DIRECTOR'S NOTES Why Wonderland? Twenty years ago, we wanted to create a one-of-a-kind take on the Alice in Wonderland series of stories. Our Fairy Godmother Program was entering its fifth year, and we thought Alice in Wonderland could be an inclusive story that would delight the "smalls and talls," as I call our audience. David Kisor, Joe McDonough, and I breathed new life into this classic tale by making a bold choice—to start the show with the phrase: "Every now and then Alice needs Wonderland." We decided to concentrate on a tween who is clashing with her Mom and awkwardly caught between worlds—a relevant story for children and parents alike. When Alice finds herself in need of a life lesson, the Wonderland characters are there to teach her, entertaining and delighting us in the process. Well, right now, I believe we need a Wonderland. Our tattered world needs a place to rest, to restore, to heal. Our country is pulled apart, and regardless of your beliefs, it’s time to stop for a couple hours and simply rejoice in the creative world that was inspired by a story spun a century ago, retold to fit our world today. Commissioning world-premiere musicals that are not holiday-themed, but nonetheless bring families and friends together during the holiday season, has always meant a great deal to ETC and to me personally. The creation of these non-denominational, multi-generational holiday shows has led to national and even international productions that delight diverse audiences. I hope the joy they inspire lives with the audience long after the lights go down. I believe these musicals fit in our mission of producing plays with a social conscience side by side with the upcoming Skeleton Crew and The Wolves, as well as past shows such as The Legend of Georgia McBride and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Ensemble is a unique, uncompromising place—alive and relevant. Although musicals such as Alice in Wonderland may seem to be confections on the surface, they are not without consequence. Thank you for coming into our candy cane colored world, enjoying a mad cup of tea, and meeting our Queen! We welcome you to flamingo croquet, complete with a teary-eyed mock turtle, captivating cat, and a caterpillar wisely ready for his wings. I love Alice in Wonderland. I love directing it. I love letting myself go into this wonderful Wonderland, and I thank you for sharing it with me. —D. Lynn Meyers

ETC ESSENTIALS

HEADING

ETC Essentials is a conversation series with local scholars and community members that explores the themes and context of our productions before the third Sunday matinee performance. This FREE program begins at 1:00 pm before the 2:00 pm matinee.

DARK COMEDY  |  FEBRUARY 10, 2019 With a wicked sense of humor, Ripcord is a deeply satisfying and vastly entertaining story of two utterly mismatched women thrown together by circumstance. Join Producing Artistic Director D. Lynn Meyers as she talks about dark comedy and how morbid humor is often an element of satire. MARRIAGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY  |  MARCH 24, 2019 Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House scandalized audiences with its 1879 debut when, in its final scene, protagonist Nora shockingly decides to leave her husband and children. Some claim it's an argument against marriage. If that is the case, then A Doll's House, Part 2 could be an argument for it. Join a panel of local marriage counselors for a discussion about marriage in 21st-century society. AUTO INDUSTRY 101  |  MAY 5, 2019 Dominique Morisseau's Skeleton Crew is her third play about Detroit, the epicenter of American motor manufacturing and her hometown. The tristate region, too, has felt the effect of production plants opening and closing. Join employees from local Ford, Honda, and Toyota plants as they share their perspectives on the state of the automotive industry. T-E-A-M: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS  |  JUNE 23, 2019 What does it take to create a team? What does it take to stay mentally and physically prepared for the game? The Wolves depicts a girls indoor soccer team, but how realistic is its portrayal? Educators from Xavier University’s Sports Management Program and University of Cincinnati’s Sports Psychology department will discuss what makes a team and what makes an athlete.

Wo  rdplay: Unpacking Lewis Carroll's Linguistic Suitcase Shakespeare and Chaucer are credited for coining some of today’s most popular words and phrases, (respectively: dwindle, gossip, moonbeam; and twitter, scissors, snort), however when it comes to linguistic concoctions, imaginative children’s writer and author of Alice in Wonderland, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—better known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll—has contributed some of the most colorful neologisms (newly coined words) to the English language. Carroll’s linguistic fame comes from coining the “portmanteau word.” Although Carroll did not orginate the word 'portmanteau' itself, he was the first to use it to describe a linguistic blend of two words that relate to a singular concept, much like a portmanteau suitcase that splits into two distinct compartments when opened. In Carroll's book Through the Looking-Glass (1871), Alice asks Humpty Dumpty what the words 'slithy' and 'mimsy' mean. His reply changed linguistic history: "Well, “slithy” means “lithe and slimy.” “Lithe” is the same as “active.” You see it’s like a portmanteau — there are two meanings packed up into one word." With the huge success of Carroll’s Alice books during the mid-19 th century, portmanteau words became very popular, and they are still as amusing and popular today. So the next time you’re chillaxing, eating a ginormous brunch with a frenemy on a glitzy glamping trip, you can thank Lewis Carroll for your knowledgebase of portmanteau words!

OTHER WORDS COINED BY LEWIS CARROLL: Chortle: to exclaim exultingly with a noisy chuckle or snort Galumph: to move heavily

Mimsy: miserable, flimsy, weak

Frumious: angry or fuming Slithy: slovenly, careless

Bandersnatch: A quick-moving creature that appears in Through the Looking-Glass Frabjous: great, wonderful, fabulous

Vorpal: voracious, sharp, or deadly

Jabberwocky: a fantastical and frightening creature in Through the Looking-Glass Snark: to snort or act snidely; an imaginary animal in Carroll’s poem "The Hunting of the Snark"

Boojum: a dangerous variety of snark

Fairy  Godmother Program 2 5th Anniversary

"HELLO, GINNY!" We begin each Fairy Godmother performance with this enthusiastic greeting to honor Ginny Hoffman, ETC's very own Fairy Godmother. The Fairy Godmother Program was founded in the memory and celebration of Ginny, an actress and theatre educator who shined on our stage from 1987 until her death in 1993. Ginny’s lasting legacy comes from her work with and dedication to children. Like the fairy godmothers she portrayed in many of our holiday productions, Ginny had a special place in her heart for sharing theatre with kids, which is why The Fairy Godmother Program not only gives the magic of theatre to children in our community, but also provides them with transportation to and from the show, snacks, lessons, and a meet and greet with the cast. Join the celebration of this program's 25th Anniversay by donating today. Gifts from YOU, our present-day fairy godparents, allow more than 1,200 economically disadvantaged children throughout our community to attend the holiday show each year, many of whom are experiencing live theatre for the first time. To contribute, please visit www.ensemblecincinnati.org, call (513) 421-3555, option 4, or see our box office. Thank you for honoring Ginny's life and work by supporting this cherished program.
