern section there’s the family house; in the northern part there are two guest rooms. The main theme of the project is the inverted roof that rules the importance of the spaces below him, and so, the living room – being the most importante space for the family - has more heigth and dominate the external spaces with the terrace and the swimming pool. We managed to root the project in the territory and avoided to simply draw an object. The result was a sense of comfort to the whole building without being invasive.

“FLUL” New Class Center

New lecture hall and public spaces for the Faculty of Literature Client | University of Lisbon Position | Lisbon, Portugal Project | 2020 Intervention area | 10.942 m² Construction area | 4.470 m² Project cost | 4.827.900,00€

The project aims to demolish and replace one of the existing University building. The old construction is a small, one-story patio that was built after the end of the dictatorship in Portugal. The building was developed very fast by using pre-construction techniques in line with the “New State” style. Our intention for the new pavilion was to draw a connection with the historical building of the University. We did so in two different ways: by introducing drawings on the facades that tries to give a sense of urbanism to the external common spaces and builds a relationship with the old building; and by connecting different levels to allow students to easily reach the new pavilion. Developed on two stories, on the ground floor we located the students rooms, while the administrative desks and the professors’ offices were placed on the first floor.

Total Theater

Cultural center, auditorium and coffeehouse Client | Municipality of Loures Position | Loures, Portugal Project | 2021 Intervention area | 14.968 m² Construction area | 11.331 m² Project cost | 9.862.500,00€

The Loures Cultural Center project was developed for a 2021 international competition The project seeks a dialogue with various architectural themes, from the shape of a theater to the difficulty of the urban scene, a problem that derives from the disordered and unclear morphology of the neighborhood in which the project takes place. The first step was to choose the shape of the general plan to include the theater, a coffeehouse, recording studios and various offices. Moreover we defined the relationship between this shape and the city. Our idea was to draw a building that promotes the neighborhood: an entrance square at the height of the main street that connects the auditorium and the coffeehouse with the underlying garden as an urban limit. The massive construction that hosts the auditorium is the most audacious part of the project. It was inspired by the lesson of the unbuilt Walter Gropius’s Total Theater in Volksbühne in 1927 where the main stage is designed to cater different purposes including theatrical shows, concerts and events of different nature. The project ranked 7th out of 57 projects submitted.

Student House “Gunpowder Factory” University Residence, reading room and canteen Client | Municipality of Oeiras Position | Oeiras, Portugal Project | 2021 Intervention area | 2.246 m² Construction area | 1.623 m² Project cost | 1.940.545,50€

2º Classified in International Competition

Located just outside the metropolitan area of Lisbon, in Oeiras, the old gunpowder factory is occupied today by various institutions such as museums, research centers and universities. The project - which will be used by the Atlantica University - required the conversion of three old buildings into apartments, and the creation of a new building that will have to be installed in a lot characterized by an irregular shape due to the stream that flows a few meters from the existing buildings. The program of the extension required the creation of thirty dormitory units, a canteen and a study room. The most difficult design challenge was the volumetric resolution in positioning the new volume within the given limits. It was decided to divide the new project into three distinct parts: - I - a narrow and long three story branch used for rooms, - II - a two story block positioned at the entrance to the lot that hosts kitchen and services on the ground floor with study room on the upper floor, and - III - a very low volume that connects those three parts all together and hosts hall and canteen. Particular attention was paid to the design of the rooms which developed the module on which the design of the whole is based.
