// Annemieke Koster “ENSCHEDE AND I, WE GO WELL TOGETHER. WHEN I CAME HERE FOR MY STUDIES I WAS SURE I WOULD LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY GRADUATION. IN THE MEANTIME, I HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 10 YEARS. THE CITY HAS BECOME BETTER AND BETTER. WHAT REMAINED ARE THE PLEASANT PACE AND THE LACK OF FUSS”.

TAKE YOUR TIME FOR ENSCHEDE

“I personally experienced what is significant for Enschede and Twente: you have to give things some time. Your patience will be rewarded, because the relationships that you have built up here are actually meaningful relationships. Everything is done in a cosy atmosphere, it is not at all rushed. Raised in Bennekom, I only knew Enschede of the fireworks disaster. Luckily you will always end up at the Oude Markt, even if you don’t know the route. What immediately struck me was the kindness of the people. I slowly fell in love with the city that I first looked upon as a stopover. After that I also fell in love with a Tukker. With Enschede Textielstad (Textile city) I want to add a new chapter to the history of textile in my own way. Thanks to my sustainable weaving mill the knowledge and craftsmanship will remain alive.

I notice that that is appreciated. At the same time I am on top of the future of the fashion industry, thanks to the Fashion and Technology course at Saxion college.

TIPS VAN ANNEMIEKE The textile route for bikers (textielfietsroute) between Enschede and the German city of Gronau. Thirty-five kilometres of surprises along the tracks of textile history: parks, old factory buildings, villas and churches. Proef Eet. This is not a contest in preparing the best snacks. Restaurants rightly show what’s on their menu. I love to eat at Sorrentino, an Italian restaurant. However, as an amateur cook I am sometimes allowed to help out in the kitchen. To me, one of the best places is the wall at the Tubantiasingel, which is a remnant of the Schuttersveld textile factory. Even if it wasn’t covered with climbing plants, this would be a monumental part of Enschede.

3

In this magazine you will soon find out what makes Enschede such an attractive city. That way you have all the more time to enjoy it!” // ANNEMIEKE KOSTER Entrepreneur Annemieke Koster (1989) came to Enschede in 2007 to study communication sciences at Twente University. After the disaster in a garment factory in Bangladesh in 2013, she explored the entire process of textile production. Under the motto: ‘a better world starts with you’ she started Enschede Textielstad (Textile city). A sustainable weaving mill where natural and recycled yarns are used to produce fabrics for the fashion industry and interior decoration. Since 2016 it has been situated in the same building as A.C. ter Kuile, the last weaving mill in Enschede. Do you want to buy something Annemieke weaved? At KLOF (Haverstraatpassage 17) you will find her denim cushions.

FLEXIBILITY AND LUST FOR LIFE TRUE BEAUTY IS ON THE INSIDE. WHILE DOING A CITY TOUR YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THAT IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR ENSCHEDE. AN ENORMOUS AND ENDLESS FLEXIBILITY HAS TRANSFORMED THE CITY INTO WHAT IT IS TODAY. TOUR GUIDE TON VÖLKER: “ENSCHEDE MIGHT NOT BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY, BUT IT IS CERTAINLY VERY FASCINATING”. The typical façade stands out proudly over the surrounding new buildings. With its arched windows, jagged roof edges and other decorations the building easily catches attention among the standard eighties’ architecture. Here, between the Parallelweg and the Van Lochemstraat, the industrial history takes all the credit. However, city guide Ton Völker does not hesitate to point out that nostalgia is inappropriate. “Don’t be

mistaken, this place used to be really messy and dirty”. Ton Völker agrees that it is a good thing that this part of industrial heritage, now transformed into dwellings, has been preserved. It helps us imagine a little what it must have been like in the old days, when the enormous Van Heek complex stretched from the centre of town, along the railway all the way to Gronau. Weaving mills, spinning mills, warehouses

6

and pipes as far as the eye could see. During its heyday the company had 6000 employees and Van Heek was the largest factory in The Netherlands. In 1966 the factory closed down and the municipality decided to buy the entire site. That was a bright action, because not only did it enable the building of new houses, it also enabled the building of the Music centre and the adjoining conservatory.

Carla Twente and Ton Völker from the Enschede City guides Foundation.

MAKING USE OF CRISES

That is how this part of the city centre is a good example of the flexibility that characterises Enschede, making use of crises: it is the central theme in the history of the inner city. The first inhabitants who arrived here around the year 700 already had to make the best of it. The poor soil did not generate much income. Fortunately the settlement was on the route between the Hanseatic cities of Münster and Deventer and that is how a modest trade started along with the travellers. Farmers sold flax fabrics and sheep wool to passers-by. Gradually some small home weaving industries developed which formed the base of the later textile industry.

Together with the Stadsgravenstraat it formed the inner canal. The outer canal flew along what is now known as Noorderhagen and Zuiderhagen.

GRANDEUR

A bit earlier, Völker had already explained how the De Graaff crossroads got its name: it was named after a grand hotel that used to be there. The hotel disappeared along with the textile industry. All that is left now is a square. Fortunately the beautiful department store across the street is still

The city map of Enschede clearly shows how the circular shape has expanded more and more. “Soon after the bishop of Utrecht had given Enschede its city rights in 1325, a canal system for the defence of the city appeared”, said tour guide Ton Völker. He points out where the water used to be, the Walstraat, now a street full of catering facilities and culture.

intact. When V&D opened the store in 1939, the newspapers called it ‘good tidings for Twente’. The building is waiting for good tidings once again. In the meantime we can enjoy the outside of this lovely store which was built in the style known as ‘Amsterdamse School’. The art deco details on the building are eye-catching. Across the street you will find Los Ponchos. On the side wall of Los Ponchos is a hook that refers to the city’s grandeur of the past. These hooks carried the overhead cables of the tram that used to pass here. That is how Völker’s visual storytelling is full of details that reveal the deeper layers of the Enschede of today; a lively city full of shops and catering facilities. “We take the people to the small streets they would pass otherwise”, says Völker.

STATELY BUILDINGS

Of course he stops at the epicentre of town: the fire monument in front of the Grote Kerk on the Oude Markt. He tells the story of the big city fire of 1862 which destroyed most of the city, but he also takes

you to the back of the church. The oldest version of the Grote Kerk was already built in the year 1000. Völker draws attention to the window from which the lepers were given the Holy Communion and to the stately buildings overlooking the church. Like the house with the high doorsteps, the director’s house and family house of the famous Van Heek family, well-known for its textile factories. You can now enter the house to have some Carribean food. The adjoining building, which used to be the office, is now a beer café and the residence of some student associations. Völker remembers that it was a massive shock when the factory was shut down. “I had a newspaper round. So many families were affected by it… and after that even more factories closed.”

CREATIVE MELTING POT

Local councillors tried to bring new employment to the city. They succeeded in bringing Polaroid to Enschede. This firm has already left the city. However, some former employees have continued the tradition on a small scale. They work from the old company building which is now a creative melting pot that carries the name Performance Factory. Like the Haverstraat, once a shopping street for wealthy women, now the place to be for trendy concept stores.

BEER IN CHURCH

Through the Menistenstraat, Völker walks straight to the church where the Mennonites (Baptists) used to gather. Again you see an example of how the textile history has defined the appearance of the city. “A lot of textile families were part of this community”. The beautiful church is waiting for its new destination as a city brewery with a restaurant and a stage. If things get out of hand, the poetic lines on the wall across the street might soothe the clouded mind: ‘This street knows what silence means / reflected in the sunrise / sounds the final footsteps / jackdaws pick up the pieces.’

PRIDE

The following day everything will look different, because that is what Enschede is like. Völker illustrates that with his story. He has lived in the city all his life so he knows what he is talking about when he says that Enschede is a city of survivors. “We have had four major disasters: the city fire, the bombings in the Second World War, the decline of the textile industry and the fireworks disaster, but thanks to the hardworking and no-nonsense mentality of the people of Enschede, the city has survived time and time again”. Pride has played an important role, he says: “the true inhabitants of Enschede are proud of their city. It might not be the most beautiful city, but it is certainly very fascinating. You feel the lust for life and the energy.”

// Around Enschede

SURPRISES ALONG THE CITY’S OUTSKIRTS On the boundary between Enschede’s urban area and its rural area you can find ‘het Rondje Enschede’ (lt. Around Enschede). A route of 52 kilometres in total with the possibility of dividing it into parts, either for cycling or hiking. The route weaves through a varying landscape with several attractive stops. From a tea garden to an art gallery and from a forest playground to a blueberry

farm. The route leads over existing and new paths and can be identified by the white and green arrows. The route of ‘Rondje Enschede’ has been inspired by the round shape that has formed the city’s historical outskirts for ages, with the first recognisable outskirt dating back to around 1800. The ring roads, still present to this day, were constructed around the year 1930 and formed a new

17

outskirt around the city. The current city’s edge has been a defining element for the new hiking and cycling route.

MAP AND ROUTES

The map and route-guide of ‘Rondje Enschede’ are available for free at the English portal: www.cityofenschede.com and at several participating businesses along the route(s).

AIME

Aime meets us halfway at the Van Heekplein. He is on his way to buy tools, because he needs to fix his shower. That doesn’t make him less cheerful. Aime tells us he likes to play the guitar and listen to live music. In his spare time he likes to play a game of pool at The Bridge.

ANNEMARIE EN HANNIE

This Tuesday morning, we find Annemarie and Hannie enjoying lunch on the sunny terrace of the Broodbode. Mother and daughter are on a cosy shopping trip in Enschede. Some favourite locations of these two ladies are Bluf and CafĂŠ Jansen and Janssen at the Oude Markt. After having finished their lunch they will do some more shopping.

THE PEOPLE OF ENSCHEDE ALBERT & HEDY

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon we run into Albert and Hedy on the terrace of Café Jansen & Janssen at the Oude Markt. They are on a lunch date which might even end up in a ‘drink date’. Their favourite spot is the Cultureel Vulpunt Tankstation in the Deurningerstraat. Here you can have a vegetarian day menu every Tuesday and Thursday. A creative place to eat, contemplate or enjoy art. Live music is presented regularly.

EDSAI

At the colourful terrace of Meisje in de Raadhuisstraat, Edsai is having a coffee and taking notes. He is originally from Rotterdam, but has fallen in love with the city of Enschede. He has just had a lovely fried fish on the market. His favourite pastime is cooking. If the weather is good, he likes to go cycling in the countryside around Enschede only to end up on a terrace.

THE SYNAGOGUE IN ENSCHEDE IS ONE OF THE THIRTEEN MOST EYECATCHING CHURCHES WHICH TOGETHER FORM THE LARGEST MUSEUM OF THE NETHERLANDS. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SYNAGOGUE OF THE NETHERLANDS AND ACCORDING TO MANY PEOPLE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SYNAGOGUE OF WESTERN EUROPE.

TREASURY OF THE JEWISH LIFE

You can smell the delicious pastry. “Apple pie and butter cake”, reveals a volunteer. Kosher, so prepared according to the Jewish food laws; that goes without saying. A group that has just finished a guided tour enjoys the pastry in the festivity hall. Besides the overwhelming architecture, this is what makes the synagogue in Enschede so special: it is much more than just a house of prayer. The complex consists of a large Sjoel (room for prayer), a smaller daytime sjoel, a bathhouse, church council room, festivity hall and a Jewish school. It is a monument of Jewish life. Everything is preserved really well. A mystery, considering the eventful past.

BEAUTY

Using an audio tour you can see the most important treasures in half an hour, but it is certainly wise to spend more time at the synagogue. The Large Sjoel, the room of prayer that is only used on heydays, silently draws a lot of attention. You are likely to miss the explanation on the Jewish numbers and its symbolism, because the oriental beauty of the room is so overwhelming. The voice of the audio tour confines to the most prominent rooms of this piece of art that was built to a design of the architect Karel de Bazel in 1928. However, you might want to wander a bit further, along the Jewish school and the festivity hall, ending at the kosher sjoel bar downstairs. Just like in the festivity hall, tasty apple pie is served in the sjoel bar.

Open from Tuesday until Thursday and on Sunday from 11:00 till 17:00. On Sunday and on Wednesday there are guided tours. Every last Sunday and second Wednesday of the month there is a walk in the district following the trails of Jewish history. There are also German-spoken guided tours. // Prinsestraat 16, synagogeenschede.nl

// Art and culture in Enschede

METROPOLITAN OFFER, FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE CALL IT ‘TWENTSE NUCHTERHEID’, BEING DOWN TO EARTH. FOR ART AND CULTURE GOES: DO NOT MAKE IT A WEIGHTY MATTER, JUST ENJOY IT. YOU WILL ALSO FIND THAT MATTER-OF-FACT APPROACH EVERYWHERE YOU’RE BEING WELCOMED IN ENSCHEDE. FROM A SMALL, INTIMATE THEATRE AND A WORLDLY JAZZ STAGE TO AN ENORMOUS CONCERT HALL AND MUSEUM OF INTERNATIONAL ALLURE: YOU IMMEDIATELY FEEL AT HOME. The ‘Muziekkwartier’ at the Wenninkgaarde is the showpiece of stage art in Enschede. Here you find the spacious Wilminktheater, the Muziekcentrum renowned for its acoustics, and the halls of poppodium Twente all under one roof. The Wilmink Theatre and the Music Centre are also the home base of the Orkest van het Oosten (Orchestra of the East) (Netherlands Symphony Orchestra) and the Nederlandse reisopera (Dutch travelling Opera) (Dutch

Touring Opera). Enschede is, along with Amsterdam and Maastricht, one of the three cities in The Netherlands that has a symphonic orchestra, an opera company and a conservatory. The things they offer are equivalent: this is the place where conductors from all over the world lead the orchestra to great musical heights and where the ‘Nederlandse reisopera’ presents its groundbreaking productions. On a smaller scale you will hear that richness in the concerts given by young talents.

What do you drink in a location where sustainability is very important? A locally brewed beer of course. It has to be a ‘Eanske Heilige Jacobus’ , named after the patron of the city. A safe choice, because it hardly contains any alcohol.

kitchens provide plenty of activity and warmth. Omma’s Kitchen adds some Korean spice to that. The chicken is just as spicy as it was promised on the menu, thanks to the fried layer of gochujang: fermented chili paste.

While Jacobus turns out to be a friendly drink with amber-coloured allure, we move far away for our starters. ‘Tinkus’, a Bolivian restaurant, is named after a traditional dance which originally represented the meeting between men and women. Gina Bruning-Imana came to The Netherlands to finish law school, but at a students’ party in Enschede she met her husband. “I have been here for 10 years now and cooking has been more than a hobby for a long time. Now we can really introduce the Bolivian cuisine to the people”.

SMALL STEP

REGULAR CUSTOMERS

As soon as Gina puts the ‘Bolivian Tasting’ on the table, it is not hard to imagine that they have more and more regular customers. A wooden serving tray with spicy minced meat, baked banana crisps and crispy cassava chips that can be dipped in a greenish hukataya mayonnaise; a dip with a coriander-like herb. The small Cholita, a bread roll with hot meat, is the centre of the dish. It is named after the women that sell this street food in Bolivia. The artisanal atmosphere of the ‘Twentsche Foodhal’ goes very well with the former industrial function of the building. There is no unnecessary fuss, but the open- plan

With lettuce, rice and some kimchi (fermented vegetables) you can create a really tasty wrap. It will be presented with chopsticks or the ordinary knife and fork. From Korea to the Achterhoek is only a small step at the ‘Twentsche Foodhal’. That is why we can end our meal with a fresh Dutch dairy dessert produced by ‘De Melkbus’ in Eibergen.

and son Herwin are still doubting, as is daughter-in-law Annemarie. The opening of the ‘Twentsche Foodhal’ “fits in really well with the development of Enschede”, says Herwin. The relaxed atmosphere appeals to this family. While baby Ties is not bothered by anything, his brother Teun (two) just comes running from the playground. Sister Saar (four) is still exploring everything. Grandpa Johnny: ”I think she is ordering some Korean food.”

A bit further down, the three generations of the Ter Riet family from Enschede are ready to start their culinary journey. “I think I will go for something Indonesian”, says mother Marion. Her husband Johnny

All kitchens of the ‘Twentsche Foodhal’ are opened from Thursday up until Sunday from 12:00 till 22:00. Every Friday there is live music from 17:00 and on Sunday there are special activities for children. From Monday till Friday the Foodhal is also opened for work and lunch from 8:30 till 18:00. The culinary offers change regularly: check the website twentschefoodhal.nl. The ‘Twentsche Foodhal’ is located in the Performance Factory, a former factory building. There used to be looms in the factory hall and later on the Polaroid cameras were produced there. Now there are lots of new activities concerning art, culture, recreation, sports and more. And the name Polaroid is on the facade of the building again. The former employees have restarted the production of Polaroid cameras and they decided to use the old company name.

A SKY FULL OF STORIES

36

AT THE FORMER AIRBASE OF TWENTHE HIKERS AND BIKERS SHARE A HUGE AMOUNT OF SPACE WITH SKYLARKS AND MEADOW PIPITS. OLD TRACKS AND NEW ART REVEAL THE RICH HISTORY OF THIS AREA.

They won’t fly away, even if it looks like they will. In a neat row, a KLM Boeing 747 and an Air France Airbus 340 are on the track. Like they can take off any minute. In reality they are at what you might call their final resting place. A company called Aircraft End-Or-Life-Solutions, which has based here recently, will dismantle them. A sign at the gate (‘landing area- access strictly prohibited’) shows that the discarded aircrafts did not just fall out of the sky. In fact, part of the area, known as Twenthe Airport, will be used for business flights and recreational flights.

IMMENSE AREA

So you have to avoid the landing strip, but you can walk everywhere on what was once prohibited territory. An immense area opens up. An area where you can discover nature, history and landscape art. Like the stones that lead you to the so-called ‘Belevingspad’ (experience path): they were part of the very first airport that was opened in 1931. Nowadays the 130 hectares of military exercise area have been added to the valuable nature that has developed around the field during the last few years. You can spot birds and (gliding) planes, go hiking or biking, enjoy landscape art, look for rare flora and fauna or experience the mysterious (military) history of the area. You can also absorb the endless space. Thanks to the maintenance plan, the field transforms into a world of flowers in spring and summer. The skylark will not let you into his territory. His habitat is defined by signs that urge you to stay on the tracks.

EXCITING LOOK

A nice place to observe the skylark is the watch tower that rises from the field almost like a ufo. Artist Paul de Kort converted an old fuel storage into a ‘Parallax’.

37

From the top of the open work fuel tanks you have a great view of the surrounding area. Two frog pools - constructed in the shape of bomb craters - light up like blue eyes in the landscape. In the young plantations further down, two American Staffords are roaming around; their boss ignores the fact that they should be on a leash. At the bottom of the hill a tunnel provides an exciting view on the landscape from a whole new level. Parallax is one of the places where (landscape) artists bring back to life the traces of military history. Guard houses, hangars and the bunkers (loved by bats) are silent witnesses. However, at the end of the path you can hear lots of noise. In building C-26 they used to test the engines of F-16 jet fighters, now the steel carcass is a piece of art called Doppler. The roaring of a Messerschmidt and the song of a meadow pipit alternate and a former inhabitant tells you how he and his family were banished from the area by the Germans. More stories can be found at the ‘Herinneringspad’ (remembrance path), on the strip where the on-board weapons were set.

NEW LAYER OF HISTORY

Not far away from sound object Doppler are the overgrown fundaments of the old Gefechtsstand, the German command centre during the war. Artist Filip Jonker and architect Michiel de Wit designed hiking tracks along these fundaments. That way visitors add a new layer to the history of this exceptional place in Twente. It is still changing: at the moment they are working on a new watch tower.

ROOMBEEK’S RENEWED ENERGY You can almost touch the vitality and inspiration. The district of Roombeek, close to the city centre, is an excellent example of zeal.
