Barsa Taberna Barsa Taberna Spanish tapas restaurant captures the energy of the running of the bulls Multi-disciplinary studio +tongtong. The mostly-subterranean space evokes the intimacy and vibrancy of Barcelona, where tapas restaurants emerge from the most unexpected places. Both the client and the designer John Tong have spent a considerable amount of time in Gaudí’s city, and shared the excitement of capturing that energy in the creation of Barsa. “In Spain, there’s this way of making things work no matter the conditions,” Tong says. “For instance, you might have to walk under stairs and pass a press kitchen to get to the dining room, the kitchen is half the size it should be, and the washrooms might be located down an alley. However, these seemingly difficult site conditions really contribute to the authentic feel of a tapas bar.” Fittingly, the original site had its own challenges. Located in a historical building across from the world-famous St. Lawrence Market, the 3,000-square-foot site was dingy with low ceilings, and was so dark the only way to explore the space was by flashlight. In fact, part of the space is under the sidewalk. And because of the site’s historical status, Tong and his team had numerous restrictions to work around – the windows, mason stone walls, and main door all had to remain untouched. Designing within these parameters, +tongtong transformed the derelict space by injecting animation while maintaining the site’s historical integrity. The result is a sleek, edgy interior that balances freeform expression and modernist architectural language. To capture the essence of Barcelona’s tapas culture, where patrons can often pick their own tapas straight from the kitchen, the prep area was moved forward and outwards. Chefs prepare charcuterie and cheese platters out in the open, surrounded by jars of produce, hanging chili peppers, cast iron pans, and meat slicers. The bar area is defined by a swirling, vibrant blue graphic floor pattern, a design that was extrapolated from the Gaudí-influenced tile in the main dining room. A computer-generated adhesive stencil was laid down on the new concrete floors, and then coated with epoxy paint. The design runs up the sides of the kitchen walls and the bar, which integrates a blown-up version of the same pattern. Enclosing the two-tone Corian bar, which eventually becomes two-sided, are custom-designed stools made of salvaged, old-growth pine with an oblique powdered

coated steel frame. Dubbed the “little pest,” or in Spanish “bicho mio” the stool has three variations, all of which look different depending on their orientation. With tops resembling worn butcher blocks and carved-out handles that riff on the forms of old wine crates, the stools are a nod to the ingenuity featured in traditional tapas eateries, where seats are fashioned out of old wine barrels, wooden crates, or whatever is available. They appear especially unruly when positioned across the room from the straight and proper red chairs. Above the bar, three custom-designed LED light fixtures hang. With a motif of bullhorns, the armatures resemble a charging bull caught under a strobe light, frozen in a stop motion sequence. On the other side of the bar area, the red chairs encase custom-designed tables that feature a laminate top with a wooden edge. Above the banquet seating is a glass wall made of 1,500 coloured wine bottles, all painstakingly hand-cut by the client’s friends, and inspired by the floor tile’s natural forms. Old stone archways differ-

entiate the grotto-style dining area, a very tight, dark and windowless space with low ceilings and wooden beams. To conserve the limited space, +tongtong knew they needed to integrate a light source into the project spatially. The main light source is a rear-lit mural, a collaboration between local graffiti artist Pascal Paquette and Tong. And like the armatures above the bar, the running of the bulls is the central theme. “Bulls are massive, bulky and when they’re charging through, it’s chaos and threatening. It’s like a hurricane.” Tong says. “We art directed with Pascal to create something that represented that cultural ritual.” The mural transforms the space into a bright and energetic room. The tile running throughout the space is purposefully laid to draw attention to the nonlinear nature of the space. The mason wall that separates the bar area from the rear dining room is in fact angled, “a kind of character you find in a lot of older, medieval cities in Europe,” Tong explains. “We wanted to accentuate that by installing the tile off-square from the main space.”

Meanwhile, the tile pattern itself is a modern take on traditional patterns from the art nouveau and gothic periods. In the warmer months, a large, 75-seat patio runs the whole length of the restaurant. As part of the Market Street revitalization, a project that restored designated heritage buildings and reanimated the neglected street, Barsa’s patio will act as an anchor in the rejuvenated thoroughfare. John Tong (Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Toronto, 1992) is the founding principal and creative director of +tongtong. The firm has recently completed the Drake Devonshire Inn in Prince Edward County (Tong was also lead designer for the Drake Hotel in Toronto) just two hours from Toronto. Ongoing projects include commercial and custom residential projects across Canada and the United States. +tongtong recently completed the design of Her Majesty’s Pleasure, a King Street café/bar, bistro, boutique store and beauty salon; as well as the boutique stores Black Toe Running and Annie Aime, all located in downtown Toronto. 

figure3 Samsung HQ

Global electronics leader Samsung sought out figure3, one of Canada’s largest design firms, to create a workplace that brought their high speed and high tech brand to life. Known for their research-driven design process, figure3 was charged with translating Samsung’s innovative global culture into the Canadian HQ. From inspired environmental branding to adaptive use of cutting edge Samsung technology, the new HQ communicates the Samsung brand story, while seamlessly supporting the needs of this global technology leader. Figure3’s design connects Samsung’s people to the parent brand, while celebrating the diverse people, services and capabilities that make Samsung such an innovative and imaginative global brand. Looking at Samsung’s workplace as a global community committed to creating superior products and services, figure3 came up with a zonal strategy. By creating themes that reflect Samsung’s core values for each floor (people, co-prosperity, excellence and integrity), new and exciting ways for employees and visitors to discover, interact and engage are encouraged. The three zones (Global, Local and Personal), bring Samsung’s innovative

culture to life by creating collaborative conferencing and meeting spaces, using technology to promote levels of engagement for all users, reinforcing Samsung’s commitment to sustainability as well as providing employees with an inspirational work environment to support Samsung’s core values. Global The Reception Area, Waiting Area, and Elevator lobbies are dubbed “Global” areas, where guests & employees are invited to experience the unexpected. Through technology, product display, environmental graphics and material application, guests are invited into the world of Samsung. Local Open collaborative areas, including the lunch room, meeting rooms, touch downs and coffee areas are the “Local” zones. These zones create the infectious energy and dynamism felt throughout the entire workspace. Samsung products and technology, including home appliances, screens, smart boards, copiers and tablets are integrated to help share information and celebrate

Samsung products and commitment to constant innovation. Personal Workstations and private offices are designed to allow people to focus on creativity and innovation. Every single workstation is sit/stand, while translucent office glass maximizes the “right to light” philosophy – promoting wellness, transparency and information share. To figure3 principal Eric Yorath, “The new HQ takes the Samsung philosophy of innovation and excitement and translates it into the physical workplace – supporting people as individuals and as a community of thinkers and doers creating superior products and services every single day.” Yorath adds, “With the completion of the Experience Gallery this May, visitors will be invited into the world of Samsung. An interactive, engaging and immersive setting, the Experience Gallery harnesses the power of technology and imagination to bring Samsung’s products to life.” Samsung technology provides individuals with the functional tools to do their job, including: laptops, monitors, smart phones and accessories. 

Rubber Flooring that will not Change Colour, Guarenteed. Created for Centura by American Biltrite

As design teams push the envelope on interior design, the increased demands on flooring to be more than just a surface we walk on are also escalating; in fact, flooring has become an integral part of the building’s character. With intricate themed designs, way-finding and colours are items that figure prominently in the selection process. It is these requirements that have pushed rubber flooring manufacturers to step up their game and offer a myriad of patterns, colours and profiles. For many years rubber flooring has been used in areas where high traffic access and durability have been paramount. The fundamental logic in choosing rubber flooring is to address these main concerns: • Safety • Comfort • Hygiene • Sound reduction • High abrasion resistance • Low emissions of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) • Dimensional stability • Broad spectrum of stain resistance • Durability • Low maintenance The result is a flooring product ideal for healthcare and educational facilities. Most rubber flooring is based on a rubber polymer called Styrene Butadiene Rubber or (SBR). However, for all these great features that SBR offers it does not meet today’s requirements for: 1. clean true colour saturation and 2. colorfastness. 1. In the past rubber was used in service areas where colour was not a deciding factor or of much concern with black, gray, dark blue and brown being the main colour selections. However, over the past twenty years or so manufactures have offered lighter and more subtle colour palettes to gain greater acceptance and meet designer’s needs. Unfortunately many of the colours offered today exhibit either a bluish or yellowish cast; a characteristic of SBR that does not represent true clean colours.

2. For many years it’s been commonly know that SBR rubber will change colour and fade over time, this change can be slight in medium to dark colours or dramatic in the lighter shades depending on the amount of ultra violet (UV) light it is subjected too, see photograph for example. The standard for colorfastness is ASTM F 1515 - Standard test method for measuring light stability of resilient flooring by colour change. This standard determines the light stability and colorfastness of resilient flooring products when exposed to Xenon light over a set period of time, 300 hours. In 2009 American Biltrite set out to change the way we see colour in rubber flooring. Our goal was to bring pure, clean true colours to the market that are in keeping with today’s designs trends and that will not change, yellow or fade over time. In 2012 American Biltrite introduced AB Pure™, a revolutionary patented, none SBR formulation with far superior colorfastness; this means that colours will not fade under light compared with traditional SBR rubber formulas. As a result, AB PURE is the only rubber flooring that can pass the ASTM F 1515 for colorfastness. To further augment the AB PURE position in the market, “American Biltrite warranties that AB PURE™ will meet the ASTM F 1515 specification for a period of ten (10) years.” This warranty is not only available for all future shipments but also on all AB PURE™ products currently installed in the market. AB Pure now sets the standard for colour within the rubber flooring industry even further and is the only rubber flooring line to carry this warranty fully supporting one of the primary features of the AB PURE compound – clarity and longevity of colour allowing design teams to explore colour and function without limits. 

Frame Created for Centura by Refin

2

DesignTaleStudio, Refin’s ceramics experimental laboratory, continues its prestigious collaborations with leading names in design, presenting FRAME, the new collection developed together with famous graphic design agency Studio FM Milano. In the FRAME collection, the graphic language exploits the most modern ceramics technologies, expressing itself through powerful decorative surfaces inspired by the matter, subjects and suggestions of tradition and interpreting the evolution of the ceramic floor concept in a contemporary key. FRAME does not represent a

return to the past, but a step towards the future that changes without forgetting its roots, stating once again the unbreakable bonds between culture, innovation and creativity that has always fuelled DesignTaleStudio’s work. The collection offers a new interpretation of flooring design for commercial spaces as well as private homes, holding the added value of an avant-garde vision towards research and innovation. Graphic decoration, once a central element of ceramic products, has in the past decades seen an unstoppable decline, leading to the almost total abandonment of the culture of flooring decoration. The communication function of decoration has thus moved in step with a monochrome vision of large surfaces, renouncing its own ability to create a dialogue with spaces and people, to the advantage of the furnishing items. FRAME reverses this model by breaking the consolidated taboo in which flooring is incapable of taking on graphic decoration. A reversal made even clearer by the industrial process it is based on, using mass production as a tool for product accessibility, in the true original spirit of industrial design. The FRAME project bases its artistic identity on a vision of research and reinterpretation of the decorating vocation that has always characterised the Sassuolo area, focusing its objectives on contemporaneity and the will to design a product that is able to represent the future. Studio FM Milano was therefore interested in Refin’s proposal to interpret decorated ceramics with a project that looks to the tradition without falling into the trap of historical falsity or banal citation. The application of two-dimensional design, the prerogative of graphics, to the three-dimensional object, allowed the graphic designers to relate to design aspects and innovative technology, producing a visually dynamic result composed of variants of the same subject that can be matched in a unique, sophisticated patchwork effect: a concept of different modularity involving the random combination of different subjects. The FRAME collection is therefore marked by new keys of interpretation, including the fragmentation of the pattern and the change in scale of the decoration; it proposes textures that become creative instruments for the architect and designer and enhance and innovate both residential and commercial settings. The Studio worked on the four design themes that make up the product families: Geometric, Majolica, Carpet and Weave. In the research phase, a preliminary analysis was carried out into the traditional decorations of 19th and 20th century Majolica and marble-chip tiles, later broadened to the various environments of the best decorating schools, from Bauhaus to Giò Ponti, from ancient azulejos to the shibori textile traditional. And in these hints, each very different and distant from each other, lies the inspiration for the new FRAME collection, which through the decorative value of elaborate textures has successfully reinstated all the communicative power of design. 

Tribeca Created for Centura by Ceramica Rondine

The new collection set to enhance the Brick Generation project pays homage to one of the liveliest, most exclusive neighbourhoods in the Big Apple: Tribeca. The redevelopment of this area in Manhattan began around the 1970s, when an authentic artistic and cultural renaissance made its way through the buildings of this largely financial district. Today Tribeca is very much an “in” residential area, given a genuine air thanks to the cobbled streets

and industrial-style loft apartments. The facades are the same ones you’ll find on the new collection by Ceramica Rondine. The Tribeca ceramic tiles feature the colours and surfaces typical of painted brick. These tiles, available in a wide range of colours - sand, white, old red, mud, multicolor and grey – are the perfect partner for Amarcord, the Ceramica Rondine solution that combines the beauty of cotto with the allure of wood. 

Ardoise Created for Centura by Rex

Unusual, striking combinations, layers of life-experience – both old and modern – and precious elements cohabiting perfectly with recycled items, create an atmosphere that tells a very definite story: a contrasting duality clearly expressing specific identities. The character of the Ardoise range is contained in a precise aesthetic statement: to give meaning to the environment by hiding the design, so that it is perceived simply in terms of the emotions.

The colours and the various sizes are clear, communicative elements that help to rediscover an emotional dimension and enhance the importance and the value of any architecture. Delicate colours bring to mind a strong sense of freedom, air, light and open spaces, receptive to the creativity of living in places and cultures that are continually changing. 

Reserva Created for Centura by Portobello

Deep research on wood species made Portobello create a beautiful collection derived from a wide variety of origins. Diving into this collection made beautiful blends emerge by mixing older pieces and more recent arrivals. In one of these moments, whereas, unexpectedly, a creative impulse emerges and it takes shape and it is transformed into a new design the Reserva collection was created. Types of wood were organized into chromatic groups and made groups emerge from similar origins to inspire the mixing of three types of woods: “Jardim Botânico” (Botanic Garden) more

intense colors of wood from the Atlantic rainforest, Central Park with warm colors that are at the same time close and far from ivory. Ardennes Forest express the European taste for grayish woods. Ardennes is an immense forest reserve that spans from Belgium to Luxembourg from one side of Germany to the other. The lankier format of this line is innovative and expresses boldness and elegance. This line also brings back Chevron, which is a French method for diagonally applying parquets. 

Re-Use Created for Centura by Provenza

Work, create, reuse. This is the spirit underlying Provenza’s research study and the key for interpreting their project. They imagined salvaging whole reinforced concrete walls from irreverent and ultramodern urban industrial buildings and re-using the marble floors of an elegant and fascinating old villa, now abandoned. Concrete is a fusion; stark in terms of design and rigorous in those of colour. Marble stands for richness, with its diversified patterns and precious-looking surfaces. Provenza makes industrial concrete retaining all the traces present on the surface: the patches caused by moisture, the marks left by the wooden boards used as supports, the unexpected movements of the mortar and sand. In selecting their designer marble, polluted by minor infiltrations of oxides, taken from almost exhausted quarries, they have created the materials without interpreting them. The concrete has a plain and minimal appearance, soft to the touch where the irregularities of the graphic details follow and blend perfectly into the reliefs present in the blocks. Steam Rooms Require Special Considerations Constructing waterproof showers can be challenging, but when it comes to building proper steam showers and steam rooms, the challenges are amplified. Systems that work well for waterproofing may not be adequate for vapour management because vapour particles are much smaller than even the smallest water drops. Steam rooms must be both waterproof and vapour-tight. Lack of proper moisture management can lead to significant property damage and mould growth in and around these wet living spaces. Unfortunately, a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding of moisture management strategies has resulted in the use of products that will not perform as required in wet environments. For instance, there are builders who believe using a waterproof membrane 150 mm (6 in.) above the curb and installing tile with epoxy grout is sufficient to prevent water from penetrating into the walls. This installation method may work in the short term, but in a steam room it is a recipe for disaster. Controlling moisture One of the top challenges when designing and building a continuous use steam room is moisture management. This is a systematic method to contain water in both liquid and vapour form and enable it to pass through an assembly predictably and efficiently using materials not adversely affected by moisture. No material can completely eliminate water vapour transmission. In recognition of this fact, the terminology for a vapour ‘barrier’ was changed a few years ago to vapour ‘retarder’—the only true vapour barrier would be solid glass or

mortar meeting ANSI A 118.1. The floor was rebuilt with appropriate slope by using a traditional mortar-bed installation, which was waterproofed with the same membrane used to flash to the wall panels and cover all seams of the panels and protrusions. The membrane/vapour retarder was also applied directly onto the bonding flange of the drain ensuring that all moisture will be directed to the drain. In addition to the sheet membrane, a silane-modified polymer base sealant sealed pipe protrusions, sprinkler heads, and other openings where moisture might penetrate. This project was completed approximately four years ago and continues to perform well, with low maintenance requirements. Since then the manufacturer has developed a 20 mil (20 Thousand of an inch) thick waterproofing membrane which has a perm rating at an amazingly low 0.18. This sheet applied membrane is now recommended as a component in the method outlined above for steam room applications. This extremely low perm rating will make sure no vapour can get into the solid backing or wall cavities. Conclusion The goals of the Bankers Hall project were achieved, and in less time than this type of project would normally require. The facility is clean, attractive, and easy to maintain. The tiles provide a durable, hygienic, and decorative covering consistent with the upscale image of the location. However, it is the structure underneath that will make this steam room and others long-lasting and economical to maintain.  By: Dale Kempster, CSC, CTC, TTMAC

Heavy Commercial Installation Created for Centura by TEC

Products for Heavy Commercial Installations As environmental conditions change, so do substrates. Changes in temperature and moisture can cause substrates to expand, contract and even crack. When the right installation materials are chosen, and they work as one system from subfloor to sealant, tile installations withstand movement and become longer-lasting spaces. Carefully selecting the right installation materials becomes even more critical when an installation will be subjected to heavy wheel loads and foot traffic, as is often the case in hospitals and car dealerships. Crack Isolation Products Waterproofing and crack isolation membranes address existing problems in the substrate, and help prevent future issues from affecting the tile installation. Waterproofing and crack isolation membranes isolate existing substrate cracks to prevent in-plane cracks in the subfloor from telegraphing to tile. That way, movement beneath the installation surface will not affect the appearance of the tile or stone installation. Your crack isolation product must be suited to the demands of its installation environment. For example, TEC® HydraFlex™ Waterproofing Crack Isolation is rated for extra heavy commercial use and passed level 14 of the ASTM C627 Robinson Floor Test. This test measures the durability of the entire tile system. Level 14 of the Robinson Floor Test (the highest level achievable) requires a system to sustain a rotational rolling load with 300 pounds on each of three wheels for thirty minutes without cracking—totaling 450 rotations of 900 pounds on the steel wheels. Look for a product, like TEC® HydraFlex™, that meets or exceeds ASTM C627 performance requirements of your installation. Mortar & Grout Products TEC® Ultimate Large Tile Mortar also passed rigorous ASTM C627 Robinson floor testing, which enables it to be specified for heavy commercial environments. During testing, the tile assembly withstood 450 rotations of three steel wheels bearing a load of 250 pounds each, without any damage. TEC® Power Grout®, which is also rated for heavy commercial applications, finishes off floors with strong grout joints. It exceeds ANSI A118.7 specifications and provides excellent performance in virtually any environment, including high traffic and wet conditions, and in residential and commercial tile grout applications. With today’s demanding construction schedules, time is of the essence. Specify these products to help projects withstand heavy loads and foot traffic. 

Raimondi S.p.A Written by Carlo Olmni

Easy wash bucket This is the new and innovative eco-friendly wash bucket. The bucket is credited to the removable plastic bag, where it can be used with or without bag. It is now easy to remove grout residue as well as dirty water. This system of disposing unsanitary water is especially useful when acting on a job in upper level settings. Also even residential areas where it is more difficult to accomplish such a task. When the assignment is complete, dispose the bag or put a small hole on side of it to drain the water. Remember to then dispose the remaining bag itself. There are three rollers with edges used to avoid any water spills. Rollers are at a 15 degree incline, creating a natural arm movement. Also available with different kinds of replacement sponges are brown, yellow, yellow cut and one for epoxy. It’s the solution for those contractors that are drained of energy cleaning the wash bucket after grouting with epoxy. New Raimondi extending tiles/slabs lifters New Raimondi extending tiles/slabs lifters have been developed for elevating and transporting the new porcelain slabs of 20 mm thickness at 60x60cm (24”x24”) and 60x120cm (24”x46”) sizes. Tile factories are promoting these new ultra thick 20 mm slabs because of its quality, excelling in resistance and functionality. The weight of each 60x60cm slab is 16.5 kg (36 lb) and the weight of each 60x120cm slab is 33kg (72 lb). For those slabs specifically with smooth or textured surfaces, it’s strongly recommended to use the Raimondi extendable slab/tile lifters, considering the tile’s detailing. Raimondi has developed two new extending tile lifters, which are crucial for comfortably handling and positioning these new slabs. Extending slab lifters are 50-65 single handle with variable extension from 50 to 65 cm (19 5/8” to 25 1/2”).

Extending Slab lifters 50-120 Extending slab lifters consist of double handles with variable extension from 50 to 120 cm (19 5/8” to 47 1/4”). These extensions are used for handling and laying large format slabs (max length 120 cm - 47 1/4”). The extending slab lifter 50-120 with two handles allows two tile contractors to share the weight of porcelain and natural stone slabs. These products are extremely useful for handling natural stone slabs of 20mm thickness or thicker. In case of raised floor systems with minimum joint dimension of 3mm (1/8”), these tools are designed for pulling or positioning tiles without the full effort. New Raimondi spacers for the ultra-thick 20 mm porcelain slabs of 60x60cm (23”x23”) and 60x120cm (23”x46”) sizes A common installation method for the 20 mm thick porcelain slabs is the dry installation onto stable ground, sand and gravel. For the correct installation, it is recommended to install the slabs leaving 3mm to 5mm between each one using proper spacers between slabs fittingly. For this reason, Raimondi is introducing a cutting-edge special tile spacer designed with the dimension for creating a uniform joint dimension of 4mm. The new Raimondi spacer is also designed with special wings on the bottom due to the dry installation onto the sand. Another process, the vibration method, is recommended for levelilng the slabs so the spacer will remain in the proper position. This then allows the settling of the installed slabs firmly onto the sand.
