ADDICT® X BEI BADGIRL Sydney-based artist Bei Badgirl is a self proclaimed ‘Bad Bitch’, who enjoys drinking Diet Coke, watching cartoons, and luring sailors to their doom. Inspired by all that glitters, her ultra-girly work explores the notions of sex and excess, obsession, indulgence, and the concept of falling in love with imaginary things. Bei first exhibited at the Australia MTV Gallery as part of the “Kids Today” exhibition. Since then, her work has shown in galleries all over the world including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, and Tokyo, and she’s collaborated with high profile clients and brands such as EMI Music, Hello Kitty and Red Bull to name but a few.

ADDICT速 X NUMSKULL Numskull is an Australian based contemporary artist, working out of Sydney in a variety of fields and mediums including painting, sculpture, illustration and large scale murals. Over the past 15 years, Numskull has been leaving his mark, creating public work wherever he travels. During the early part of his career, his education came from Graffiti and Street Art and he continues to practice in and out of these rebellious fields, whilst also focussing his energy on traditional gallery work. Having grown up in the sleepy Northern suburbs of Sydney, everything Numskull uses in his practice is self taught.

Now showing constantly in galleries, his painting style has evolved from simple street work to complex, technical and reactive mixed media paintings and sculpture. His compositions contain cartoon-like forms, crammed on top of each other until they create a screaming mass of energy. ADDICT® X ECB Hendrik Beikirch belongs to the generation of those who look for new approaches. His preoccupation with the large-format portrait form an important, long-time work series. Random encounters and conversations provide the content for these mirror-of-the-soul images, translating personal history and sketching their expression on the canvas. Who are the faces? “These are no one specific, and therefore, just recognizable. ADDICT® X SIMKINS Greg Simkins was born in 1975 in Torrance California, just south of Los Angeles. He grew up with a menagerie of animals including a number of rabbits, which often emerge in his paintings. He began drawing at the early age of three and was inspired by various cartoons and books like Watership Down, The Chronicles of Narnia and The Phantom Tollbooth.

Simkins has been featured in numerous group exhibitions and sold out solo exhibitions around the globe. His art is seen in a wide variety of industries from clothing to video games and vinyl toys. His client/collaboration list includes Activision, Disney, Mattel, Upper Playground, Juxtapoz, Vans, Converse, Ningyoushi and Kid Robot to name a few.

Simkins’ art continued to progress to the age of 18, when he started doing graffiti under the name “CRAOLA”. Graffiti art became his impetus for creating and gave him the confidence to paint large works.

It is his careful weaving of pop culture, the old masters, nature, carnival kitsch, and (most importantly) his warped imagination, that makes Greg Simkins a much sought-after surrealist painter today.

Marvel X Addict Artist Series Two features three exclusive new designs from Japanese artist Tadaomi Shibuya. Presenting Daredevil, Dr.Doom and Silver Surfer, the series sees the trio brought right up to date by Shibuya’s unique and distinctive ‘geometric sci-fi’ polygon style… Drawing upon a diverse range of influences including a childhood spent growing up in Yokohama and a lifelong devotion to comic books, Shibuya has crafted a series that breathes new life into each character whilst capturing their true essence.

MARVEL X SHIBUYA Born in Yokohama, Tadaomi Shibuya has a background in Product Design, gained from Tama Art University, Tokyo. Shibuya’s striking paintings, drawings, graphics and animations have been used across many industries including clothing lines, product design, advertising, music videos, editorial illustration and interior design. Citing influences such as Hip Hop culture, graffiti and classic Anime and Manga animations, featuring super robots, Shibuya has evolved a style with a distinctly urban, sci-fi, mechanical feel. Rendered with straight interwoven lines, that cascade across the surface, his subjects are transformed to resemble computer circuitry or components of a engine.

From tigers to stag beetles, perfect symmetry is found in Shibuya’s many animal graphics and portraits. His purely abstract works explore the raw elements of his forms where the imagination attempts to navigate indecipherable mazes and non landscapes, while a poetic fusion between technology and nature informs the content of his more figurative works. SHIBUYA INTERVIEW Words: Jay Hamdaoui

You have a very distinct geometric stye, why do you think your work has evolved in this way?

You studied Product Design at University, how has this affected your style?

I used to draw type, architecture and figures and one day, I came up with an idea to reconstruct the different elements to make one image, then I started to work in this style. Also I think this could be an influence from Hip Hop and Breakbeat music which continually inspire me and the nature of my work.

I studied how machines work in terms of their technical parts and how they fit together, this has definitley influenced how I treat the different shapes in my compositions, they certainly have a ‘technical’ feel about them.

Tell us about your background, what was it like growing up in Japan and how has this influenced your work? Being surrounded by a lot of technology and Sci Fi characters I used to draw robots a lot when I was a small child. I still have a plastic model of a Gundam from my childhood and it’s still my favourite. It was this kind of input that continues to affect how I work. What other artists inspire you? DJ Premier and DJ Krush.

Have you always been a comic book fan, who were your favourite characters? Growing up I was always interested in comics, particularly the art and how different illustrators interpreted the characters. I think my favourites were always Dr. Doom and Iron Man, probably because they looked like machines. Who have been your favourite clients to work for? I’ve been lucky to work with a diverse range of clients so hard to narrow it down, but I always enjoy working for Nike, Givenchy, Time Magazine and Toyota.

How did it feel re-working these legendary characters, and what did you want to achieve? It was a huge honour and very exciting, so I wanted to get it absolutely right. My primary aim was to achieve balance throughout the series, they had to work as a set aswell as individually, and on that basis I think it turned out pretty well. Did you have a clear vision of how the characters would end up looking? I knew I wanted to capture the essence of each character which means visually describing their very different attributes. For example Daredevil had to be very dynamic, whereas Dr. Doom had to look imposing and evil, and Silver Surfer needed to appear noble and ‘other worldly’. This requires a different approach for each character, so I always find a way as the process develops, rather than having strict guidelines before I start. I find that way of working quite restrictive so I’d rather let it unfold organically and see where I end up, too any preconceptions can stifle an idea.

Talk us through your process, how do you begin? It’s always different depending on the project, I try and start by asking myself how to realise the final piece in an engaging way that provides a different perspective for the viewer, and to treat the subject matter in a way they perhaps don’t expect. This can involve looking at what has gone before and asking myself how I can add something different. What projects are you working on at the moment? Currently I’m doing some stuff for MLB, that’s the governing body of Major League Baseball. I can’t say too much about it at the moment but it’s very exciting, stay tuned for the resuts coming soon... Finally, how would you sum up working on this project with Addict Clothing? Streetwear is a passion of mine so to have worked on this project with Addict has been pretty special. I hope to do it again soon! SHIBUYA
